2023 EASTERN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES RECAP Chicago Hitmen (100-60) vs Alabama Slammers (90-70) Game 1: The residual effects of having to hold of St. Louis in the South down the stretch meant the Slammers couldn't line up their rotation as wanted for the ELCS opener. But when they spotted Dock Ellis a 2-0 lead before he ever took the slab, it seemed Alabama may be OK. The Hitmen answered with an RBI single in the bottom half, but the Slammers' Shane Victorino homered off Eppa Rixey in the top of the second to keep the lead at two. A Cal Ripken SAC fly in the bottom half brought it to 3-2, though, and in the bottom of the fourth Chicago catcher Frank Snyder hit a solo shot to tie it and with two outs third baseman Pete Ward hit a two-run shot to give the Hitmen a 5-3 lead. Ellis was done after five and the Slammers' bullpen held the fort, but Rixey settled in after the first two innings and kept Alabama scoreless through the seventh before Koji Uehara and Scott Linebrink closed it out to put the Hitmen up 1-0. Chicago 5, Alabama 3 (Chicago leads 1-0) Game 2: After starting the season 10-0 with a sub-2 ERA in the first half, Chicago's Nolan Ryan went 5-6 with a 4.93 ERA in the second half. But the fireballing Texan found his first half form here, throwing six innings of one-run, two-hit ball and getting backed by homers from Lou Gehrig and Frank Snyder as Chicago took the first two games of the series at home. Jerry Koosman allowed three runs over six in taking the loss for Alabama. Chicago 4, Alabama 1 (Chicago leads 2-0) Game 3: Cal Ripken had three hits to raise his series average to .500 and Jose Cardenal had two, including a homer, as both drove in a pair to put Alabama to the brink of elimination. Jesse Tannehill, a three-time All-Star and 21-game winner for the 2018 champion Memphis Sounds, battled through 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs but never letting things get away from him, as Chicago knocked around Noodles Hahn for five runs over 4 2/3 and tacked on a pair against the Alabama bullpen to take a commanding series lead. Chicago 7, Alabama 4 (Chicago leads 3-0) Game 4: JD Drew drove in four runs, Jose Cardenal had four hits and 20-game winner Ron Darling worked seven solid innings as the Chicago Hitmen completed a four-game sweep of an overmatched Alabama squad that seemed worn out from the stretch run all series long. Their frustrations boiled over when Bobby Murcer was ejected in the fifth for arguing balls and strikes. Dock Ellis was knocked around for the second time in the series, and a rested Koji Uehara - who had 36 saves during the season - through two shutout innings to close out the ELCS and send the Hitmen to the ABL Championship Series. Chicago 8, Alabama 4 (Chicago wins series 4-0) Series MVP: Jose Cardenal (9-for-18, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1.304 OPS)

WESTERN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES REVIEW Seattle Grinders (89-71) vs Los Angeles Lightning (93-67) Game One: The upstart Grinders got exactly what they needed from ace Schoolboy Rowe, who gave them 6 1/3 innings of four-hit, one-run ball and Seattle made CC Sabathia pay for mistakes in a five inning, four-run effort. JR Richard, moved to the L.A. bullpen late in the season, was terrific, hurling four innings of shutout ball. But the Lightning could never mount anything against Rowe or Matt Cain, who put up 2 2/3 scoreless to close it out as Seattle's Cinderella story continues. Seattle 4, Los Angeles 1 (Seattle leads series 1-0) Game Two: Roy Campanella went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI and Roberto Clemente's bases-loaded, bases-clearing double in the 7th broke open an eventual rout. Brandon Morrow allowed two runs over 7 2/3 for Seattle, while A.J. Burnett allowed four runs over five for Los Angeles. Pascual Perez surrendered four runs in 1 1/3, including Clemente's backbreaker, and the Lightning suffered their second straight defeat at home to open the series that heads to Seattle and what is sure to be a raucous crowd. Seattle 10, Los Angeles 5 (Seattle leads series 2-0) Game Three: Dave Boswell allowed a run in the first but nothing else through seven and Earl Weaver's Lightning battered Seattle starter Tex Hughson for eight runs over 3 2/3, led by the heart of the order: Bill Terry, Willie Mays and Mike Schmidt went a combined 10-for-15, scoring five runs and driving in five as well in what seemed to be a rout in the making. But Seattle had other ideas, as Yan Gomes' two-run shot in the eighth and Judy Johnson's grand slam in the ninth whipped the Seattle crowd into a frenzy. But J.R. Richard fanned Manny Ramirez with two out and the tying run 90 feet away to avert disaster and get Los Angeles back into the series. Los Angeles 9, Seattle 8 (Seattle leads series 2-1) Game Four: In the minors for most of the season, Jamie Moyer went 5-1 with a 3.80 ERA for Los Angeles down the stretch. He kept up his strong work in the crucial matchup in game four with a complete game effort, backed by two-run