Striking a blow for accountants!

As I toil long hours during tax filing season, this story made my day.

CC, there is simply no accounting for this type of thing happening in professional hockey.

EDIT: Actually, he looked rather good in the net in those videos (plus he seems like a funny, humble guy in his interview). But the interesting thing is, how were the Blackhawks even aware of this guy, who had not played a competitive hockey game in 12 years!? I mean, why him? Was he sitting in the stands and the club made a PA announcement? "Yo, anybody play goalie out there? Please come to Gate 7C."

They probably don't expect an emergency goalie to ever see the net. So not a lot goes into their selection. Keep in mind that two goalies had to be injured in order for him to see playing time. One in practice and one at game time. He's actually their 4th goaltender in line. So yeah, they're probably not too picky as to who that will be.

Definitely a great story for him. I worked in the accounting department for Verizon for 9 years and even though the pace is probably the same, I can assure you he had a hell of a lot more fun playing goalie for the Blackhawks.

Good on him. If I was ever asked to fill in for a professional sports team I would probably be vomiting over and over on the ice/field/pitch

According to NHL rules every team must have a back up goalie in the arena just in case this happens, most are usually coaches or someone within the organisation with goalie experience. The Kings actually had try outs so they could have an “EBUG” at every game.

Well, he's got to be feeling good about himself. A pencil pusher (no offense, CC and Ragnar; I am in finance myself, with rolled-up sleeves, so accounting and me see a lot of each other) being able to stop 7 NHL shots on goal!

Here in the states it's ice/field/court.

None taken as now I am a shovel jockey. I never would have thought it possible, but the pencil pusher job was probably worse for my health.

Just a couple more things to round out this thread. The first one explains about the "crew of recreational goaltenders" regularly on hand "in case of emergencies for either team." Either team! I assume this is standard NHL procedure?

The second one I included because it made my day, again. Can you imagine? It's like something out of a sappy movie, only when it's real life, it raises the arm hair and brings a much-needed smile to one's face.

This sort of thing happens every couple years or so in the NHL. Given the woes that the Blackhawks have had in goal this year, maybe they should give Foster a long-term contract.

I toiled overseas for three seasons (baseball, not hockey) after college holding out hope to get a shot at glory. Was also hoping that Germany would host a Summer Olympics in the 90's, that would've worked, too (my mother is German).

So all I can say to that dude is savor that 14 minutes for the rest of your life.

It's stories like this that makes the NHL great.

It's stories like these that make the game a little bit more human and imaginable.

Back in the 1960's this happened in the NFL --see QB Tom Kennedy for the Giants in 1966.

http://www.nfl.com/player/tomkennedy...45/careerstats

Not a bad stat line for a guy they had to bring in from a Brooklyn semi-pro team because Earl Morrall and Gary Wood both got hurt.
