Cubs Fire Renteria

What do you think? Is this going to be one more of those "Curse" issues with the Cubs - firing a decent manager, that did a fair job in his single year with the team? Two weeks ago they gave him the confidence boost for next season.

Then as soon as Joe Maddon becomes available, it's: "Sorry, Rick...you got to go..."

Is this the right thing to do, or is it classless?

Here's the statement from Cubs brass:

Cubs Fire Manager Rick Renteria | cubs.com

Quote:
Today we made the difficult decision to replace Rick Renteria as manager of the Chicago Cubs. On behalf of Tom Ricketts and Jed Hoyer, I thank Rick for his dedication and commitment, and for making the Cubs a better organization.

Rick's sterling reputation should only be enhanced by his season as Cubs manager. We challenged Rick to create an environment in which our young players could develop and thrive at the big league level, and he succeeded. Working with the youngest team in the league and an imperfect roster, Rick had the club playing hard and improving throughout the season. His passion, character, optimism and work ethic showed up every single day.

Rick deserved to come back for another season as Cubs manager, and we said as much when we announced that he would be returning in 2015. We met with Rick two weeks ago for a long end-of-season evaluation and discussed plans for next season. We praised Rick to the media and to our season ticket holders. These actions were made in good faith.

Last Thursday, we learned that Joe Maddon - who may be as well suited as anyone in the industry to manage the challenges that lie ahead of us - had become a free agent. We confirmed the news with Major League Baseball, and it became public knowledge the next day. We saw it as a unique opportunity and faced a clear dilemma: be loyal to Rick or be loyal to the organization. In this business of trying to win a world championship for the first time in 107 years, the organization has priority over any one individual. We decided to pursue Joe.

While there was no clear playbook for how to handle this type of situation, we knew we had to be transparent with Rick before engaging with Joe. Jed flew to San Diego last Friday and told Rick in person of our intention to talk to Joe about the managerial job. Subsequently, Jed and I provided updates to Rick via telephone and today informed him that we will indeed make a change.

We offered Rick a choice of other positions with the Cubs, but he is of course free to leave the organization and pursue opportunities elsewhere. Armed with the experience of a successful season and all the qualities that made him our choice a year ago, Rick will no doubt make an excellent major league manager when given his next chance.

Rick often said he was the beneficiary of the hard work of others who came before him. Now, in the young players he helped, we reap the benefits of his hard work as we move forward. He deserved better and we wish him nothing but the best.

We have clung to two important ideals during our three years in Chicago. The first is to always be loyal to our mission of building the Cubs into a championship organization that can sustain success. The second is to be transparent with our fans. As painful as the last week was at times, we believe we stayed true to these two ideals in handling a sensitive situation. To our fans: we hope you understand, and we appreciate your continued support of the Cubs.

If there is an upgrade at a position, I think you do it.

This was an upgrade at a position.

That's the $25M question. I'm firmly in the "less influence" camp with respect to managers but do recognize that some teams appear to overachieve with certain managers. Has Tampa Bay overachieved in the last 6 years? IMO no. He had a lot of good players and a superior player development group. Similar to quarterbacks, managers in baseball get too much credit and too much blame.

I like Maddon but have no clue how one can evaluate him. What I do know is that Rick Renteria is being tossed and Joe Maddon will get credit if and when the Cubs prospects actually produce. If they don't pan out Maddon may get fired but with 5-10-15 million owing what does he care. Renteria OTOH gets one year and can only get an "incomplete" on his report card.

Yes. On paper and based on track record. As MM said, it looks like an upgrade when you compare the numbers below - an experienced winning manager versus a rookie with one season under his belt.

Will Maddon win in Chicago? Who knows. Somebody MUST one day, no? No?

Will Renteria be a great manager some day? Who knows. Maybe. Not if he continues to go 73-89 even if he was working with a crappy team.

Because, here is the thing. Baseball is a business and like any other business, short-term results are paramount. Coaches and managers are the handiest short-term things to change in order to boost the bottom-line (wins and $$$), as much as you may disagree with that approach, as I do. Reputation is key in that regard; Maddon has built his and Renteria has not, yet.

So the Cubs did indeed do the right thing by grabbing Maddon and Renteria was just in the wrong chair at the wrong time. Now, whether Maddon can actually get the Cubs to win is an entirely different matter in my opinion.

Joe Maddon might be an upgrade but unless the Scrubs get some decent players they will still suck for another 100 years. Yes they have some great prospects. Prospects. Unproven players that you do not yet know what they will do. Rizzo and Castro are their only proven players and Castro is too streaky. Baez might break the single season strikeout record next year. They need some veteran players with these youngsters. I still don't get why people think Theo & Jed Hoyer are saviors. Theo inherited a great team. Jed never won anything in San Diego and made some bad trades. Clayton Richard, anyone? The GM in Tampa drafted players that in some cases might have overachieved and they had one of the 2 best SP in baseball in Price & Shields. Maybe if the Cubs change their name they can win also.

Well, it's official.

From the introductory press conference:

Quote:
—He (Maddon) ended the press conference portion by saying he's "got the drinks. Theo's said I got one round. That's a shot and a beer. That's the Hazelton Way."

When and if the Cubs lose draft picks over this I will laugh uncontrollably.

Apparently MLB was consulted before Maddon negotiated a contract. I think the Rays will have a tough time proving tampering based on MLB giving the go ahead.

1948 Bucky Harris

"Hey, it happens..."

BTW, Harris also was a good manager for the low budget Senators in 1928 and was fired...they hired Walter Johnson.

Double Whammy!

Now they're being investigated for tampering.

Some media sources who are very close to MLB and are usually right about their rumors are convinced by league sources that tampering did indeed take place and the Cubs more or less told Maddon that if he opted out of his contract they would sign him.
