I just finished the Pro Cup first-round predictions and was impressed with the Arlon Champions... they may give Midway more than they bargain for... it looks a very, very close series.

FIRST ROUND PICKS IN IPA PLAYOFFS
If you can believe the baseball experts around the Islands this is how this year's Pro Cup playoffs first-round series will play out on paper and in theory... the Ruthlandian Union Pro Cup favorite Volusia will nudge out the Wynnamac Sundowners in a hotly-contested seven-game series... and Valmara will get the best of the Crystal Lake Skippers, also in seven tense games... same story in the Tycobbian Union... the Midway Wolves will edge out the Arlon Champions in seven torrid games... and Southport gets the call over Luxora, ditto in a tough seven-game affair.

2058 Ruthlandian Union Division Championship Series (First Round)

V'S HURLERS GIVE THEM THE EDGE
The Volusia Vigilantes with a 105-49 record are loaded for bear this season with its overpowering pitching, led by starters record-setting Lonny Rinehart (31-6/1.96), Gustavo Clemente (11-4/2.46), Reynaldo Medrano (22-10/2.51) and Philip Duron (16-16/3.31) and backed up by a solid bullpen of closer Dan Hunt (2-2/1.44 ERA/31 saves/45 G) and #5 starter Cloyd Queen (15-6/3.79)... however, the V's only have average bats and this will give the Macs a chance to upset them... they are outgunned by the Sundowners at the plate... the V's skipper Tubby Tarkanian really needs his offense to step it up... he depending on Teddy Cornelius (.318 BA/20 HR/99 RBI/86 R/4 SB), Clement Belliveau (.285/14/59/70/10 SB), Kris Sheffield (.256/10/79/57/4 SB) and Carlos Silva (.307/10/52/78) to get his team enough runs to whip Wynnamac.

Wynnamac is a heck of a team with fine hitting, good power and strong pitching and a not too shabby 96-58 season mark... the Sundowners' staff is anchored by vets George Medworth (22-13/2.49) and Sammy Hayes (19-11/2.61), aided by impressive rookie Kuparr Bunji (21-11/3.19)... but they have had trouble in the #4 spot in the rotation... the Macs have a fine closer, too, in Tike Collazo (4-3/1.52 ERA/28 saves/44 G)... the Volusian pitchers have to shut down the Macs' attack, featuring Manny Sendejas (.291/34/119/109/8 SB), Snooky Bartels (.337/28/109/100/1 SB), Enos Benham (.379/24/93/100) and Marvin Hayes (.279/11/54/62)... Wynnamac has outhomered Volusia 152 to 112 this season and outscored them 794 to 690.

PREDICTION: VOLUSIA IN 7 GAMES OVER WYNNAMAC

2058 Ruthlandian Union Division Championship Series (First Round)

VIPERS TO BARELY BEAT SKIPPERS IN RU FIRST ROUND
Valmara (99-55) and Crystal Lake (89-65) are the number 2 and number 4-ranked clubs in the playoffs... both teams can put a lot of runs on the scoreboard, but the Vipers have the nod in the pitching department... starters Darus Grajek (22-9/3.39), Lukasz Chojnacki (18-10/3.38), Jozef Duczynski (12-4/2.72) and Tony Joe Carnes (10-5/3.14) give the Vipers the edge... the only concern manager Don Ritchie has is in his lackluster closer Kris Fourcade (5-6/3.51 ERA/28 saves/50 G).

Crystal Lake skipper Duncan Welch will try to get by with one excellent starter Merle Pitts (23-6/2.35)... a so-so one in Robin Norborne (21-11/4.32) and a couple of questionable ones in David Plant (6-6/3.96) and raw rookie David Wynne (0-0/3.86)... the bullpen is mediocre with Yuru Kirchoff (4-4/3.31 ERA/29 saves/49 G) in the closer role... the mound staff may be suspect, but there's no doubt that the Skippers can boom the baseball with the likes of Zippy Coburn (.320 BA/27 HR/103 RBI/91 R/7 SB), Mel Brouwer (.343/29/94/114/18 SB), Jasper Shackleford (.315/28/91/100) and Gib Conlan (.288/26/100/95/1 SB).

