What a great story! Greg Pryor looks like he'd be a fun guy to have some beers with.

That latest update of yours, what a roller coaster. You sweep the Red Sox at Fenway (there go their AL East hopes!) and then get swept at home by those damned Blue Jays. It's scary they can lose Dave Stieb and still be that good.

It seems you're gonna have to find a way to gain parity with the Jays if you want to get to the next level.

I've done three or four SIMS of 1986 -- once as the Royals, two or three as the Mets -- and OOTP always sticks it to the Red Sox. They never play as well in OOTP Sims as they did in real life.

Game 13 – April 21
2 – New York
1 – Royals
11 Innings

WP – Dave Righetti (1-1)
LP – Al Holland (0-1)
SV – Jeff Reardon (1)

The offense couldn't figure out starter Ron Guidry, but the Yankees couldn't figure out Bud Black. 1-1 tie into the 11th when Dave Winfield doubled and scored on a Dan Pasqua sac fly.

Hal McRae homered in the 5th, but a misdrag by myself replaced him in the 8th with Rule V selection Keith Thrower. Then, I forgot to replace Thrower, but he singled. Nothing came from it but Thrower's first major league hit.

Game 14 – April 22
3 – New York
2 – Royals

WP – Ed Whitson (3-0)
LP – Danny Jackson (2-1)
SV – Jeff Reardon (2)

Danny Jackson started the game with an 18 inning scoreless streak, but Rickey Henderson tripled and scored on a groundout.

We came up short again, leaving 9 on base after all Royals reached base at least once. Jackson gave up 3 runs in 8 innings, Whitson 2 runs in 7.

Orta and Cooper have been struggling but had 1 and 2 hits respectively.

Game 15 – April 23
2 – New York
11 – Royals

WP – Bret Saberhagen (1-3)
LP – Rick Reuschel (2-2)

Saberhagen had all the Yankees solved except for Dave Winfield who hit 2 solo home runs. But it didn't matter. All the Royals reached base and Frank White was the only to not get a hit. 5 multi-hit games, and Harold Baines hit a 3-run home run in the 8th to pile on. Cecil Cooper also added 3 RBI's.

Saberhagen struck out 9 en route to his first win of the season.

-
Still not a series win, but close on the games we lost. Good to get the Jays and the Yankees out of the way for a stretch. We don't face them again until the end of July.

Nolan Ryan tore his UCL and be out until next April, if he returns at all. He's 39, and probably not as resilient as his real life counterpart.

IRL wasn’t the winter of 85-86 one of the collusion years? I’m all but positive that 86-87 was. Anyway that’s probably why you don’t see Dave Stieb or Harold Baines on the market then the way they were in game. It’s hard to fault the Royals too much for not going after players when they were told not to... anyway, they also made probably the biggest splash signing of ‘86 when they signed Bo Jackson.

I know '86 - '87 was. There were over a dozen (? I think) players who weren't signed by their original teams, but who the other teams wouldn't sign. By league/union rules, they couldn't sign with their '86 team until May 1st. Boone, Raines, among others I believe.

Andre Dawson was an outlier who showed up to spring training with a blank contract for the Cubs.

Some in '85 - '86. Plus the teams played with a 24 man roster

Oh right, and another thing I meant to point out here is that in the 80s some teams used the *crap* out of their best relievers in a way that they don't anymore. For the Royals that was Dan Quisenberry and I can't help but wonder if you'd have been able to win a few more games if you leaned harder on his sidearm. In RL 1985 he pitched in 84 games for the Royals, literally more than half the games they played in, and threw 129 innings, so averaging almost an inning and a half per game.

So like, don't feel that you have to use the Quiz in the 9th to protect a lead like you'd use any closer. Use him from the 7th on, really, any time it's close, and don't feel that you necessarily need to give him a day off after throwing him more than an inning. If he's not tired, push him in there. Hell, even if he is tired, he's probably still better than most of the other relievers on your team.

Anyway, don't mean to second-guess your entire run or anything; the Royals were one of my favorite teams growing up (I grew up in Seattle so you kind of needed a backup to root for when the Mariners were inevitably out of the hunt by July) and Dan Quisenberry in turn was one of my favorite players.

I always go in with the intent of being aggressive with my stopper/closer, but always feel like I can get one more out from the starter or setup guy.

Quiz's stamina is a 2, but I wonder if it should be a 3. Scanning his 85/86 seasons, I see a few 3 inning outings, but I wonder if the game would let him go that long. I haven't tried!

Game 16 – April 25
3 – Boston
4 – Royals
12 Innings

WP – Steve Farr (1-0)
LP – Dana Kiecker (0-1)

Brett hit a 2-run home run in the 6th and Leibrandt tossed a solid 7 plus innings, so with the top of the order coming up and a slight 1 run lead, I brought Quisenberry in. He allowed a single to Mike Greenwell, and a then one of sinkers got away and Jody Reed scored to tie the game.

