Thanks, Merkle. I have removed the photo from page 35 of this thread, and inserted a reference to your post on this page for the correct identification of Frank Robinson in the Ogden uniform. Clearly, the fellow below in the team photo looks more like F. Robby than the smiling guy.

Dave Bristol
Another player on those 1953 Ogden Reds was future Cincinnati Reds manager Dave Bristol. This photo is from the Ogden Standard-Examiner of May 8, 1953.

Don Guy
I'm inclined to think that the player next to Chico Terry in the photo at the top of this page is Don Guy, a pitcher with the 1953 Ogden Reds. Guy was 6'4" in height, but it appears to me that he is crouching a bit, if you compare his belt line with the other two belt lines which are visible in the same row. His photo is shown below, from the Ogden Standard-Examiner of Jan. 2, 1955.

The Rev. Dr. Gil Stafford
This is a brief bio I wrote for another site in a series called Catching the Moment -- obscure catchers who, mostly, failed to reach the majors but were in MLB camps long enough for Topps or teams to capture their moment. I have done 36 of them so far, 31 of them exclusively minor leaguers.
In addition to the remarkable story of Owen Johnson, the story behind Catching the Moment No. 35, Gil Stafford, is easily the most extraordinary tale we've found. We should say, Rev. Dr. Gil Stafford. But he was "just" Gil Stafford when the Astros drafted him in the 17th round out of a Phoenix high school in 1971. Only a part-timer in the Houston system, the Brewers brought him into camp for 1973, and he reached the big league side in '74. But Stafford never rose above AA and never earned No. 1 status, so the Brewers released him after the 1975 season. He returned to the Phoenix area and began coaching high school baseball while attending school at Arizona State. By 1980, he had already earned a doctorate in Christian education, and he was hired to be only the second head baseball coach at NAIA power Grand Canyon University at the age of 27. He would coach the Antelopes from 1981-2000, winning NAIA national championships in 1981, 82 and 86. And in 1991, he on board when Grand Canyon became the first athletic program to jump all the way from NAIA to NCAA Division I. Among the several major league players he helped develop, the Angels' Tim Salmon paid for a new clubhouse for the team. Subsequent financial problems at the school meant GCU would step back to Division II status. His final three seasons as baseball coach, Stafford also served at the school's executive vice president. Then, in 1981 at the age of 46, he was named President of Grand Canyon University -- a role he filled until 2003. At that time, he resigned to enter the Episcopalian priesthood. Today, the Rev. Dr. Gil Stafford serves as Canon Theologian for the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona. But his ex-players still call him "skip." Gil Stafford today Last edited by Home Free; 12-04-2019 at 10:12 PM. |

Kent Burdick
This Topps Vault photo of Burdick was acquired in 2012 when it was posted somewhere on OOTP (sorry, but I didn't record who posted it). Burdick was on the Cincinnati Reds' spring roster in 1972.

Alan Beal
The photo is from the Tampa (FL) Tribune of April 14, 1974. The caption indicates that the photo is a shot of a group of Tampa Tarpons infielders, but the uniform certainly looks like that of the Cincinnati Reds.

Phil Bittle
The photo shows Phil Bittle playing first base for the Billings Mustangs. Baseball-reference.com indicates that Bittle played in only 4 games for that team. The photo is from the Great Falls (MT) Tribune of June 26, 1974.

Brad Bush
The quality of this photo is unfortunate, but it was the best I could find of Bush, despite his appearing in his hometown newspaper fairly frequently. The photo shows him in the uniform of Paris (TX) High School. It's from the Paris News of May 26, 1974.

Bill Baggett
Baggett is shown as Assistant Varsity Baseball Coach of Lamar High School in Texas. The caption indicates that he was "drafted out of school by the Cincinnati Reds and spent several years in the Reds organization," so I'm confident that this is the right guy. The caption also indicates that Baggett has over 30 years' coaching experience in various Texas school districts. The photo was on the lamarbaseball.net website.
