Goalie start settings

I have Braden Holtby as my starting goalie (4.5 star) and Philipp Grubauer as my backup (2.5 stars) in my redwings sim (year 2023). Ever since I acquired Holtby through free agency my goalie settings have been as follows:

4 for alternate goalies in back to back games
1 for backup start frequency
4 stick with the starter during the playoffs

I also have both check boxes checked so the settings are used and the AI doesn’t change the settings.

The problem I’m having is grubauer is constantly plugged into the starting position when I go to the game screen even through the game is not back to back. This has happened even during the playoffs! I have been manually changing it but I don’t always, and after each season Holtby plays in 55 or so games and the rest of the top goalies are around 65-70. Do I need to change backup start frequency to 0? Will he still backup if Holtby is tired ?

Now I see that I can’t change backup start frequency to 0, it has a minimum of 1.

Yeah, the minimum value of that frequency is dependent on the year, 0 is only an option in the years where a single goalie was the norm.

What are the other settings at? Those will have a significant effect on the starter choice as well.

I usually notice that it rotates my goalies if one starts to get tired, but if you don't think the best goalie is starting, using AI lines on the pre-game screen tends to put the best goalie back in net. But I don't play as a head coach so I normally don't have control over it either like that.

"Start the Best Goalie" at 0 is going to have a very big effect, change that to something closer to 4 if you want the best guy playing more.