PREDICTION: VALMARA SNEAKS PAST SKIPPERS IN 7 GAMES

2058 Tycobbian Union Division Championship Series (First Round)

MIDDIES SLIGHT FAVORITE OVER TOUGH CHAMPS
In Tycobbian Union first-round play the Midway Wolves (92-62) are slightly favored over the Arlon Champions (93-61), mainly because of its two superstuds Norishige Ito and Daryl Vale... it's really tough to pick the winner... the series is really close... Ito (.334 BA/41 HR/112 RBI/120 R/7 SB), Vale (.330/33/117/96/25 SB) and Kax Clark (.297/8/67/102/2 SB) are the ones that make the Middies offense go... on the hill the Wolves are paced by Rob Land (18-4/2.90), Yank Atchley (17-14/3.45), Arnie McGill (15-19/3.83) and rookie Mel Merlo (15-12/3.46)... the bullpen is just average with closer Steve Swanwick (9-3/2.79 ERA/21 saves/46 G) and Will Deberry (9-4/3.64 ERA).

Arlon manager Mark Cameron has a solid ballclub with excellent offense and very good pitching, led at the plate by the trio of Jaimey Stansfield (.262 BA/44 HR/116 RBI/98 R/15 SB), Jon Cress (.327/25/80/67) and Art Catlin (.278/25/93/92/6 SB)... other run producers are Rebel Bryce (.324/17/54/52/2 SB), Zeppo Thiel (.279/16/58/66/13 SB) and Eduardo Garaza (.270/15/66/56/)... on the mound veteran starters Erik Branham (18-5/3.12), Dicky Towers (19-11/3.17), Ty Coffee (17-19/3.57) and J. C. Hilburn (8-5/3.63) stand out... plus longtime closer Mack Blair (4-2/2.23 ERA/24 saves/44 G) can still do the job in the bullpen.

PREDICTION: MIDWAY IN A VERY CLOSE 7 GAMES OVER ARLON

2058 Tycobbian Union Division Championship Series (First Round)

SUN SOX STAFF TOO GOOD FOR ZORROS

In the other Tycobbian match, Southport (95-58) gets the call over Luxora (89-65), but not by a whole lot... Sun Sox skipper Lorne Evans has the top staff in the TU with Jody Wales (23-10/3.15), Champ Shafer (19-12/3.31), rookie Jeff Moncriffe (17-15/3.04) and Lenny Clarkson (12-11/3.63)... and in the bullpen veteran Troy Hill (8-2/1.37 ERA/29 saves/45 G) has been lights out this season... Evans also has a club that tag the ball pretty well with Zee Graham (.326 BA/19 HR/66 RBI/69 R), Keiland Forrester (.302/24/81/79/4 SB), Walt Walmsley (.254/16/82/93/17 SB), Emmitt Waters (.286/19/54/45/5 SB) and Manuelo Garcia (.311/13/41/58).

Unheralded Luxora might surprise... manager Kent Halloran has a club that can belt the ball and he has pretty good starters... his problem is a lousy bullpen... the Zorros could do well if his starters Juliano Machado (22-8/3.36), Jimmy Hollis (16-11/3.21), Paolo De Freitas (15-13/3.42) and Wallace MacPherson (15-14/3.72) can keep him from going to his inept relief corps... closer Bartolo Baptista (2-5/3.60 ERA/31 saves/50 G) and his buddies have been inconsistent and undependable this year... the Z's batting order is chocked full of good hitters, sparked by Francisco Queiro (.316 BA/35 HR/100 RBI/91 R), Wade Tibbs (.323/28/95/95/2 SB), Marvin Harrelson (.289/25/77/103/13 SB), Vito Angeletti (.251/25/83/76/10 SB), Omar Solis (.290/21/64/61/2 SB) and Ryo Nijo (.280/18/66/58/4 SB)... Luxora can launch the ball on a regular basis... they clouted 210 out of the park during the regular season.

