Releasing player after postseason, before free agency filing

A potential problem has been noticed in my online OOTP 16 league, and I was wondering if anyone else experienced this.

If a team releases a player after the postseason, but before free agency filings, and spreads out the payments, it seems the payments skip the current year and only start the next year, freeing up budget dur the current year.

So if I'm the Yankees and we just finished 2015, and I release Arod, his 20mil salary the 2016 gets pushed to 2017, freeing up 20mil for 2016.
It's something that's supposed to happen? Am I missing something?

I haven't seen that and I don't see it benefiting the team

Haven't looked out for it but if the team in question wants to add $20 MM in salary and deal with another $20 MM a year later, seems like it's their own bed.
