Los Angeles Angels (17-19 .472 4.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (22-15 .595 tied for 1st place in the PCL West)

LA: Tom Sayers (27-R 2-2 7.22) vs. POR: Frank Flores (24-R 5-2 2.02)

Sayers has had 6 starts and has allowed at least 4 runs every time. If we get shutout today, I am shooting somebody... I need to go buy a gun first, though, and then I'd probably calm down by the time I got back to the clubhouse.... We are 1-1 against Sayers last year. He had one good game and one stinker.

Flores lost his last start, another shutout for us, but he only allowed 2 runs (1 earned) and 4 hits in 6.2 IP. He gave up 4 runs in each of his first two starts, but has only allowed 5 total in his last 5 starts.

Today is C Rick Mansoor's 30th birthday!

The Oakland Oaks are here to play a 2 game set. They just won 2 of 3 in Seattle. We beat them 2 games here at the end of April. They are 13th in scoring in the PCL with 3.53 runs per game (Portland is 3rd with 4.89). They are batting a League low .223. We are batting .264 (6th). The Oaks are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.82 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.24). They have allowed the fewest home runs in the PCL with 17. We are 2nd best with 20. Their run differential is -11 and ours is +63, 2nd best to Dallas. The Oaks have 7 players in the DL, including 2 CF's and 2 SP's.

Oakland Oaks (19-19 .500 3 GB tied for 4th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (22-16 .579 tied for 1st place in the PCL West)

OAK: Hugo Lopez (27-R 3-4 5.18) vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (24-R 3-4 3.26)

Lopez pitched a 4 hit shutout at Minnesota in his last start. We beat him back in April scoring 6 runs in 4.2 IP.

Johnson is 0-2 in his last 3 starts. Last time out, he gave up only 2 hits in 5.1 IP, but lost anyway as we got shut out in Dallas. The Oaks' 3-4-5 hitters are 4 for 63 (.063) against Johnson and went hitless in the game earlier this year when Johnson faced them. This cannot continue, but I sure hope it does. On the other hand, the other 5 hitters in their lineup, who are certainly not known for doing much hitting, are a combined 21 for 48 (.438).

We are in Seattle to play the Rainiers a 4 game series through the weekend. They just lost 2 games here to Los Angeles, including a 16 to 1 pasting. This is out first meeting of the season. We were 7-7 against them last year and 5-9 in 2001. They are 6th in the PCL in scoring with 4.38 runs per game (Portland is up to #2 with 5.03). The Rainiers are 14th in fewest runs allowed with 4.95 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.23). Pitching in the Kingdome, their hurlers have allowed the most HR in the League with 41. After Rondey Moe's generosity, we are down to 3rd fewest with 23. Their run differential is -22 and ours is +72, back to the best in Baseball! They have 2B Adam Carter (26-R) on the DL. He was batting .345 before breaking a bone in his foot. RP Garry Ayers (30-R), who we traded to them, has had a rough time so far in Seattle. For us, he was pretty awesome last year, except for walking 5.9 per 9 IP. He was 4-1 with 4 SV and a 3.05 ERA. Opponents only hit .207 and he did not allow a home run all year in 59 IP and he struck out 68. For the Rainiers, he has pitched 11.2 innings, and allowed 13 runs. 14 H and 11 BB and 4 HR...

Portland Beavers (24-16 .600 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Seattle Rainiers (19-21 .475 5 GB tied for 6th place in the PCL West).

POR: Steve Muir (28-R 5-1 3.06) Gold Glove(01) vs. SEA: Vic Harrington (35-R 5-2 3.34)

Muir gave up 5 runs (4 earned) in 2.1 IP last time out, but escaped a loss because we scored 13 runs.

Harrington was signed as a free agent from Oakland just a few days before the season started. He has lost his last two starts, but both were Quality outings. The Rainiers only scored him 1 total run in the two games and he lost, 3 to 1, and 2 to 0. He only gave up 5 hits in each game. He was 0-2 against us last season with the Oaks and did not make it more than 3 innings in either game.

Our first game on AstroTurf.

Top of the First:

Jerry Suazo grounds out to 2nd. Brian Mitchell grounds out to 2nd. Kim Springer grounds out to 1st, unassisted...

Bottom of the First:
Dan McKee grounds a hit to right. Jeff Albright grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. He steals 2nd. Ronaldo Entrevinhas grounds out to 2nd and Albright goes to 3rd. 2 outs. Luis Hernandez, the ex-Beaver, swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 3rd!

Top of the Third:
After 7 straight ground outs to start the game, A.J. Lee finally varies the routine with a 1 out walk. He steals 2nd and C Terry Mohlman throws the ball away and Lee goes to 3rd. P Steve Muir lines a hit to left and Lee scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! Jerry Suazo lines a hit to center. But the next two make outs.

