1995 NHL Regular Season

The 48 game, 3 and a half month schedule begins with Wayne Gretzky tying Gordie Howe in points with 1857. Gretzky is now 68 points behind Guy Lafleur for the all time lead. I wasn’t sure anyone would be passing Gordie Howe after he retired, but here we are, seeing Howe in third. Lets make this a big list…Here is a updated look at the top 40 scorers in NHL history!

Numbers 41 and 42, Bill Barber, and Dale Hunter, are the only other players to reach 1000. So that’s 42, 1000 points scorers in NHL history so far. Superstars like Maurice Richard, Milt Schmidt, Ted Lindsay, Toe Blake, Syl Apps, and Rick Middleton never got to 1000!

Another big milestone is reached early in the season. Dino Ciccarelli, of the Dallas Stars, has scored his 700th goal!! That’s a lot if your counting! Dino is the 4th player in NHL history to score 700. The top 3 are the first 3 in that list above this story. 700 is a pretty legendary number. Congrats to Dino!

700 goals!

As enter the middle of the season, the big surprise is how bad the Oilers are playing. I’ve been touting the Oilers as a team to watch for a few seasons now, and they have two straight great seasons. They sit at 6-11-2, out of a playoff spot so far. Brian Leetch hasn’t played a game this season, but is due back in a few weeks. Still, missing Leetch shouldn’t make them terrible. Renberg isn’t scoring, and Hextall isn’t stopping anything. In this short season, they don’t have anymore time to figure it out. It’s pretty much win now or miss the playoffs!

Renberg is having trouble repeating his breakout season.

We have reached the trade deadline of this short season, and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks do not have a win! They stand at 0-22-4!! They have just 35 goals scored in 26 games this year. Eric Lindros has 6 goals and 14 points, leading the team. His potential has fallen from 4.5 stars to 3.5. Maybe playing with no one has hurt his development. The Ducks need to find some more talent to play with their hopeful franchise player. They have no one at the moment.

Lindros is struggling, while his team is winless!

At the other end of the spectrum, the Winnipeg Jets have emerged with just 3 losses in their first 32 games!! The Jets are having financial issues, but it hasn’t effected the on ice product. Dominik Hasek is putting up numbers he haven’t seen since Terry Sawchuk retired. A 1.62 GAA with a .923 SP! Alex Mogilny has become a MVP candidate. The Jets are soaring into the playoffs with the leagues best record!

Hasek is stopping everything!

Anaheim wins!! The Mighty Ducks have finally won a game!! On April 7th, in their 34th game of the season, the Ducks score a season high 6 goals, and defeat the Stars 6-2! How about them Mighty Ducks!

Celebrate!!

On April 23rd, Wayne Gretzky scored three goals against the Pittsburgh Penguins. His 2nd goal tied Guy Lafleur’s points record, while his third, broke it!! Wayne Gretzky is now the all time leading scorer in NHL history!!!

The best!

Final Standings

Yep, right after praising the Jets, they go on a huge losing streak. They lose 10 of their last 13 games, and fall out of first place. I am the jinx. Unlike the Jets, the Oilers finished the season on fire, making their slow start a very distant memory and winning their division!

For the 2nd straight year, the Capitals miss the playoffs because of the new top 8 playoff format. Fourth place in the Atlantic hasn’t been good enough.

The Islanders win the president’s trophy again. Will they finally make a Stanley Cup final?

Anaheim goes 2-39-7, for a winning percentage of around 4 percent. Including ties, it’s around 11 percent. The 1976 Atlanta Flames went 7-61-12, which is a winning percentage of 8.75 percent. With ties included it, 16.25. So, with that information, I proclaim the 1995 Mighty Ducks of Anaheim as the worst team in NHL history!!

34 year old Wayne Gretzky had another amazing year. He keeps getting better. Gretzky was far and away the best player in the league this year. He put up a 84 game rating, which doesn’t really happen at his age. 79 points led the league by a lot.