PREDICTION: SOUTHPORT IN 7 GAMES OVER LUXORA

ALL IPA OPENERS DECIDED BY ONE RUN
Forecasters have been predicting that all 8 teams in the IPA Pro Cup playoffs this season are fairly evenly matched... and at least for the first day of the first round, they were quite precise and accurate... all four opening games were decided by just one run.

AROUND THE TOWN IN THE IPA

LUXORA ZORROS

Owner: De la Vega Foundation
GM/Manager: Kent Halloran

Luxora is a picturesque town of 65,000 people of Spanish and Andorran ancestry located in the Silver Mountains of northeastern Tycobbia. English is the official language throughout Islandia, but both Spanish and English are spoken there. Snowy winters and mild summers lure tourists from all over, who come in great numbers to enjoy the natural hot thermal springs and spas, snow skiing, snowboarding, whitewater rafting and the wonderful duty-free bazaar overflowing with electronics, luxury goods and fine handmade clothing made from the famous Luxoran wool in the town textile factory. Everywhere in the area you will see a plethora of sheep ranches, along with timber, lumber and wood products which are processed and manufactured there. Luxora benefits greatly from its proximity to the Rio Loco, a wild and raging river and a source of great hydroelectric power. By way of a series of dams and locks the river flows from high in the mountains, skirting the town on its western journey through the foothills before finally flowing into the sky blue waters of Blue Lake near Fairfax. As a result, it is the headquarters of the Tycobbia Electric Authority.

Luxora itself is a modest town steeped in traditional ways. It has narrow streets and plazas in which to get happily lost among the grand and ancient churches and mansions. Because of the cultural tradition of “siestas”, Spanish-owned companies give their employees time off each day so they can attend the local team’s games with their families, a practice and custom that soon spread to all of the townships in baseball-crazed Tycobbia and Ruthlandia.

It is also the home of the Luxora Zorros (“foxes” in Spanish) of the Islandian Pro Alliance. The Z's are a member of the Tycobbian Union North Division. Luxora plays at De la Vega Stadium (affectionately called “The Foxhole” by the locals), named for Don Diego de la Vega, aka Zorro, the legendary black clad hero who helped the Luxorans fight oppression in the early years of Tycobbia. His descendants, wealthy landowners with huge sheep and Arabian horse farms, are the owners of the team. Of course, you can see Zorro atop his wondrous black stallion, Toronado (Spanish for “tornado”), galloping around the stadium to the cheers of the crowd as they rally the home team to victory. A splendid mariachi band serenades and provides a festive atmosphere at all the games. You can also enjoy the Spanish delicacies at the concessions stands: cunillo (succulent rabbit cooked in tomato sauce), escudello (a fantastic chicken, sausage and meatball stew), and fried ice cream, too. Traditional ballpark food is provided as well.

The first GM and manager of the Zorros was of Spanish descent. Rodrigo Alejandro, an outstanding power hitter and shortstop as an amateur, was the highest-paid “amateur” ever in company league circles. Many say Alejandro was the best home run hitter in the Islands history. As Luxora's manager Alejandro made the playoffs 10 times and won 7 pennants. The current skipper of the Z's is a former standout pitcher Kent Halloran, who was 258-206 in his 18-year stint with the club... Halloran posted a superb 2.69 ERA in his career and won the 2035 Tycobbian Union Golden Arm Award... he took over the reins of the Zorros in 2052.

AROUND THE TOWN IN THE IPA

CRYSTAL LAKE SKIPPERS

Owner: Flood Family Casino Enterprises
GM/Manager: Duncan Welch

Crystal Lake is the largest lake in Ruthlandia, situated in the southeastern corner of the country. The town, Crystal Lake, is located on a spit of land at the southwestern corner of the lake from which it got its name. Crystal Lake is south of Valka and just 25 miles across the lake. Belair Beach, San Dimas and Grand City are also close by. Crystal Lake is a polyglot town of 77,000 people who march to the beat of a different drummer.

