William Lindsay
William Hudson "Red" Lindsay was a third baseman with the Philadelphia Bacharch Giants in 1934. The photo is from the seamheads.com website. This player should not be confused with Bill Lindsay (William no-middle-name Lindsay), who was an outfielder-pitcher of the 1909-14 period of the Negro Leagues.

Maurice Lisby
Maurice "Mo" Lisby was a pitcher for the Philadelphia Bacharach Giants and Newark Dodgers in 1934. He also made at least one appearance in show business, playing a role in a New York City production in 1946. The photo is from the New York Daily News of Sept. 20, 1975. He was born in 1912 and died in 1995, just a few days short of his 83rd birthday.

Charles England
Charles England was a pitcher who had a brief stint with the 1946 Newark Eagles. He started two games and lost them both. The photo is from the newly released SABR book on the 1946 Negro League World Series Champions Newark team, THE NEWARK EAGLES TAKE FLIGHT.
Although England's career in the Negro Leagues was fleeting, after baseball he became an honored teacher and coach. Today, there is an intermediate school and a foundation in his name in Lexington, NC. He is also in the Shaw University HOF. He died in 1999. |

Vernon Harrison
[ATTACH][ATTACH]This photo (on the left) of Vernon Harrison, like the one of Charles England above, comes from the SABR book,THE NEWARK EAGLES TAKE FLIGHT.
But the case of Vernon Harrison is a puzzling one. He had been on my missing players list as a one-game third baseman with the 1946 Newark Eagles. Despite his being in the book about the 1946 Newark Eagles team, the author of his biography in that book has concluded that he was not associated with Newark that year. The author, Margaret Gripshover, has concluded that the box score showing "Harrison" at 3rd base was published in error, and it should have read "Patterson," meaning Pat Patterson. But Vernon Harrison had been a pitcher for the Newark Eagles at an earlier time, in 1939, so he was a valid Negro Leagues player. The photo on the left shows him in his high school uniform. The school was Lincoln High School of Jersey City, NJ. The photo on the right is from seamheads.com. The uniform is unidentified. Last edited by Cusick; 07-23-2019 at 10:38 AM. Charles Parks
On 12/5/2014, I posted a photo of catcher Charles Parks in a Newark Eagles uniform, but this new SABR book provides us with a much better photo of him. Here it is.

John L. Gray
John L. Gray was a catcher with the 1959 Indianapolis Clowns. He is shown here in the uniform of the minor league Idaho Falls Russets of the Pioneer League.
This photo was posted by PinsonHOF in the OOTP Minor League thread, but since Gray appeared in the Negro Leagues during the 1950's, I wanted to carry it over to this thread as well. PinsonHOF had acquired it from the website klmitchell.com |

Sam Brison
Sam Brison was a shortstop and "clown prince" with the Indianapolis Clowns after having entered the Negro Leagues in 1958 with the Birmingham Black Barons. His career with the Clowns lasted for fifteen years as the Clowns became more and more of a barnstorming team.
The photo on the left is from the blog of Kevin L. Mitchell at thebaseballscroll.blogspot.com. The card on the right is a 1976 Laughlin Indianapolis Clowns issue. The card below the other two is from a set commemorating the movie "The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars." Brison was among the cast in that movie. Last edited by Cusick; 10-04-2019 at 09:31 AM. Claudio Manelo
Claudio "Claude" Manelo was a first baseman, pitcher, and outfielder with the Cuban Stars, New York Cuban Stars, Cincinnati Cubans, and All Cubans during the 1916-1924 period. This photo was for sale on Amazon.com in October, 2019. The uniform was not identified, but the photo was advertised as stemming from 1921. Manelo was known to have been with the Cuban Stars that year, so it's possible that it is a uniform from that team.

Wilson "Slack" Martin
Slack Martin was a true utility man, holding the following positions in the Negro Leagues: outfield, first base, pitcher, catcher, and third base. During the 4-year span of 1925-28, he was with the Indianapolis ABC's, Detroit Stars, Dayton Marcos, and Washington Potomacs. This photo is the only one I've found of him thus far, and it certainly provides little facial detail. It is from the Bakersfield Californian of March 18, 1946, and shows him with the San Francisco Sea Lions Afro-American baseball team.

Tat Mays
Tat Mays played one game at catcher for the 1937 St. Louis Stars. This photo appears on the following webpage:
https://agatetype.typepad.com/agate_...sea-lions.html There are a couple of interesting aspects about the accompanying article by Gary Ashwill. There is some conjecture that Tat Mays may be the father of Willie Mays, though it's difficult to prove the case because Willie can't recall his dad's playing baseball on the West Coast. While Gary Ashwill mentions the various amateur teams on which Tat Mays played, he omits the Negro League team, the St. Louis Stars. Yet Gary describes this Tat Mays as a pitcher/catcher/infielder and says that he also carried the nickname of "Peewee." According to Seamheads.com, the Negro League player was also known both as Tat and Peewee, and his real first name was Willie. It all seems like too much of a coincidence for it not to be the correct Tat Mays. The Seamheads.com record for Tat Mays is at: http://seamheads.com/NegroLgs/player...rID=mays-01tat The SABR BioProject biography for Willie Mays, which mentions his father, and cites his nickname as Cat (not Tat) Mays, is at: https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/64f5dfa2 Last edited by Cusick; 10-24-2019 at 12:49 PM.
