Eastern League North

New York 4, Boston 3. The Heroes scored four runs over the last three innings, getting two RBI from Larry Walker to increase his league-leading figure to 110, to take the second game of the series and ensure they'll still have the division lead when the series concludes tomorrow. Dave Smith threw two innings of perfect relief to improve to 5-5 on the season, while Kirk McCaskill's strong effort (6 1/3, 1 run, 7 Ks) was wasted by the Riders who now will need help to win the division.

Western League South
San Antonio 2, Seattle 1. Jake Arrieta (15-11, 3.41) threw seven innings of one-run ball and back to back doubles by Joe Gordon and Matt Carpenter off Al Maul (2-3, 4.28) gave the Stallions a big win in Seattle.

Los Angeles 8, Omaha 3. Three Pioneers errors led to five unearned runs off Greg Maddux (10-10, 3.59) and the Lightning chipped away with 8 of 9 starters getting a hit on the game. Joe Adcock, batting .327 in September, stayed hot, driving in a pair.

  • Ty Cobb went 1-for-4 in Denver's 4-2 win over Phoenix and is now batting .411. He also drove in his 100th run of the season, his first time reaching the plateau. And the win also marked Denver's 100th victory, as they become the first franchise to post two 100-win seasons in ABL history, having set the alltime mark of 109 last season.
  • Oh yeah, Steve Carlton won his 20th game of the season for Denver as well to improve to 20-4 with a 3.71 ERA. He went 19-9 with a league leading 2.31 mark a year ago in taking home the Western League Outstanding Pitcher award.

Eastern League North

New York 6, Boston 1. The Heroes take 2 of 3 from Boston and cut the magic number to 1 as Brandon Morrow (3-2, 1.64 in 9 starts since being acquired from New Orleans) allowed one hit over 5 1/3 innings and Larry Walker drove in two more runs to raise his ABL-leading total to 112. Eddie Murray, who has hit .368 in September for the Riders, faced Dan Plesac with the bases loaded in the eighth but popped out to end the threat.

Western League South

San Antonio 4, Seattle 2. Josh Hamilton broke a 2-2 tie with an eighth-inning two-run homer, his 17th, and the Stallions put all the pressure on Los Angeles. Ted Simmons hit his 13th of the season and Roy Oswalt picked up his 15th victory. Mike Moore (10-11, 3.02) threw seven solid innings but, per usual, got little run support from the Grinders.

Omaha 1, Los Angeles 0 (10 innings). Vic Willis threw shutout ball into the 10th to earn his 11th victory, outdueling CC Sabathia (12-14, 3.09), who threw nine shutout innings for the Lightning in a devastating loss that drops them two games behind San Antonio with three games remaining. Omaha won its 90th game, second best in baseball, but will be watching the playoffs from home as Denver ran away with the North.

  • Ty Cobb went 5-for-5 in a 14-3 Denver drubbing of Phoenix, raising his average to a remarkable .415. The performance also included his 13th homer of the season.
  • Memphis' Al Bridwell went 1-for-3 while Boston's Sam Crawford went 0-for-3, and the two are now tied for the Eastern League batting crown at .338 (Crawford is percentage points ahead). Chicago's Jose Cardenal is at .337. Crawford is 6-for-38 since suffering a biceps strain on Sept. 12 that he is trying to play through due to the Riders' pennant race. But it may cost him the batting title.

Eastern League North

Memphis 5, New York 2. The Heroes fail to clinch the division on their own as Kevin Tapani (11-9) threw 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball for the Sounds, who scored five runs in the second inning against Nolan Ryan (2-2) in his first start back since going on the shelf with shoulder issues in May. Charley Jones hit his 10th homer for New York.

Orlando 4, Boston 3. The defending champion Orcas end Boston's playoff hopes with a three-run first inning giving a lead they would never relinquish. Guy Morton (6-5) overcame five walks to battle through five innings, allowing only one run for Orlando. Al Downing (13-11) settled in after the first, but Boston could do no more after Ray Lankford's 10th homer - a 2-run shot off Mike Henneman in the seventh - brought the Riders within one.

