Cubs Fire Renteria
What do you think? Is this going to be one more of those "Curse" issues with the Cubs - firing a decent manager, that did a fair job in his single year with the team? Two weeks ago they gave him the confidence boost for next season.
Then as soon as Joe Maddon becomes available, it's: "Sorry, Rick...you got to go..." Is this the right thing to do, or is it classless? Here's the statement from Cubs brass: Cubs Fire Manager Rick Renteria | cubs.com Quote:

That's the $25M question. I'm firmly in the "less influence" camp with respect to managers but do recognize that some teams appear to overachieve with certain managers. Has Tampa Bay overachieved in the last 6 years? IMO no. He had a lot of good players and a superior player development group. Similar to quarterbacks, managers in baseball get too much credit and too much blame.
I like Maddon but have no clue how one can evaluate him. What I do know is that Rick Renteria is being tossed and Joe Maddon will get credit if and when the Cubs prospects actually produce. If they don't pan out Maddon may get fired but with 5-10-15 million owing what does he care. Renteria OTOH gets one year and can only get an "incomplete" on his report card.

Yes. On paper and based on track record. As MM said, it looks like an upgrade when you compare the numbers below - an experienced winning manager versus a rookie with one season under his belt.
Will Maddon win in Chicago? Who knows. Somebody MUST one day, no? No? Will Renteria be a great manager some day? Who knows. Maybe. Not if he continues to go 73-89 even if he was working with a crappy team. Because, here is the thing. Baseball is a business and like any other business, short-term results are paramount. Coaches and managers are the handiest short-term things to change in order to boost the bottom-line (wins and $$$), as much as you may disagree with that approach, as I do. Reputation is key in that regard; Maddon has built his and Renteria has not, yet. So the Cubs did indeed do the right thing by grabbing Maddon and Renteria was just in the wrong chair at the wrong time. Now, whether Maddon can actually get the Cubs to win is an entirely different matter in my opinion.

Joe Maddon might be an upgrade but unless the Scrubs get some decent players they will still suck for another 100 years. Yes they have some great prospects. Prospects. Unproven players that you do not yet know what they will do. Rizzo and Castro are their only proven players and Castro is too streaky. Baez might break the single season strikeout record next year. They need some veteran players with these youngsters. I still don't get why people think Theo & Jed Hoyer are saviors. Theo inherited a great team. Jed never won anything in San Diego and made some bad trades. Clayton Richard, anyone? The GM in Tampa drafted players that in some cases might have overachieved and they had one of the 2 best SP in baseball in Price & Shields. Maybe if the Cubs change their name they can win also.

When and if the Cubs lose draft picks over this I will laugh uncontrollably.

Apparently MLB was consulted before Maddon negotiated a contract. I think the Rays will have a tough time proving tampering based on MLB giving the go ahead.

1948 Bucky Harris
"Hey, it happens..." BTW, Harris also was a good manager for the low budget Senators in 1928 and was fired...they hired Walter Johnson. Double Whammy! Last edited by Carlton; 11-06-2014 at 10:12 AM. |

Some media sources who are very close to MLB and are usually right about their rumors are convinced by league sources that tampering did indeed take place and the Cubs more or less told Maddon that if he opted out of his contract they would sign him.