doubles from Sherm Lollar and Charlie Hollocher off Seattle starter Mike Moore and a late Mike Schmidt two-run blast to seal it as the Lightning even up the WLCS. Los Angeles 7, Seattle 3 (Series tied 2-2) Game Five: It was the Rowe Show again for Seattle, whose ace threw a clutch complete game four hitter, fanning eight to outduel CC Sabathia again as Sabathia, as he did in the opener, again battled control issues - walking six - and Seattle again made him pay. Roy Campanella kept up his torrid series, smacking a three-run homer in the first and a solo shot in the third, and Roberto Clemente had three hits and drove in three as the Grinders became the first team in the series to notch a home win, giving themselves the series edge and needing only a split in Los Angeles to advance to the ABL Championship Series. Seattle 8, Los Angeles 1 (Seattle leads 3-2) Game Six: Bill Terry took Brandon Morrow deep for a three-run shot in the first and A.J. Burnett blew threw the Seattle lineup through the first three innings as Los Angeles hoped to force a Game Seven. But Mike Trout bunted for a single, stole second and scored on Manny Ramirez's single to get Seattle on the board in the fourth, and after a Judy Johnson RBI single scored Johnny Bates in the fifth to make it 3-2, Dan Brouthers walloped a two-run homer to put Seattle into the lead and bring silence to Los Angeles. Johnson took JR Richard deep for the second time in the series to give Seattle an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Morrow, a reliever turned starter, was done after five, and Matt Cain threw a scoreless sixth. Cain opened the seventh walking Bill Monroe on four pitches. Monroe was sacrificed to second before Charlie Hollocher singled to left but Monroe was held at third. Cain walked Willie Mays to load the bases and was done for the day. Jason Frasor relieved him and allowed an RBI single to Bill Terry to bring L.A. within a run. With Mike Schmidt at the plate and a 1-1 count, Frasor uncorked a wild pitch to bring home the tying run. He'd ultimately strike out Schmidt, but a 1-0 pitch to George Burns would get past Campanella for a passed ball, scoring Mays and putting the Lightning in front 6-5. Burns flew out but the damage had been done. Richard retired the side in order in the eighth, striking out two, and retired the first two in the ninth. But the Grinders lived up to their name, working out three straight walks, including a 10 pitch battle by Dan Brouthers. Campanella, a stud all series but looking to atone for the crucial passed ball in the seventh, smacked a grounder to Schmidt who got the force to end the game and even a series the Grinders were eight outs away from winning. On to Game Seven! Los Angeles 6, Seattle 5 (Series tied 3-3) Game Seven: Dave Boswell posted a 5.74 ERA during the regular season. He would now be tasked with throwing Game Seven of the WLCS for Los Angeles after a strong effort in Game Three. Three second inning doubles by Seattle contributed to three runs and it looked as though Boswell's night would be short. But L.A. answered with a pair in the bottom half as Sherm Lollar hit an RBI single and Seattle starter Tex Hughson hit George Burns with the bases loaded to force in a run. Both pitchers would settle in, but in the bottom of the sixth the Lightning broke through, tying the game on a Bill Monroe single. But the big blow came from exactly where you'd expect it - two-time Western League MVP Willie Mays, who had batted .192 in the series until his two-run triple put Los Angeles in front 5-3. Seattle, as they'd proven all season and all series, wouldn't die. Dan Brouthers homered to lead off the eighth. But L.A. manager Earl Weaver, having burned his bullpen throughout the series, elected to ride out Boswell to the shock of, well, pretty much everyone. But he retired the next three to escape the 8th and L.A. tacked on an insurance run in the bottom half when Charlie Hollocher's double off Willis Hudlin scored Fred Snodgrass. Yet in the top of the ninth, there was Boswell to the slab again, with relievers Mel Harder (3.21) and James Shields (2.80) available. Boswell got Clemente and Bill Rogell to ground out. But Mike Lansing took Boswell deep on his 133rd pitch of the night to bring Seattle within a run. And yet Boswell continued, facing Johnny Bates with lefty Wilbur Wood also available in the pen. But it was Boswell's game, and he got Bates to ground out to short to end it - capping a complete game, 11 strikeout, 139-pitch performance that stumped many but spared Weaver having to answer many questions about it afterward - for L.A. was back in the ABL Championship Series for the first time since 2020. Los Angeles 6, Seattle 5 (Los Angeles wins series 4-3) Series MVP: Roy Campanella (12-for-25, 3 HRs, 9 RBI)