In a trade I missed last year, 3rd overall pick Martin St. Louis was sent to Hartford. St. Louis just played his first NHL game at the end of the year and picked up 2 points. He’s on the roster for the playoffs, and is rated well enough that he could be difference maker to help Gretz and Mess get back to a cup!

After last year record setting season, Ray Bourque settles down with a pedestrian 38 point season. Now, ofcourse that’s still really good, but it’s nowhere close to 124 points!

1995 NHL Playoffs

Eastern Conference

The Habs took NY to seven games in last years second round. This year, those two meet in the first round, and it’s another close series, though as the series went on, NY’s superiority began to show. Islanders win in 6 games. Hartford again goes down in the playoffs without much of a fight. The 7th seeded Bruins have a relatively easy time, winning the series in 5. They get the Islanders next. That’s not good for the Bruins. NY looks great. They have no problems with Boston winning the 5th and final game of the series 7-2. Islanders return to the conference finals.

The Sabres had their best season since the late 70’s, and made the playoffs for the second straight season. They found themselves as favourites versus the playoff tested Devils. The experience difference showed. New Jersey was able to shut down Buffalo's offense in just about every game. In their losses, Buffalo scored just once. Devils takes the series in 5. With rumours swirling that the Nordiques will be leaving Quebec City soon, the fans hope a playoff run to the Stanley Cup would stop ownership from making that move. Step one is to beat the Flyers, which they accomplish in five! Step two will be to take out the Devils. Quebec and New Jersey split the first four games, but the Nordiques get big games from their veteran stars, Doug Gilmour and Cam Neely to win in 6. Hockey in Quebec will continue for another week atleast!

Western Conference

Detroit establishes itself as a number one seed and the defending champs by dismissing the Kings in a quick four game series. Mario Lemieux missed the series after suffering a late season injury. It was revealed after the series his season was over after a surgical procedure. The Winnipeg Jets had a horrible finish to the year, and are seen as a prime candidate to get upset. After winning the first 2 games of their series with the Blues, things fell apart. They stopped scoring goals, and lost 3 of the next 4. Dominik Hasek got hurt in game 6, meaning no matter how they do in game 7, his season is over. Goaltending didn’t matter in game 7. The Jets couldn’t score. St. Louis eliminates Winnipeg in 7! The Blues get no time to rest. They have to go to Detroit to play the first place Wings the next day. The fatigue showed, as Detroit led 3-0 after a period. The Blues would lose game one and two, but a home and home series developed. The home team would win each of the first 6 games, forcing a seventh! In game 7, the Blues bucked the trend. Denis Savard records 4 assists. St. Louis slaughters the Red Wings 8-2, ending their repeat attempt.

The battle of Alberta is renewed in the first round this year. The 7th seeded Flames gave all they could, extending the Oilers to 6 games, but I think that was their peak. Oilers advance. Dallas, the 4 speed, looks vastly superior to the Leafs in a 4/5 matchup, winning easily in 5 games. Edmonton starts their series with Dallas strong, but the Stars rebound to win three straight before the Oilers blow out Dallas in game 6 to force a seventh game at Northlands Coliseum. Tied at two in the third, Dino Cicarrelli scores the series winning goal late. Dallas advances to take on the Blues!

Eastern Conference Final

The Nordiques strike first. After falling down 1-0, they rebound with goals from Doug Gilmour and Jason York to take game one, 2-1. New York responds in game two. Mats Sundin gets 2 goals and 2 assits, while Jaromir Jagr and Pavel Bure each score. 4-1 Islanders tie the series.

A big game by Sundin ties the series.

Chris Pronger scores shorthanded in the first period of game three, which have the Islanders a 3-1 lead after a period. That goal was a backbreaker. You can’t allow shorthanded goals and expect to win!! The lead was extended to 4-1, which was too much for Quebec. 4-2 NY wins game three. This Nordiques team doesn’t quit though. Down 2-1 in game four, Mark Wotton, Cam Neely and Jason York score in the third. That’s three straight Quebec goals in the final 5 minutes, to win it 4-2!! Nordiques tie the series!