Western League South
Portland 4, San Antonio 2. Bernie Carbo (7) and Jose Reyes (6) each homered for the Robins, who got 6 1/3 solid innings out of Van Mungo (12-13). Smoky Joe Wood's rough season continued (10-16) and Jason Giambi's 20th homer of the season couldn't make up for it.

Los Angeles 7, Phoenix 2. Johnny Grubb's 7th inning pinch hit grand slam off Stephen Strasburg (11-9) broke a 2-2 tie and led the Lightning to back within a game of San Antonio for the division lead. A.J. Burnett went the distance for his 17th victory for Los Angeles.

  • Ty Cobb went 2-for-4 in Denver's 5-2 loss to Las Vegas and is now batting .416.
  • Chicago's Jose Cardenal went 2-for-4 to raise his average to .338, taking over the Eastern League batting race lead. Sam Crawford went 0-for-4 for Boston to fall to .336, and Memphis' Al Bridwell went 0-for-3 to fall to .335.

At the conclusion of this season I'm going to create an ABL Almanac Thread that will cover the league's history, leaders, team histories, etc.I did that for my old Pastime Baseball League and it was a lot of fun to put together!

Western League South

San Antonio 6, Portland 4. Yan Gomes hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to lift San Antonio past the Robins and put Los Angeles in a must-win situation. Jim Bunning (17-11) went the distance despite allowing homers to Jackie Robinson (25), Shoeless Joe Jackson (6) and Bill Madlock (9).

Phoenix 10, Los Angeles 2. The Lightning's playoff hopes end in brutal fashion, as Todd Helton's second-inning grand slam off Kevin Appier (11-12) was part of a six-run inning that took the starch out of Los Angeles' offense. Lance Lynn won his 10th for the Scorpions, allowing only one hit after Willie Mays' two-run homer in the first, his 19th.

  • Ty Cobb went 1-for-5 in Denver's 5-2 win over Las Vegas, and is now batting .414.
  • In the Eastern League batting race: Chicago's Jose Cardenal (1-for-4, .337) leads Boston's Sam Crawford (0-for-5, .333) and Memphis' Al Bridwell (0-for-5, .332)
  • Chicago's Lou Gehrig picked up his 100th RBI, reaching the plateau for the second time in his three-year career. He ended the 2021 campaign with 96.
  • Eppa Rixey allowed two runs over 8 1/3 innings in Chicago's 10-2 win over Louisville to clinch the Eastern League ERA title at 2.48.

ABL 2022 Postseason Matchups

New York Heroes (89-71) vs Orlando Orcas (94-66)

New York returns to the postseason for the first time since the ABL's inaugural 2018 campaign, and they hope for a different result as that season saw them eliminated in the Eastern League Championship Series by the eventual champion Memphis Sounds.

The Heroes led the Eastern League in homers with 164 and were tied for second in runs. But they are balanced, with their pitching staff ranking third and also ranking third in defensive efficiency.

Brandon Morrow posted a 1.64 ERA after being acquired from New Orleans at the trade deadline, and the return of Nolan Ryan from his shoulder injury in September could be key to the postseason. Dan Plesac (37 saves, 1.87 ERA) has become one of the league's elite closers.

Larry Walker led the entire ABL in RBIs with 112, but there are concerns the back issues that bothered him at the end of the season will linger into the playoffs. He'll need his supporting staff of Chief Wilson (.290, 22 HRs), Lance Berkman (.274, 20 HRs) and the super consistent Arky Vaughan (.316, four straight years over .300) to chip in as well.

The wild card for New York is Mike Schmidt, whose homer-or-nothing ways over his first two seasons have frustrated New York brass. If he's hot, it changes everything.

To knock off the defending champion Orlando Orcas, New York's going to have be on its game.

