The first place and scorching hot San Diego Padres are in town to play us a 3 game series. They swept Seattle in 3 games at home over the weekend and have won 7 in a row. We won the season series last year, 13-5. They are 8th in the PCL in scoring with 3.50 runs per game (Portland is still #2 with 4.30). They are 2nd in fewest runs allowed with 2.60 per game (Portland is up to #4 with 2.90).

San Diego Padres (9-1 .900 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (7-3 .700 2 GB in 3rd place in the PCL West)

SD: Javier Reyna (32-R 2-0 1.59) vs. POR: Ron Wolf (28-R 1-1 4.40) All-Star

We were 2-2 against Reyna last season, but only once did he give us more than 2 runs and only gave us 7 total in 4 starts. He pitched a shutout against us. He is no relation to our own Jorge Reyna. Jorge is from Puerto Rico and Javier is from Venezuela.

Wolf has the flu....

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
SAN DIEGO
1: CF Hal Baumgardner (27-R .455-11-1-1-1.227)

8: SS Eddie Thomas (26-R .357-28-3-8-1.098) Gold Glove
9: P Ron Wolf (28-R .000-4-0-0-.000) All-Star

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 18,119

Top of the First:
Hal Baumgardner swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd. David Shropshire flies out to left. Roger Rojas walks on 4 pitches. He steals 2nd. C Dennis Webb has not thrown a base thief out at 2nd yet this season... Full count to Bob Welch and he swings and flies out to shallow left!

Bottom of the First:
Dale Ainsworth lines a double to left. Dennis Webb grounds out to short and Ainsworth goes to 3rd. Perry Templet lines out to 2rd and Mike Fahy steps on the bag to double off Ainsworth....

Top of the Third:
P Javier Reyna leads off with a single and Hal Baumgardner follows with another. With 1 out, P Ron Wolf balks and then Reyna scores on a ground out by Roger Rojas. 1 to 0, Padres. Then Baumgardner scores on a wild pitch... 2 to 0, Padres.

Bottom of the Third:
P Ron Wolf reaches on an error by 3B Mike Fahy, but gets doubled off 1st when Dale Ainsworth lines out to center... Dennis Webb gets beaned and writhes on the ground in pain.... Phil Parker makes his season debut as a pinch-runner and will stay in to catch. Perry Templet grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Bottom of the Fifth:
Jeff Schottler leads off with a single to center and Eddie Thomas reaches on an error by P Javier Reyna when he drops a throw at 1st. We pinch-hit for P Ron Wolf, since he has the flu and since we could use some runs... PH Gordon Saunderson (27-L) pops out to 3rd. Well, just because he has the flu, then... Dale Ainsworth grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. We send up Tom Borden (30-L) to hit for C Phil Parker. He grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Yep, no runs for us today...

Bottom of the Sixth:
Perry Templet leads off with a grounder to left for a hit. With 1 out, Jeff Austin takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Gary Long lines a single to left center and Templet scores! 2 to 1, Padres. We pull off a double steal! Jeff Schottler grounds out to 2nd and Austin scores to tie the game at 2. Eddie Thomas is up and I consider pinch-hitting for him, but decide to keep his defense in the game. He homers to left center!!!!! 4 to 2, Beavers!!!! 4 home runs on the season in 11 games!!! He hit 4 all of last season between Brooklyn and Portland!! C Tod Schreck strikes out.

Top of the Seventh:
On the Hill: Don Schmidt (27-R), beginning his second inning of work. After getting the third out, he goes to Pepe in the dugout and complains of pain in his leg....

Bottom of the Seventh:
With 1 out, PH Woody Griesbach (24-R), in only his second AB of the season, homers to left!!! 5 to 2, Beavers! That sends Javier Reyna to the clubhouse. New Pitcher: Danny Gilmore (29-R). He gets the next two out.

Won - 7 to 3

We had 10 hits and made no errors
San Diego had 7 hits and made 2 errors

Here I am jinxing us:
The Padres made 2 errors today; we have made 2 errors total on the season!

Ron Wolf went 5 innings, allowed 2 runs, 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. He threw a WP and balked.
RHP Don Schmidt (W 1-0) went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 walk and struck out 3.
LHP Lou Hertzberg (SV 1 ) went 2 innings, allowed 1 run, 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1.

Javier Reyna (L 2-1) went 6.1 innings, gave us 5 runs, 8 hits, 2 home runs, 2 walks, 1 HB and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run.

RF Dale Ainsworth hit a double and scored a run. PH Woody Griesbach (24-R) hit a home run. 1B Jeff Austin had a hit and a walk, stole a base and scored 2 runs. 2B Gary Long went 4 for 4 with a double, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. SS Eddie Thomas hit his 4th home run of the season and had 3 RBI. He now leads the team outright in HR and RBI!

