Does there have to be two sub-leagues?

I'm planning a campaign starting in 1903, and I want to rewrite Teams.csv to match the actual history--i.e., to have teams come and go as they did in real life. In doing so, I noticed that there is always an NL and an AL, even in years where the National League (or National Association) was the only major league operating.

My question: is this a hard-coded requirement? Does there have to be two sub-leagues at all times? What would happen if I changed them all to NL?

Hmmm it seems the history can't be changed that way, anyway. The defunct teams still show up as defunct, but the active teams retain the false history anyway
