Eastern League: Wellington Leads the Way

--------

The Eastern League teams took it to their Western League counterparts in February, as interleague games held center stage. East beat West by a tune of 93-53 in 147 games. One of those games, between the Wellington Athletics and Sherburn Tigers was postponed due to inclement weather late in the 9th inning with the teams tied 5-5. Only the Stratford Barons (10-12) suffered a losing record against the West. But the Downie Chiefs (14-1), Embro Suns (16-6), Wellington Athletics (14-7) and Cobourg Red Stockings (10-5) fared much better. Three of the teams, namely the Brunswick Legends, Downie Chiefs and Embro Suns, enjoyed winning streaks of ten games or more. Even the Braeland City Monarchs got in on the act, going 9-5 against the West with a six game winning streak thrown in for good measure.

Add in the first no-hitter in United Leagues history (Downie) as well as the second cycle (Fort Richmond), and you had the makings of a wild and woolly month. The teams are now gearing up for the final playoff push in March.

--------

The Wellington Athletics extended their lead in the Western League by 4.5 games, thanks to a 15-8 record and a slumping Queensland Eagles. Since December 1, the Athletics have been the hottest team in the United Leagues, going 53-23. They appear to be peaking at the right time.

Key Injuries: Wellington currently has no players on the DL.

--------

The Queensland Eagles continued their mediocre ways in February, finishing just one game above .500 on the month, going 12-11. They have lost ground to the Athletics for first place and are starting to hear footsteps as Downie and Embro close the gap in the wild card chase.

Key Injuries: RHP Stewart Colcott (2-1, 4.24) is out for another 5 weeks with shoulder inflammation he suffered in October.

--------

After a couple of months of stumbling and fumbling, the Downie Chiefs put it together in February, going 19-5 and zooming back into the wild card race. They started the month off with a bang, rattling off 14 straight victories and now sit just 3 games back of Queensland. In the process, they monopolized the headlines all month long, including their ace RHP Frank Leadbeater, who won Pitcher of the Month honours.

Key Injuries: 3B Andy Johnson (.302/.362/.426, 5 HR, 36 RBI, 47 R, 31 BB, 2.7 WAR) suffered a knee sprain on February 5; he will out 2-3 more weeks.

Performance Highlight #1: On February 5, the Chiefs throttled the Sherburn Tigers 21-7. In the course of that game they had, not one, but two players collect five hits each. 2B Wayne Balmer went 5 for 6. Balmer, who was acquired in a trade from Cobourg in January, hit an RBI single in the 1st, tripled in 2nd, singled in the 4th, flied out in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit an RBI single in the 7th. For his part, C Boyd Bedard went 5 for 5. Bedard hit an RBI single in the 1st, walked in the 3rd, hit an RBI triple in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and hit a solo home run in the 8th. Whew.

Performance Highlight #2: History was made on February 7, when starting pitcher Bradley Paris threw the first no-hitter in the United Leagues. He did it in front of his home crowd against Wolseley, defeating the Unions, 2-0. Paris recorded nine strikeouts with one walk. He faced 29 batters and threw 111 pitches, 66 for strikes. The chance for a perfect game was broken up in the top of the 3rd inning when Unions SS Philip Ducat reached first base on a throwing error.

--------

--------

The Embro Suns are getting hot at just the right time it appears as they went 16-7 in February, which included a 10-game winning streak in the middle of the month. That hot streak also included a 3-game sweep of the top team in the West, the Kingston Pelicans. In the process, they finally figured out how to win at home and improved their home record to 36-32. However, they have been bitten by the injury bug which includes Paul Hooks (.365/.450/.624, 21 HR, 73 RBI, 63 R, 60 BB, 3.9 WAR), who won Batter of the Month honours in February.

Key Injuries: RHP Freddie Ventriss (8-6, 5.22) experienced ulnar nerve irritation on January 5 and has since suffered a setback. He will miss 2 more months. LF Paul Hooks was injured while throwing on February 22. He ruptured a finger tendon and is gone for the season. 2B Alejandro Valdes suffered a torn meniscus on February 13; he is out 4 weeks.

--------

The Stratford Barons endured their second consecutive losing month, as they went 11-12 in February, to fall 9 games back of Queensland for the wildcard. Their overall record is now 65-65. Ominously, the Barons have a 0.1% of making the playoffs, according to the Pennant Chase page.

Key Injuries: RHP Ricardo Díaz (1-2, 5.80, 4 SV- torn labrum) is still out for another 4-5 months.

