Jeff Gray 1988 UIN? Reds

Jeff Gray on his first team, not on the UIN list but I don't think we had this one.

This photo of Gray is used in the pitchers pack (from which the UIN list is derived), listed as jeff_gray_reds.

That said, there are a couple of things to keep in mind when reading the UIN list:

First the list covers only those players who debuted between 1925 and 1989 (some but not all 1990 debuts are also included).

Second, the game Pegasus27 was playing when he first created the list allowed for only one photo per year for each player/league combination. For example, if a pitcher played for the Dodgers for several years, then was traded to the Reds mid-season and signed with the Pirates prior to the following spring training the pitchers pack would probably have Dodgers and Pirates images, but may not include a Reds photo. With the original list design, even if there was no Reds image it is unlikely that Pegasus would have the player's Reds photo listed as UIN.

At my last count there are still around 400 of these partial-season player/team combinations I haven't checked.

Bobby Stevens (1907-2005) - shortstop, 1931 Phillies

Bobby Stevens hit .343 in 35 at bats in his only trip to the majors with the 1931 Phillies. He was the oldest living
Phillie for the last 6 or 7 years of his life. Here he visits the Phillies at Veterans Stadium and chats with Phils pitcher,
Randy Wolf in August 2000. Stevens was 98 years and 8 months old when he passed away in late December 2005.

1961- Dell Sports - Baseball Stars: Minnie Minoso

This is a very odd photo choice for Dell Sports' 1961 Baseball
Stars Magazine. This photo ran on Minnie Minoso's page,
who was chosen as one of the top 10 batters in the majors
at that time. Did the editor make a creative and original photo choice or was this choice wacky and silly? You decide!
1960 would turn out to be Minoso's last all-star
year and 1961 would be his last year as a regular.
He had a nightmarish 1962 season with the Cardinals where he had a fractured skull from running into a fence trying to make a catch and was out for 10 weeks (mid-May to late July). Minnie also sustained
a serious wrist injury and missed more time. Having averaged about 170 hits per year between 1951 and 1961, Minoso had just 19 hits in '62. He'd
retire (for the first time) after the 1964 season. if Minnie had been healthy and approached his normal numbers in '62 he'd have finished his career with about 2,100 hits, but with his injury-plagued '62 season his final hit total was just 1,963 (still excellent considering his late start in the majors due to the racial barrier).
Despite his sudden decline he's still my top choice for the Hall Of Fame in this coming December's
Veterans Committee Golden Era (1947-1972) election for the HOF Class of 2015.

Bobby Tiefenauer: Never Give Up Hope

To my knowledge, Bobby Tiefenauer has never showed up in a color image in the uniform of the New York Yankees. There's ample explanation for that.

Tiefenauer pitched for seven teams (one of them, the Cardinals, twice) over a 10-year career that spanned just 179 games. He was a knuckleball pitcher, brilliant in AAA and maddeningly erratic in the majors. 9-25 with 23 saves lifetime makes the length of his career seem improbable. But in '64 he had 13 of those saves, a 3.21 ERA, and 46 strikeouts and just 15 walks in 73 innings for the Braves.

The next spring he gave up eight hits and six earned runs in seven innings with Milwaukee, and was dished off to the Yankees on June 16th. He got saves in two of his first five appearances in New York. In his next five appearances he faced a total of 53 batters. 14 got hits, two were walked, one was hit, and he was tagged for five runs in 12-and-two-thirds.

The Yankees sent him to their AAA team in Toledo on July 7. He would bubble back up with the Indians in August.

So "Tief" was only in New York for about three weeks, and only the first 11 of those days were at home. It's no surprise there's no color shot of him.

Except there is.

You may have heard that Getty Images just "unlocked" thousands of its photos to stop fighting much internet use, so I've been combing the files pretty heavily. I just put "1957 Baseball" in the search engine and what popped up made my jaw drop. It's mislabeled as a photograph of the late great Jerry Coleman being interviewed before a game.

In fact, it's Coleman doing the interview - of Bobby Tiefenauer and catcher Elston Howard. And the watermark is over Howard. Just like that: a color photo of Bobby Tiefenauer with the Yankees. Not terrific, not big, but wonderful in its own right, and isolated below.