Pepe's report (I am tired of getting constant reports from Pepe) on C Dennis Webb, who got beaned, is that he just has a bad bruise on his knee and it will be tender for a couple of weeks, but he can probably play on it. P Don Schmidt has maybe a mild muscle strain in his calf, maybe he is just a hypochondriac. Either way, it should be gone in a few days. So far, we have avoided any serious injuries this season, but we are getting plenty of little dings. Counting, P Ron Wolf's flu, we have 4 pitchers now that are less than 100%, but none serious enough to warrant a trip to the DL.

Full count to Jeff Austin and he takes ball 4 to load the bases for Jeff Schottler. He strikes out....

Won - 4 to 1

Hagans came within 1 out of a shutout...

We had 10 hits and made no errors
San Diego had 6 hits (2 in the 9th plus a walk) and made 2 errors

Brian Hagans (W 1-0) went 8.2 innings, allowed 1 run, 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7, a new team season high. At bat, he had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. I think we found a permanent member of our rotation!

San Diego Padres (9-3 .750 tied for 1st place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (9-3 .750 tied for 1st place in the PCL West)

SD: Mike Nackley (27-L 2-0 1.96) Cy Young vs. POR: Lonny Tomski (28-R Season debut)

Nackley won the Cy Young Award and the Pitching Triple Crown, going 20-14 with a 1.83 ERA and 234 SO. Amazingly, we were 3-1 against him last year, though his 1 win was a 3 hit shutout. We hit him fairly well the other three games, though. He is the first lefty we have faced since Opening Day.

Tomski is here to make one emergency start for us and then hop a train back to Vancouver (AAA). He has made 2 starts in AAA this season and he's 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA, but his WHIP is 1.19, which is okay, but not what you'd expect to accompany a 1.69 ERA. Nackley's is 0.78 this season in the Majors....

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
SAN DIEGO
1: CF Hal Baumgardner (27-R .444-18-1-1-1.111)

4: RF Bob Welch (36-R .333-27-1-3-.950)
5: 3B Mike Fahy (31-L .311-45-0-4-.696) All-Star
6: C Lee Dukes (33-R .242-33-1-5-.619)
7: 1B Ernesto Najarro (23-L .303-33-0-4-.706)

7: CF Perry Templet (23-L .333-45-0-9-.762) PCLCS MVP
8: C Tod Schreck (31-R .200-5-0-0-.533)
9: P Lonny Tomski (28-R Season debut)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 20,247

Top of the First:
Hal Baumgardner swings at the first pitch and grounds one to short, but Eddie Thomas boots it.... David Shropshire swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines a hit to center. Roger Rojas lines a hit to right and the base are loaded with no outs... Full count to Bob Welch and he swings at the payoff pitch and flies out to shallow right and the runners hold. Well, at least Lonny will not have an infinite ERA this season... Mike Fahy, the All-Star, flies out to deep center and Baumgardner trots home. 1 to 0, Padres. That's an unearned run and Lonny can now let them all come home and he'll still have an ERA of zero. Whoever invented the ERA was dumb and dumber were all those idiots who though it was a good thing... Lee Dukes swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to left and Shropshire heads home from 2nd, but Woody Griesbach guns him down!!

Bottom of the First:
Okay, let's take our medicine like big boys.... Dale Ainsworth lines a hit to center! No no-no! Eddie Thomas doubles down the right field line!!! Ainsworth heads for home....Thomas decides to take 3rd on the throw, but they cut it off and try to nail him, but he is safe and Ainsworth scores! Tie game! 1 to 1. No shutout! Another RBI for Eddie Thomas, who is now 2nd in the whole PCL! Jeff Schottler swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 3rd and Thomas scores! 2 to 1, Beavers! Randy James swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to right. Gary Long swings at the first pitch and grounds into a 1-6-3 double play.... What was I thinking putting him behind a slow runner like James? Stupid!

Top of the Second:
Ernesto Najarro leads off with a double to left. But the next three go down in order!

Bottom of the Fourth:
Gary Long leads off with a bloop single to left center and Woody Griesbach drives one to the wall in left center for a triple! 3 to 1, Beavers! After Perry Templet strikes out, Tod Schreck grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Griesbach scores! 4 to 1, Beavers!

Top of the Fifth:
Lonny Tomski gets the first two batters out to make it 11 in a row retired (no strikeouts), but then Hal Baumgardner singles to center and David Shropshire drives one over the head of Perry Templet in center for a triple and Baumgardner scores. 4 to 2, Beavers. The Bullpen is alerted. Roger Rojas lines a hit to right and Shropshire scores. 4 to 3, Beavers. Rojas steals 2nd. Bob Welch doubles to center to tie the game.... 4 to 4. Call to the Bullpen: Jamie Cleveland (31-L). A wild pitch sends Welch to 3rd. Mike Fahy swings at a 3-0 pitch and pops out to left!