--------

The Cobourg Red Stockings were actually doing quite well for the first three weeks in February, racking up a 12-5 record against mostly Western League opponents. But then they lost 4 straight to Bruswick and 3 straight to Braeland City before dropping their last game of the month to Downie. That 8-game losing streak pulled their record down for the month to 12-13. They sit at .500, 9 games back of the wild card. According to the Pennant Chase page, they have a 0.3% of making the playoffs.

Key Injuries: Joel Fearn remains out of commission for 8-9 months, due to a torn rotator cuff.

--------

The Brunswick Legends went 14-11 in February, to move to within one game of .500. Their month was bolstered by a 10-game winning streak, but ended on a flat note, as they currently have lost their last 4 games. According to the Pennant Chase page, they have a 0.1% of making the playoffs.

Key Injuries: None.

--------

The Braeland City Monarchs enjoyed their best month percentage wise, as they finished February with a 15-8 record. They even improved their home record to 30-30. Their road record (24-45), however, is another matter. First overall pick 2B Trevor Bolen (.282/.319/.464, 1 HR, 15 RBI, 17 R, 5 BB, 0.8 WAR), appears to be adjusting to the big leagues just fine, giving the Monarchs some hope for next season.

Key Injuries: 39-year old relief pitcher RHP Hyo-cheong Yu (0-1, 2.22, 7 SV) is out for another 4 months. He had surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow back in November.

Performance Highlight: On February 26, C Julian Curnow went 5 for 6 against Cobourg, helping the Monarchs defeat the Red Stockings, 10-4. Curnow singled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 5th, flied out in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

Western League: Doesn’t Anybody Want to Win This Thing?

--------
Western League teams received a rude wake-up call from their Eastern League counterparts during interleague matchups last month. Of the 8 teams in the West, only two eked out a winning record in February. Five teams didn’t even reach 10 victories for the month. It was not a pretty sight and the poor showing earned the Pulberry Trolleys the distinction of being the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention. On to the carnage…..
--------

Perhaps most surprising of all, the Kingston Pelicans failed to dominate the East, and ended the month with a 10-13 record. But they remain firmly in first place, 7 games up on the Sherburn Tigers, thanks in part to the other teams’ failure to capitalize. In the West, they continue to be an outstanding team on both side of the ball. But if they reach the United Cup, they will have to step it up, if their weak performance against the East is any indication.

Key Injuries: SP Hirotada Fukushima (63/78; 1-2, 3.86) suffered elbow inflammation in a game on February 16; he will miss 3 months.

--------

The Sherburn Tigers looked as if they might be a team to be reckoned with, after going 17-10 in January. But a 9-14 February put that all in doubt. The team’s pitching performance has been underwhelming, just 5th overall, and that will have to be addressed if they want to rebound. They trail Kingston by 7 games and their lead in the wild card is now down to just four games with 4 weeks left in the regular season.
LF Robin Harney (.338/.409/.494, 1 HR, 86 RBI, 100 R, 64 BB, 30 SB, 4.4 WAR), who was acquired from Kingston has done well since joining the team, and won Batter of the Month honours in February.

Key Injuries: RF Dong-min Lee (.263/.400/.329, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 11 R, 16 BB) broke his hand in November. He should be back in 2 weeks.
2B Roy Abe (.257/.317/.351, 2 HR, 44 RBI, 55 R, 31 BB, 15 SB) suffered an oblique strain in a game against the Kingston Pelicans on January 25. He is out for two more weeks.

--------

The Hespeler Stars fared better in February (15-10) than their western counterparts and moved to within 4 games of Sherburn for the wild card. But part of that can be explained by the fact that they did not play as many interleague games as other teams did. On the other hand, they did sweep a 3-game series from the best team in the United Leagues, the Wellington Athletics, in Wellington no less, by scores of 10-7, 9-5 and 5-1. If they can carry that momentum into March, the wild card race will be very interesting, something that couldn’t be said just a month ago.

Key Injuries: SS Héctor Pagán (.308/.354/.399; 24 RBI, 29 R, 16 BB) is still out for another 4 months after suffering a torn labrum in December.

--------

Injuries and poor pitching proved to be too much for the Wolseley Unions, as they stumbled to an 8-15 record in February. At one point, they were 1-12 and mired in an 11 game losing streak, until they finished the month strong, going 7-3.

