Can't make trades for players with a more expensive contract
Since the previous version of OOTP I haven't been able to make trades that result in my budget room being decreased. I have a positive amount and the trades don't put it in the negatives, but I still cannot make the trade unless it results in a gain or at least no change in my budget room.
Is this some bug, setting, or is there something about financials I just don't understand here? |

Are you playing with full coaches and scouting? If so they along with development may be eating most of your budget.
If you go into your financial page you can see your "amount available for free agents" and "amount available for extensions" Those also applies to trades as well. For this year the game will prorate the % of the season left. The game will then check to see if you can afford the player long term (if they have years remaining on their contract or are due arbitration), if both conditions are met it will allow the trade. Example being, at the halfway point of the season you wish to make a trade. You have 2 million "available for FA" and 5 million "available for extensions" The game would allow you to trade for up to 4 million in salary for this year and 5 million for any year after. Its very easy to mistake thinking you have a payroll of 60 million and a budget of 100 million that you should have 40 million left over, but thats not always the case |

I've seen cases in the trade screen where I try to trade with a team and it says, "LA cannot complete this trade as their budget will drop from 21M available to 19M available".
The 2 possible causes: 1. Bug in calculating available expenses 2. The deal will cause a future year budget to go outside of scope. So while you may have space in your budget this year, if the player you take on has a contract for next year (or is still arbitration eligible), then you may not have room in your future budget. |

As was noted in another thread, cash isn't taken into account for budget purposes in trades, it's the pre-cash budget room that matters.

Oops, between work and computer troubles I forgot about this thread.
Superstar and Habs seem to be correct though. While I have enough budget room on the trade screen I don't actually have a budget for free agency or extensions at all . Why does it not reflect that on the trade screen? It's pretty idiotic that it's giving me the wrong information / not enough information there. |

It is confusing - why the one section clearly shows budget room of 3M but you have zero FA$ avail. And that's not even counting the (apparently) untouchable 1M in cash....
As an accountant it is frustrating as hell not being able to drill down and see where these magical numbers are actually derived from gnnnnn |

Is there a salary cap involved?

Well that certainly influences things. The Player Salary Cap is your Payroll cap, not the individual player. I know, I know, it's been discussed. That may well be one source of your dilemma.

Man, that should be causing all sorts of problems in your league.

Yeah, I imagine it would explain quite a few strange things that I've noticed. Gonna put that to 0 and maybe switch a few other things and hopefully in time things'll become more normal.
I wonder how long it's been like this. Possibly for the whole 30 years this league has existed. |

I am curious, what does your free agent pool look like.
If things are working like I think they should be working, essentially nobody can sign a contract that isnt a minor league deal.