Crystal Lake is best known for its liberal politics. Think of San Francisco in the United States for a comparable culture. Environmentalists, Jesus Freaks, Rock 'n' Roll enthusiasts in a fairly free society. Locals claim they are not liberal, they are libertarians. Critics counter that residents aren't libertarians, they are libertines. European tourists compare the town to Amsterdam, but not quite as notoriously liberal.

The lowlands around the town are more properly classified as bogs. Glacial activity 10,000 years ago scooped out what would become Crystal Lake and dumped quite a moraine when retreating, forming the land that was settled in the late 1800's. The area never really did grow population-wise because of the swampy terrain.

That's all changed. Crystal Lake was a planned town and came into being in the early 1920s when John William Flood began developing it. It was intended to be a summer resort getaway for the wealthy to escape the dog days of summer before the invention of air conditioning. It is laid out on a grid with north-south streets given names based on trees in alphabetical order (Aspen, Birch, Cedar...) and east-west streets given numbers (First, Second, Third...) and called avenues. Crystal Lake has always been a footloose and fun-loving town. in the 1920s, during the brief Ruthlandian prohibition experiment, they ran speakeasys and night clubs. In the 1950s, they built casinos. Present day Crystal Lake is a little Las Vegas.

Getting around Crystal Lake is pretty easy to do. The town was built around an electric traction trolley system that takes people everywhere. The town never adapted to the automobile, which is practically prohibited by ordinance today. It is a biker and walking society, that espouses pollution-free air, exercise and health.

The baseball team has been in business in some form for more than 100 years. The original team name was the Crushers. It comes from a 1921 letter from the team owner to his manager on his vision for building the club. John William Flood wrote to the first ballfield manager Andy Capson: "I don't like watching a bunch of dandies or young boys prancing around the basepaths like thieving fools. Bunting is for the birds. I want to see men crush the ball."

Hence, the Crushers were born.

John William Flood IV owns the team now. He changed the team name to Skippers in the 2050s. John William makes his money in the casino business and is rather indifferent about day-to-day baseball operations. Since he's getting up in age, he has been concerned about his legacy. He's been examining the Green Bay Packers business model closely and is seriously considering willing the club to the people of Crystal Lake.

The Floods have always been shady characters. John Williams Flood II was considered a scamp, regularly testing the will of the ABA commissioner in the days of the company leagues. John Williams Flood III was too busy developing real estate to break the rules like his ancestors did. The team has a somewhat unsavory reputation that is no longer deserved because of what happened several generations ago.

The famed Islandian slugger, Herman "Baby" George, the most prolific home run hitter in the annals of Islandian amateur leagues, was the first manager of the Crystal Lake Crushers. When it comes to hitting a baseball, Baby George is "Mr. Baseball" in the Islands. There has never been anyone quite like him. George was a bon vivant and literally in a class by himself. George began as a pitcher and was a very good one, but his hitting prowess soon converted him into a fulltime position player. He holds the all-time career homer mark in the industrial leagues. He turned out to be a pretty darn good manager, too. And the fans love him in Crystal Lake for his savoie-faire attitude.

George retired at age 90 in 2047 and turned the GM and managerial reins over to Duncan Welch, who starred for the Crushers from 2017 to 2029, helping them win 6 pennants and 2 Pro Cups (2020 and 2022). In 20 seasons Welch was a career 350-255 with a terrific 2.78 ERA. He was especially good in the postseason, compiling a superb 17-5 mark with a 2.50 ERA in 27 starts. Welch was elected to the Islandian Pro Alliance Hall of Fame in 2056.

The Crystal Lake Crushers amateur and industrial teams played in John William Flood Stadium in the 1920s. The name was shortened to JWF Stadium by the press and the public over the years. A new ballpark, Lakefront Stadium, was built in 1985 by the town council. Five years ago, the town fathers sold the naming rights to the famous entrepreneurial real estate developer, Trump Donaldson. This upset the baseball purists, but after a lengthy court battle, the court ruled against giving Donaldson the naming rights to the ballpark.

