RIP Al Kaline

Quote:
Al Kaline, who in a long and unique Detroit Tigers lifetime grew from youthful batting champion to Hall of Famer to distinguished elder statesman, died Monday afternoon at his home in Bloomfield Hills. He was 85.

This sucks. I don't know if I ever heard a negative comment made about him. One of my fondest memories was going to the doubleheader in which they retired his number. As much as Detroit is known for Ernie announcing on the radio, if you're my age, you grew up with Al and George Kell doing the games on television. I can still hear both of them clear as day.

One of those stories that makes everyone say 'yeah right' - my mother-in-law, who is 94, was fresh out of teacher's college (Marymount) and teaching middle school in Baltimore - Kaline was a student in her first class.

No negative comments about him eh? So he's the Eugene Church of baseball, or Eugene is the Al Kaline of the forum then? Also, sorry for your loss. It sounds weird to say, but when someone forms the soundtrack of so many summers, it's crushing when they die. We went through it up here when Tom "Touch 'em all Joe!..." Cheek died at the end of the 2005 season. I was absolutely gutted, as were many Blue Jays' fans.
