Question about historical ratings methodology
Maybe this interests only me. . .but
In the 1980 season, J. R. Richard was as dominating a pitcher (especially of righties) as there was, but only until July when he had a career-ending stroke. His first half performance wasn't an anomaly--he had set season strike-out records in 1978 and 1979 and was winning at least 18 games a year for the 1976-1979 period. Yes, his 1980 iOOTP ratings are mostly average, at least when viewed on the 2-8 scale I prefer. He's a 5 for stuff, a 4 for control (no real complaint about that one), and only a 6 for movement. Compare that to Carlton who had similar stats but is a 6 stuff, and 7 movement with an ERA and K/IP slightly worse than Richard. So the only explanation I can think of is that Richard's ratings are downgraded because he pitched only half the season? (APBA used to do this too, FWIW). Is that correct? Oddly enough, he's a "normal" for Injury History. . .shouldn't he be better rated for Stuff/Movement and a "fragile" for injury if you're trying to replicate the 1980 experience, maybe? Thanks for exposing (hopefully) a little of the rating method on this historical seasons. |

iOOTP will adjust batters/pitchers (i.e., nudge them toward the league average) if they fall below a specific threshold. The default for hitters is 350 AB. The default for pitchers is 40 IP (x4 for SPs). In OOTP, the user can change these settings. In iOOTP, the user cannot. J.R. Richard fell below 140 IPs, so he will be "downgraded" toward the league average.
re: injury ratings . . . I think playing time is a factor for position players. But I'm not sure about pitchers. |

Thanks for the detailed explanation! I did the final 47 historical seasons today and had no time to answer the question.