Pitching is the Orcas' calling card, as they allowed the fewest runs in the league (656) and both their starters (3.82) and relievers (2.92) led the league in ERA. Add the league's top-ranked defense and the Orcas do not beat themselves.

The loss of Eddie Ciccotte (12-7, 3.58) for the season hurts, but 15-game winners Wiley Piatt and the surprising Jeff Samardzija keep them formidable on the slab. Add the game's best closer, Dennis Eckersley (35 saves, 1.78) and New York's high-powered offense is going to need to come through with clutch hits to have a chance.

The Orcas' offense ranked only 8th in the league in runs, and the bottom is largely a black hole. But the heart of the order of Chipper Jones, Barry Bonds and Jeff Bagwell - each with a disappointing season this year - can carry a club when hot.

Bonds didn't quite make the leap in his sophomore season the Orcas expected, but he still draws a ton of walks, posted 20+ homers again, and plays a terrific left field, good for a 5.2 WAR that ranked fourth in the league.

The Orcas were the upset kings in last year's stunning postseason run past Louisville and then a heavily favored 112-win Denver squad in the ABL Championship Series.

But the feeling here in New York's fight to the finish in September will serve them well and they'll win a close but exciting series.

Prediction: New York in 7

Denver Pilots (102-58) vs San Antonio Stallions (86-74)

Who can stop Denver?

Remember, that question was asked last year, too. Then Orlando did it.

The Pilots haven't forgotten that, and they have had no problem saying they want an ABL Championship Series rematch this year.

Clearly, Denver's story has been Ty Cobb, who batted .414, shattering the ABL single-season mark of .373 he set last year, which broke Arky Vaughan's record of .363 set in 2019.

But Cobb - with his 101 RBI and 64 steals - is far from the only weapon in Denver's high powered offense. Tim Raines (.297), Joe Medwick (.325, 19 HRs, 92 RBI), George Springer (.263, 21 HR, 90 RBI) and Gary Carter (.344, 13 HRs in 99 games) all contribute to an offense that scored more than 5.5 runs per game.

They can pitch too. Steve Carlton (20-4, 3.71) is poised to win back-to-back Outstanding Pitcher awards despite an ERA more than a run higher than last year's campaign. Chief Bender (15-10, 3.31), last year's Outstanding Rookie Billy Pierce (17-9, 3.66) and Cole Hamels (15-10, 3.80 and 4-0, 2.06 in September) round out the rotation.

Add the two-headed beast of Tom Henke and Aroldis Chapman in the pen, and the Pilots are a tough out for anyone.

But San Antonio, many say, is playing with house money. A laughingstock of the league over their first two seasons when seemingly every move they made blew up in their face, they are here after their first division title.

Others, however, point out fairly that their house money season was last year, when they lost the division by a game. This is their time.

The offseason signing of Ed Delahanty (.313-16-101) was the move needed to get them over the top, as Mr. Consistency has been everything advertised. The Western League leaders in homers, San Antonio brings Jason Giambi (21), Jimmy Ryan (20) and Joe Gordon (19) as well as the unheralded Elmer Flick, who topped .300 again (.315, now .310 lifetime). So the vaunted Denver rotation will be tested.

Can Jake Arrieta (15-11, 3.41), Jim Bunning (17-11, 3.73) and Roy Oswalt (15-10, 3.87) match Denver's crew? Tough, but it's hardly a dramatic mismatch.

San Antonio prides itself on fundamentals. They boast the #2 defensive efficiency in the league, while the Pilots rank last. Can they force enough Denver mistakes, and take advantage of them, to possibly steal the series?

Not likely. Denver's on a mission here. They've won the division 4 of 5 years, and to have 2019 as their only championship would be tough to swallow, especially after back-to-back 100-win seasons. Look for Denver to make a statement.

Prediction: Denver in 5.