Bottom of the Fifth:
With 2 outs, Jeff Schottler hits one 425 feet to right center for a home run!!! 5 to 4, Beavers! That sends Nackley packin'! New Pitcher: Gary Lyon (33-R). 1.65 ERA last year; 17.18 this year. 10 hits and 2 walks and 0 SO in 3.2 IP. Randy James grounds out to short.

Top of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Ernesto Najarro homers to right... Tie game: 5 to 5. Jamie Cleveland did not allow a home run to a lefty last season.... that is why we signed him.... I think I am just jinxed when it comes to lefties.... Next year, we'll get rid of them all...

Bottom of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Woody Griesbach hits one off the top of the wall in right center for a double. He has 5 AB this season and has hit for the cycle, though not in this game. They walk Perry Templet intentionally. PH Gordon Saunderson (27-L) clears the bases with a double down the right field line! 7 to 5, Beavers! PH Jeff Austin (30-R) swings at the first pitch and flies out to center. 2 outs. Dale Ainsworth grounds out to the pitcher.

Top of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Barry Chapman (27-R), who says he is 100% now. Phil Parker (27-S) is in to catch, Jeff Austin stays in to play 1st, Woody Griesbach moves to right and Jeff Schottler moves to left. With Chapman in the game now and at full strength, I am thinking the game is in the bag.... Roger Rojas and Bob Welch lead off with singles... With 1 out, Lee Dukes singles to load the bases up. We get the Bullpen working again... Ernesto Najarro flies out to shallow center and Rojas tags up and heads home.....the throw from Perry Templet is a touch late... 7 to 6, Beavers. Lute Campbell strikes out!

Bottom of the Seventh:
We have runners at 1st and 3rd with 1 out, after back-to-back singles from Jeff Schottler and Randy James. Gary Long grounds out to 3rd and Schottler holds his bag and James goes to 2nd. 2 outs. Woody Griesbach, needing a home run for the cycle today, swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd...

Top of the Eighth:
Chapman gets them out in order, though Perry Templet made a catch at the wall in center.

Bottom of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Buddy Werner (36-L). Signed as a free agent from San Francisco. 2.43 ERA last year; 1 scoreless, hitless inning this season. Perry Templet leads off with a triple to center! With the infield in, Phil Parker grounds out to 2nd. He almost got the ball through, but Roger Rojas made a great stop. Templet holds at 3rd. With the infield still in, Jeff Austin taps one easily to short for out #2 and Templet is still at 3rd.... That brings up P Barry Chapman.... PH Larry Sinchak (31-R) is sent up and walked intentionally to get to Eddie Thomas....oh, please, please. please! Make them pay, Eddie! He strikes out...

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Jorge Reyna (32-R). Sinchak stays in to play 3rd, which means if Reyna gives up a run, he will be the 2nd batter due up in the bottom of the 9th and he is the last fresh arm in the Pen... Roger Rojas strikes out! 1-2 pitch to Bob Welch and he doubles off the wall in left center... Mike Fahy singles to center and Welch heads home....the throw is about ten minutes late and Fahy moves up to 2nd... Tie game: 7 to 7. PH J.R. Cramer (29-L). Signed as a minor league free agent in February. Hit .237 with a .679 OPS for Cleveland last year. He strikes out. Ernesto Najarro, who already had a double and a home run in this game, is walked intentionally to get to Lute Campbell and his .116 BA. He grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the Ninth:

Werner still out there. Jeff Schottler pops out to 2nd. P Jorge Reyna grounds out to 3rd. Full count to Gary Long and he tales the payoff pitch for ball 4. That brings up Woody Griesbach for another chance at the cycle... He swings at a 1-0 pitch and lines it into center for a hit. P Buddy Werner is hurt. New Pitcher: Danny Gilmore (29-R). He was claimed off waivers by the Padres from Oakland, who had claimed him off waivers from San Diego... He is pitching for the 3rd straight day and is not fresh. Perry Templet flies out to right....

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:

They pinch-hit for the pitcher and go down in order!

Bottom of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Don Hook (30-R), their closer. Signed as a free agent by Oakland from Chicago in December, but then claimed off waivers 3 weeks later by the Padres. 25 SV and a 3.39 ERA for the Cubs last year. Has not allowed a run this season. He is fresh, having had 2 days off. With 2 outs, Larry Sinchak singles, but Eddie Thomas strikes out.

Top of the Eleventh:
3-4-5 hitters up for them and they go down 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Eleventh:
3-4-5 hitters up for us, but the pitcher is in the 4 hole... We let Reyna hit and we go down in order.

