Question about free agents/offering arbitration
I am in the offseason and need to make arbitration decisions soon; I have a number of free agents whom I can either cut loose outright or offer them arbitration in hopes of either re-signing them or possibliy getting draft pick compensation. I have a question about how to determine how much he might ask for if he chooses to accept arbitration.
For example, I have a free agent to be that made about 10MIL last season, was released, and I signed him to a prorated 2MIL contract, so that's 12MIL he earned last season. He is a type B free agent. If I offered him arb (I'd like to have him back but only on my terms) and get a draft pick if he walks away, is there any way to determine what amount he would ask for or get in arb? Obviously if he were to get 10MIL in arb for example (after exploring the market it's likely he wouldn't get a multiyear, big $ contract), I would shed a few tears. |

Under your salary obligations page it should give you an estimate of what he is worth in arbritration. Sometimes you can offer lower and the Arbitor will decide in your favor but sometimes they will rule in the favor of the player and give him more than that number.
That number does give you a ballpark figure though.

For what it's worth, it is very, very rare in OOTP for pending free agents to accept arbitration. I haven't seen it yet, so I'm just as curious about this as you are. If you want him back "on your own terms" I would think you would just offer him the contract you are willing to pay. If he accepts fine, if not, fine. Arbitration is, by definition, not on your own terms.

The poster is talking about pending Type A and B free agents on your team. You have to offer them arbitration before they walk in order to get the compensation when another team signs them. But it's just a check box, you don't enter an arbitration offer like you do for normal arbitration-eligible players.