Pronger scores shorthanded in game three!

Riding the momentum of that comeback, game five is all Quebec. Darius Kasparaitis provides an unlikely source of offense, with 3 points, while Bob Essensa stops 33 shots. 5-0 Nordiques, who are heading home with a chance to clinch on home ice. Tied at one after a period, the Nordiques score three times in the 2nd period to take a 4-2 lead. The Islanders do not roll over with their season on the line though. Jonas Hoglund and Uwe Krupp each score in the opening minutes of the third to tie it. No more scoring occurs, and overtime is needed. They only need 3 minutes of extra time. Alex Selivanov scores the series winning goal for Quebec, upsetting the first place Islanders!! The Nordiques, on the verge of leaving, are going to the Stanley Cup final! 5-4 in OT!

Western Conference Final

Both Dallas and St. Louis get no rest after their 7 game victories. It’s St. Louis’ second straight 7 game series. Game one will be their 15th game in 27 days. Maybe they are fatigued, as after going up 1-0, St. Louis allows 4 straight Dallas goals. Trevor Linden gets 3 points in the Stars series opening 5-2 win. The Blues switch up the script in game two. They fall down 2-0, then score 4 straight in the 2nd period. Peter Bondra ends up with 3 points, including the winning goal. St. Louis ties the series with a 5-3 win.

Linden is big in Dallas' game one win!

Game three, tied at one in the third, sees the Stars score two quick goals in two minutes to open the period. After falling behind, St. Louis is held to just 5 shots in the frame. Not enough to mount any sort of comeback. 3-1 Stars win on home ice. Keith Jones scores 29 seconds into game four for the Blues. After that, the two teams combined for just 32 shots in a defensive war. No offense was able to get going. Jones goal holds up. 1-0 St. Louis ties the series.

Jones gets game 4's only goal!

The Blues continued to struggle to get any offense in game 5, but Dallas did not. The Stars pounded Blues goalie, Clint Malarchuk with 38 shots, and got three by him. Stars goalie Tommy Salo stopped all 16 St. Louis shots he saw. Dallas wins 3-0. St. Louis just can’t score! The way to win when you can’t score is defense, and St. Louis plays their best defensive game in the sixth contest. Dallas is held to 18 shots. Denis Savard does score for the Blues…Twice! His goals were enough. 3-1 St. Louis. The Blues force their third straight game seven!

Denis Savard scores twice in game 6!

The Blues 21st game of the Stanley Cup playoffs starts well. Keith Jones deflects a point shot in early, to take a 1-0 lead, but Dave Manson’s 5th ties it up just over a minute later. Benoit Brunet puts a rebound by Clint Malarchuk, making it 2-1 Dallas. Wally Schreiber scores 20 seconds later, tying it again. I thought this series was ruled by defense!! Before the period ends, Jeremy Roenick gets a wrist shot through Malarchuk. 3-2 Stars.

Bob Bassen and Steve Chaisson score 2 minutes apart early in the 2nd, snatching the lead back for St. Louis. The 2nd period ends by that 4-3 St. Louis score. The Blues add to their lead midway through the third thanks to Doug Weight. Keith Carney adds an empty net goal. St. Louis wins their third game seven!! 6-3 Blues.

These two teams have been fairly successful over the last decade. Each has two championships, and each, atleast I thought, were coming close to needing to rebuild soon. Well, here they are, looking for a third Cup. Quebec still runs through Doug Gilmour. Cam Neely, now 29, has lost some skill, but went through a career worst 6 goal season. He’s got more then that in the playoffs though. Grant Fuhr was the goalie for Quebec during the season, but Bob Essensa has played every playoff game. St. Louis have a lot of depth. They don’t score a whole lot of goals, but get production all over the lineup. They are missing Adam Oates, who regularly centers their top line. Oates was injured during the first round. I like Quebec here.

