Bobby Bonds hit a 2-run triple off Ken Forsch in the bottom of the third, which put the Giants in front, 2-1. Kingman followed that up by driving Bonds and himself home with a 2-run shot off RHP Ken Forsch.

Bonds had 1 single, in addition to the triple. For the game, he went 2 for 5. In postgame comments to the San Francisco Chronicle, Bonds said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."

The Giants young first basemen Dave Kingman is in the midst of another extended power outage. Unlike the one earlier this season, at least he is still driving in runs, with 6 RBI in that span.

08/25/1972 - Giants Get Road Win, 8-4; Kingman Off the Schneid?

Dave Kingman was instrumental in his team's 8-4 triumph over the Chicago Cubs. The first baseman was 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3 for the San Francisco Giants. Jerry Johnson converted his 16th save in 19 tries. At 58-71, San Francisco is in 5th place in the NL West Division.

Kingman had a game-changing home run in the top of the seventh. On a 2-2 curveball from RHP Rick Reuschel, he banged a 2-run home run to left-center, giving the Giants a 5-4 lead. It was the 28th home run of the year for Kingman.

"Finally," Kingman said after the game.

08/27/1972 - Kingman Hits 2 Home Runs in Giants Win

A 6-RBI performance from Dave Kingman, who is tied for 10th in the NL in extra base hits with 46, helped the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs, 9-5. San Francisco is 5th in the NL West Division with a record of 59-72. Seems he has definitely broken out of his mid-August slump.

Kingman took the first pitch he saw in the game from RHP Bill Hands deep over the left field fence. He victimized the Cubs veteran again by depositing a full count pitch the other way over the right field fence in the 7th.

The Giants also got a big at-bat from pinch hitter Ed Goodson. For the game, Goodson was 1 for 1 with a home run. In the top of the seventh, with the bases empty, he stroked a solo home run. His 3rd home run of the season gave San Francisco a 5-4 lead.

"Feels good to get the job done," Goodson said after the game.

09/01/1972 - Giants Need Extra Frames to Get Past Pirates; Kingman Hits 2 More

The San Francisco Giants topped the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 5-3, with the largest share of the credit going to first baseman Dave Kingman. Kingman belted 2 home runs. He scored 3 runs and drove in 3 for the Giants. With the win, San Francisco has a record of 61-74. Pittsburgh falls to 83-48.

Kingman hit both shots off RHP Dock Ellis, with the second ball being absolutely punished, way into the upper deck in left center. The homer was estimated at 461 feet, the longest hit at Candlestick Park this year.

The Giants also got a big at-bat from shortstop Chris Speier. For the game, Speier was 2-5 with 2 doubles and 2 walks, while adding 2 RBI. In the top of the 15th, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 2-run double. His 21st double of the season gave San Francisco a 5-3 lead.

"Man Kong hit the <expletive> out of that ball," said Speier.

09/03/1972 - Pirates Score Late, Upend Giants, 6-5, Despite Kingman Slam

The first-place Pittsburgh Pirates welcomed San Francisco to Three Rivers Stadium in their own special way.

The Pittsburgh Pirates turned back the San Francisco Giants, 6-5, at Three Rivers Stadium. Willie Stargell was named player of the game for his fine performance. He was 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 runs. Pittsburgh reliever Dave Giusti picked up the win, upping his record to 11-3. Juan Marichal absorbed the loss.

Had Manny Sanguillen not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Sanguillen hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Pirates.

Sanguillen stole the hero of the game award from the Giants' Kingman, who had put his team up confortably early in the game with his first career grand slam off RHP Steve Blass.

09/15/1972 - Kingman's Bat Goes Silent Down the Stretch

Giants slugger Dave Kingman's bat has gone quiet for at least 10 games for the third time this season. During this span, not only has he failed to leave the yard, but he has not even driven in a single run.

Despite this, he is still in 2nd and 3rd place in the NL for HR and RBI, respectively:

09/18/1972 - Giants Lose to Reds, 6-3

The Cincinnati Reds picked up a win at Riverfront Stadium, knocking off the San Francisco Giants, 6-3. Starting pitcher Don Gullett, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason why. Gullett, now 13-7, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 7 hits, while striking out 7, walking 0, and allowing 1 earned run. Pedro Borbon got the save, his 7th in 8 chances.