Top of the Twelfth:
John Pauley leads off with a 4 pitch walk. Ernesto Najarro grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-6! Lute Campbell and his .116 average double down the left field line and Najarro scores.... 8 to 7, Padres. That is all they get.

Bottom of the Twelfth:
New Pitcher: Steve Jardine (25-R), making his Major League debut! Woody Griesbach strikes out... Perry Templet draws a walk. Phil Parker strikes out. Jeff Austin takes an 0-2 pitch in the ribs. 0-2 pitch to Larry Sinchak and he swings and grounds a hit to center! Templet heads home from 2nd....the throw is late!!! Tie game!!! 8 to 8. Eddie Thomas is up.....what should I do? He has struck out 3 times today...but he has had magic in him to start this season...I call time out, to think.... I ask the ump how many timeouts I have left and Christy the PA says I am confused with basketball....I wanna smoke a cigarette and think about this one....What do you think, Christy?...."I think if you are going to smoke, I am going to leave."....I mean about letting Eddie hit or not?...."It's too late, he has already hit.".....and he had, grounding out to 2nd....

Top of the Thirteenth:

Reyna is starting his fifth inning.... 58 pitches....please have 1 more in you, Jorge!...2-3-4 hitters....Strikeout! For David Shropshire! Line out to right! For Roger Rojas! Strikeout!! For Bob Welch!!

Bottom of the Thirteenth:
We HAVE to score now... Jeff Schottler hits a 2-2 pitch high and deep down the right field line....if it is fair, it is a home run....it hits the foul pole!!!!! Home Run!!! And THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!

Won - 9 to 8 in 13 innings

Random Fact of Week: The Portland Beavers, who were the most HR challenged hitting team in Baseball last season, lead the Major Leagues with 16 in 16 games. Last year we only out-homered the Houston Astros, but the Astrodome is so tough to hit home runs in, that we were certainly the most powerless offense in Baseball in Year I, with only 95 HR.

We are in San Diego to play the Padres a 3 game series. We swept them in 3 games at our place last week. They split 4 games here with the Seals over the weekend. They are 7th in the PCL in scoring with 3.76 runs per game (Portland is down to #4 with 4.31). They are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 4.00 per game (Portland is #3 with 3.19). We have hit the most HR (16) and allowed the fewest (7).

Portland Beavers (11-5 .688 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (11-6 .647 0.5 GB tied for 2nd place in the PCL West)

POR: Don Panighetti (25-L 1-0 0.56) All-Star vs. SD: Mike Nackley (27-L 2-0 3.25) Cy Young

We hit Nackley pretty well last week and ended up winning the game in extra innings. We are 4-1 lifetime against him, though his one win was a 3 hit shutout. After the way we hit over the weekend in Los Angeles, he should be in line for another shutout.

Panighetti has only had 2 starts, but pitched our only shutout of the season last time out and currently leads the PCL in ERA.

Portland Beavers (12-5 .706 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (11-7 .611 1.5 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL West)

POR: Brian Hagans (26-R 1-0 0.87) Rookie vs. SD: Don Polcha (28-R 2-1 4.43)

We were 3-1 against Polcha last season, but the one good game he pitched was the last time he faced us.

Hagans is making his 2nd career start. His 1st, one week ago today, was a good one: 8.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 HR, 1 BB, 7 SO. He came within 1 out of pitching a shutout.

Bottom of the Fifth:

He only made 4 errors all of last season. Nelson then goes to 2nd on C Dave Benya's 2nd passed ball in the few games he has been with the Beavers.... With 1 out, Dean Hofer takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. E-1. With the infield in, P Brian Hagans swings at 3-0 pitch for some unknown reason and grounds into a force at home, 5-2. With the infield still in, Dale Ainsworth grounds a hit up the middle and 2 runs score! 6 to 2, Beavers! That sends Polcha packing.... New Pitcher: Danny Gilmore (29-R). Gary Long singles to left to load the bases back up with 1 out. Perry Templet beats out an infield hit and another run is in! 7 to 2, Beavers! Woody Griesbach flies out to center.

Bottom of the Eighth:
Through the first seven innings, Brian Hagans pitched well, but did not record a single strike out. This inning he strikes out the side in order!

Won - 8 to 2

We had 11 hits and made 1 error
San Diego had 3 hits and made 2 errors

Our two best pitchers so far this season have been our #4 and #5 guys...
They are now 1-2 in ERA in the PCL!

Alright, Tommy Lonski was not *great*… but he was better than the best pitcher in baseball, which makes him the best pitcher in baseball. It is all in the logic!

Friday, April 26, Year II

We are back home, just for the weekend, to play the Los Angeles Angels a 3 game series. We lost 2 of 3 in LA last weekend. The Angels just completed a 3 game sweep of the Oakland Oaks at home and have won 5 in a row, including 2 against us. They are 4th in the PCL in scoring with 4.47 runs per game (Portland is down to #5 with 4.42, 1 fewer that the Angels). The Angels have passed us for the HR lead, 21 to 19. They are 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.21 per game (Portland is up to #1 with 3.05, 3 fewer than the Angels, though LA leads in ERA, 2.57 to 2.73).