2022 Eastern League Championship Series Recap

New York Heroes (89-71) vs Orlando Orcas (94-66)

Game One
Each team mustered only four hits as both New York's Brandon Morrow (5 IP, 1 ER, 3H, 6K) and Orlando's Ken T. Johnson (8 2/3, 3 ER, 4H, 2K) were strong. Fortunately for New York, two of their hits were solo homers from Chief Wilson, the first breaking a 1-1 tie in the 7th, the second giving insurance in the ninth, as New York jumped out to the series lead.

New York 3, Orlando 1. (New York leads series 1-0)

Game Two
Orlando took a third-inning grand slam from Barry Bonds off David Palmer to forge a 6-run inning and never look back as they earned the split at home and will look to do some damage in New York. Jeff Samardzija allowed four runs over seven innings for the win for Orlando. Arky Vaughan reached base five times for New York, scoring three of their four runs in the defeat.

Orlando 8, New York 4. (Series tied 1-1)
Game Three
When Orlando scored twice in the top of the third, New York answered with a pair in the bottom half. When New York struck for two runs in the bottom of the fifth, Orlando answered with a pair in the top half of the sixth. But when New York struck for another pair in the bottom of the eighth, led by a Snuffy Stirnweiss tiebreaking RBI single, Orlando had no answer, as the Heroes regained the series advantage. RBI champion Larry Walker drove in three for New York and Dan Plesac saved his second of the series.

New York 6, Orlando 4. (New York leads series 2-1)
Game Four
Lance Berkman homered in the second off Joe Decker to give New York a 2-0 lead and the Heroes again answered each time Orlando struck - tit-for-tat with matching runs in the fourth and fifth to keep the Orcas from closing the gap. Bill Wight went 6 1/3, allowing two runs to outlast Decker (7 IP, 5 R, 4 ER) as the Heroes pushed the defending champions to the brink of elimination.

New York 5, Orlando 4. (New York leads series 3-1)
Game Five
Orlando's Ken Johnson gave a solid, if losing effort, in Game One. His effort here was anything but, as the Orcas came out with little fight as New York hung up a 7-spot in the opening frame. Larry Hisle has two hits, driving in three, and would be named the ELCS MVP, batting .356 with 6 RBI in the series. Brandon Morrow threw six innings of one-hit ball and Francisco Liriano and Melido Perez wrapped it up with only one more runner reaching base as the Orcas went meekly into the night, while the Heroes reached their first ABL Championship Series.

New York 12, Orlando 0. (New York wins series 4-1)

2022 Western League Championship Series Recap

Denver Pilots (102-58) vs San Antonio Stallions (86-74)

Game One
Denver's Steve Carlton went the distance and struck out 13. But Jake Arrieta dueled him, allowing one run over 7 innings, striking out 8, and Joe Gordon broke a 1-1 tie in the 7th with a two-run shot, followed by a Jason Giambi solo homer in the 8th as San Antonio drew first blood in the series.

San Antonio 4, Denver 1. (San Antonio leads series 1-0)
Game Two
The Stallions battered Chief Bender as Joe Gordon homered again and Jason Giambi hit two more shots to stake San Antonio to a 6-0 lead after two innings. Roy Oswalt allowed one hit and one run through six innings, but in the seventh Denver showed what made them the league's top team during the regular season. The Pilots blitzed Oswalt for three homers as part of a five-run inning that tied the game as Joe Medwick, Travis Jackson and Willie McCovey each went deep. The thriller ended somewhat anticlimactically, as the Stallions' Jim Beattie walked Tim Raines with the bases loaded to force in the winning run and give Denver a rousing comeback win to even the series. Andy Messersmith threw five innings of shutout relief to keep Denver in it.

Denver 7, San Antonio 6. (Series tied 1-1)
Game Three
If the big inning in Game Two seemed amazing, what occurred in Game Three put that to shame. With Denver's Billy Pierce and San Antonio's Jim Bunning locked in a tight 3-2 game entering the eighth, the Pilots quite simply went crazy - scoring 12 runs without the aid of a homer! Singles from Tim Raines and Jason Thompson opened the inning and ended Bunning's night. But Mike Timlin, Smoky Joe Wood and Dick Drago would be taken to the woodshed in a record-setting barrage. Eleven hits and 12 runs later - eight of those coming with two outs - and San Antonio saw itself on its way to a 2-1 series deficit after having been up 6-1 and nine outs away from a 2-0 series lead.

