Rusty Priske - Future Hall of Famer

This is my new Dynasty... kind of.

I have created myself as a player. This is the first time I have done this... and I may have made 'me' too good.

We'll see.

Great defense, speed, and average hitter. No power. Shortstop. Maybe third base.

I am mostly tracking this for myself. Don't expect a lot of exciting features and reports in here.

Anyway... Priske was born in 1968 and was drafted out of High School, 1st overall, by the San Francisco Giants in the 1984 draft. He signed in early January 1985 for a signing bonus of $1.54M

Wow. Go me.

He was assigned to the Everett Giants of the Northwest League.

21-year old Lawrence Swanzy is listed as the starting SS. Priske is on the bench.

Priske is listed as the top prospect in the Giants organization, though he is still only 16.

I was not only invited to Spring Training (at 16 years old!) but I am playing SS and hitting lead-off in the Giants' first Spring Training game.

They are facing the Phillies. John Denny is pitching.

1st inning, 1st batter... Juan Samuel hit a single past me. No error but I think I should have had it.

My first at-bat is a fly out to RF.

In the 2nd I made his first defensive groundball play but the nerves were still apparent as it was a bit off line and 1Bman Mike Aldrete had to bail me out.

In the 3rd it got worse as I got another groundball which I threw off-line for my first error. That should have been the 3rd out but instead the bases were loaded. It lead to an unearned run for the Phillies and the Giants were now down 2-0.

I led off in the bottom of the inning, trying to make up for my blunder, but just grounded out to 1B.

4th inning... another ground ball, another error. This time I couldn't get the ball out of my glove.
No runs came of it this time.

5th inning, the first time I didn't lead off. Aldrete was on 2nd with one out. I flew out harmlessly to CF.

7th inning, caught a pop-up by Len Matuszek.

I am removed for pinch-hitter Brad Wellman.

The Giants lost to the Phillies 4-3.

Not an auspicious spring debut. I went 0 for 3 and made two errors.

Back in the line-up, leading off and playing SS. Facing the Braves. Jim Palmer is pitching.

1st inning. I struck out to start the game.

Later in the 1st, Mike Cole stole 2nd on John Rabb behind the plate. Nothing I could do.

3rd inning. With Rabb on 3rd I hit a double to right. My first spring hit and RBI.

5th inning. Up with Rabb on 3rd and Alejandro Sanchez on 1st and none out. I singled to right, scoring Rabb again! Then I stole 2nd for my first stolen base of the spring.

I tried to score from 2nd on a hit by Chris Brown, but I was thrown out by Reggie Jackson.

6th inning Scot Thompson pinch hit for me.

In the end the Giants lost to the Braves 7-6 in 11 innings.

I went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and a stolen base. Things are looking better!

I am playing again today... this time against the Padres.

1st inning... facing Andy Hawkins... kicked things off with a single!

But then Chris Brown hit a liner to John Kruk and I got doubled off. Disappointing but nothing I could have done.

2nd... I handled a ground ball from Alan Wiggins with no problems. I think it was early nerves that caused some defensive mishaps, but things are settling down now.

I am still really freaked out... a 16 year old playing along side major league players...

3rd... two out and nobody on... I grounded out to AL Newman, playing third base.

4th... turnabout is fair play as I caught a pop up from Newman.

6th... now facing Ed Wojna with one out and the bases empty... got a nice single into left. Then I stole 2nd and Terry Kennedy threw it into centre so I took 3rd. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it home.

8th... another routine ground out, this one by Terry Kennedy... routine is starting to feel, well, routine...

8th... I was pinch-hit for Mike Aldrete

The Padres held on to beat the Giants 1-0.

The Giants are not doing well so far this spring... but maybe that is why I am getting a chance.

I am having a hard time making friends on the team. The age difference is too dramatic. I am rooming with a pitcher named David Linton. He is 19 and has no experience above Rookie League.

So far I am 4 for 9, which is pretty great. One of those is a double and have 2 RBI and 2 stolen bases. I haven't crossed the plate myself yet.

I didn't play today and the Giants finally won a Spring Training game (4-3 over the Cardinals).

I hope these two things are not related.

March 9th, 1985

I am back at SS to face the Cubs.

1st inning... I hit into a routine groundout to 2B... and THEN, after we hit around, I flew out to RF. I made the 1st and 3rd outs int he inning. Not good.

