What If: Bobby Orr a Leaf
Back in 1960, the Leafs were tipped off about a 12 year old Bobby Orr, however, given his young age, they never got around to protecting him. Eventually, the Bruins stumbled upon him, and nabbed him. But, what if, on an off chance, Davidson heads up to see Orr play, realizes the heck of a player he is, and grabs him at first chance. What if Orr debuts with the Leafs in 1966-67?
Here is that hypothetical world realized in FHM 4. The settings will be FHM 4 Player Development, and the draft will be included. I will not tamper at all except for switching Orr from Boston to Toronto. |

1966-67 Season
With an aging blueline of Tim Horton (36), Allan Stanley (40), Marcel Pronovost (36), Bob Baun (30), Larry Hillman (29), Kent Douglas (30), and Al Arbour (33) the addition of young Parry Sound native Bobby Orr is very welcome among Leafs fans. The phenom is coming off of a 94 point season in 47 games with the Oshawa Generals, and 28 points in 17 playoff games.
At only 18 years old, many peg Orr as already being the next Doug Harvey, perhaps better. The Maple Leafs have plenty of reason to be excited for this season. Pre-season Playing with Larry Hillman, the young Orr posts 6 assists in 7 games, including a 3 point outing against Boston. Regular Season Young Bobby Orr leads the Maple Leafs with 62 points in 62 games (9+53). However, the Leafs made an ill-advised trade, sending Dave Keon to Detroit for Dean Prentice and Dwight Carruthers. Coupled with an injury to Frank Mahovlich, this mismanagement saw the Leafs fall to 5th place with a 23-38-9 record, missing the playoffs. Orr was named the Calder Trophy winner. Playoffs Detroit defeats Chicago in 6 games to capture the Stanley Cup. Last edited by Leafs67; 06-09-2018 at 05:47 AM. |

1967-68 Season
Off-season
The expansion draft obviously changes the landscape of the NHL. The Leafs saw Johnny Bower retire, and a plethora of players, including George Armstrong, Andy Bathgate, Brian Conacher, Gerry Ehman, Larry Jeffrey, Eddie Joyal, Jim Pappin, Eddie Shack, and Ed Van Impe, lost in the Expansion Draft. The Leafs selected Al Karlander 8th overall in the Amateur Draft. In the pre-season, Orr found himself a new partner, in Jim Dorey. He notched 2 goals and 6 assists for 8 points in 7 games. Regular Season Once again, the Leafs fell into 5th place in their division, with a 29-35-10 record, missing out on the playoffs. Orr's 17 goals and 50 assists placed him 2nd in team scoring, behind the 73 points of a healthy Frank Mahovlich. A lack of center depth is what really plagued the Leafs (trading Dave Keon looks pretty stupid now, huh?). Orr was named the Hart Trophy winner. Playoffs Detroit defeats Minnesota in 5 games to capture a 2nd consecutive Stanley Cup. |

1968-69 Season
Off-season
The Leafs drafted Lew Morrison at 6th overall. Brian Glennie became Orr's new defense partner this season. Orr put up 2+5 in 7 games. Regular Season Despite a 39-25-12 the Leafs missed the playoffs, 5th place once again. The fans are outraged by the playoff system, with a team like the 18-47-11 Oakland Seals in the mix. Bobby Orr himself had a record setting season, with 100 points to lead the team (18+82). Unger, Ellis, and Mahovlich formed a formidable first line with 80+ points each. Orr got his first Norris, and another Hart. Playoffs Detroit beats St. Louis in 6 games. |

1969-70 Season
Off-season
At 8th overall the Leafs nabbed Ivan Boldirev. Orr went 4+6 in 7 games in the pre-season. Glennie has remained his partner. Regular Season With a 45-23-8 record, the Leafs came 4th place, literally deadlocked with the Habs for 4th place...yikes. Orr led the way with 115 points (26+89). Playoffs The Leafs are promptly swept by Chicago. Orr puts up 2 assists in the series. Chicago goes on to win the Cup against Minnesota. Orr wins the Hart, Norris, and Ross. |

1970-71 Season
Off-season
The Leafs lose the likes of Pulford, Prentice, and Morrison in the Expansion Draft. They draft Errol Thompson 10th overall. Orr has a 1+3 in 4 games, before getting injured in the lower body. Regular Season Orr goes 32+64 for a 96 point season, modest considering his former totals. Only Unger (43) had more goals for the Leafs this season. The team finished 3rd in the East with a 40-26-12 record. Playoffs The Leafs lost a 7 game nailbiter to the Rangers. Orr had 3+2 in the series. He captured another Norris. |
