Hardware Heroes--Tiger versions

I've got two Tiger Hardware Heroes on my team that don't make sense to me.

First is 1940 Rudy York. He has zeroes for catcher ability. Yet he came up as a catcher and in 1939 caught 67 games. Zero catching ability makes no sense at all.

Second is 1987 Doyle Alexander being listed as an Atlanta Brave. He was having a stumble-bum year in Atlanta but got traded to Detroit and finished up 9-0 with a 1.53 ERA and was a huge factor in the Tigers winning the AL East.

Why isn't he listed as a Tiger?

Yes, the Braves got John Smoltz in return, but that is very mean-spirited to make him a Braves hero!

Because he started the majority of his games with them that year perhaps?

my guess on York is that he didn't play catcher at all in 1940 (BBref shows him playing all of his 155 games at 1B); and they are basing his ratings on that season

Yes, however my point is that his time with Detroit is only reason to remember him.

The point is didn't forget how to catch in twelve months. Kyle Schwarber caught fewer games with a two-year gap and he has catching ratings. Why?

Was a nice run to end the season.

Seasonal cards (with a year number) are based on that year and that year only. If he didn't play catcher that year, he won't have ratings there. For more current day players, we already have all of that data available (like your Schwarber example, plus, he caught 1 game this season).

I haven't used the York card, but have you tried training him at Catcher?

Just you wait...I'm trying to train Aparicio to play catcher! He has no rating there either...

The 1937 Rudy York Rookie card only has a 31 rating at C, and the 1940 Hardware card has no ability to train there. It makes sense, because in his history it says that the Tigers moved him elsewhere because he sucked at catcher. I think it's fine.

By the way, what does Hardware Heroes mean anyways? I thought it would be about players that won awards. But the 1992 Eck card is an All-Star card, even though he (surprisingly) won the Cy Young and MVP that year. If that's not a Hardware Heroes card, what is? What is Hardware Heroes, anyway?

Hardware Heroes cards are for guys that won awards, yes. 92 Eck could certainly have been a Hardware Hero, but his card was an All-Star mostly just because the same card was in PT19 and we didn't have the Hardware Heroes category then. A lot of guys cards could easily fit in multiple categories, so we just pick one.

Or both, in Carl Crawford's case.

What awards did Rudy York win in 1940 (or ever), and Doyle Alexander in 1987(or ever)?

Asking for a friend.

I still think Alexander as a Brave is dead wrong.

Alexander won a pitcher of the month in 87, so maybe that counts?

York won the award for "Kris really wanted this player-season in the game but couldn't find another category for him". Really special award - very rarely given out.

Can that be a category next year?

But it's true, sometimes HH can be a catch-all category for a card that we really want in the game but it might not fit into any category (there aren't a lot of these, only a handful). This is something we are looking to address for PT21

Was wondering why '74 Fergie Jenkins was a Hardware Heroes as he didn't win the Cy. Figured a better category was Record Breaker as he broke (and still holds) the Texas franchise record for wins.

IMO the catch-all category right now could be Unsung Heroes. Could be a new category next year for this purpose like "Wildcard" or something.

No, but he did win the AL Comeback Player of the Year, an award given out by the Sporting News at the time (they still give out an award for this, but so does MLB which started awarding their own in 2005). I figured that was the hardware being honored there...

Ahh, thanks for that. Still think the Record Breaker is a more natural fit though.