Lakefront Stadium is located right at the water's edge on Crystal Lake. Fans get a magnificent view of the lake. On game days, the best way to get to the ball park is by taking The Traction to the stadium or by sailing up to the marina.

The food is typical baseball fare that tries to cater to both tourists and to the whole Earth Day crowd. The hot dog is a foot-long kosher dog served on a dark brown wheat roll. The beers are local microbrews and all claim to be genetically-modified organism free. In his day Baby George was known to enjoy a lot of hot dogs and a few refreshing brews during the games.

Several elite teams are in danger in the IPA Pro Cup playoffs... overall Pro Cup favorite Volusia has been beaten twice in a row by the fifth choice Wynnamac Sundowners in Ruthlandian play, while over in Tycobbia, number seven Arlon has done the same thing to the number-three pick Midway... in other first-round action in the Tycobbian Union, number six Southport has won both games from underdog and eighth choice Luxora... and second-ranked Valmara and fourth-rated Crystal Lake stand deadlocked at one game each in the Ruthlandian Union.

AROUND THE TOWN IN THE IPA

VOLUSIA VIGILANTES

Owner: Tierra Wools Consolidated

President/GM: Joaquin De la Hoya
Manager: Tubby Tarkanian

Volusia is a town of 99,000 on the banks of the Silver River in the rugged foothills of the Silver Mountains in west central Ruthlandia. In the early years Volusia was a gold and silver mining community. It was first settled by Portuguese and English emigres, who after the gold ran out, became sheepherders and farmers. Now the area is known for fine woolen clothing and textiles. Timber and paper products are also produced.

The Portuguese settlers were some of the earliest baseball enthusiasts in Ruthlandia and they organized the third amateur team in the country. Marston was the first, followed by La Grange. Because of the cultural tradition of "siestas", the Spanish played their games during this time of day, usually from 3 pm to 7 pm. Commerce and business would shut down. This custom and practice soon spread to the rest of the Ruthlandian townships and eventually to Tycobbia. The "siesta" in the Islands has come to mean quality time with family... and baseball fits this perfectly.

Many Volusians are bilingual, speaking Portuguese and English. About 30% of the population have a Portuguese heritage. Volusia is a member of the IPA's Ruthlandian Union and plays in the North Division. It is the home of the Vigilantes, so named for the citizen-lawmen, who brought law and order to the lawless wild, wild west in the Gold Rush days. Officially the Vigilantes play at Silver River Stadium, overlooking the beautiful Silver River, but it is often referred to as "The Jailhouse" by the locals. Part of the old terracotta-colored jail can be seen in right field. The inmates get a good view of the V's games and "cheap" season tickets, too. The team is affectionately called "The Jailhouse Gang".

The lovely old ballpark, constructed in 1919, is located right across the street from the police station, which wraps around the stadium on one side. The massive live oak trees that still dominate the city park landscape were used many times in Volusia's early history for vigilante frontier justice. Over the beautiful brick arches and center field wall, the fans get a great view of the Silver River and the downtown area, just across the river from the stadium.

A wonderful Tex-Mex band provides great music during the games. The V's fans bring their sombreros and during the seventh inning stretch, they do a Mexican hat dance. Concessions are unique, too. Tantalizing tacos, fantastic flans (custard) and scruptious fried ice cream are among the culinary delicacies at Silver River Stadium. Frozen daiquiries and margaritas are house specialities. Hot dogs, cokes and beer are available, too.

The Volusia Vigilantes are owned by Tierra Wools, a farm cooperative for sheep owners, weavers and spinners to market their products. Joaquin De la Hoya is the president and general manager of the club with Tubby Tarkanian as the field manager. Tarkanian was a good defensive catcher and modest hitter... he played 16 seasons with the V's, retired in '54 and was made skipper in '55... Tarkanian batted .262 in his career with 166 roundtrippers and 800 RBIs

Volusia won the inaugural IPA Pro Cup in 2001, sweeping the Ginza Ninjas of the Tycobbian Union in four games. The Vigilantes had finished second in the regular season to the Far Mountain Redhawks in the Ruthlandian North Division... in the early years the Islandian Pro Alliance had wild card teams in the postseason... in 2007 they cut it back to just division winners in the Pro Cup playoffs. Too many wild cards were winning the title. Many felt that the fairest way was to reward a division champion that had proven themselves in the regular season.

