Columbus Has High Hopes For Hughie
Crushers make shortstop Jennings top pick in amateur draft
Weeks after locking up 15-game winner Chief Bender as the free agency period began, the Columbus Crushers addressed their lineup in the amateur draft, taking Hughie Jennings with the top overall pick.

Jennings, considered a gap hitter as well as a slick fielder, will immediately slot into new manager Chuck Tanner's lineup as the Crushers look to improve from a tumultuous first season that saw the expansion club post the worst record in ABL history (53-107) and fire manager Jerry Manuel after one season.

Columbus was reportedly torn between Jennings and five-tool centerfielder Mike Trout, who went second to a Seattle Grinders squad that batted .223 as a team in its inaugural season.

"With [George] Burns and [Enos] Slaughter in the outfield, we ultimately decided bolstering the infield was the way to go," said Columbus general manager Tim Allen. "We know Seattle got a great player in Mike."

The full first round is below:

ABL Around the Horn April 2023
  • In 2022, the St. Louis Steamers stepped up as the first of the four expansion clubs to make an impact, managing to break .500 (81-79) in their inaugural season. One month into 2023, it looks like the Seattle Grinders are next in line. Seattle went 15-11 in April, led by a staff sporting the league's best ERA (3.48) and strong starts from free agent pickup Roy Campanella (.311-7-18) and their latest first-round pick Mike Trout (.270-8-16).
  • Prognosticators thought the four-time division winning Denver Pilots would be in for a rough season after free agency took P Chief Bender (second in the Outstanding Pitcher voting), C Gary Carter (Silver Slugger) and 1B Jason Thompson and ABL alltime wins leader Cole Hamels was traded to Charlotte. Then came word P Billy Pierce would miss the 2023 season to undergo elbow surgery. But the Pilots have soared out of the gate, particularly offensively where Gabby Hartnett, acquired in the Hamels deal, has replaced Carter by batting .361 in the season's opening month, and the league batting leader is a Pilot outfielder NOT named Ty Cobb, as Joe Medwick is batting .377.
  • St. Louis achieved its surprising first season despite a poor effort from the No. 1 pick in the draft, Bryce Harper. The lefty slugger batted only .225 despite 20 homers, and had long droughts during the season. But he's started 2023 by showing he was worth the pick, posting a .964 OPS with 8 homers and 26 RBI in the season's opening month.
  • The free agent signing period was two days old when the first chip fell, and it was a huge one. The biggest contract of the offseason went to the player whose team wouldn't let him get away, as the Chicago Hitmen locked up MVP Mickey Mantle with a 7-year, $209.6 million deal. And Mantle has come out swinging to open 2023 for the first-place Hitmen, blasting an ABL-leading 13 homers in the season's opening month.

ABL Around the Horn May 2023
  • The Seattle Grinders are the league's top story through two months, as a 19-10 May has put them in first place in the Western League North with the second-best record in the ABL. They are being driven by pitching (league best 3.10 team ERA) and defense (league best .752 defensive efficiency), as Schoolboy Rowe continues his incredible start to 2023 after missing the entire 2022 season with a torn elbow ligament. It's hard to blame Charlotte for letting him go, having paid him $19 million for nothing last year, but Seattle - which inked him to a two-year, $20M deal this offseason - is being handsomely rewarded at the moment, as his 7-2, 1.37 start has led their unexpected charge.
  • The Chicago Hitmen have profited from a similar situation, where Nolan Ryan - whose 2022 campaign was limited to 10 starts due to a torn labrum - was allowed to leave by the New York Heroes, for whom he had an erratic four years. The promise was always there, but the 5 walks per 9 innings always seemed to derail Ryan's progress. Chicago has tapped into his potential though after signing him to a two-year, $14.8 million deal this offseason. Ryan has gone 7-0 with a 1.34 ERA, striking out 13 per nine innings and trimming his walk rate to 4 per 9 - less than ideal but manageable when opponents are missing as much as they are so far.
  • George Brett's all-star 2022 campaign was ended when he was struck in the face with a pitch, and ultimately needed surgery to repair the damage. There's now concern that Brett may not return to form, as he's struggled to a .261 mark so far this season. The panic, Brett says, is coming too quickly, and he's certain he'll return to top form shortly.
  • Jumping out in the Rookie of the Year race is a second-round pick: Bobby Bonds, of the Louisville Thoroughbreds. Bonds leads the Eastern League in homers (18) and RBI (48). Rookie Jim Edmonds, taken 8th overall by Phoenix, is doing the same in the Western League with 20 homers and 56 RBI.

West Gets Even in All-Star Duel
Phoenix's Youngs named MVP as Midsummer Classic record evens at 3-3

CHARLOTTE - Bank of America Ballpark saw the Alltime Baseball League's best gather for the 6th Annual All-Star Game, and were treated to a tale of two games.

Western League starter Schoolboy Rowe (8-5, 1.70) and Eastern League hurler Nolan Ryan (10-0, 1.57) each struggled through the game's first two innings, which saw the Eastern League ahead 3-2 on the strength of homers from Chicago's Jose Cardenal and St. Louis' Mike Scioscia.

But the West, who plated its pair in the second inning on RBI groundouts from Phoenix's Frank Chance and Orlando's Rafael Furcal after loading the bases against Ryan, would tag Columbus' Jake Westbrook for a pair in the third on RBI knocks from Portland's Bill Freehan and Phoenix's Ross Youngs.

Youngs would take home Most Valuable Player honors, going 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and what proved to be the game-winning RBI, as both sides' bats went cold from there on.

Portland's Jackie Robinson stroked an RBI single in the top of the ninth against Orlando closer Dennis Eckersley for an insurance run the West wouldn't need, as Seattle's Brandon Morrow closed it out.

Westbrook would be tagged with the loss, while Las Vegas lefty Johan Santana, the 2022 Rookie of the Year, earned the win with a perfect inning of work.

MVP: Ross Youngs, Phoenix (2-for-2, 2 runs, RBI)

ABL Around the Horn June 2023
  • The Sacramento Stingers didn't enjoy their June travels, going 2-11 on the road during the month en route to a 7-14 overall record that undid much of their strong start over the first two months. Sweeps at the hands of division rivals Portland and Omaha were not what the Stingers, now in the familiar position of fourth place - where they've finished each of the past three years - were counting on.

  • The Alabama Slammers were thought to have taken a big hit in free agency, losing the second most WAR in the league during the offseason. But their big investment in Shoeless Joe Jackson has paid off, to the tune of a .343 average, second in the Eastern League. But if you're looking for the reason the Slammers are atop the Eastern League South, the biggest may be a less heralded signing. Jerry Koosman, considered a disappointment until this season (45-46, 4.84 ERA), was signed as a minor league free agent and has blossomed at age 30, going 11-3 with a 2.78 ERA and earning his first All-Star appearance.

  • It seemed impossible to fathom that Ty Cobb could follow up his remarkable 2022 campaign in which he hit .414 with anything similar. But a .450 June has lifted Cobb's Western League-leading average to .377 and it seems a pretty good shot that the centerfielder will, at 25, win his third straight MVP Award.

  • What's most scary about the Chicago Hitmen? It's not their ABL best 52-37 mark, or the fact they have the likely Eastern League MVP in Mickey Mantle (.327-27-71) AND Outstanding Pitcher in Nolan Ryan (10-0, 1.57 ERA). It's that Lou Gehrig (.261-15-52) hasn't even hit a hot streak yet. The Hitmen already lead the North by 12 1/2 games and will likely be on cruise control come August.

I have my color barrier off, but still am having problem finding Negro League players. I want to do a project with Federal League allows colored players and the leagues merge.