2nd inning... I made a TERRIFIC catch on a liner of Joe Hicks' bat. Nice!

3rd... fielded a ground ball by Steve Engel with no problems... later I got Hicks again with a ground ball to finish the inning.

4th... Head's up play! I cut off a throw from the outfield and caught Steve Engel trying to go to 3rd on a throw to home. We conceded the run but ended the inning.

I grounded out to short with one out and empty bases.

6th inning I was pulled for pinch-hitter Ken Oberkfell.

We ended up winning 10-5, though my day was a little disappointing.

Nice defense though, so it was not all bad.

Leading off against the Astros today... but Mike Scott struck me out on 3 straight pitches.

2nd inning... I flied out to right.

I made another error. A throwing error after fielding a ground ball by Scott. Kind of embarrassing. Chris Brown made an error on the very next TWO plays and we combined to give the Astros THREE unearned runs.

In the 3rd I thought I should have got a double play, but I didn't make the turn.

4th inning... I flew out to centre field.

I got taken out on a potential double play by Jerry Mumphrey. Cost of doing business, I guess.

6th inning... I was pinch hit for by Keith Smith.

The Astros won 5-3.

This was not a very good game for me.

I didn't play today and... wow.

The Giants got blown out by the Mets, 14-3

March 12th, 1985

Starting against Lee Tunnell and the Pirates.

Chili Davis left the game in the 1st inning. He tore a ligament in his thumb and will miss the next two weeks of Spring Training. Painful, but it won't cost him. His spot is sewn up.

I led off the bottom of the 1st with a little single past Denny Gonzalez, the Pittsburgh second sacker. I stole 2nd on Tony Pena and then was the first runner to cross the plate on right fielder Mike Jones' 3-run homer! Mike was in for Chili so that was pretty big for him.

I came up with 2 out and nobody on in the 2nd and Lee Tunnel struck me out.

4th inning... I again failed to turn the double play properly. I came up with a big rep for my defense and thing are not working out that way for me so far.

I grounded out to Ozzie Smith in the 5th.

I started what would be a double play off the bat of Greg Gross but Joe Orsulak took out Brad Wellman.

It seemed a little dirty to me, but I am not here to cause trouble.

In the 7th I was pinch hit for by John Castino.

We won the game 9-2.

I was leading off against Jeff Russell pitching for the Reds. I lead off with a single to right. I then scored on a double by Chris Brown.

In the 3rd I grounded out to Russell on the mound... and then in the field I messed up a ground ball BY Russell. That is another error for me. Nick Esasky hit a 2-out homer so once again my gaffe led to unearned runs.

I bounced back in the 4th, making nice play on a grounder by Kal Daniels.

In the 5th I faced a new pitcher, Ted Power, and grounded out to short.

I fielded two grounders in the bottom of the 5th and another in the 6th without incident.

In the 7th I was pinch hit for by John Castino.

The Reds beat the Giants 4-2.

I wasn't in the game today against the Expos.

My roomie David Linton got the start. He did okay but we lost 5-4.

March 15th, 1985

I started against the Phillies with Marty Bystrom on the mound against us.

He struck me out to start things off.

I got back up in the 2nd and walked on four straight pitches. Bystrom was having control problems because I also moved up a bag on a wild pitch to Chris Brown, hitting behind me. That's as far as I got.

In the 4th Ernie Whitt hit a single past me. It was a legit hit, but my standards are pretty high. I should of had it.

Whitt ended up scoring. They scored 4 times that inning, though I did end it with a nice play on a grounder by Von Hayes.

I led off the 5th with another strike out, this time against Tony Ghelfi.

Len Matuszek hit an RBI single just past me. It feels like I am not getting it done today. Later Rob Deer and I teamed up to gun down Matuszek trying to score from 1st on a big hit by Jeff Stone. That was a nice play.

In the 7th I was pulled for pinch-hitter John Castino.

We lost 9-2.

I am not really happy about this game.

My stats so far: I am hitting .261 with a .292 OBP. I only have one XBH (a double) and I have knocked in 2 and scored twice. The three stolen bases is nice.

They keep starting me, though. Am I actually going to make my major league debut at 17 without a day in the minors?

I don't think I am ready, but the team is in pretty dire straights.

There are six shortstops on the Spring Roster. Brad Wellman has mostly been playing second. Fran Mullins has been getting the starts when I sit. The other three (Kevin Bates, John Stevenson, James Wasem) haven't been getting much playing time at all. Wellman and Mullins both have big league contracts with no options left. Ken Oberkfell and John Castino both have options at second base so I guess it could be me and Welly playing with Mullins as utility.