It remained a 2-2 tie into the 12th inning. Quisenberry tossed 2 shutout innings, and Farr had completed 1 shutout inning. Steve Lyons struck out, but reached first in the 12th on a passed ball. He advanced to second on a Mike Easler single and stole third. Geno Petralli tapped a fastball towards first and reached for a 2-out infield hit, scoring Lyons and giving the Sox a 3-2 lead.

Then in the bottom of the frame, 4 singles, a walk, and a couple flyouts came out to 2 runs and a win. Keith Thrower and Frank White scored; Wilson and Baines had the RBI's.

Brett went 4-6 with his 2 RBI's. Sundberg and Baines each had 2 hits.

Game 17 – April 26
5 – Boston
1 – Royals

WP – Bob Ojeda (2-1)
LP – Bud Black (1-2)

Ojeda had our number and we couldn't muster an ounce of offense until George Brett hit a solo home run in the 9th. It's the Sox' first win against us in 5 games this season.

Black was a touch inconsistent, giving up 4 runs in 5 innings. Bankhead gave up 1 in 4 innings of relief.

Game 18 – April 27
2 – Boston
3 – Royals

WP – Danny Jackson (3-1)
LP – Dave Stieb (1-3)
SV – Dan Quisenberry (1)

Jackson rolled until the 8th, walking 4 and striking out 6. The Sox had 9 hits but they stranded 8 and were victims of 2 Royal strike outs.

Alan Trammell committed his third error, but extended his hitting streak to 12 games, and put us up for good in the 5th with his first home run as a Royal.

-
Pete Rose announced his retirement. He's 7 for 16, mostly as a pinch hitter, with 2 RBI's.

In 13 of 18 games our starters have filed quality starts. They have 4 complete games and 2 shutouts, both by Jackson.

Game 19 – April 30
13 – Royals
5 – Detroit
10 Innings

WP – Dan Quisenberry (1-0)
LP – Bob Stanley (1-1)

Crazy 10th inning to say the least. We traded runs and the lead a few times in the 6th, 7th and the 9th. We took the lead in the 9th as Wilson and Trammell, playing in his first game against his old team, scored on Brett and Cooper singles.

But after Quiz got the first out in the 9th, he gave up three consecutive singles and the Tigers tied the game at 5.

But in the top of the 10th, we took advantage of 2 Tiger errors. 2 doubles, 3 singles, and a walk all lead to a Hal McRae 3-run home run. 12 batters came to the plate and 8 scored.

Quiz started the bottom of the 10th with a comfortable lead, but I pulled him for Farr after two consecutive singles.

Brett finished the game with 5 hits. Cooper had 4 RBI's. Saberhagen started and gave up 4 runs in 7 innings.

Game 20 – April 30
1 – Royals
10 – Detroit

WP – Mario Soto (5-0)
LP – Charlie Leibrandt (1-3)

It was the Tigers' turn to run up 8 in an inning, this time the 4th. All 10 runs were charged to Leibrandt, who gave up 2 home runs among 10 hits.

Mario Soto signed a 6-year deal in the offseason for $1.2m a year. He leads the Majors in wins and took home the April American League Pitcher of the Month award.

-
Alan Trammell went 3-7 against his old team and extended his current hitting streak to 14 games. He scored 2 runs and collected an RBI.

George Brett was 7-10 against the Tigers and improved his BA to .376.

Hal McRae has 3 home runs and is tied with Brett and Baines for the team lead. He's also started only 5 games.

Melido Perez won the American Association's Pitcher of the Month Award. He's 4-1 for AAA Omaha with a 1.49 ERA. He's struck out 33 in 42 innings. Perez turns 21 next February.

Through the first month of the season there are 9 teams playing over .600 ball in both leagues.

Game 21 – May 2
7 – Baltimore
8 – Royals

WP – Al Holland (1-1)
LP – Pete Vuckovich (0-2)
SV – Dan Quisenberry (2)

We snuck away with this one. The Orioles had a 2-run lead in the 4th when Harold Baines hit his 4th home run of the year to tie the game. Then the 6th started a string of 6 lead changes until Quiz held the Orioles in the 9th for the win.

Brett was 4-5 with 3 runs and 3 RBI's. He hit his 4th home run in the 7th. He also snagged the game winning RBI with a single in the 8th that plated Dave Collins.

Bud Black gave up 5 runs in 7 innings, including 2 home runs to Eddie Murray and Larry Sheets.

The outcome could have been worse, we turned 4 double plays in the game.