Los Angeles Angels (13-6 .684 1 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at

The Boston Braves signed free gent RP Joe Sheridan (29-R) to 1 year, $1.74 million contract today. He was the last Type A free agent left to sign. Last year, for Cleveland, he was 8-9 with a 2.70 ERA and 33 SV, second most in the National League. There are still a slew of Type B free agents who have not signed, including our own Glenn Pearce (40-R), unfortunately.

Los Angeles Angels (14-6 .700 tied for 1st place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (14-6 .700 tied for 1st place in the PCL West)

LA: Dave Ibarra (28-R 1-2 3.26) All-Star vs. POR: Don Panighetti (25-L 2-0 0.78) All-Star

Ibarra, who won 18 games a year ago, held us hitless for 2 innings last weekend before having to leave the game with an injury.

Panighetti, who leads the PCL in ERA now that Brian Hagans has fallen under the required IP, is pitching on his normal rest skipping ahead of Ron Wolf. The Angels lineup toady is 4 for 23 (.174) with 1 HR (David Aytes) lifetime against him.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
LOS ANGELES

4: RF Billy Shiyou (33-L .415-53-4-9-1.257)

8: LF John Olsavsky (29-L .286-7-0-1-.804)
9: P Dave Ibarra (28-R .000-5-0-0-.000) All-Star

4: 3B Randy James (33-R .188-69-1-3-.552)
5: 1B Jeff Austin (30-R .203-74-4-10-.678)

Another new record crowd for a non-opener! Larger than last year's Home Opener!

Top of the First:
Mike Stout grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Ron Nachman swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit past SS Eddie Thomas. David Aytes grounds a hit up the middle and Nachman beats the throw to 3rd. Billy Shiyou grounds into a 4-6-3 double play!!

Bottom of the First:
Dale Ainsworth takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. He does not steal....and Gary Long grounds into a 5-4-3 double play... Perry Templet swings at the first pitch, as he is wont to do, and lines to left.

Top of the Third:
John Olsavsky leads off with a double to left center and gets bunted to 3rd by P Dave Ibarra. Mike Stout strikes out! Ron Nachman homers to right... 2 to 0, Angels.

Bottom of the Fourth:
Perry Templet leads off with our first hit of the game, a home run to left! 2 to 1, Angels.

Bottom of the Fifth:
Dave Benya takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and then steals 2nd. With 1 out, P Don Panighetti grounds a hit to center and Benya beats the throw to the plate to tie the game at 2! That is all we get.

Top of the Ninth:
On the Hill: Barry Chapman (27-R), beginning his 2nd inning of work. His first was very shaky and the Bullpen is ready. After the first two batters strikeout, John Olsavsky doubles to left center. PH Ron Lawler (32-L) is announced. Call to the Bullpen: Jamie Cleveland (31-L). We walk Lawler intentionally....why , oh why? Mike Stout swings at the first pitch and lines one hard to left, by Jeff Schottler tracks it down!

Bottom of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Luis Padia (30-R). No runs and 1 hit allowed in 5 IP. Dave Benya draws a walk. He is on base for the 49th straight time! Let me look it up...it is actually 11 straight times!!! SS Dave Lesley (27-R) tries to bunt him over, but whiffs on 2 attempts....he ends up drawing a walk! PH Woody Griesbach (24-R) takes 4 more pitches out of the zone and the bases are loaded with no outs!!!! With the infield in, Dale Ainsworth swings at a 2-2 pitch and grounds a hit up the middle and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!

Won - 3 to 2

Los Angeles Angels (14-7 .667 1 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (15-6 .714 in 1st place in the PCL West)

LA: Lee Meadows (25-R Season debut) Rookie vs. POR: Don Panighetti (25-L 2-0 0.78) All-Star

Meadows was 2-0 in 5 starts last year with a 6.93 ERA. Both wins were against us.... He had a 2.70 ERA in his 2 starts against the Beavers and an 11.91 ERA in his other 3....

Hagans was leading the PCL in ERA until our number of games exceeded his innings pitched. He has only allowed 1 earned run in 17.2 IP. Once again, we are bumping Ron Wolf back.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
LOS ANGELES

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome

Attendance: 26,465

Top of the First:
Mike Stout grounds a 1-2 pitch up the middle for a hit and steals 2nd. There's an automatic run.... Ron Nachman grounds out to 1st, 3-1, and Stout goes to 3rd. Yep and then he will score on another ground out.... Nope. David Aytes grounds a 3-2 pitch into right to get the run in. 1 to 0, Angels. Joel Daniels swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to right. Ricky Pulido swings at a 3-2 pitch and pops out to 2nd. 24 pitch inning.