Wow. That would be something.

I have to start playing better, though.

Yesterday was an off-day. I did a lot (and I mean A LOT) of fielding drills.

Today we are in against Fernando Valenzuela and the Dodgers.

I led off the game with a weak little fly to right field.

I got up again in the 3rd with Scott Bradley at 1st and one out. I took a 1-0 fastball from Valenzuela into centre, moving Scotty up a bag. We both moved up on a ground out by Chris Brown, but were left there.

I made a good fielding play in the 4th, grabbing a ground ball off Darrell Evans. It was the first time I touched the ball all game.

In the 5th I was struck out by Jerry Reuss. Bad eye.

I was lifted for Brad Wellman in the 7th.

The Dodgers dropped us 4-0.

I didn't play today. We lost the Braves 3-2.

March 19th, 1985

I was back in the line-up, facing Charlie Lea and the Padres.

I grounded out the second to start things off.

I came up in the 3rd with two out and hit one through the infield to left for a single. I tried to steal but they had a read on me and put on the pitchout. I had no chance.

I also made my first defensive play that inning, throwing out Ozzie Guillen on ground ball. I later started a double play on Gerald DeSimone. Unfortunately, between that first out and the last, the Padres scored twice.

Terry Mulholland had a tough outing today, giving up four runs in four innings.

Mark Williamson struck me out in the 6th. It was on a bad ball. Not good.

In the 7th I handled a ground ball by Jose Gomez. Nothing fancy.

In the 8th George Hinshaw hit a slam off Mark Grant. It was especially tough because Rob Deer had dropped a fly ball earlier that might have made a difference.

We are having a tough spring.

Ken Oberkfell pinch hit for me in the 9th.

We lost 8-0.

This is a young, struggling team. That may make it easier for me to break in, but it is still hard on everyone.

I didn't play today but it was sure a crazy game to watch. We lost to the Cubs 14-11.

Most of the damage came after my roomie Dave was out of ht game, thankfully.

March 22nd, 1985

Guess what today is?

My 17th birthday.

We played Mike Flanagan and the Astros. I started and lead off.

I grounded out to Flanagan to start things off for us.

In the 2nd Eric Bullock hit a single past me. No error, but you know. In the 3rd I fielded a nice little grounder by Dickie Thon. That made me feel a little better but it was immediately followed by Doug DeCinces hitting one just out of my diving reach. We almost got a double play but I didn't throw to 1st on the end. I didn't think I could get Jose Cruz.

A lot of second-guessing myself today.

In the bottom of the 3rd I grounded out to lead off.

In the 4th I started off by fielding a grounder by Glenn Davis. I don't know what Colin Ward is doing today but we are getting a lot of ground balls. He is usually a fly ball pitcher. I got a couple more in the 5th - this time was Enos Cabell and Jim Pankovitis.

In the 5th I grounded out to Doug DeCinces. I haven't even gotten one out of the infield.

Alejandro Sanchez pinch-hit for me in the 7th.

We lost 5-3.

Not a great birthday present for me. 0 for 3 and I didn't make up for it with great defense.

The boys took me out last night to celebrate my birthday... that is, they tried to.

I got carded. I'm still only 17 after all.

Today we face Dwight Gooden and the Mets.

In the 1st he got me to fly out to right field.

I successfully fielded a ground ball by Rafael Santana in the 2nd and Mike Fitzgerald in the 3rd.

In the 4th I grounded out to second base. Gooden had gone all he way through our lineup without allowing a baserunner. John Rabb ended that this inning, but we still didn't score and were trailing 1-0.

In the 6th I came up with Scott Bradley on 2nd and one out, now facing Brent Gaff. I fared no better and grounded out to second again.

In the 7th I tool a throw from Bradley behind the dish to try and nail Michael Westbrook stealing, but it was no good. Scotty later nailed Westbrook getting greedy and also trying to steal 3rd.

In the 8th I ended an attempted New York rally by fielding a grounder by John Christensen and getting Kevin Mitchell going to second. Tight game. We were tied 1-1. In the bottom half I was pinch-hit for by Scot Thompson.

The game went to 10 innings... when the Mets unloaded on us and we lost 7-1.

The Giants have the worst Spring record in either league. We are 3-16.
