During the break, we made some roster moves:
RP Wade Ellis (24-R) has been sent to Vancouver and Dave Unterbrink (30-R) has been called up. Unterbrink missed the 1st half of the season with an injury and pitched in 3 games for Vancouver before the All-Star game and is currently suffering from some forearm stiffness. He should be good to go by Saturday (when he will probably get hurt again).

C Marcell Amici (31-R) and C Jim Shippy (30-R_ have been called up and C Craig Petitto (26-R) and LF Sergio Vallejo (26-R) have been sent down.

The East Division leading Kansas City Royals are here to kick off the second half with a 4 game series through the weekend. They lost 3 of 4 in Los Angeles before the All-Star Break, getting shutout 3 straight times in the final 3 games of the series. We split 4 games with them in Kansas City the second series of the season. They are 11th in the PCL in scoring with 4.12 runs per game (Portland is still last with 3.63). They are 2nd in fewest runs allowed with 3.27 per game (Portland is down to 11th with 4.61). They have a team ERA of 2.86, but Los Angeles has a ridiculous team ERA of 2.46.

Kansas City Royals (50-36 .581 in 1st place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (34-53 .391 21.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

KC: George Wiedemann (24-R 8-8 3.93) vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (22-R 8-7 3.23) Rookie

We have not faced Wiedemann before. He is their #2 starter.

Johnson pitched a 6 hit shutout his last time out.

Kansas City Royals (52-36 .591 in 1st place in the PCL East) at

KC: Reggie Tieken (25-R 8-5 3.23) Rookie vs. POR: Ricardo Gil (22-R 2-3 4.13) Rookie

Tieken went 8.2 innings and gave us 3 runs in Kansas City back in April. We won the game in extra innings.

Gil has not pitch in over two months. I should have sent him to A ball to get in shape, but I figure he can't be any worse right now than what the other options are. He'll prove me wrong today, I am certain.

Salt Lake City is in Portland to play a 4 game series. They just split 4 games at home with San Francisco. We lost 3 of 4 in Salt Lake City back at the beginning of May. They are 3rd in the PCL in scoring with 4.66 runs per game (Portland is still last and falling with 3.55). The Bees have scored 101 runs more than we have in 91 games. They are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.65 per game (Portland is 10th with 4.57). We have allowed 7 fewer runs than them. Their pitchers lead the Majors in most home runs allowed (98).

Salt Lake City Bees (52-39 .571 1.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East) at

SLC: Noe Rubio (27-L 3-4 3.67) vs. POR: Rex Williams (24-R 1-4 4.66) Rookie

We have not faced Rubio before. He has pitched 6 straight Quality Starts going 48 innings with a 2.44 ERA in those games, but went only 1-3.

Williams only allowed 2 runs in 7 IP in his last start, a no decision.

PH Jose Julio (27-R) gets beaned... Frankie Clontz flies out to center.

Top of the Seventh:

New Pitcher: Jennings Sims (28-R). Don Neumann (31-S) is in to play right. Steve Rizkallah lines one to left center and it makes it to the wall and no one can run the dern ball down and he circles the bases with an inside the park home run... 6 to 4, Bees.

We are in California's capital to play the Solons a 3 game series over the weekend. They just split 4 games in San Antonio. We are 2-4 against them on the season and split a pair of games the last time we were here, back in May. They are 14th in scoring in the PCL with 3.96 runs per game (Portland is still last with 3.64). Sacramento is the only team in the PCL that has hit fewer home runs than Portland (50 to 58). They are 5th in fewest runs allowed with 4.02 per game (Portland is still 10th with 4.53).

We are in Los Angeles to play the front running Angels a 2 game set. They just lost 2 of 3 here against San Francisco and have lost 4 of their last 5 games and have lost 3 of their starting pitchers, which was the main strength of their team. Of course, we get to to face one they did not lose today... We are 2-7 against them on the season and lost 2 of 3 the last time we were here back in May. The Angels are 14th in scoring in the PCL with 3.92 runs per game (Portland is last with 3.70). They are 1st in fewest runs allowed with 2.91 per game (Portland is up to 8th with 4.45). Their pitchers lead in virtually every category.

We have not faced Fields this season. He lost his last start, giving up 6 runs in 7.1 IP at Milwaukee.

We are back home in Portland to play the Houston Astros a 4 game series through the weekend. They just split 2 games in Dallas. We lost 3 of 4 in Houston the first time we played them back in early May. They are 9th in the PCL in scoring with 4.38 runs per game (Portland is still last with 3.65). They are dead last in fewest runs allowed with 5.34 per game (Portland is still 8th with 4.38). The League is hitting .285 against their hurlers, worst in Baseball.
