I’ve completed 6 missions that have had a diamond pack as a reward without spending a dime. It can be done, just requires a ton of patience.

If anyone's curious, here's how much I spent on various missions that I've completed:
Gashouse Gang: 12071 (pulled both Frisch's, bought the rest)
Reds Lean: 20269 (pulled Nuxhall, bought the rest)
Reds Big red machine: 19325 (pulled Gullett, bought the rest)
Reds life after the machine: 10350 (pulled Franco, bought the rest)
We are the Reds: 17671: (pulled Reese and Williamson, bought the rest)

Pulling Omar Morenos is an easy way to make money. He's in at least two high(ish)-value collections, including the darndest "The Fastest!" and the one I put up two days ago already had an absurdely high 7-day average, so I just left out the buy-it-now. The price is up to 2.8k and there's nine hours to go.

Yeah I finished the 'Fastest' a while ago, but had to spend 12k to get Cool Papa Bell to do it...used him up through Diamond, so I got some value out of it at least.
Diamond I pulled was Bob Gibson 95, so all in all a win!

So over the last week I finished every Braves mission and received my Perfect 100 John Smoltz...woohoo. Did it all without paying a dime too, despite the jacked up prices.
Did resell several of the SE cards I got along the way (e.g. Darrell Evans).

So far Smoltzy is 5 and 1 this week with a sub 3 era in Diamond.

I'm now turning my attention to grabbing the Browns mission for the TeaTotallers as that team could really used a better 1b. Sam Rice and Smokey Burgess can't crack above 7 at 1b, and that lack of def is killing my pitching some weeks. I've got 2 cards left to grab, which currently look like they'll cost me 20k in pp...which is absurd.

Finally finished a mission I was waiting for since the first week they came out. And it's the 1st one on the list! 1980 Phillies World Series. I had everyone but the Steve Carlton since the beginning.

Given that the reward is a nice reliever in Tug McGraw, I considered the mission price as sort of a 2-for-1 with Carlton and McGraw. And thankfully for me, so much time has gone by and so few Carlton's ever came on the market, that the economy sort of "forgot" about this mission, and Carlton went to being listed at his all-time average.

So I got Carlton as a 5th rotation guy, and McGraw as a LHP Diamond reliever for only 35k PP total. McGraw is stinking it up so far, but hopefully that's a short term thing.

So you're the one who bought that Carlton. I wanted it, but I was about 5K short and didn't have anyone to sell who could have brought that much in...

Just finished a mission I had my eye on for quite some time: Chicago White Sox: From Anson to Appling (although I have no idea what "Anson" is all about in a White Sox collection)...

I had purchased a dirty Appling and returned it to the AH at a loss of about 17K PP. However, I was able to regain a "mint" version of SE Appling via this mission. So, I am well pleased. Appling is my 52nd SE card obtained. Also got a LIVE Kris Bryant in the accompanying diamond pack, so meh.

Expenditures...

97 Joe Jackson - 45K
91 Ted Lyons - pack'd
88 Red Faber - 10K
76 Charlie Robertson - 1695
71 Al Simmons - 3200
68 Chico Carrasquel - 84
61 Pat Seerey - 125
60 Jimmy Dykes - 100

Total = 60,204

If I do some accounting tricks and roll the 17K loss into this amount, it's about 77K for a mint copy of 99 SE Luke Appling. That seems pretty reasonable (last 7-day is 88K). It sure helped getting one of the diamonds needed in a pack. I also plan on using the 97 Shoeless Joe (it came "mint" as a nice bonus) as DH vs righties so it's a bit of a combo/bonus bonanza if you will.

I think I'm now 8 cards shy of Ed Walsh.

Yeah, no worries there. We're very PP strapped right now after completing the Appling mission. Unless my Willie Keeler finally and shockingly sells, in which case I can make no promises.

I was looking at that 97 Jackson all day as the last card needed for Walsh but decided the 90 appling or 91 lyons would be cheaper if they ever show up. Hate locking a card for 45K that I wouldn't use even if in the short term the appling PP + walsh is so appealing.

Time will tell if that was the right call.

Also need either 91 aaron or 96 baker to get smoltz. Plus some random 82 that just hasnt been there in a week lol. A Baker went for over 80K yesterday which is absurd. Definitely will keep waiting.

Yeah, same (although I'm a few cards further out on the mission than the rest of y'all). I do like Shoeless Joe, but he doesn't really fit my team at the moment so was just a bit too much to lock in. Still need a couple of those diamond cards for that Appling card, plus a couple each for the others. Definitely an expensive mission set, but some pretty sweet rewards once I can get through it all.

If anyone has a spare 82 rico carty they would be willing to put on the auction house this evening it would be appreciated.

Right now the extra two page scrolls are just compounding my disappointment every refresh that the diamonds I need aren't there.

Didn't expect to ever get involved in these missions but I had a lot of free time over the long weekend and they are obsessive.

Just won an auction for Carlton. 36,666 PP. That's that collection done.

Nice. Looks like the market still hasn't remembered that Carlton is part of the 1980 Phillies mission. Or maybe it just doesn't value a locked mid-Diamond SP as much nowadays.

Whatever the case, it's got me intrigued on looking at other forgotten missions. As many have suspected, it looks like it pays to wait when collecting.

I'm certainly not paying ~20k PP for CJ Wilson, or 50k for Cordero. Last two I need for the Rangers mission (or A-Rod if he's cheaper I guess).

Spent 7 hours after work yesterday refreshing roughly every 5 minutes while at home and not a single card I needed showed up. Theres got to be a way to improve this process next year to make it less tedious and soul crushing.

That'll drive you crazy. Try once or twice a day and you'll feel better

First month, so SSS, but Carlton is 4-1 in six starts with a 140 ERA+, 48 strikeouts and 10.5 K/9, and McGraw has 6 saves in 8 appearances, with nary a run allowed and 11 Ks in 9.0 IP.

So yeah, I'm happy so far.

Damn, you must have got the good McGraw. Mine is awful with an ~8.00 ERA. I think my Carlton has been a replacement-level Perfect player, but I didn't expect too much from him. Is this on your Perfect team or one of the Silver ones?

Great success sniping a 91 Aaron for just 17K.

Now if only 82 Carty would show up lol. How is that card so rare
