July 1906

Only two championship fights this month but both should be dandies.

HW - Charley Mitchell (19-4) vs. #4 Peter Jackson (22-3) Jackson tries to win his second title, he won the LBA back in Sept. 01, defended it twice before losing to current champ Jack Johnson in Oct. 02. Due to some weird rankings he is just now getting back into the top ten and finally got another shot at the title. He should be favored.

MW - Jack Dempsey (25-2) vs. #2 Stanley Ketchel (14-2) #1 Fitzsimmons was eligible to fight this month but Dempsey chose to make his first title defense against Ketchel instead. The prompted Fitzsimmons to call out Dempsey, stating that Jack got lucky in the last fight and obviously he knows it since he is ducking me now.

A little different scheduling this month. I decided once a year I would use the LBA ratings and match the highest with the next highest and so on down the list. Should make some interesting fights this month and change up the rankings a little.

A few intriguing fights

HW - #3 Armstrong vs. #5 Heenan (Heenan UD12)
LHW - #2 Gardner vs. #3 McCoole (DRAW10)
MW - #1 Fitzsimmons vs. #4 LaBlanche (Fitz KO10)
LW - #3 Nelson vs #6 Blackburn (Nelson SD12)
FW - #1 Attell vs. #3 Smith (Attell UD12)
FW - #4 Driscoll vs. #7 Corbett (Driscoll TKO10)

I'll list the outcomes of these fights here in bold

Ketchel Stops Dempsey To Win Lba Middleweight Title

July 9th, 1906

Stanley Ketchel (15-2) scored a TKO11 over Jack Dempsey NP (25-3) to win the LBA Middleweight title.

The fight was exciting from the start with both fighters landing bombs. It see-sawed back and forth with both fighters seeming to take over the fight at different times. No knockdowns but lots of blood.

Ketchel was cut under the right eye in the first. Dempsey's right eye began to swell in the 6th. This was strange considering the points total for round 6 was heavily in Dempsey's favor. He must of gotten a thumb in the eye while I wasn't looking!!!.

Ketchel suffered a cut over his left eye in the 7th. Dempsey began bleeding over his swollen right eye in the 8th. By the 11th Dempsey's right eye had swollen shut. Halfway through the round the ref stopped the bout.

I had it 96-95 Dempsey at the time of the stoppage. Tom Trunzo ringside had it 96-94 Dempsey. The official judges had it 95-95/95-95/96-94 Dempsey.

On the undercard

WW - Rube Ferns (17-7) UD10 Al Neill (2-6-1)
HW - Joe Godfrey (3-18-2) UD6 Bill McKinnon (1-1) (McKinnon fought as a beginner in this club fight)
LHW - Dan Flynn (1-1-1) Tech Draw Vincent Goss (TC) (0-2-1) (Flynn fought as a beginner in this club fight)
LW - Jack Daly (5-0) TKO1 Jason Ellis (TC) (0-3) (Daly fought as a beginner in this club fight)
FW - Billy Murphy (6-18) UD10 Billy Barrett (1-10-2)

Jackson Regains Piece Of Heavyweight Title

July 27th, 1906

Peter Jackson (23-3) won a UD15 over Charley Mitchell (19-5) to regain a share of the Heavyweight title almost 4 years after losing it to Jack Johnson. this time he won the LBC title.

Jackson dominated the whole fight losing 2 maybe 3 rounds total. His lip was cut in the 9th, otherwise Mitchell barely hit him the whole fight. Mitchell went down in the 15th but was otherwise unmarked.

I had it 148-137. Scott Lang ringside had it 148-137 also. The official judges had it 146-140/149-136/148-137.

On the undercard

LW - Frank Erne (8-0-1) UD10 Austin Gibbons (10-14-2)
LHW - Morris Harris (4-6) TKO5 John Flood (2-6)
WW - Terry Martin (2-0) UD6 Gene Lawson (TC) (0-2) (Martin fought as a beginner in this club fight)
BW - Monte Attell (3-0) UD6 Kid Bebee (0-6) (Attell fought as a beginner in this club fight)
LHW - Duncan McDonald (7-13-1) MD10 Mike Kine (6-12-3) (club fight)

"YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE CHAMP" JEFFRIES BARELY RETAINS TITLE

August 8, 1906

James Jeffries (26-2) scored a MD15 over #7 Sam McVey (14-4) in a controversial decision. Bottom line is you have to beat the champ and McVey suffered a knockdown and didn't do quite enough to overcome it.