Key Injuries: OF Terence Durney (.268/.365/.482, 9 HR, 46 RBI, 54 R, 44 BB, 15 SB) suffered an oblique strain while running the bases way back on January 2. He is expected back in three days.
SP Augusto Rocha (10-7, 3.68) strained his forearm on January 13; he is out for 7 more weeks. Those are in addition to LHP Edward Hill (63/67), who has been out since early October with a ruptured bicep tendon; he is out for another 8-9 weeks.
Relief pitcher RHP Dylan Tinlsey fractured his ankle back in December. He is expected to return in 3 days.
Relief pitcher Phil Edginton (4-9, 3 SV, 5.74) strained his rotator cuff in a game on February 14, he is out for 1-2 weeks.
OF Arthur Carruth (.247/.299/.359, 4 HR, 66 RBI, 60 R, 28 BB, 1.5 WAR) tore ankle ligaments in a game on February 22; he is out 4 weeks.

--------

The Cambria Cannons bucked the trend and actually proved to be competitive against Eastern League teams, taking 4 of 5 series. But against the two Western League teams they faced, it was a mixed bag. While they swept the Fort Richmond Generals 4 games to none, they in turn were swept in the six games they played against the Hespeler Stars.
Nevertheless, they did move up in the standings, however modestly, and they do have a bonafide stud in SP Neil Guerin (16-8, 2.52, 7.9 WAR), who earned Pitcher of the Month honours in February.

Key Injuries: Starter RHP Bradley Dodson (5-8, 4.30) is expected back in 3 weeks after suffering elbow inflammation back in late December.

--------

Fears that the Fort Richmond Generals were starting to fade last month were confirmed in February, as the Generals could only muster a 9-15 record, their worst showing yet. However, they did have a couple of highlights. First they swept the Queensland Eagles, one of the top teams in the East, by scores of 6-2, 11-8 and 6-3. Second, OF Kade Limeburner completed the second cycle in United League history.

Key Injuries: None.

Performance Highlight: LF and lead-off hitter Kade Limeburner (.235/.353/.472, 15 HR, 47 RBI, 56 R, 66 BB, 1.7 WAR) hit for the cycle against the Stratford Barons on February 9. Despite his efforts, the Generals fell to the Barons, 14-7 in Stratford. Limburner doubled in the 1st, struck out in the 2nd, hit a two-run triple in the 4th, hit a solo-shot in the 6th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.

--------

--------

The Balmoral Giants are just one of two teams that have yet to enjoy a winning month. That trend continued in February with a 5-18 record. Ouch. That included an 11-game losing streak that carried over from late January. Apart from SP David Cooling (12-14, 4.06, 4.6 WAR), the Giants just do not have any highly rated players. They do have a fairly strong farm system (4th overall), so there is some hope.

Key Injuries: Starter SP Masahiro Sugano (2-6, 4.52) remains out for another 5-6 months with a torn elbow ligament.
SP Noriaki Ito (5-17, 3.52, 4.7 WAR) suffered shoulder inflammation in a game against the Stratford Barons. He is expected back in a week.

--------

The Pulberry Trolleys earned the dubious distinction of becoming the first team to be officially eliminated from the United Cup playoffs. A 5-18 record will do that. And just like the Giants, the Trolleys endured an 11-game losing streak and have yet to enjoy a winning monthly record. It was a long February, and mercifully, there’s just one month left in the season. Unfortunately, the Trolleys currently have the worst rated farm system in the Leagues. It may be long, slow climb to contention for the Trolleys.

Key Injuries: CF Rio Gidley (.265/.320/.450, 6 HR, 57 RBI, 65 R, 37 BB, 18 SB, 2.6 WAR) suffered another injury when he fractured his finger in a game on February 26; he will be out of commission for 5 weeks.
SP Nick Paddock is still out for 3 months; he suffered a ruptured bicep tendon in late November.
2B Michael Batterham (.276/.362/.380, 5 HR, 47 RBI, 46 R, 58 BB, 2.5 WAR) strained his hamstring in a game against the Queensland Eagles on the 19th. He is gone for 3 weeks.
SS Datu Balsalubra (.325/.383/.422, 3 HR, 41 RBI, 26 R, 28 BB, 2.0 WAR) separated his shoulder in a collision at home plate on February 26 against the Wellington Athletics. He is out for 5 weeks.

Thank you so much for the kind words, Bottom of the Sixth. It was our conversation in an email a little while ago that finally gave me the impetus to create this dynasty, after sitting on my hands.
So, thanks again!

Regular Season Wrap-up

The United Cup playoffs are set, as the Wellington Athletics and Kingston Pelicans took top spot in their respective leagues, with the Queensland Eagles and Sherburn Tigers each taking the wild card.