Bottom of the Third:
P Vic Harrington, who has 8 hits in his career (.055) and 95 SO in 145 AB, grounds a hit to left...Dan McKee grounds a hit to center. Jeff Albright grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-6, and Harrington goes to 3rd. Albright steals 2nd. Ronaldo Entrevinhas swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines out to shallow center and the runners hold. 2 outs. Luis Hernandez flies out to center!!

Top of the Fifth:
Dave Risinger and A.J. Lee lead off with back to back hits and we have runners at the corners with no outs. Lee steals 2nd! Which means P Steve Muir will swing away! He flies out to left and Risinger tags up and scores without a throw! 2 to 0, Beavers! Jerry Suazo and Brian Mitchell both strike out, the first two strikeouts of the game for P Vic Harrington...

Bottom of the Fifth:
P Vic Harrington leads off with a line drive to right center for his 2nd hit of the day.... now, that is just not fair... P Steve Muir ought to be embarrassed... He's the only pitcher in the world that cannot strike out P Harrington... He strikes out Dan McKee, though, on 3 pitches, looking! Jeff Albright grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. Ronaldo Entrevinhas flies out to left!!

Top of the Sixth:

Kim Springer beats out an infield hit, but has pulled something or twisted his ankle or something.... Trudy goes out... Pinch-runner: Carlos Lopez (28-L), who will stay in to play left. Glenn Snowden grounds into a 5-4-3 double play....

Top of the Seventh:
A.J. Lee lines a hit to right. P Steve Muir swings away and grounds a hit to left!! With 1 out, Brian Mitchell grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6, and Lee goes to 3rd. Carlos Lopez draws a walk to load the bases up with 2 outs for Glenn Snowden. He swings at the first pitch and sends it deep to center and it could be....no, off the wall.... A double, though, and 2 runs are in!! 4 to 0, Beavers! Surprisingly, they pitch to Fernando Mexicano. I guess Tim Higbee is sufficient protection! Mexicano lines a hit to right and Lopez scores! 5 to 0, Beavers! Their manager finally comes out to make a pitching change. New Pitcher: Danny Morales (39-L) with a 2.31 ERA in 11.2 IP, but a 1.71 WHIP. He was signed as a free agent from Atlanta in December. Tim Higbee lines out to 1st.

Bottom of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Danny Cantonwine (29-R), who has not allowed a run yet, but only has pitched 4.2 innings with 1 hit allowed, but 5 walks. He has been on the DL most of this season. He had a 3.95 ERA in 68.1 IP last year with 76 SO. Dave Risinger beats out an infield hit and goes to 2nd on a ground out by A.J. Lee, 2B Juan Garza making a great play. P Steve Muir lines a hit to left and Risinger scores! 6 to 0, Beavers! P Muir is 3 for 3 with 3 RBI! Jerry Suazo lines a hit to right. Brian Mitchell beats out an infield hit and the bases are loaded with 1 out. Carlos Lopez is up. I left Fernando Mexicano at 3rd all this time just so Lopez could get an AB. He fouls out to 3rd... 2 outs. Glenn Snowden strikes out looking....

Won - 6 to 0

We had 15 hits and made no errors
Seattle had 8 hits and made 1 error

Steve Muir (W 6-1) went 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. 129 pitches. At bat, he went 3 for 3 with 3 RBI. HIs 2nd shutout of the season. The team's 4th. Frank Flores has the other two.

Vic Harrington (L 5-3) went 6.2 innings, gave us 5 runs, 11 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. 123 pitches. At bat, the career .055 hitter went 2 for 2.

RF Jerry Suazo had 2 hits. PR/LF Carlos Lopez drew a walk and scored a run. 1B Glenn Snowden hit a double and had 2 RBI. 3B/LF Fernando Mexicano had 2 hits and a walk and an RBI. SS Dave Risinger had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. 2B A.J. Lee had 2 hits and a walk, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs.

For Seattle, besides P Vic Harrington, the .055 hitter, getting 2 hits, LF Oscar Rosa, who was batting .095 coming into the game, also had 2 hits.

Seattle announced that C Terry Mohlman, who was hurt during the game, had a sprained wrist that would bother him for a couple of weeks. He would go on the DL.

Trudy's report on Kim Springer is a pulled hamstring.... 7 weeks, she estimates for him to heal.... He will have to go on the DL... Just when he was coming to life....

Around the League: The Hollywood Stars are on fire. They just beat San Diego, 2 to 0, on the road and are 18-1 in their last 19 games. They were 5-16 in April and in last place. 18-2 in May and are now only 2 games behind us in 2nd place. Luckily, we do not have to play them again for two more weeks. Hopefully, they will have cooled off by then.