Denver 15, San Antonio 5. (Denver leads series 2-1)
Game Four
San Antonio manager Whitey Herzog considered bringing Jake Arrieta back on short rest. But ultimately, he left a pivotal game four in the hands of Jose Rosado against Cole Hamels. All Rosado did was throw 8 1/3 innings of two-run ball, both runs coming after the Stallions scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth for a 5-0 lead. San Antonio got homers from Elmer Flick, Ted Simmons and Matt Carpenter as they evened the series and halted the Denver steamroller.

San Antonio 5, Denver 2. (Series tied 2-2)
Game Five
The Stallions' Jake Arrieta left with back discomfort in the second inning and Denver feasted on San Antonio's bullpen, torching Dan Spillner, Smoky Joe Wood and Jim Beattie for nine runs while Steve Carlton allowed two runs over 6 1/3, striking out seven. Down 9-2 in the bottom of the eighth, San Antonio pulled a page out of Denver's playbook with a big inning, as Elmer Flick's three-run homer set the stage for a comeback effort. San Antonio plated five in the inning, tattooing J.J. Putz, but the two-run deficit was as close as they would get, as Denver would return home needing only one victory to advance to its second consecutive ABL Championship Series.

Denver 10, San Antonio 8. (Denver leads series 3-2)
Game Six
Chief Bender was torched in Game Two, while Roy Oswalt cruised until blowing up late. Here, Bender reversed fortunes with a strong effort, going 7 1/3, allowing three runs, walking none while striking out six. But Oswalt would bend again, but this time not break, allowing two runs over 7 before Gregg Holland and, in a shocking move, Smoky Joe Wood closed it out. Wood had posted an ERA near 8 over the last two months of the season and allowed five runs in three innings this postseason. But he struck out the side in the ninth to give the Stallions the win to even the series and force a Game 7! Joe Gordon hit his fourth homer of the series while Josh Hamilton hit his second. Travis Jackson homered for Denver, who also got three hits from Ty Cobb, who had been neutralized to this point in the series.

San Antonio 3, Denver 2. (Series tied 3-3)
Game Seven
Billy Pierce took the rubber for Denver, while Jim Bunning was on the hill for San Antonio. The game was scoreless until the fourth when, in the bottom half, Carlos Guillen struck an RBI triple to score Travis Jackson before Ty Cobb singled him home to give Denver a 2-0 lead. Bunning would allow one hit - a Cobb triple in the sixth - the rest of the way as he worked seven innings. And in the sixth, the Stallions gave him support. After an Elmer Flick single and a Jimmy Ryan walk bookended a Josh Hamilton popout to third, Jason Giambi crushed the first pitch from Pierce deep into the rightfield seats to give San Antonio a 3-2 lead and suck the light air of Denver right out of the ballpark. Cobb's aforementioned triple in the bottom half would go for naught, as Bunning retired Joe Medwick and Jason Thompson to preserve his newfound lead. Greg Holland, after a six-pitch eighth would be asked to record a six-out save. He opened the ninth by fanning Cobb, then Willie McCovey grounded the first pitch to second for out number two. Jason Thompson would whiff on a 2-2 slider to end the ballgame and send San Antonio to its first ABL Championship Series, while Denver could only watch a second-straight 100-win season yield nothing.

Jason Giambi earned series MVP honors, belting five homers and driving in 10 runs in the series.

San Antonio 3, Denver 2. (San Antonio wins series 4-3)

ABL Championship Series 2022
Preview

New York Heroes vs San Antonio Stallions

Remember when the San Antonio Stallions were the laughingstock of the ABL? The 124-196 mark of their first two seasons? Their first round pick in the inaugural draft (Kevin Mitchell) becoming a bust? The firing of Dick Howser after the first season only to see the team be 14 games WORSE the next season? The inexplicable drafting of Deacon White with the first overall pick in the amateur draft following that season when Lou Gehrig was theirs for the taking? (Note White has hit .226 with 53 games with the big club since being drafted).