Wellington made things far more interesting in the East than needed, as they stumbled in March, going just 11-14 for the month. That allowed Queensland, who went 14-10, and the Downie Chiefs (16-10) to make a push for first place in the final weeks of the season. In the end, Wellington’s lead was just too much to overcome, and they held on to top spot by 1 game over the Eagles. The hottest team in the East in March was actually the Stratford Barons (17-7) who leap frogged Embro in the standings and finished 6 games back of the wild card.

In the West, the Kingston Pelicans provided no drama, as they cruised to first place with a 20-6 record in March, finishing 12 games over the Sherburn Tigers. After a disastrous February (9-14), Sherburn rebounded in March (14-10). In the end, it probably didn’t matter, as the Hespeler Stars (11-15) faltered. Just four games back of Sherburn when the month began; the Stars finished 8 games back.

Eastern League Pennant Series

Wellington Athletics (89-65) vs. Queensland Eagles (88-66)
Season Matchup: 11-4 in favour of Wellington

Game 1
Wellington 8 – Queensland 3

The Athletics set the tone early in this game, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the first, which included a 2-run triple by 2B Tom Addis off of Queensland starter Darren Stewart. Wellington made it 4-0 when LF Quentin Stubber`s single brought in SP Raúl Lucero.
Queensland first run came in the 3rd inning thanks to a solo home run by C Oscar Clapp off of Wellington`s Lucero. But Lucero got that run back himself in the bottom of the 3rd. After two walks and a single by RF Colin Blyth loaded the bases, Lucero hit into a fielder`s choice, bringing in 1B Byron Tope. Wellington added two more in the bottom of the 7th, with an RBI triple by SS Gabriel Fairless and an RBI ground out by relief pitcher Bryan Newitt. Queensland added runs in the top of 7th and 9th, but it wasn`t enough as the Athletics handled the first game easily.
The Eagles suffered a serious blow when SS Katsunan Chikafuji (.346/.401/.551, 21 HR, 95 RBI, 127 R, 64 BB, 8.7 WAR) injured himself in the bottom of the 8th inning while throwing the ball. He suffered a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament and is gone for 6 months.
Despite the loss, the Player of the Game was Eagles 3B Nam-cheol Oh, who went 3 for 4, with a double, a walk and 2 RBI.

Game 2
Wellington 8 – Queensland 1

The Athletics picked up where they left off in game 1, opening the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. CF Bob Boynton’s two-out triple scored 2B Ryley McLarnon, while 1B Byron Top singled in Boynton.
Wellington broke it open in the 3rd inning with 4 runs off of 5 singles. Three consecutive 1-out singles by Boynton, Tope and C Dylan Watkins scored Boynton to make it 3-0. After a walk by 3B John Brown loaded the bases, back-to-back singles by SP Júlio Perara and LF Quentin Stubber scored three more before Perara was thrown out at third to end the inning.
Queensland’s lone run came in the top of the 5th inning, when C Oscar Clapp doubled in 3B Nam-cheol Oh, who had just singled and reached second on an error.
Wellington added runs in the 7th and 8th innings to round out the scoring.
SP Júlio Perara (9.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1.00 ERA) was selected as the Player of the Game. CF Bob Boynton hit two triples, going 4 for 5 with two RBI and 2 R.

Western League Pennant Series

Kingston Pelicans (99-55) vs. Sherburn Tigers (87-67)
Season Matchup: 11-4 in favour of Kingston

Game 1
Sherburn 12 – Kingston 4

The Tigers drew first blood in their matchup with the Pelicans, pounding Kingston for 12 runs. After opening the scoring with a run in the 2nd inning, the Tigers broke it open in the top of the 4th. LF Robin Harney would both lead off the inning and end it with groundouts. In between, 7 of 8 Tigers got on base thanks to three walks, three singles and a 2-run double by SS Gary Watkinson. When the top half was over, Sherburn led 7-0.
Kingston got on the scoreboard in the bottom half. RF Chong-sik Lee led off with a double, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. But after SS Okura Ito singled and 1B Fergus Chitty walked, 2B Mo Symes doubled them in. C Cereneo Tolentino immediately scored Symes with a single to make it 7-3 Sherburn after four.
Sherburn would get those runs back in the top of the 6th. After SP Hyo-jun Kim led off with a single and 2B Roy Abe reached first on an error, CF Joshua Chown singled them in. That would be all for Pelicans’ SP Brady Murdy. Sherburn added another run before the inning was over to make it 10-3 Tigers.
Sherburn added two more runs in the 8th. After Watkinson was hit by a pitch, Harney tripled him home. C Joe Gault singled to score Harney and make it 12-3.
Lee hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 8th, but that was all the scoring Kingston could muster, and the Tigers took game 1.
Sherburn’s CF Joshua Chown earned Player of the Game honours, going 3 for 6, with 3 singles, 3 RBI and 2 R.