ABL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES REVIEW Los Angeles Lightning (93-67) vs Chiago Hitmen (100-60) Game 1: If you were wondering whether the tense series vs. Seattle would take the starch out of Los Angeles, their 16-hit attack against Chicago to open up the ABL Championship Series probably answered that for you. Home runs from Bill Terry and Andy Pafko paced a barrage that saw every Lightning starter get a hit as Eppa Rixey was knocked out in the fourth after surrendering eight runs. Jamie Moyer came through in Game Four of the WLCS with a complete game effort that let the Lightning tie that series. He comes up huge again here with another complete game, a four-hit effort that silenced the Chicago crowd and put Los Angeles in the driver's seat in pursuit of their first ABL title. Los Angeles 11, Chicago 1 (Los Angeles leads series 1-0) Game 2: Chicago's Jesse Tannehill remembers his rookie season, the ABL's inaugural season of 2018. He won 21 games for the Memphis Sounds, who became the first ABL champions. He pitched Memphis into the playoffs in 2019 as well, when they lost the ABL Championship Series to Denver. He hadn't been back since until this year. He made his mark here, with 7 innings of one-run ball to help Chicago get level in the series, despite taking a no decision in the effort. CC Sabathia, who was knocked around twice in the Seattle series, battled gamely but Earl Weaver's faith in his horse betrayed him when, after Mike Schmidt tied the game for L.A. in the top of the 9th, he kept Sabathia in for the bottom half of the inning. The move proved disastrous as Sabathia, though he retired the first two men he faced, walked Cal Ripken Jr. That was it for Sabathia, who gave way to Mel Harder, who promptly surrendered a walkoff 2-run homer to Mark Grace to send the Chi-Town faithful into a frenzy and send the series to Los Angeles tied at a game apiece. Chicago 4, Los Angeles 2 (Series tied 1-1) Game Three: Chicago's Nolan Ryan and L.A. A.J. Burnett were supposed to provide a ton of gas in a matchup that turned into a dumpster fire through three innings, as the Lightning held a 6-5 lead at the end of the third. Both teams got strong relief work. Chicago got 4 2/3 of scoreless, four-hit ball from Doug Brocail, Scott Linebrink and Koji Uehara. Weaver called on J.R. Richard, who entered after Pete Ward homered off Burnett in the 6th to tie the game at 6. And Richard was terrific. But, as he had done throughout the postseason, Weaver rode the hot hand too long and, in the top of the ninth, with Ward on third and Lou Gehrig, a lefty and perennial 100-RBI man, stepping in, Richard was left to face him despite lefties Billy O'Dell and Wilbur Wood both rested and available in the bullpen. Gehrig roped an RBI single to give Chicago the lead in the game and, 3 outs later, the series. Chicago 7, Los Angeles 6 (Chicago leads series 2-1) Game Four: Ron Darling became the fifth 20-game winner in ABL history this season. But some critics said the total was a function of baseball's best offense rather than Darling's greatness, as his ERA of 4.15 yielded an ERA+ of only 109. But Darling made his statement loud and clear here, hurling a complete game four-hitter, fanning six and making Chicago's three runs off Dave Boswell - led by Willie Crawford's two-run homer - stand up to put Chicago a game away from the ABL championship. Chicago 3, Los Angeles 0 (Chicago leads series 3-1) Game Five: In a rematch of Game One, the fortunes, to understate completely, changed. Jamie Moyer was battered for 15 hits and 7 runs as Earl Weaver refused to utilize his full staff even in a must-win game, while Eppa Rixey recovered from a horrendous outing in the series opener to throw a complete game, allowing three runs (all in the ninth) on eight hits as the Chicago Hitmen were crowned ABL champions, becoming the first franchise in the ABL's six-year history to win a second crown. Game Five: Chicago 7, Los Angeles 3 (Chicago wins series 4-1) Series MVP: Willie Crawford (.556 AVG, 2 HRs, 4 RBI)

VEGAS BETS ON DUNLAP Bosses take 2B with first pick In a move that surprised most analysts, the Las Vegas Bosses used the No. 1 pick in the ABL amateur draft to select second baseman Fred Dunlap, who will walk right into the starting job. The Bosses, who took a step backward from their inaugural season, having won 70 games in 2022 and 66 last season, needed a second baseman after Dustin Pedroia exercised his option and became a free agent. Pedroia was acquired before last season in a trade with Memphis, but never got going, breaking his arm in April and missing two months of the season before finishing with a disappointing .258/.310/.379 slash line. "Dustin exercised his contract option as was his right," Vegas general manager Marco Gonzalez said. "We believe Fred Dunlap can step right in as a top notch defender and contact hitter who we expect will develop gap power quickly." While Gonzalez's evaluation of Dunlap seems fair, the Bosses have many holes to fill, and evaluators believe they could have gone with more of an impact player - particularly in a draft stocked with outfielders including Carl Yastrzemski, Sammy Sosa, Mookie Betts and Paul Hines, each of whom would have been a better bet to bolster the only offense in the ABL to average less than four runs per game last season.

