Help me Understand this Guy

What makes a guy take such a drastic turn for the worse defensively? Is this just a fluke thing, or is this soon-to-be-31 year old 2B bound for a life at DH?

He was an international FA signing and all of the stats you're seeing are from in-game. He is actually a real-life guy, but he's only lived in the OOTP universe for the stats you're seeing.

His overall defensive rating at 2B has bounced between 60-55, and most recently in November of 2018 (real-time), he has dropped to a 50. His other defensive ratings are currently:
50 range
55 error
50 infield arm
60 turn DP

Looks to me like he lost considerable range. Given that he's crossed the 30 year old line it suggests he's going to have to be a thumper with the bat in order to overcome his defensive weakness if he want's to keep his position.

That said, defensive stats can go all over the place in both OOTP and real life, and in only 85 games, you never know what's real until you know.

Sure, but what's odd is that his other numbers above for 2015 look almost the same. So how could his range be SO much worse in the same amount of attempts and innings, more or less? Did THAT many more balls get hit to him? That seems unlikely.

Perhaps the 2B defensive standard across the league is much better this season?

Yes, this is also possible...depending on how OOTP calculates ZR.

just an average 2b, probably. bit weak defensively for that position, but i bet most teams favor offense there. i see some truly horrendous defensive players playing 2b/ss/cf often in my league. in that respect, he may be in the top half of defensive 2b that actually start in your league.

i know ~4RF is good for SS, but probably a bit low-side for a 2b? if anythign this guy performs better than his ratings, imo. i'd focus on those and not defensive results. results lag behind ratings as they change. mostly neagtively due to age, obviously.

if he maintains, it isn't a great defensive 2b, but he's more than siffucient. if he's a beast at the plate, i doubt you can find a better alternative. that being said, at that age, i hope you were already finding alternatives for 2-3 years now, or willing to use FA when one shows up.. again, need a window of time even for a FA to likely find an equal or better 2b.

this guy must have been old to start. you were only going to get ~5years and needed to find someone almost immediately if going the prospect route. it's better to preempt this stuff than wait for it to happen. you'll get far better returns.

ronco:

since they don't really play out events in a physics modeled way, the defensive metrics may actually mean more in ootp than in RL.. in RL as of recent years they are not so consistently measured or something .. the new tracking system may have improved them? they are doing some crazy things with data collection now... the less a human's bias is involved in data collection, the better these defensive metrics will be in RL. once it's all based on quantitative data instead of qualatiative, and that data is consistently measured, then it will be some good stuff.

as of recent past, i see reputation playing a role for some reason.

Defense is complex, both in real life and in OOTP.