Game 2
Kingston 5 – Sherburn 4

Fans would see their first close game of playoffs in Game 2. Kingston opened the scoring in the bottom of 1st, when SS Okura Ito doubled with two out and scored on 1B Fergus Chitty’s single.
C Cereneo Tolentino led off the bottom of the 3rd with a line drive home run off of SP Yasushi Kobayashi. CF Shoshu Shimizu then singled with two out and scored when RF Chong-sik Lee tripled, making it 3-0 Pelicans.
1B Jeaic Risbrough got the Tigers on the board when he led the top of the 5th inning with a solo shot to straight-away center off of SP Masahiro Sugahara.
Kingston added two more runs in the bottom of the 6th. SP Kobayashi loaded the bases when he allowed a Tolentino double, a walk to 3B Albert Howard and hit Shimizu with one out. A Lee single scored Tolentino and a ground-out by Ito allowed Howard to score to make it 5-1 Pelicans after six.
But the Tigers fought back, getting a run in the top of the 7th. Down to their last out in the 9th, Risbrough walked on 4 straight pitches and went to third after C Joe Gault reached safely on an error. 3B Mick Lanfear followed with a single, scoring both Risbrough and Gault, who beat out the throw at home plate. But the game ended when RF William Neal grounded out to first base, and Kingston held on to a 5-4 victory to tie up the series at 1 game apiece.
Kingston SP Masahiro Sugahara picked up Player of the Game honours, pitching 8 innings, allowing 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 HR and 4 K, for a 2.25 ERA.

Eastern League Pennant Series

Game 3
Wellington 9 – Queensland 4

The Athletics won game 3, taking advantage of Eagles miscues and also taking a 3 games to none lead in the series.
Queensland got on the board first, when singles by 2B Jilineko Balignasay, SS In-sin Moon, LF Jonathan Matby and 1B Quentin Puddy brought in Balignasay in the bottom half of the 1st.
Wellington responded in the 2nd, when a 2B Tom Addis triple brought home LF Bob Boynton.
Wellington took the lead in the 3rd, when a C Dylan Watkins single scored 3B Ryley McLarnon, who had led off the inning with a triple.
Queensland took their first lead in the series in the 4th. SP Julius Hunt singled in Quentin Puddy, who had reached third on a double play, to tie the score. Jilineko Balignasay then singled in RF Ben Watson, who had been intentionally walked. Queensland led 3-2 after 4 innings.
But the Eagles would lose the lead in the 7th. CF Colin Blyth reached second on an error, and advanced to third base after SS Gabriel Fairless grounded out. He then came in to score when Eagles SP Julius Hunt dropped the throw while covering first base, allowing SP Michael Hanley to reach base safely with two outs.
Wellington took the lead for good in the 8th, thanks to RF Quentin Stubber’s two-run homer.
They would put the game out of reach in the 9th, scoring 4 runs, thanks to doubles by Colin Blyth and Quentin Stubber and singles by Gabriel Fairless and 1B Onel Arcusa.
Queensland’s final run in the bottom of the 9th proved costly. Jonathan Matby hit a one-out double but was injured on the play and replaced by Sadatake Mizuno. A single by Quentin Puddy drove in Mizumo to make the score 9-4. C Oscar Clapp then hit into a double play to end the game.
Jonathan Matby was diagnosed with hamstring tendinitis in the 9th inning. He will be out 2-3 weeks.
RF Quentin Stubber would earn Play of the Game honours, going 2 for 4, with 1 HR, 1-2B, 2 R, 1 BB and 4 RBI.

Game 4
Queensland 3 – Wellington 1

The Eagles staved off elimination thanks to an outstanding pitching performance by SP Darren Stewart.
Wellington got on the board first when 1B Byron Tope drove in C Dylan Watkins from third in the top of the first. But Stewart would shut them down the rest of the way.
Queensland got all the offense they needed in the 4th. RF Sadatake Mizuno led off with a double and reached third on a passed ball by SP Raúl Lecero. Mizuno came in to score on a sac fly by LF Tony Dan. SS In-sin Moon singled and scored on C Oscar Clapp’s double. Clapp came in to score on an error at first base to make it 3-1 Eagles.
SP Darren Stewart (9.0 IP, 9 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, 1.00 ERA) won Player of the Game honours.

Western League Pennant Series

Game 3
Kingston 7 – Sherburn 5

Kingston took game 3 from the Tigers, scoring 7 runs on 15 hits.
Pelicans opened the scoring in the 1st. Leadoff hitter CF Shoshu Shimizu hit a double, reached third on a ground out and scored on a sac fly to left field.