Bottom of the First:

Dale Ainsworth dumps a hit into left center. He does NOT steal.... Gary Long grounds one to 3rd, but they somehow only manage to get the force at 2nd, 5-4. Perry Templet strikes out... A wild pitch sends Long to 2nd. Randy James grounds out to 2nd. How are we winning games with a cleanup hitter with 3 RBI?

Top of the Second:
P Lee Meadows walks Jeff Austin, Jeff Schottler and Phil Parker to start the inning to load the bases up with no outs. Eddie Thomas lines a hit to center and 2 runs score! 2 to 1, Beavers! That is Eddie's first hit in 9 days... Parker and Thomas pull off a double steal with the pitcher at the plate... Would not it be easier to bunt, instead of steal and get a strikeout? Hagans does strikeout... Dale Ainsworth grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Parker scores. 3 to 1, Beavers. Gary Long lines out to left.

Top of the Third:
With 1 out, Mike Stout and Ron Nachman both single to put runners at 1st and 3rd. David Aytes strikes out! Joel Daniels homers to right.... 4 to 3, Angels. P Brian Hagans will have enough innings after this game, but will not lead the PCL in ERA...

Top of the Sixth:
Joel Daniels leads off with a double and the Bullpen is stirred up. With 1 out Ray Harrison singles and Daniels stops at 3rd. Call to the Bullpen: Lou Hertzberg (31-L). Larry Hardy flies out to right and Daniels is doubled off at 3rd by Dale Ainsworth!

Top of the Seventh:

Bob Duncan leads off by taking a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Ron Lawler singles and Duncan beats the throw to 3rd. The Bullpen is up again. Hertzberg balks... 5 to 3, Angels. Mike Stout strikes out. Ron Nachman grounds on to 2nd, but Gold Glover Gary Long boots it... Call to the Bullpen: Jorge Reyna (32-R). Dave Benya comes in to catch in a double switch. David Aytes grounds into a 1-6-3 double play!

Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Ron Huelsmann (23-R), a rookie. With 1 out, Dave Benya flies out to center to end his streak of reaching base 11 times in a row.

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Jamie Cleveland (31-L) to face 3 lefties: Joel Daniels, Ricky Pulido and Ray Harrison. None of them a good hitter... Daniels singles, Pulido flies out and Harrison homers to right... 7 to 3, Angels and we are done with Cleveland.... New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (27-R). He gets the next two out.

Bottom of the Eighth:
Perry Templet leads off with a home run to right. 7 to 4, Angels.

Lost - 7 to 4

We had 8 hits and made 1 error
Los Angeles had 12 hits and made 1 error

Brian Hagans (L 2-1) went 5.1 innings, allowed 4 runs, 8 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 7. At bat, he hit a double.

RHP Ron Wolf pitched 1 scoreless inning, allowed 1 hit and struck out 2.

Lee Meadows (W 1-0) went 6 innings, gave us 3 runs, 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. He threw a WP. We are now 5-1 against the best pitcher in the Baseball and 0-3 against the worst...
RHP Ernie Auel (SV 5) pitched a scoreless 9th and gave us 1 hit.

For the Times They are A'changin'.....and the players are, too....

Random Fact of Week: See if you can spot the Beavers that are Beavers no more! I bet you will be at least a little surprised..... The dealing has been done and I am already cursing myself for my impatience.... I HATE having to make up the stats with new players that have already played for other teams! We were 15-7 and tied for 1st before the trading and I GUARANTEE that we will play to a worse percentage after the trading, but hopefully, we will be in first place all alone at the end of the season.

Hint: There are 7, count 'em, 7 !! Beavers listed above who are Beavers no more... Also, there are 2 players listed in the National League leaders that are brand new Beavers! See if you can guess who!

Black Monday!

We have the day off, so all these players are traveling today.

Trade #15
SP Ron Wolf (28-R), CF Perry Templet (24-L) and minor league RP Dave Moses (23-L) to Philadelphia for 2B Paul Bouvet (26-R) and 2 minor leaguers: 1B Adrian Arellano (18-R) and RF Ron Scherer (23-L).

Wolf led our team in wins last year and made the All-Star team, but is not pitching very well this year and I am not a fan of pitchers that hardly ever strike anyone out. Christy the PA is sad to seem him go. "Now, I'll never get to write up an inning again!" Templet is awesome, but not my kind of player. I inherited him and did not pick him for the job. I love the way he swings the bat and the way he chases down fly balls, but he does not walk much and gets thrown out on the bases too much. He will be a star, but I will never love him. Moses has some skills, but he is expendable and the Phillies want him.