All of that seems a memory now as the Stallions head to their first ABL Championship Series, knocking off a heavily favored Denver Pilots squad in seven games - and winning games six and seven IN Denver to do so!

San Antonio is a balanced squad playing good ball, and the big free agent splash of grabbing Ed Delahanty in the offseason has paid the exact dividends hoped for, as has the signing of Elmer Flick as a free agent a year prior.

But if you're arguing that destiny or fate are at hand here, consider that both Delahanty and ace Jake Arrieta are OUT for the ABL Championship Series with injuries suffered during the WLCS - a cruel blow given the impact of both men to the Stallions' success.

New York, of course, doesn't want to hear about that. They are in their first ABL Championship Series as well, only two years removed from a 64-96 season. Their order is deep and powerful, and while the bottom third has struggled much of the season, it didn't stop the Heroes from scoring the second most runs in the league.

Their staff is good enough if the offense is producing. They only pitched one bad game in the Orlando series, David Palmer's Game Two clunker. They allowed nine runs over their four wins. If they can replicate that against the Stallions, they should be OK.

San Antonio is missing their best all-around offensive player and their ace. That's a lot to ask them to overcome. It's hard to think they will.

Prediction: New York in 6

ABL Championship Series 2022
Recap

New York Heroes vs San Antonio Stallions

Game One
San Antonio sent Jose Rosado (14-11, 4.42) to the hill in the series opener, opting to get Roy Oswalt onto full rest for Game Two after the seven-game series against Denver. New York surprisingly opted for David Palmer (10-7, 3.43), despite Brandon Morrow being ready to go. Josh Hamilton made New York's decision look shaky when he hammered a two-run shot in the first inning to put the Stallions ahead. Palmer, though, would allow nothing else through his 5 1/3 innings of work. He left still trailing 2-0, but Rosado was producing out after out despite less than overpowering stuff. He'd walk no one and strike out only three. Chief Wilson, the 2021 EL Rookie of the Year, drove home Larry Walker in the sixth to trim it to 2-1, and then in the eighth got to Rosado in more dramatic fashion, belting a three-run homer to put New York up 4-2 before a raucous home crowd. Bill Henry and Dan Plesac combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Palmer, and New York grabbed hold of the series.

New York 4, San Antonio 2. (New York leads series 1-0)
Game Two
New York's bullpen puts up another terrific performance, as manager Bill Killefer gets 5 2/3 strong from Brandon Morrow, much as he did from David Palmer in Game One. Here, Morrow (10-10, 3.52) leaves with a 2-1 lead, locked in a duel with Roy Oswalt (15-10, 3.87). RBI singles from Mike Schmidt and Bill Lange in the fourth and sixth, respectively, accounted for the Heroes' runs, while Dick Bartell took Morrow deep in the third for the Stallions. But Gregg Olson (1 1/3) and Dan Plesac (2 IP) didn't allow a baserunner and Snuffy Stirnweiss' two-run double in the eighth off Jim Beattie gave New York some insurance as they take both games at home and a commanding 2-0 series lead.

New York 4, San Antonio 1. (New York leads series 2-0)

Game Three
The Heroes' Nolan Ryan (2-2, 4.08) struck out six through three innings New York's bullpen would be stellar again, allowing one run over 4 1/3 as Gregg Olson and Dave Smith were strong. But Ryan was upended in the fourth when walks and a three-run Joe Gordon homer led to a 4-run inning. That was all Jim Bunning would need as he would cruise after Larry Hisle's first inning RBI single. Bunning (17-11, 3.73) would allow one run on four hits over seven innings, striking out seven, and Greg Holland and Mike Timlin showed the Stallions' bullpen could perform as well, as San Antonio struck to bring some drama back to the series.