Quote:
Parliament Approves Establishment of U.S. Naval Base in Cardigan Bay
Escalating Japanese Aggression in China Spurs House to Action

BRAELAND CITY, July 7 (BP) – By a vote of 105-14, Parliament gave overwhelming approval today to the establishment of a United States fueling base in Cardigan Bay at Cambria. Declaring it was time to “end Parliament’s vacillation and stand up and be counted”, Braeland Prime Minister Douglas Avery urged all sitting members to ratify the Braelander-American agreement that has been hotly debate since it was introduced in the House two weeks ago.

Citing recent reports of a horrific massacre in Nanking, China’s capital, at the hands of the Imperial Japanese Army, and the apparent escalation of the Sino-Japanese war in Kiangsu Province, Prime Minister Avery gave an impassioned speech calling for action at the start of morning sessions.

“The reports by Mr. [John] Rabe of the terrible atrocities committed in and around Nanking horrify us and give us pause; they show the extent to which the Empire of Japan will go to achieve their ends. And make no mistake; Japanese aggression in the Republic of China is merely a staging area for further aggression in the Pacific. Braeland cannot continue deluding itself into thinking that it is too remote to be affected by international conflicts. It is time for action and to take appropriate measures for the defense of Braeland.”

Heeding the Prime Minister’s call to take up the issue of the establishment of an American naval base in Cardigan Bay “without delay”, the lower House immediately agreed to end debate and voted on the accord. Upon leaving the House following the successful vote, Prime Minister Avery praised members for putting Braeland ahead of partisan feelings.

“This wasn’t about a government or a party getting its way; this was about doing what was in the best interests of the country, and that’s what happened in the House today. I applaud all members for taking action at this most crucial time. The South Pacific has been made more secure because of this.”

The agreement between Braeland and the United States to establish a naval fueling base in Cardigan Bay for supporting American naval operations in the South Pacific was primarily the work of Braeland’s Minister of Defence Charles Corry and Claude A. Swanson, United States Secretary of the Navy. The agreement calls for the provision of tank storage for 200,000 barrels of fuel oil and 38,000 barrels of gasoline, a seaplane base, installations necessary for a defense detachment of 3,500 men and suitable harbour facilities. The facility will form a key part in maintaining a line of military defense and communication in the South Pacific, a line that currently stretches 7,800 miles, from Panama to Sydney, Australia.

But the agreement has its critics, who express fears that the measure signals a potential threat to the freedom of Japanese citizens residing and working in Braeland. Braeland is home to about 34,000 citizens of Japanese background. Although that represents just 0.3% of Braeland’s total population, it is significant to a country that has only recently begun to enjoy friendly and open relations with Japan, especially since the re-establishment of the Monarchy.

Observing these developments, both home and abroad, is the United Leagues and its associated minor leagues. The League reports that it currently employs approximately 90 players and 7 coaching personnel who are from Japan. A number of Japanese-born players enjoyed success this past season in the United Leagues, such as Kingston’s SS Okura Ito and Stratford’s SP Kazuhiko Chikafuji. But native-born Braelanders of Japanese descent, such as Queensland’s star player SS Katsunan Chikafuji may also be in the crosshairs if the country succumbs to a war hysteria mentality, a fear that opponents to a United States naval base in Braeland feel can only grow in light of today’s developments.

The government, however, has been quick to try and ease such fears, stressing that this action is not directed at ordinary citizens, but to a potential threat that may or may not transpire. “This is an act of reason, not an act of unreasonableness”, stressed Minister of External Affairs, Gerald Stone.

For his part, United Leagues Commissioner Dr. David Westfall, refused to comment directly on the debate, simply stating that the Leagues will continue to work closely with its players and management to ensure that all are treated with respect and due consideration to any situation they may find themselves in.

“The make-up of the United Leagues reflects the makeup of the country; we have players and coaches and managers from all sorts of backgrounds and cultures, and the Leagues embrace that, just as the country does. And we will continue to embrace it.”

But the Commissioner declined to speculate on the impact a heightened military threat in the Pacific would have on baseball in Braeland.

“Obviously there are more important things in life than baseball”, the Commissioner allowed, “but to comment on hypotheticals would not be productive at this point, and frankly, it would serve no useful purpose. What we do know is that we have just come off a tremendous inaugural season in the United Leagues and we are gearing for another successful season in October. That is our focus.”