The day after St. Louis’ 3rd game seven win, they have to fly to Quebec and play game one of the Stanley Cup. Not only do they have to play 60 minutes, but the score is tied at two after those 60 minutes. Overtime decides game one. Amazingly, no scoring in the first overtime! They would need a second extra period, which ends 5 minutes in. Jason York scores for the Nordiques to take the opener 3-2! If there is accumulated fatigue in this game, and im not sure there is, St. Louis needs to be at zero! St. Louis plays game two like they are at zero. I’m gonna assume they just didn’t have much in the tank for this one. Quebec outshoots the Blues by 20. Paul Coffey gets 3 points. Quebec wins 4-0.

York wins game one for Quebec!

Quebec opens the scoring in game three. Zdeno Ciger followed his opening goal with another one and two assists. Quebec scores three goals in a 3 minute span in the third, rendering a mini comeback by St. Louis mute. 5-3 Nordiques win. St. Louis, down 3 games to nothing, takes a 2-1 lead into the third. To win this series, they will have to go 7 games for the fourth time. After Paul Coffey ties it, they would need to win an overtime game first. They can’t. Zdeno Ciger scores minutes into overtime, the Stanley cup winning goal! Quebec wins 3-2. They are the Champions!!

1995 NHL Offseason News and Notes

I forgot to save the skating, goaltending and playoff stats. Again, i think it's a terrible design that once i advance past July first, this stuff is gone
forever. Here is what i could access.

Wayne Gretzky wins his 7th Art Ross Trophy, and his 8th Hart Trophy as league MVP. That puts him one behind the 9 Hart's won by Marcel Dionne. 22 year old Sami Kapanen, after 3 years in the AHL, graduates to the NHL, and wins the rookie of the year, getting 31 points in his 40 games. Nick Lidstrom wins his first Pilote Trophy, and Doug Gilmour wins his 2nd Selke trophy, a decade after his first.

This is the first year the NHL Free agency preview has shown up in news. On July 1st, the free agent period begins. All players without a contract are free to sign with any team.

Anaheim’s Rejean Lemelin has retired at the age of 37. Lemelin spent 14 years in Hartford, including 1984, when he backstopped the Whalers to their only championship. He won 401 games wearing the Whale on his chest. His 418 wins are 8th in NHL history. Lemelin’s number 30 will be retired by Hartford. After spending two years in the minors, Reijo Ruotsalainen has retired, leaving a legacy as the one of the greatest King’s of all time. After being stolen from Boston, Reijo put up 913 points in 957 games. He had a career high 99 points in 1987 and won the Pilote trophy twice. The Kings will retire his number 10. Finally, Rangers long time goalie Pelle Lindbergh will have his number 1 retired, after a 16 year career in New York. Despite being a backup the last few years, Lindbergh won 409 games, and was in net the last time the Rangers won a title, in 1981. Lindbergh won the Gardiner trophy three times. He’s the Rangers franchise leader in shutouts.

After the season, the Nordiques Stanley Cup parade, their 3rd in the last 10 years, was also a goodbye to the city. Quebec ownership sold the team to a Denver group, which moved the franchise west. The Nordiques will now be known as the Colorado Avalanche. Hockey in Denver failed once before, with the Rockies. I wish in this reality, a team as successful as Quebec didn’t have to move, but, we are following NHL history here… So, goodbye to the Nordiques. You deserved better! Here is a look at the new Avalanche's identity, all the other new jersey's and logos, and some brand new 3rd jersey's which the NHL will debut this year.

There isn’t much of a free agent class this year. Three players are young guys, who either didn’t sign with the team that drafted them, or played out entry level contracts in the minors, and became free agents. No matter, there isn’t any impact players available this year. Here is what happened with the top players available.

Anaheim, the worst team in NHL history, gets the first pick in the draft, and does not screw it up. They take Zdeno Chara first overall. A big defenseman, whose got the potential to be a number one. Florida was happy to pick Jarome Iginla 2nd, and overall, it’s a much better draft then last year. Both Chara and Iginla would have been good picks for the Ducks. They need everything!

Legends of the game, Guy Lafleur and Marcel Dionne have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. There isn’t much to say about these two that I haven’t already said. Guy Lafleur held the all time scoring record until this past season. He broke Gordie Howe’s record. Marcel Dionne won a still standing record, nine Hart Trophies!! Both are legends.