Bouvet (boo-VAY) is the reigning NL MVP and IS my kind of player. He won the NL Gold Glove at Second, Won the Batting Title, led the Majors in SB and runs scored and triples, walked 75 times and hit 13 HR. He's hitting .364 this year with a .942 OPS. He is also a leader in the clubhouse. The only negative to him is that the Phillies signed him to an 8 year contract this past winter that will pay him a boatload of money. $1.1 million this year, $2 million next year and then $2.88 million for 6 more years! If he continues to play like he has been, he will be a bargain, but I hate being tied into so long a contract. He was born in England. Arellano is a decent looking 1B prospect from Venezuela who will start playing Rookie ball this year. Scherer was a 4th round pick last summer and is hitting well in B Ball this year. He'll be sent to West Palm Beach (A).

Trade #16
SP Terry Melton (27-R), RF Dale Ainsworth (27-L) and 3 minor leaguers: 1B Ron Gucciardi (25-R), 3B Greg Brown (23-R) and RF Frank Ciccarelli (24-R) to New York for SP Angel Gaspar (23-R) and 3 minor leaguers: SP Mike Elliott (21-R), SP Jim Morrow (21-R) and RF Dick Louderback (24-R).

Okay, I admit that this is probably a bad trade. But I got to coveting Gaspar and could not see benching Ainsworth, though I wanted to. Ainsworth was our team MVP last year and I like him fine, but I inherited him and did not pick him to be on the team and he does not walk much. He had 60 walks last year, but 14 of them were intentional. Plus his OPS this year is .620 and he is making over $1 million. Melton is a great pitcher and made the All-Star team for us last year, but his back is problematic and sooner or later he is going to have a catastrophic injury. None of the minor leaguers we are sending away have any value to us. They apparently do for the Giants, though.

Gaspar is a rookie and is 4-1 with a 3.13 ERA for the Giants this year. He has amazing stuff, but his control is iffy and he has a tendency to give up home runs. He is also a selfish self-promoter a la Reggie Jackson... He was 9-12 with a 4.69 ERA in AAA last year. I do not expect him to be as good as he has been in his first five starts for the Giants, or as good as Melton, for that matter, or even worthy of trading Ainsworth for.... Elliott and Morrow are both good looking SP prospects. Elliott was picked in the 8th round last June from Mississippi State. He's a very hard worker. Morrow was a former 1st round pick (supplemental round, #38 overall) and was ranked #60 on Baseball America's Top 200 Prospect List this Spring after being #90 the year before. Louderback is not much, but not useless.

Trade #17
RP Jamie Cleveland (31-L), 2B Gary Long (33-R), 3B Randy James (33-R) and minor league 1B Mark Spiegel (25-R) to Pittsburgh for RP Mitch Dowdell (25-L), CF Barry Tucker (29-L) and minor league RP Dave Perez (24-L).

Cleveland was signed because he was tough against lefties last year and did not allow a home run to them, but he has not been tough on lefties for us and has allowed 2 home runs to them already in only 16 AB. Long is no longer required with Paul Bouvet on the roster and we need to get rid of his contract that will pay him $850,000 per season through Year IV. James, who led us in HR and RBI last season, has 3 RBI for us in 21 G and a .537 OPS as our cleanup hitter this year. he is being paid $950,000 per season through next year. Spiegel is nothing to us.

Dowdell is my latest attempt to acquire a lights out lefty. He has only pitched 1 inning this season in the Majors and allowed 1 hit. In AAA, he allowed 5 H and 2 BB in 13.1 IP. Last season as a rookie, in 34 IP for the Pirates, he allowed 19 hits, 4 walks and struck out 29 with 0 HR. Career ERA of 1.03 in the Majors. Tucker is just a decent fielding CF with no bat. He is a great presence in the clubhouse, though. After trading Perry Templet, we needed some more coverage for center. Perez would be a Cy Young candidate if he had any stamina. As he stands, though, he should be a fine reliever.

And finally, SP Bob Grigg (24-R), 3B Omar Flores (21-L) and LF Tony Casarez (20-L) have been called up from Vancouver and will be inserted into the starting rotation/lineup. Grigg was 3-0 with a 2.56 ERA with 10 BB and 33 SO in 31.2 IP for the Mounties. Flores was hitting .275 with a .402 OBP. He will platoon with Larry Sinchak. Casarez was hitting .342 with a .942 OPS. He will play everyday, though there is some question whether he can handle lefties. There are not many in our league at the moment, however, so it is not much of a concern.

After these trades, we now have the lowest payroll in Baseball ($6.7 million). Boston has the highest at $19.95 million.

Also, after these trades, we will have no starter rested enough to pitch tomorrow... So, we sent C Phil Parker to Vancouver (AAA) and called up SP Larry Smith (27-R) to make his Beaver debut. Unfortunately, Lonny Tomski pitched on Saturday and is unavailable for tomorrow.