Following its successful passage through the Lower House, the agreement is now being sent to the Senate for its approval. However, it is expected to pass easily. Barring any unexpected delays, ground breaking for the new naval facility is slated for the first week in August.

The Coconut Leagues are in the books and Opening Day has arrived. In this portion, we’ll look at the results of Spring Training as well as the projections for the teams in each League, starting in the East:

The defending Eastern League champions, the Wellington Athletics, finished on top of the standings, but if the projections mean anything, they will have a fight on their hands, just like last year. Only, instead of the Queensland Eagles being their primary foe, they will be battling the likes of the Stratford Barons and Embro Suns for a playoff berth. Not only that, but the Eagles and Brunswick Legends may also put up a challenge, perhaps hinting at a tight race down the stretch.

The Barons’ strength would appear to be in their pitching, as they are projected to have three pitchers enjoy Top 10 success:

• Ryan Borden (19-7, 2.75)
• Justin Hayhurst (17-12, 2.70)
• Kazuhiko Chikafuji (19-10, 3.07)

Along with a position player:

• Bryan Livesley (.314, 16 HR, 101 RBI)

The Athletics and Suns each had three position players projected to have Top 10 success, as well as one starting pitcher. Perhaps it’s no coincidence then that they are projected to finish within a game of each other in the standings.

For the Suns:

• Anthony Stavely (.356, 22 HR, 114 RBI)
• Paul Hooks (.322, 23 HR, 102 RBI)
• Jake Walker (.331, 4 HR, 86 RBI)
• Colm Soper (20-8, 2.55)

For the Athletics:

• Quentin Stubber (.303, 16 HR, 80 RBI)
• Bob Boynton (.309, 16 HR, 116 RBI)
• Ryley McLarnon (.336, 3 HR, 101 RBI)
• Clyde Boney (18-9, 3.09)

--------

Now, a look at the Western League:

The Kingston Pelicans finished with the best record in the West, indeed, the best record overall, but they are not projected to be quite as dominate like last season. At least two teams appear ready to challenge them: the Balmoral Giants and Pulberry Trolleys. What makes this all the more interesting is that they are coming off the two worst finishes from the previous season, and neither of them made much of an impression in Spring Training.

If looking at projected Top 10 performances only, the Pelicans would appear to be scary good, having no less than two position players and three pitchers making an appearance:

• Okura Ito (.340, 21 HR, 105 RBI)
• Fergus Chitty (.285, 29 HR, 108 RBI)
• Brady Murdy (20-12, 3.44)
• Hirotada Fukushima (18-10, 3.09)
• Joey Cumberledge (16-15, 2.92)

The fact is, the Pelicans are loaded with talent and have easily the best infield in the United Leagues. Only in centerfield, rightfield and the bullpen, could they be considered below average.

For the Giants, they have one position player and one pitcher in the Top 10:

• Ninfa Puzon (.329, 8 HR, 70 RBI)
• David Cooling (18-12, 2.84)

For the Trolleys, it’s a similar story:

• Finlay Petty (.320, 16 HR, 98 RBI)
• Owen Tautor (19-7, 3.34)

While projections are nice and all, the Kingston Pelicans appear to be just too dominate a team to be seriously challenged for top spot, barring major injuries of course. It looks like the only race in the West will be for the wild card this season.

Eastern League: Monarchs Reign Supreme

--------

If there’s one lesson that Season 2 is teaching us one month into class, it’s that this is not Season 1. Last year’s doormat, the Braeland City Monarchs, is enjoying the view from the penthouse in the Eastern League. Now, this is just one month of course, not a whole season, so we mustn’t get ahead of ourselves. But still, baseball fans are certainly enjoying the uncertainty of the early season, where just 4.5 games separate top spot from 7th. Here’s hoping the rest of the way continues as a free for all.

---------

Here a look at the top 3 teams in the East:

For the first two weeks in October, the Braeland City Monarchs were losing twice as many games as they won (4-8) and everything was going according to script. But then, they found their groove and went 13-3 the rest of the way. Heading into November, they find themselves in first place, a half-game up on the Stratford Barons. Offense has been the main story, as the Monarchs lead in a host of batting stats. But their pitching has not been bad either, finishing 1st in ERA (3.48) and 2nd in Starters’ ERA (3.44). Standout performances not only propelled the club to the top of the standings, but also captured all three Player of the Month honours in the East.

Key Injuries: 40-year old relief pitcher RHP Hyo-cheong Yu is injured again, having suffered a torn elbow ligament in Spring Training. He is expected back in two weeks. Maybe.

Performance Highlights: A pair of rookies helped propel the Monarchs to the top of the standings in October and both enjoyed 5-hit games.