1995-96 NHL Season Preview

Team Spotlight

The New York Islanders have had the promise of greatness for a few years now. They drafted several high end stars, who have entered the lineup in recent seasons. The team has lived up to the hype in the regular season, but have failed in the playoffs year after year. Lets take a look at their squad.

Maybe the Islanders problem is depth. They don't have a ton of depth. After their top 5, the pickings get slim. They don't match up well against good teams 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lines. That might put too much pressure on the big boys to beat good teams?

On the other side of the spectrum, the worst team in NHL history, the Mighty Ducks are back and looking to improve on their 2 win season. Here is a look at what makes them so bad.

Other then Eric Lindros, there is nothing there other teams would have to gameplan for. You attack Eric, and slow him down, you win. Lindros isn't getting any help, and it's hurt his development.

1995-96 NHL Regular Season

With Quebec moving to Colorado, the Avalanche have left the Northeast division and the eastern conference. They join the Pacific division in the Western Conference. Both conferences now have 13 teams.

What an incredible start to the season for Wayne Gretzky and the Hartford Whalers. On November 1st, Hartford is 9-0, allowing just 13 goals again. Gretzky has 10 goals and 17 assists, winning player of the month. Now I’m sure I jinxed both of them, but I’m very impressed.

Gretzky is playing some of the best hockey of his life!

Lets see how long the Whalers can extend this. They win back to back game’s with the Senators, followed by a mini tour of the Atlantic division. Another win over Ottawa is their 16th in a row! On November 19th, they finally lose.

Wayne Gretzky has broken the 2000 point barrier. Now that was obviously going to happen, I just have to point it out. He’s not stopping at 2000. I don’t know how long he will play, or how long he can play at a high level, but I’ve seen no signs of regression. He’s dominating the league right now like he did in his early 20’s!

2000 points!

Huge blow to the Oilers in early December. Brian Leetch ruptures a disk in his back, ending his season. Edmonton is a team that has the talent to win a cup, but haven’t reached the finals yet. Without Leetch, who had 19 points in 22 games, I don’t see it happening this year for them.

Leetch's season is over.

At Christmas, the Mighty Ducks has surpassed, and even tripled last years win total. They have 6 victories, in 40 games! That is improvement, even if they are still terrible. 18 year old top draft pick Zdeno Chara has played in every game, getting 18 mins a night. He’s got 7 points, 57 pim’s, and a -27 rating. He is putting up a 63 game rating though, so I think he’s doing well for a 18 year old.

18 year old defenseman are rare in the league!

Brett Hull has 46 goals in 45 games. Is this the year!! Hull scores against the Kings giving him 47. He gets two goals against Washington giving him 49 goals, with 3 games before the 50 mark. Against Hartford, on Jan 27th, Brett Hull scores 28 seconds into the third period. His 50th goal in his 48th game!! He did it!!! Brett Hull accomplishes one of the most difficult goal scoring feats possible!

50 in 50!

The Whalers are having an amazing season, and they just picked up a living legend.

35 year old Dino Ciccarelli joins the Whalers quest for a 2nd Stanley Cup. They playoff tested scorer just recorded his 1500th point earlier in the year. He had 28 points in 40 games with Dallas, which is a slower pace then he’s used to, but he is slowing down. It’s natural. Ciccarelli is 4th all time in goals, and 10th in points. He joins fellow top 10 point scorers Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier. 29 year old Shayne Corson has had his moments. He hit a career high 74 points in 1993. I’d describe him as a poor man’s Dino Ciccarelli. They play a similar game, and Corson is capable of scoring. He’s been a reliable 20 goal scorer. It’s probably a fair trade from a talent perspective.

Whalers making a move to help them in the spring!

After only getting 6 goals and 12 assists last year, it would be easy to assume Cam Neely was done. Well, it turns out that isn’t the case. Neely has rebounded this year with a strong 22 goals and 58 points through 60 games. He’s also got 200 PIM’s already, so he’s still playing that rough style of hockey. At 30, Cam isn’t done yet!

