Sad News

I was having a coffee this morning with a mutual friend of Matt (Penfold75) and mine this morning and we were talking about the Hockey and the Braehead Clan. He asked if I knew Matt and I said I did. He told me that Matt was taken into hospital late last night and that he has been battling cancer since November last year.

I saw him at a Clan game a few months back and he didn't look well but when I asked he changed the subject back to the game as he seemed to not want to upset his daughter.

It was quite devastating to hear this news and I thought that people on the board might want to know and keep him in their prayers.

Great, thoughtful guy. He mentioned in another thread that he was going to be headed to the hospital and essentially "signed off." My thoughts are with him.

Oh geez, hopefully he'll be alright then. I didn't think it'd be something this serious when he mentioned the other day going to the hospital. That is definitely scary news.

Battles can be fought on Ice and in a ring... The toughest fight and the truest warriors are the ones who battle for they're health..

Best wishes and prayers headed your way Matt..

Knowing penfold through these forums the last couple years he seems like a battler. Best wishes though this fight. I hope to see you back on these forums soon!

I know these forums have been full of negativeity in general as of recently (that will change) but the forums are a tight knit community and When a serious illness falls on a valued and respected member we are all united. It's always tough to hear but we all are thinking about you, Penfold. Here's to a full and speedy recovery!

I have to agree with Dave1927p as what I know of Matt he seems quite a strong guy and one with a wicked sense of humour. Only guy I know who has edited his own post due to 'grammatical mayhem'. I'm visiting him Tuesday night with some mutual friends will keep the board posted.

I want to thank everyone for their kind messages. As the first post says I found out I had a brain tumour in November. It was detected quite quickly due to me having dizzy spells, the worst headaches imaginable and slurred speech that wasn't caused by the beer at the hockey.

The plan was to go into hospital today as I have been awaiting surgery, however the chemotherapy drugs I have been taking have been making me really sick of late so I was advised to go in early. A blast of radiotherapy in February and the chemo drugs have shrunk the tumour and they feel confident about removing it with surgery.

So once more thanks for the kind words but I'm not going anywhere until the Jets win the Stanley Cup at least.

By this logic, Leaf fans are effectively immortal.

Very true. Then again the Jets might win it tonight or tomorrow as the drugs I am on the hallucinations are quite convincing

It all started about August last year with the headaches, blurred vision, dizziness and my speech wasn't great. People around me kept asking if I was alright. But being a guy I left it about two months before going to the doctor and it was another month or so before I had my scan and they found the tumour. So my advice to anyone is if you notice any significant change in yourself or a pain that isn't going away, get your ass to the doctor might just save your life.