Also, FYI, in all of these trade discussion, P Lonnie Tomski's name came up a few times, but none of the teams inquiring about his availability could assure me that they would give him a spot in their Major League rotation. If they had, I would have been tempted to let him go so he could make more money for himself.

Editor's Note:
Oh, drat....I just realized I broke one of my house rules by trading Cleveland.... I am not supposed to trade a free agent I sign until a World Series has been played after the signing.... Crud. Well, to be honest, I did not really trade him , I gave him away for free. The Pirates were willing to do the deal without him in it. So forgive me and I will endeavor to be more vigilant in the future..... We have plenty of budget room (almost $4 million) and the $300k I saved by giving him away instead of cutting him, is not very important.

Tuesday, April 30, Year II

We are in Oakland to play a 3 game series and debut the new look Beavers! I am pretty certain that the new Beavers are not as good as the old Beavers right now, but 1) I like them more and 2) I think they will be better in the long run. The Oaks just swept Seattle in a 4 game series here over the weekend. We swept them in a 3 games at Portland, April 12-14. They are 9th in scoring in the PCL with 3.63 runs per game (Portland is down to #6 with 4.14). They are 6th in fewest runs allowed with 3.79 per game (Portland is #2 with 3.14).

Portland Beavers (15-7 .682 tied for 1st place in the PCL West) at
Oakland Oaks (10-14 .417 6 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: Larry Smith (27-R Portland debut) vs. OAK: Ray Hradek (24-R 0-4 4.44)

We beat Hradek 2 weeks ago, but he went 7 innings and only gave us 3 runs (2 earned). He beat us last year, the only time we faced him going 8 innings and giving us 2 runs.

Smith is making his Beaver debut. For Vancouver (AAA), he was 2-0 with a 3.03 ERA. He is a groundball, pitch to contact type.

Weather: 65 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 10 MPH wind blowing right to left.
Attendance: 22,558

Top of the First:

Paul Bouvet, in his Beaver debut, hits one over the center fielder's head and ends up with a triple! Dave Benya flies out to right and Bouvet scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! Larry Sinchak grounds a 3-1 pitch up the middle for a hit. Woody Griesbach flies out to right. Jeff Schottler grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the First:

P Larry Smith makes his Beaver debut by walking the lead off batter, Glenn Rodgers, on 4 pitches... Henry Rangel grounds a hit to left. Norm Wynne grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and Rodgers goes to 3rd. Roger Crandall flies out to shallow center and Rodgers holds at 3rd. 2 outs. Neil Rivers grounds out to 2nd!

Top of the Second:
In his Major League debut, Tony Casarez lines a 1-1 pitch over the second baseman for a hit! Omar Flores, in his Major League debut, takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three... Casarez steals 2nd! Eddie Thomas strikes out. P Larry Smith grounds a hit to center, but Casarez stops at 3rd. Paul Bouvet lines a hit to left and Casarez scores! 2 to 0, Beavers, Bouvet is never going to make an out!! Dave Benya flies out to left.

Top of the Seventh:
With 2 outs, Dave Benya hits a home run to right! 3 to 0, Beavers! I think he has to be our starting catcher everyday, even when Dennis Webb comes back, at least until he cools off! The guy's batting .500 with power and walks and steals!

Bottom of the Seventh:
Lead off hitter Bob Waln is walked and the Bullpen is activated. PH Dave Russell (27-L) lines a hit to left. Glenn Rodgers swings at the first pitch and grounds into a 5-4-3 double play! Omar Flores in his first Major League game! Waln takes 3rd. Full count to Henry Rangel, who is NOT going to walk if he can help it, swings at the payoff pitch and grounds out to 2nd!

Won - 3 to 0

We had 9 hits and made 1 error
Oakland had 7 hits and made no errors

Larry Smith (W 1-0), in his Beaver debut, went 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had 2 hits! And now he is on a train back to Vancouver (AAA). Lonny Tomski has competition for that #6 spot in the rotation!

Ray Hradek (L 0-5) went 7 innings, gave us 3 runs, 8 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 3. He becomes the first opposition pitcher to pickup 2 losses from the Beavers.

2B Paul Bouvet, in his Beaver debut, had 2 hits with a triple, scored a run and had an RBI! C Dave Benya hit his 2nd home run of the season and had 2 RBI. All of our catchers combined hit 3 home runs all of last year (2 by Benya). LF Tony Casarez, in his Major League debut had a hit, stole a base and scored a run. 3B Omar Flores, in his Major League debut, went 0 for 3, but started a 5-4-3 double play.

The Oaks had 2 pitchers come up lame after the contest. Starter Ray Hradek has tendinitis in his forearm and will miss a week or two. RP Glenn Brown had to leave with a sore back, but should be fine in a few days.