San Antonio 5, New York 1. (New York leads series 2-1)
Game Four
Neither New York's Bill Wight (14-11, 5.01) nor San Antonio's Smoky Joe Wood (10-16, a cringeworthy 6.20) had their stuff and it was 4-3 San Antonio after three innings. Chief Wilson took Wood deep in the third after San Antonio built a 4-0 lead over the first two innings, the big blow a Jimmy Ryan two-run shot in the first. Both would settle in, though, as Wight made it through six and Wood into the fifth before a high pitch count - the product of five walks - ended his night with the score still 4-3. But the Stallions would win this bullpen battle, as San Antonio got to Lindy McDaniel and Gregg Olson for five runs while their Dan Spillner and Greg Holland threw 4 1/3 of one-run ball as the Stallions tied the series. Elmer Flick drove in three in the win.

San Antonio 9, New York 4. (Series tied 2-2)
Game Five
Joe Gordon's third-inning error led to five unearned runs - including a Larry Hisle grand slam - against Roy Oswalt, back on short rest for the Stallions. But Gordon would more than make amends, belting a three-run homer off David Palmer in the seventh and a grand slam off Dan Plesac in the eighth as San Antonio came roaring back to complete a sweep of all three games at home. Elmer Flick hit a two-run homer in the fifth to begin the comeback, and after Jim Beattie was touched for a pair of runs, Dick Radatz and Mike Timlin shut the door to end the comeback attempt.

San Antonio 10, New York 7. (San Antonio leads series 3-2)
Game Six
The home team had won every game of the series to this point, and the New York faithful hoped that would hold true. San Antonio did all they could to make that happen: three errors, four unearned runs and a horrible pitching outing all the way around from Jose Rosado and the bullpen let New York strike at will. Mike Schmidt, Larry Walker and Charley Jones each homered for the Heroes, who built up a 7-0 lead behind Brandon Morrow (6 2/3, 1 ER, 6 K) en route to a cruise-control victory to force Game Seven! Joe Gordon had three hits for the Stallions in the loss.

New York 13, San Antonio 3. (Series tied 3-3)

Game Seven
San Antonio sent Jim Bunning to the hill against Nolan Ryan in the pivotal game of a back and forth series. The WLCS belonged to Jason Giambi, who stroked five homers and drove in 10. But he was invisible through the first six games here. Until today. With both Bunning and Ryan flying through the first two innings, Giambi changed that when he walloped a three-run shot off Ryan in the third after fouling off four pitches, giving the Stallions a 3-0 lead. Ryan's control issues were present again, and he'd allow only one other hit, but walk six and strike out six over 3 2/3 before being pulled. Mike Schmidt took Bunning deep in the bottom for the third for a solo shot to make it 3-1, but a double play scored a run in the fourth to negate that and led to Ryan's departure. RBI leader Larry Walker got to Bunning though in the bottom of the sixth for a two-run shot to make it a 4-3 game. Bunning left after seven, allowing three runs on five hits, fanning six. Greg Holland would come on for a six out save. Lindy McDaniel threw three sparkling innings of relief to allow New York a chance to draw close. But the red-hot Joe Gordon would come through again with an RBI single off Bill Henry in the top of the 8th for an insurance run for the Stallions, though Holland wouldn't need it. After getting through the eighth he fanned Geovany Soto, Mike Schmidt and Lance Berkman in succession to close out the game and the series, and give the San Antonio Stallions their first Alltime Baseball League championship!

San Antonio 5, New York 3. (San Antonio wins series 4-3)

Series MVP: Joe Gordon (10-for-25, 3 HRs, 11 RBI)

I've begun the process of generating the new draft class and will be back at this this week. Also, creating a new Almanac thread for the league in case anyone wants to get caught up without reading five years worth of recaps!

Wow, more than two months since I've touched this. Work and family took over for a bit. I've resumed work on the draft class and look forward to some time to get back into this.

Hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving!
