When to sign newly drafted players?

What are the benefits of not signing a newly drafted player and instead waiting until closer to the signing deadline, typically about 2 years later? I'm in 1994-1995, if that helps.

Thanks

There could be a number of factors, but mainly, number of contracts. Your'e limited to 50 contracts total, and sometimes you want to see how a player develops before spending a contract slot. Those are a lot more precious than you'd think. Especially playing an historical game where the CPU seems to always leave a few good players on waivers...

Got it. So basically, the only reason to sign a player ASAP is if you want to play him right away?

That, or if you have really good coaches set to training, the player might get more significant boosts to his stats by being part of the organization right away.

I haven't ran enough tests on my own to tell you just how much of a difference, but I do know that I forgot to assign my assistant coach once after I signed him and players' development was down to a crawl with no one assigned to do the training.

There are a couple of other reasons as well. One, you might want an overseas player who isn't quite ready yet to play in your minor league team while he develops as opposed to overseas. Second, with Russians and some other Eastern European players, signing them as soon as you can prevents the player from signing in the KHL and therefore preventing you from signing them.

Those leagues are not in historical though, but it is true for a modern day league.
