Signing Eastern Bloc players

I started a game as the 1980 Toronto Maple Leafs and was able to sign Fetisov and Makarov straight away.

Is this supposed to be possible, or did I miss some setting somewhere?

Definitely not, you're supposed to get a message preventing it. But I just tried and was able to sign them, too, so it looks like that got broken somewhere along the line.

I also noticed that the NHL Mark Messier Leadership award is awarded after the 1980 season. This is a bit early considering Messier was only 19 at that time :-)

Some of the other awards are also named incorrectly for the time period.

It seems to be a problem with all Eastern Bloc players - I can also offer a contract to Larionov.

Yeah, there's no way to vary award names by year at the moment, so people get the Messier award 40 years before Messier was born. I think we may be able to do it with a change in the database structure to attach the awards names to the league rules, which can be altered season-by-season, but I'm not sure how much work that'll be.

Yup, if it's not working for one, it'll probably be that way for all of them. You'll likely be able to sign the Czechs, too.