Game 22 – May 3
0 – Baltimore
4 – Royals

WP – Danny Jackson (4-1)
LP – Mike Boddicker (2-3)

Probably one of the best pitching performances I've had with this team. Jackson gave up 4 hits over 9, walking 2. He struck out 12 Orioles, setting the Royal team record.

My two big additions started the game off with solo home runs, Baines his 5th, and Trammell his 2nd. Trammell also extended his hit streak to 16.

Jackson's ERA sits at 1.05, and he's tossed 3 shutouts so far this season.

In the fifth, Cooper collected his 2000th hit, a single to right.

Game 23 – May 4
4 – Baltimore
0 – Royals

WP – Tom Seaver (2-2)
LP – Bret Saberhagen (1-4)

Tom Terrific pitched like it was the 70s again (except for the strikeouts). 6 hits, 2 walks, and 1 strikeout for his 64th career shutout. He has 1 in each of his 20 seasons except for 1982.

Brett and Pat Sheridan (DH sub) each had 2 hits, but we couldn't string anything together. Saberhagen struck out 8 in 8 innings

-
David Cone is gone for the season with a partially torn UCL. He was 2-1 with an ERA of 3.51 in 5 starts.

Mark Gubicza, out with a strained hamstring since the end of spring training, will be out now for an indefinite amount of time. Hopefully sooner than later.

Alan Ashby wants to be part of the starting lineup. He's 0-12 with 4 strikeouts. Sundberg is only hitting .195 with 5 RBI's.

George Brett was the AL Player of the Week. He went 14-22 with 1 HR and 6 RBI's. On the year he's eeked over the .400 mark.

Game 24 – May 5
8 – Royals
5 – Cleveland

WP – Charlie Leibrandt (2-3)
LP – Greg LaFever (1-4)
SV – Dan Quisenberry (3)

Two 2-run home runs powered our 8 run outing. A 4th inning shot by Frank White, and a 7th inning shot by Cecil Cooper. Cooper was 4-5 with 3 RBI's total.

Leibrandt gave up 3 over 7. Steve Farr gave up a 2-run homer to Andre Thornton in the 8th, and Quisenberry got the final 4 outs for his 3rd save.

2 minor injuries – Wilson left with a mild hamstring strain, he's day to day for a week or two, and Quisenberry strained his hammy on the last pitch. His injury is of a lesser grade strain, and shouldn't affect his pitching.

Game 25 – May 6
13 – Royals
1 – Cleveland

WP – Scott Bankhead (1-2)
LP – Roy Smith (1-2)

Bankhead pitched a great game atop a great offensive showing. 9K's and 1 run in 8 innings. Farr pitched a perfect 9th.

Every Royal who came to the plate collected a hit, including Al Cowens who pinch hit/DH'd for Jorge Orta in the 9th. Orta was 3-4 with 2 RBI's; Baines was 3-6 with 3 RBI's.

Collins hit his first home run of the year, and we totaled 5 doubles among our 15 hits.

Game 26 – May 7
10 – Royals
3 – Cleveland

WP – Bud Black (2-2)
LP – Neal Heaton (1-4)

The Indians are 6-21 and show it. Trammell went 4-5; McRae was 4-5 with 2 RBI's. Frank White hit 2 2-run home runs. Every starter had a hit for the 2nd straight game.

Lefties Tony Ferreira and Frank DiPino pitched the final 2 innings, giving up only 1 hit against all righties.

-
Bob McClure, a Royal last year who I used as a LOOGY specialist leads the American League in saves with 9. The Mariner signed for $154k this offseason has a record of 0-3 with an 5.84 ERA.

Brett has a 13 game hitting streak and is slashing .396/.415/.604 with a 1.019 OPS

Game 27 – May 9
8 – Royals
5 – Baltimore

WP – Bret Saberhagen (2-4)
LP – Mike Boddicker (2-4)
SV – Dan Quisenberry (4)

Frank White began the week hitting .190 with his only home run coming during a rehab sting in April. Today he snagged his a second multi-home run game in a row, hitting 2 solo shots off Mike Boddicker.

Saberhagen had 5 K's and 5 hits in 8 innings. His ERA is only 2.45.

Game 28 – May 10
3 – Royals
10 – Baltimore

WP – Tom Seaver (3-2)
LP – Charlie Leibrandt (2-4)

The nice little mini-win streak ends with the Orioles tagging Leibrandt for 14 hits and 9 runs. Baines and Cooper had multi-hit games in the loss.

Game 29 – May 11
3 – Royals
2 – Baltimore

WP – Danny Jackson (5-1)
LP – Ken Dixon (2-2)
SV – Dan Quisenberry (5)

Jackson continues to dominate. Although his ERA jumped from 1.07 to 1.24.

Jim Sundberg has been fairly cool this season, but went 2-2 with 2 walks. Orta and White collected RBI's.

-
We lost a game to the first place White Sox, but jumped to 3rd in the AL West.