Neely is having a rebound season!

And I jinxed him. Right after I write that comes news that Cam tore his ulnar collateral ligament, and will miss the rest of the season. Sorry Cam, my fault.

Final Standings

Hartford wins a franchise record 64 games. After years of failed playoff runs, and not meeting expectations, is this the year they recapture glory?

Peter Forsberg and the Buffalo Sabres are looking for real. Last year wasn’t a fluke, and are now looking to take that next step in the playoffs.

Anaheim wins just 2 more games after the halfway mark. Eric Lindros had a good year, with 47 points in 67 games. Remember, he’s playing with nobody. His game ratings are good.

Can the Avalanche repeat real life history and win a title in their first season in Denver. They are the defending champions.

I didn’t see this coming. Brett Hull breaks the NHL record for goals in a season with 78! He passes Dave Andreychuk's mark of 77 set in 1986. Hull scored 4 times in his last 3 games to get there. Brett Hull’s 1995/96 season is without a doubt one of the greatest in NHL history!

Wayne Gretzky hits 60 goals for the 2nd time in his career, and gets to 150 points for the first time in 12 years! Who wins the Hart Trophy. Wayne or Brett?

Dino Ciccarelli gets 14 points in 32 games as a Whaler. He’s playing on the teams 3rd line and providing decent scoring for that role. Shayne Corson was disappointing in Dallas, getting just 9 points for the Stars.

1996 NHL Playoffs

Eastern Conference

The Bruins upset Hartford last season, but what a difference a year makes. Hartford perhaps shows how real they are this season, destroying the Bruins in 4 straight. The seventh seeded Flyers go up 3-0 in their series with New Jersey. After dropping two, Steve Yzerman gets 3 goals and 3 assists in Philly’s huge game 6 win to advance. The Flyers play the Whalers very tough in round two. 3 overtime’s and another 1 goal game, but Hartford gains the upper hand more then they don’t. The Whalers advance in five.

After dropping the first two, the Sabres win 4 straight to eliminate the Capitals and take a big step forward for this inexperienced group. The Islanders are officially owning the playoff bust label. Another year, another disappointment. Pittsburgh eliminates the Islanders in 6. NY looks like they need to find a way to add some depth. In the 2nd round, Pittsburgh scores 7 in game one, but gets shut down the rest of the way. Buffalo wins 4 of the next 5, to win the series in six! The Sabres advance to the third round for the first time!

Western Conference

Winnipeg has never been this good, or had this high a level of expectations. They come through in their first situation, looking like they can handle the pressure. The Jets sweep the Flames. St. Louis played 3 straight 7 game series a year ago before running out of gas in the finals. So, lets do it again. St. Louis beats the Oilers in seven!! It was evident after two games in their 2nd round series, the Blues were in a lot of trouble. The top seeded Jets had no problem scoring goals, and eliminates St. Louis in 5 to advance.

The defending champs gave their new city a taste of how good they can be. Colorado sweeps the Kings to advance. I missed that Mario Lemieux got hurt after 20 games this year. If Detroit stay around long enough, he could return. Step one is beating the Canucks. It’s a long 2 week, 7 game series, but the Red Wings do eventually survive. They got Colorado next. In a surprising result, Detroit sweeps the Avalanche. The Red Wings had just a tad more in the first three games, but blew out the Avs in the fourth and final game. Mario Lemieux still remains out, but could return in the third round.

Eastern Conference Finals

Rod Brindamour and Mark Recchi give Hartford the first lead of the series. Martin St. Louis gets his first of the playoffs goal midway through the third, clinching game one for the Whalers. 3-1 Hartford wins. Game two is a blood bath. Steve Thomas scores a hattrick and adds two assists. Wayne Gretzky and Victor Kozlov each finish with 4 points. Patrick Roy is chased from the game before the end of the first. 9-1 Hartford wins. The Sabres look overmatched.

Thomas has a big game two!