Rogers is their #1 starter. He was 0-1 in 2 starts against us last year. We pummeled him in the loss, but he came back in the no decision and held us to 2 runs in 8.1 IP and we lost in extra innings.

Portland Beavers (27-16 .628 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Seattle Rainiers (19-24 .442 8 GB in 7th place in the PCL West).

POR: Bill Woodward (22-R 2-4 4.05) Rookie vs. SEA: Bill Foley (28-R 5-3 3.50) Silver Slugger(01)

We are skipping homer happy Rondey Moe's spot in the rotation as pitching him in the Kingdome in his current generous mood seems a bit unwise. Woodward is a ground ball pitcher, but not immune to the home run himself. He has lost his last 3 starts, but the last two were very good outings where our offense could not score a single run in either game. He only gave up 1 total earned run in 14 IP.

Foley would be an elite pitcher if he was not so prone to the long ball. 8 in 69.1 IP this year. 22 and 25 in the previous seasons, but those were not in the Kingdome. He has allowed 4 in 3 starts here. Foley was 1-1 in 3 starts against us last season, but 2 starts were of very high quality and the loss still qualified as a Quality Start.

We are back home to play the Kansas City Royals a 4 game series through the weekend. They just split a pair of games in Minneapolis. This is our first meeting with them this season. Last year we were 4-4 against them and we were 3-5 in 2001. They are 9th in scoring in the PCL with 3.95 runs per game (Portland is still #2 with 5.02). The Royals are 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.55 per game (Portland is tied for 1st with Dallas with 3.22). Their pitchers lead the League in CG (14) and fewest walks (101) with 2.30 per game. We are tied for 4th in CG (7) and 4th in fewest walks (138) with 3.00 per game. Their run differential is +18 and ours is +82, still the best in Baseball, 3 runs ahead of Dallas. They will play this series without RF Sergio de Santiago (28-L), who is on the DL with a muscle pull for another week or so.

Fernando Mexicano was placed on the Disabled List. Since we do not have any infielders at Vancouver (A) worth calling up, we made a trade.

Trade #40
Minor League CF Rick Chrislip (20-R) to Dallas for SS Reid Reddick (25-R).

SD Oscar Cervantes has Chrislip as a 2 star prospect and OSA has him at 2.5 stars. He is hitting .280 at Evansville (C) with no power and no walks and no steals. He does not have the arm to play right.

Reddick is bona fide Gold Glove candidate who is very smart. He has some power (17 HR in A Ball in 2001), but strikes out a lot and is not a good runner.

Kansas City Royals (26-20 .565 7 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (28-20 .583 in 1st place in the PCL West)

KC: Graham Pethel (26-R 4-5 3.55) vs. POR: Rondey Moe (27-R 5-3 3.60)

Pethel started out the season 3-1, but is 1-4 in 7 stars since with the win being a 10 hit shutout, the only good game in the bunch. He did not have a decision in 2 starts against us last year, but pitched one good game and one great one. He led the PCL in strikeouts last season with 234. He is pitching on short rest today.

Moe is 0-2 in his last 3 starts: 17 IP, 20 H, 13 R, 4 HR, 10 BB and 15 SO. 6.88 ERA.

We are in San Antonio to play the Missions a 4 game series. They just swept the Solons 4 straight games in Sacramento and have won 7 in a row. This is our first meeting of the season. We were 5-3 against them last year and 7-1 in 2001. They are 13th in scoring in the PCL with 3.73 runs per game (Portland is #2 with 4.92, 1 run ahead of Dallas). Our average is surely going to drop without Francisco Mexicano... They are last in HR with 22 (We are 8th with 35). The Missions are 14th in fewest runs allowed with 4.71 per game (Portland is back to #1 with 3.18, 2 runs better than Dallas). Their run differential is -47 and ours is +87, still the best in Baseball, 3 better than Dallas.

Portland Beavers (30-20 .600 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
San Antonio Missions (22-26 .458 13 GB in 7th place in the PCL East)

POR: Bill Woodward (22-R 2-5 4.37) Rookie vs. SA: Mitch Bagley (21-R 5-3 2.45) Rookie

Woodward has lost his last 4 starts. 2 of the games were nice outings, though, and we have not given up on him yet.

Bagley was the 2nd overall pick in this year's B Leagues Draft. An oddity of his starts is that he has had 2 no decisions and did not allow a run in 14.2 IP in those games and only allowed 4 hits, 5 walks and struck out 13. Sure wish he was a Beaver, but they won't trade him for anyone we got... He is pitching on short rest today.

Trudy's report on Brian Mitchell is a swollen Howitzer... His elbow is as big as a cantaloupe... 2 to 3 months is her estimate.... That is 3 starting players on the DL now, plus a reliever.... Our offense has just become Glenn Snowden and a bunch of Hope....