Rule V selection Jim Deshaies' rehabilitation stint ends next week and will force a roster selection. Manny Trillo, Keith Thrower (Rule V), and Al Cowens haven't played much this year, nor has Tony Ferreira on the mound.

Frank White hit .292 last week with 5 HR's and 10 RBI's.

It's interesting (to me) to see that of the 10 main starters, half are hitting over .314, and half are hitting below .229. No middle ground.

Game 27 – May 12
7 – Detroit
1 – Royals

WP – Jack Morris (4-0)
LP – Bud Black (2-3)

Buddy Black faced 5 left handed hitting Tigers, but they batted around in the first and then Dwight Evans and Lance Parrish went back to back in the 5th, bringing an end to Black's day.

Game 28 – May 13
9 – Detroit
13 – Royals

WP – Tony Ferreira (1-0)
LP – Mark Clear (0-1)

The Tigers plated 4 in the first but Scott Bankhead settled down and he, along with Frank DiPino and Al Holland held the Tigers scoreless until the 9th.

We scored 5 in the third with all 9 coming to the plate. All 5 were scored on 5 singles a walk and a fielder's choice. Frank White homered in the 8th to give us a 7-4 lead.

But Quisenberry gave up 3 in the 9th, and 1 in the 10th. We matched the Tiger's 8th run in the bottom of the 10th. Tony Ferreira came in as the last rested arm in the pen. He gave up a solo home run to Larry Herndon and we entered the 11th down 9 to 8.

Hal McRae singled in his lone at bat, and Willie Wilson, slowed by a moderate day to day injury came in to pinch run. I figured a slowed Wilson was better than a normal McRae. Frank White walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd, and then Jim Sundberg poked a single past the second baseman. Wilson hustled in from 2nd and scored tying run. Dave Collins (who pinch ran for Al Cowens in the 10th) loaded the bases with an infield hit.

The Pat Sheridan, already 3-5 on the day, slammed a 432 foot Grand Slam to right-center to put us in the win column.

Ferreira picks up his first major league win.

Did I miss or forget a trade? I know the Royals have Alan Trammel now. Are the Tigers supposed to have both Dan Quisenberry and Charlie Liebrandt?

Game 32 – May 14
3 – Cleveland
4 – Royals

WP – Bret Saberhagen (3-4)
LP – Calvin Santarelli (1-5)

We built a 3-run lead going into the 5th with a Baines sac fly; a wild pitch, and a George Brett single. The Indians scratched out a tie in the 6th 3 singles and a double. In the 7th, Baines hit his 6th home run of the year off Santarelli (ERA 6.19), to put us up for good.

Saberhagen closed out his own game with a 1-2-3 9th. He struck out 8 over those 9 innings.

Game 33 – May 15
8 – Cleveland
5 – Royals

WP – Mark Huismann (1-1)
LP – Dan Quisenberry (1-1)

Cleveland starter Greg LaFever, ERA 9.45 held us for 7 innings, but we got to him in the 8th with a Harold Baines solo home run, an RBI double by Dave Collins, and an RBI single by Willie Wilson, to put us up 5-2.

But, Quisenberry gave up 5 hits and a walk, and all 6 Indians scored. It was his 4th blown save of the year. Mark Huismann, (waived last year and picked up by the Indians) got his 1st win of the season.

-
It's been a good May, but many on the team are either hot or cold, not much in between. Saberhagen and Jackson have ERAs under 3, but Black and Leibrandt are all above 5.

Quisenberry's ERA is 3.86, but he's given up 27 hits in 16.1 innings, with 4 unearned runs. I think I'll give him the weekend off.

Orta, Collins, White and Sundberg are all hitting below .230.

The recent additions are playing well. Trammell is hitting .296 with 2 HR and 13 RBI. He's on pace to score 88 runs. Cooper is hitting .316, 3, 23 in his first full year with the team. He's pacing on 113 RBIs. Baines leads the team with 7 home runs and is hitting .309. He's on pace for 34 HR's and 128 RBIs, which would both be career highs.

I optioned Tony Ferreira after the game to make room for Rule V draftee Jim Deshaies. He was hurt at the end of spring training and spent a couple weeks on the DL, and 4 weeks on a rehab. He was 0-2 with a 6.83 ERA in 5 AAA starts. Not sure how long he'll last if he keeps that pace though.

In return, I pick up 19 y/o LHP prospect Wally Ritchie. He's pitched 7 innings in A-ball and not given up a run.

The prime return is Al Holland. 0-2 with a 3.55 ERA. He saved 54 games in 83 and 84. He wants to close, but won't supplant Quisenberry.

I remember Wally Ritchie. Kinda crazy reliever who was all arms and legs coming at you. He had that awkward lefty look. He didn't last long IRL though.