AROUND THE TOWN IN THE IPA

Southport Sun Sox

Owner: Stage Productions
GM/Manager: Lorne Evans

Southport is located on Arvonian Island on its southeast tip. Arvonian Island, a tourist's treat, sits in the Southern Sea south of the main island and is separated from the mainland by Belair Bay. Cape Coral is on the island's north coast, Summerland on the northeast shore, Arroyo Grande on the southwest coast and San Alejo is in the mountainous interior.

Southport has a good natural port with beautiful white beaches and was settled by the British in the 1860s. They had first settled in Summerland, but thought that greater opportunities lay in the sparsely-populated southern part of the island.

Southport's population numbers about 75,000 fulltime residents, but is visited by many times that number of tourists from all over Tycobbia, Ruthlandia and recently by visitors from all over the world. The town got it start in 1870s when the "Father of Southport" Henry Banks built several hotels near the hot springs along with holiday cottages. Banks promoted Southport as "Heaven on Earth" and got the plant and factory owners on the mainland to send their workers there on holiday as a reward for their work. Banks arranged for cheap passage on ships to Southport as well. The growth intensified when he got the factory owners to close down for a week each year to service and repair the equipment. Banks got them to do it on different dates throughtout the year to insure a steady flow of tourists. As more and more industry developed in Tycobbia and Ruthlandia, the more Banks' tourist enterprise prospered and grew.

Southport's early growth and character was predicated on its pioneering use of electric power. In 1879 Banks created Southport Illuminations, lighting up the Promenade, the main downtown area, with 12 arc lamps. Banks called it "Artificial Sunshine". This was a year before Edison got the patent on the electric light bulb. Also as an attraction, Banks built was one of the world's first electric tramways running from Cocker Street to Dean Street on the Promenade. The tram has remained in continuous service to this day. Southport Illuminations has now grown to a three-mile stretch on the Promenade and lit up by 100,000 light bulbs. Tourists from all over Islandia and the world come to see the light spectacle. At Christmastime the Promenade is aglow with Christmas lights and decorations. It's a wondrous sight to see.

In 1912 Pleasure Beach, a world-class amusement park, was the brainchild of a town alderman, William George Bean. He wanted to create "a place where adults could feel like children again". It succeeded beyond his wildest dreams and is still a huge attraction today. The amusement park includes a baseball stadium, built in 1962 for the town's industrial leagues. It is named Pleasure Beach Ballpark and is run by Stageworks Productions, a company Bean's son-in-law, Leonard Thompson, established to run Pleasure Beach. You can see the beautiful blue waters of the Southern Sea beyond the outfield fences.

It was through Amanda Thompson, the daughter of Leonard Thompson and CEO of Stageworks, that the corporation ventured into professional baseball and obtained a franchise in the Islandian Pro Alliance. She thought it would be a great addition to Southport's tourist attractions, considering how much the Islands love baseball. That's how the Southport Sun Sox came into being.

The first skipper of the Southport Sun Sox was Charlie Oscar, one of the greatest all-around player ever, who starred as in the company leagues for over 25 years. Oscar was great with the glove and the bat. He could run, throw, field, hit for average and hit with power, a true 5-tool player. After leading the Sun Sox to their second Pro Cup title in 2047, Oscar retired and appointed a former Sun Sox superstar Lorne Evans as his replacement. Evans played in the IPA from 2025 to 2043, 9 years with Southport and then 10 with Tuckanarra. He was a 12-time All-Star, 4-time Tycobbian MVP, 5-time Golden Bat winner and twice was honored with a Golden Glove. Evans led his clubs to 7 pennants and one Pro Cup in his career. He was a lifetime .305 batter with 2928 hits, 701 homers, 1836 RBIs and 2045 runs. Evans is sixth in the IPA all-time in homers and ninth in runs scored... he is ranked 13th in RBIs.