Tony Perez hit a 2-run triple off Jim Barr in the bottom of the first, which put the Reds in front, 2-0. Perez had 1 single, in addition to the triple. For the game, he went 2 for 4.

LHP Don Gullett called the win the result of "Everyone being in sync. My only real mistake was hanging that slider to their rookie first baseman."

In a high-scoring contest between Cincinnati and San Francisco, first baseman Tony Perez was a difference-maker. Perez, who is tied for 9th in the NL in home runs with 26, earned player of the game honors in the 15-9 Cincinnati win. He went 4-5 with a home run and 3 singles. He scored 3 times and drove in 3. The first-place Reds, at 92-60, now lead their division by 7 games.

Denis Menke, who is a two-time All-Star, aided the Cincinnati cause with a 2-run double in the bottom of the first. For the game, the third baseman went 2-2 with a double and 3 walks. He drove in 3 runs and scored once.

"I felt good up there," said Perez. "I saw the ball well."

Giants starter Jim Barr was locked-in. He led his team to a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-1. Elias Sosa, credited with the save, is now 5 for 5 in save opportunities.

The Giants got a big at-bat from first baseman Dave Kingman. In the top of the first, with a runner on 3rd, he stroked a 2-run home run off LHP Claude Osteen. His 36th home run of the season gave San Francisco a 2-0 lead.

"Kingman is still learning," said Giants manager Charile Fox. "The sky's the limit for him."

09/26/1972 - Giants Fall to Metzger, Astros; Kingman Hits 100 RBI Mark

The Houston Astros defeated the San Francisco Giants, 9-2, in NL action at Astrodome, with Houston shortstop Roger Metzger named player of the game. Jerry Reuss picked up the win, improving his season record to 23-6. He struck out 7 in 8.1 innings. The Astros bumped their record to 87-69 with this latest triumph.

Metzger had a big at-bat with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, when he hit a grand slam. The Astros went on to win.

"We'll enjoy this win," said Metzger. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."

Giants first sacker Dave Kingman hit a solo leading off the 3rd inning off LHP Jerry Reuss to hit 100 RBI for the season.

10/03/1972 - Padres Bridle Giants, 4-3

The San Diego Padres did just enough to sneak past the San Francisco Giants, 4-3, at Candlestick Park. San Diego pitcher Clay Kirby earned player of the game honors. Gary Ross converted his 10th save in 15 tries. The Padres raised their record to 60-101.

Kirby contributed a productive at-bat in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded, he hit a run-scoring single. It was one of the critical at-bats that helped San Diego get the win.

Kingman hit a late homerun off RHP Clay Kirby as the Giants tried to claw back.

End of 1972: .212/.293/.438 38 HR 102 RBI

Kong slightly underperformed vs his IRL figures of .225/.303/.462. But by playing everyday, he surpassed his IRL season totals by +9 HR and +19 RBIs.

Final Season Batting Stats:

Kong was pretty bad defensively at 1B, and dreadful at the beginning of the year at 3B, but no surpise there:

Overall. he ended up 2nd in the NL in HR for the season (Billy Williams went on a tear the last week), and finished just out of the Top 10 in RBI:

He obviously led his Giants by a comfortable margin in HR:

And RBI by a mile:

Kong also led the Giants in Runs Scored (by 5 over Bobby Bonds), and was third in SB with 18. He was considered a fast runner his younger days, and was known as an intelligent baserunner, even as he slowed down over the years.

Here is the Playoff Tree from the replay:

The Pirates and Reds won as expected in the NL, but the AL played out much differently than IRL (image from Wikipedia):

The Orioles won it all in the replay, while IRL it was the A's.

No Post Season accolades for the Sky King. In his closest contest, the Pirates' Willie Stargell beat him out for the Silver Slugger Award at 1B.

"Just proud to see my name on the same list as Pops," said Kingman. "He's a great player."

11/29/1972 - Postseason

The Giants traded RHP Steve Stone to the Chicago White Sox today. Stone was 7-5 with a 3.15 ERA for the team this year.

When asked for a comment, Giants 1B Dave Kingman said, "Sorry to lose a player like him. He's a funny guy. He'd make a good color man someday."