Buffalo needs a big effort in game three, and they come out with probably the greatest period in franchise history. Teemu Selanne,Vinny Damphouse and Jason Dawe score early for Buffalo. After Hartford responds with 2 of their own, Zigmund Palffy scores twice in the final minutes, leading to a 5-2 Sabres lead after one. Buffalo needed that badly, as they couldn’t hold it. Hartford scores three unanswered goals in the 2nd, tying the game, and leaving the Sabres thinking what do they have to do. Well, all they have to do is play the third, as Teemu Selanne gets the frame’s only goal. Buffalo wins 6-5. Rod Brindamour and Martin St. Louis hook up for 2 early goals in game four, while Wayne Gretzky adds a late marker giving the Whalers a 3-0 lead. The Sabres respond with 2 in the second, and a Ziggy Palfy goal early in the third to tie it!!! Comebacks!! With just over 3 minutes remaining, Wayne Gretzky finds Mark Recchi, who scores the winner. 4-3 Hartford.

Palffy is doing everything he can to help Buffalo win!

Back at home, the Whalers attempted to smother the Sabres into submission. They allow just 17 shots in game 5, while their top line contributed 3 goals. Wayne Gretzky, Mark Rechhi and Mark Messier combine for 7 points. Hartford advances with a 3-1 win.

Western Conference

No Mario Lemieux for game one. A close game, the Red Wings could have used the Magnificient one, as tied at 2, Kenny Jonsson gets a point shot through late, the winning goal for the Jets. 3-2 Winnipeg. Al MacInnis gets 4 points in game two, 3 of them on the PP. Winnipeg’s excellent power play helped them establish a first period lead they would never relinquish. The Jets take game two, 6-3.

4 points in game two for MacInnis!

No Lemieux for game three, that combined with Winnipeg’s three goal first period has the Joe Louis Arena unusually silent. Detroit is never really in this one. They score twice, but the Jets responded within minutes each time. 6-2 Winnipeg. Trailing 3-0 in the series, and 3-1 in game four, the Red Wings needed something to go right. Late in the third, Jozef Stumpel scores cutting the lead to one, then with the goalie pulled, Bobby Rouse finds his first playoff goal to tie it, forcing an overtime. In OT, it’s Sami Kapanen keeping the Wings alive, with a goal 7 minutes in. Big comeback for Detroit. They win 4-3!

Kapanen keeps Detroit alive!

The Jets dominated game 5. They want to finish this thing right now. With a 4-2 lead in the third, and controlling the play, another meltdown occurs. Mike Modano and Petr Nedved both score in the final 5 minutes for Detroit tying it! The comeback forces overtime. In OT, the two teams played for 13 more minutes. During that span, the Jets outshot Detroit 17-2. The onslaught ended up being too much for Wings goalie, John Vanbiesbrouck, who surrenders the winning goal to Vadim Sharifijanov. 5-4 Winnipeg. They go to the Stanley cup finals!

This is a matchup of probably the two best teams in the NHL this year. The stats show it, the records show it. It's not often this happens, which is cool. Both teams have financial issues, and are rumored to be moving to new cities very soon. This maybe the final stand for each franchise. Honestly, with how things have gone, teams like Edmonton, Buffalo and Washington are more likely relocation candidates then Quebec, Winnipeg, Minnesota and Hartford, but the game follows real life. So here we are...

Winnipeg’s Oleg Petrov opens the series scoring, but after Hartford tied it, the Whalers get two goals in the last 90 seconds of the frame. I always say it. Those goals are killer. Dino Ciccarelli adds a Hartford goal early in the third, rendering Winnipeg’s two late goals not enough. 4-3 Whalers win game one. The Jets open the scoring again in the 2nd game. Dale Hunter gets the goal. It remains that way until the opening moments of the third. Libor Zabransky makes it 2-0 Jets. Dominik Hasek would stop 29 shots, in his team’s 3-0 shut out victory. Series tied.

Hasek allows nothing in game two!