First, Adam Ashley went 5 for 6 against the Embro Suns on October 6, as the Monarchs blocked out the Suns 14-6. Ashley doubled in the 1st, tripled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 5th, flied out in the 7th and hit an RBI single in the 8th. The speedy Ashley currently leads off in the batting order for Braeland City.

On October 30, Trevor Bolen went 5 for 5 against the Stratford Barons. Bolen singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, doubled in the 5th, hit a two-run double in the 6th and hit an RBI single in the 8th. The Monarchs won 8-7. Bolen, who was the first overall pick in last season’s amateur draft, has settled in nicely, batting 4th against righties and 5th against lefties. He is also seeing playing time at both 2B and LF.

--------

If not for the Monarchs, the Stratford Barons would have been the talk of October, as they compiled a 16-11 record. The Barons appear to be a nicely balanced team, averaging 1st to 3rd in a majority of categories. Only in Starters’ ERA (5th – 4.02) are they below average thus far.

Key Injuries: RHP Finley Van tore an elbow ligament in Spring Training; he is expected to miss another 8 weeks.

Performance Highlight: C Gavin Hurley has been sensational for the Barons in the early going and enjoyed a 5 for 5 game against the Downie Chiefs on October 4. Hurley singled in the 1st, hit an RBI double in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th, singled in the 8th and flied out in the 9th (sac fly). Despite his efforts, the Barons lost 10-9 in the bottom of the 9th.

--------

The Embro Suns are hot on the heels of the Monarchs and Barons, as they finished October with a 16-12 record. Offensively, they are just fine, averaging 2nd-3rd in most categories, but are struggling in pitching and defense. Starter’s ERA (7th-4.12) and defensive eff. (7th-.664) will have to improve for them to maintain their success.

Key Injuries: 1B Anthony Stavely (.330/.373/.593, 6 HR, 22 RBI, 15 R, 7 BB), one of the League’s top players, was hit by a pitch and fractured his cheekbone in a game against the Barons back on October 15. He is out for another 4 weeks.

Western League: Pelicans Have Company

--------

Similar to the Braeland City Monarchs, the Balmoral Giants languished near the bottom of the standings last season. But in October, the Giants enjoyed a view at the top alongside the defending champions, the Kingston Pelicans. In fact, only 7.5 games separate first from last, with the Giants and Pelicans tied for top spot. The Cambria Cannons are not far behind, as they are tied for second with the Sherburn Tigers, 2.5 games back of first.

--------

Here’s a look at the top 4 teams in the West:

The Balmoral Giants have been very impressive in both pitching (1st – 2.96 ERA) and defense (1st - .723), but have been rather lackluster on offense (5th – 7th). But they have done enough to earn them a tie for top spot in the West. While they went 5-5 at home in October, they were impressive on the road, going 13-5.

Key Injuries: None.

Performance Highlight: Domenic Carmody made history on October 7, as he became the first player in the United Leagues to hit 3 home runs in a game. He accomplished it against the Pelicans no less, helping the Giants to 10-2 victory. Camody hit a solo-shot in the 2nd, hit another solo-shot in the 4th and a two-run home run in the 5th. All of them came off of SP-LHP Dave Mapp. Carmody walked in the 7th and grounded out in the 9th.

--------

The Kingston Pelicans started off the season with a 3-game sweep of the Wolseley Unions, but then were swept themselves in four games at home by the Balmoral Giants. That appeared to wake them up, as they went 15-6 the rest of the month. That stretch also included a 3-game sweep of the Giants in Balmoral. Does this portend a rivalry in the making? The Pelicans have started out strong again on offense (1st-2nd in a score of categories) as well as pitching/defense (3rd in ERA and def. eff.)

Key Injuries: United Cup MVP LF Jayden Tennant dislocated his finger in a Spring Training game in September. He should be back in two weeks.

--------

The Cambria Cannons find themselves just 2.5 games of first place in the early going. Their main strength thus far has been their pitching (2nd – ERA). However, they have been fairly mediocre on offense (5th – 6th). How long they can stay in the thick of things remains to be seen.

Key Injuries: None.

--------

The month of October for the Sherburn Tigers can be summed up in one name: Gary Watkinson. On route to winning Batter of the Month honours, he was also player of the week in Week 2 and is currently on a 28-game hitting streak (29 is the record in the young League). On offense, the Tigers rival the Pelicans (1st – 2nd in a number of categories) but are absolutely horrendous in pitching/defense (8th in seven categories, 7th in two). At least they know what they have to work on.

Key Injuries: None.