CHARLOTTE STEALS FREE AGENCY SHOW Cougars dole out five of top 10 contracts in offseason If the post-2021 offseason was the ABL's MegaMillions and the post-2022 offseason was its $2 bet at the track, the post-2023 offseason was one of balance - except in Charlotte.
The Cougars have vaulted to the top payroll in the ABL, with a payroll topping $235 million after an offseason that saw them ink five of the top 10 free-agent contracts for a total of nearly half a billion dollars ($494.6 million). The haul? First up was catcher Bill Freehan, who batted .331 with 22 homers and a 5.3 WAR last season, all career highs with Portland. Freehan inked a five-year deal. A day later, Charlotte added second baseman Frank Chance, who had spent all six of his seasons with Phoenix and currently ranks 8th in ABL history in WAR at 28.5. Chance signed a seven-year deal. The team then decided to retain Cole Hamels, tied with former Denver teammate Steve Carlton as the winningest pitcher in ABL history (with 98). Hamels, acquired in a trade before the 2023 season, exercised his opt-out clause, but sought security more than dollars, inking a six-year deal for marginally more ($20.4 million up from $20 million) per year. Next came Dwayne Murphy, coming off a career-high 31 homers last season with Sacramento. Finally came the decision to bring back Larry Doby, taken by Charlotte in the third round of the ABL's inaugural draft in 2018 before being traded after 2019 to New Orleans for Al Hollingsworth. Doby, who didn't live up to expectations the first time around, has seen his WAR rise of the past three seasons, including a career-best 3.5. Though both centerfielders, it appears Murphy and Doby will form a sort of platoon/rotation...and an expensive one at that. "They know the [Eastern League] South is there for the taking. Every year, the division ends up up for grabs. So [owner Ryan] Reker decided to go all-in," one source said. "It's hard to blame him." The Cougars lost the division by a game in 2020 and two games in 2021. They've declined each of the last two years, including a franchise worst 73-87 this past season. All the while, Rekar has retained manager Bill Rigney, Charlotte's manager since the beginning. He now manages a team that - with other additions Ron Guidry, Bob Robertson and Mel Harder - could see a third of its roster change from last season. "Charlotte didn't just go out and spend money," one rival executive said. "They spent it wisely. Spending binges don't usually happen that way. But each of these moves seem sound." Time will tell. TOP 10 2023 FREE AGENT CONTRACTS Cole Hamels - CHA 6 years, $137.4M Frank Chance - CHA 7 years, $129M Nolan Ryan - COL 6 years, $108M Milt May - CHI 6 years, $96.9M Bill Freehan - CHA 5 years, $96M Jerry Koosman - ALA 7 years, $86.4M Dwayne Murphy - CHA 7 years, $81.2M Kevin Brown - DEN 6 years, $62.6M Francisco Lindor - DEN 7 years, $52.8M Larry Doby - CHA 6 years, $51.2M

ABL AROUND THE HORN - APRIL 2024 1. The Chicago Hitmen came out of the gates swinging, serving notice they have every intention of being the first team in ABL history to repeat as champs. Leading the way has been Mickey Mantle, who hammered 12 of the Hitmen’s league-leading 41 homers in the season’s first month. Mantle, the Eastern League MVP in 2022, finished second in the voting in last year’s championship season. He hopes to bring both another MVP and another title home in 2024. 2. So far, the head of the rookie class has been Seattle’s Corey Kluber, who has gone 5-0 with a 1.55 ERA despite walking 28 batters in 40 2/3 innings of work. The walks have been a surprise contrary to Kluber’s scouting report, but he’s navigated them, and so has Seattle, which holds the Western League’s best record at 18-10. 3. The Charlotte Cougars essentially rebuilt their team with their megaspending this offseason. But after a recent 2-8 stretch, they’re only 14-13, a game behind St. Louis in the Eastern League South. The biggest payoff so far has been Frank Chance, who leads the ABL in batting at .406. The four-time All-Star and two-time Golden Glove winner with Phoenix inked a 7-year, $129 million deal and has, through the first month at least, been worth every penny. 4. The Columbus Crushers haven’t gotten what they bargained for in free agency on the hill. Nolan Ryan is 1-2 with a 4.09 ERA and is on the DL with a forearm strain, while Bob Feller has been horrendous, going 0-3 with a 7.31 ERA through six starts. Feller’s most concerning as he’s battled injuries throughout his career and, though he has improved each of the past two seasons, he did so fighting assorted health issues. So when he looks as bad as he has thus far, the fear is that there’s more at issue. As such, Columbus’ three-headed monster plan of Feller, Ryan and Chief Bender has yet to find a groove.