Alexander Mogilny gets his first finals goal early in the 2nd period of game three, tying the game. The Jets get the next two goals giving them a 3-1 lead. Halfway through the third, the Great One comes through. Wayne Gretzky scores twice in back to back shifts, tying it up, and forcing overtime. In OT, the teams trade chances but can’t score. A 2nd overtime is needed, and it results the same as the first. Nothing. Finally, in the third overtime, Rod Brind’Amour converts on a pass from Wayne Gretzky to win it. They needed 46 extra minutes, but the Whalers come out on top. 4-3 Hartford. Wayne Gretzky would continue to dominate in game four. He scores twice in the first period, and adds another in the third. The hat trick, plus an assist, make him the easy choice for first star. Hartford wins 4-1, putting them just a game away!

Gretzky is looking unstoppable!

Game 5 opens up with Rod Brind’Amour converting a Wayne Gretzky pass short handed to open the scoring. After another Brind’Amour goal, Wayne scores his 18th of the playoffs, making it 3-0 Hartford. The Jets finally get on the board at the 15:42 mark of the third, but Hartford only has to kill another 4 minutes. They do. 3-1 Whalers. They have won the Stanley Cup!

1996 NHL Offseason News and Notes

Here are last years skating leaders

Here are the goalie leaders

Here are the playoff leaders

Here is a look at the Islanders scoring leaders as requested

Wayne Gretzky wins 5 awards in addition to the Stanley Cup. Ray Bourque hit 100 points again, and takes home another Pilote Trophy.

Boston’s Neal Broten retires with a career total of 1480 points, 14th in NHL history, and the highest American scorer ever. Broten played 16 years, going over 100 points 7 times. He is the Bruins all time leader in goals, assists, and points. Boston will retire his number 14. 36 year old defenseman Doug Crossman has retired from the Dallas Stars. Crossman spent his whole career in that organization, scoring 20 goals twice, hitting 60 points three times, and part of two Stanley Cup championships. Dallas will retire his number 6 jersey. Kelly Kisio retires from St. Louis. Kisio scored 84 points as a rookie in 1983, and had 11 straight years with double digit goals and assists. A fan favourite in St. Louis, he won the 1983 Conn Smythe Trophy. The Blues will retire his number 7. Finally, New York Ranger Brad McCrimmon retires, and will have his number retired. McCrimmon played 17 seasons in NY. He had some wonderful years including a run of 9 straight 70+ game ratings. He won the 1983 Pilote trophy!

The Winnipeg Jets have been purchased by and Arizona group, and will be relocating to Phoenix. The team will be named the Coyotes. The Jets just made the Stanley Cup finals. This is the 2nd straight year a successful Canadian franchise has moved. Here is the new look for the Coyotes as well as the other changes around the league.

Scott Niedermayer is just destined not to be a Leaf!

Toronto trades their young number 1 defenseman to Washington for talented, just not first line talented center Stu Barnes. I don’t like this deal, as Niedermayer has been improving over his 3 years as a Leaf. He’s got a bright future ahead of him. At 22, Washington picks up a potential pillar on D. Barnes is a good player, but the price was high. He’s hit 50 points 3 times in his career, and should provide secondary scoring in Toronto.

Washington bound!

The top overall pick in the draft, Pavel Datsyuk, is heads and tails better then anyone else available. Infact, looking at who was selected, it screams average to me. Maybe even bad if you keep looking down. It’s not a good draft pool, but don’t tell that to the Ducks, who walk away with a potential super star!! Unfortunately for them, he’s just still a teenager.

Still no one really good available in free agency yet. The top players available this year are either long shot prospects, or 4th line guys. Here are the results.

The LA Kings did this….Pretty glad I'm not buying FHM 5!! Thats unacceptable.

Dennis Maruk and Gilbert Perreault have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Gilbert Perreault was the Vancouver Canucks. He did everything humanely possible during his 2 decades as a Canuck. He’s one of the most underrated players in this world! Dennis Maruk holds the single season scoring record. He had a small window in his career that might be unmatched. The rest of his resume is pretty good though….