It was clear from the start that Jeffries realized he needed big shots to win the fight as he abandoned any strategy after the first round. Jeffries dropped his hands after the first and started hunting down McVey looking to land the big shot. He lost the first 4 rounds and 5 out of the first 6. His right eye started to swell in the 6th.

He finally caught McVey in the 7th when he landed a clean shot that opened a cut under McVey's left eye and then worked it the rest of the round. McVey's left eye started to swell.

Jeffries then caught McVey with an uppercut in the 8th that landed McVey on queer street. He took a 9 count then held on to make it out of the round. McVey ran from Jeffries in the 9th to get his legs back. Then started to find his range in the 10th. He took 3 of the next five rounds.

Jeffries corner told him he needed the 15th to win the fight. McVey's corner told him to stay away and the title was his. Jeffries corner was right. Jeffries won the 15th and the fight because of it.

McVey landed 420 punches to Jeffries 317. McVey also landed 56% to Jeffries 32%. But Jeffries was the agressor throwing almost 250 more punches.

I had McVey winning 143-142. Jim Trunzo ringside had it even at 142.
I have two judges names champ one and champ two who judge all title fights with a randomly selected judge. They are there to favor the champ, like happens IRL. This was the first time I noticed it affected the outcome. Champ One had it 143-141, Champ Two had it 144-142 both in favor of Jeffries. The random judge who had no bias scored it even at 142.

As you can tell I enjoyed this fight , and the outcome.

On the undercard

LHW - John Donaldson (6-5) UD10 Jack Sullivan (12-12-1)
LHW - Jack Graham (6-1) KO2 Fred Cooley (3-8-1)
MW - Joe Thomas (5-0) UD6 Dick Moore (0-15-1) (Thomas fought as a beginner in this club fight)
FW - Billy O'Donnell (3-0-1) TKO6 Alvin Rose (TC) (1-4) (O' Donnell fought as a beginner in this club fight)
LHW - Jack Stewart (5-11-3) UD10 Fred Robinson (5-16-4) (club fight)

Young Peter Jackson Takes The Title Belt

August 14th, 1906

#1 Young Peter Jackson (8-3) scored a UD15 over Champ Dixie Kid (12-8-5) to win the LBC Welterweight Title.

Jackson's power was too great for Kid as Jackson dropped Kid 7 times during the fight. Kid came out and boxed his way to the first 3 rounds. Jackson dropped him for the first time in the 4th. He then battered Kid in the 5th, causing Kid to carry his hands low. Jackson dropped Kid for the 2nd time in the 9th, causing Kid's left eye to swell.

Jackson then dropped Kid for the 3rd time in the 12th causing Kid's right eye to swell. Kid went down twice in the 13th and twice in the 15th. He galantly beat the count each time but lost decisively on the score cards.

I had 144-134. Mark Moe ringside had it 145-136. the official judges had it 145-134/144-133/146-132.

On the undercard

WW - Dick Burge (10-12-2) UD10 Jimmy Gardner (13-10-2)
HW - Jim Daly (10-13-4) UD6 Oliver Williams (3-1-1) ( Williams fought as a beginner in this club fight)
WW - Jimmy Clabby (4-0) UD6 Owen Ziegler (5-11) (Clabby fought as a beginner in this club fight)
BW - Billy Rotchford (6-3) UD8 Austin Rice (1-17-1) (Rotchford fought as pre-prime in this club fight)
LHW - JH Brown (8-12) UD10 Chris Pearson (1-9) (club fight)

George Dixon Takes Bantamweight Title

August 29th, 1906

In a surprise upset, #3 George Dixon (18-5) scored an UD15 over Champ Terry McGovern. Not so much a surprise because Dixon isn't good enough. But a surprise because McGovern had previously knocked Dixon out twice.

This bout appeared to be headed in the same direction when Terry downed Dixon in the first. Dixon recovered and boxed his way to a win in the next 3 rounds. McGovern held a slight edge in the 5th and then dropped Dixon again in the 6th. Then Terry won the 7th, but only won one more round the rest of the way.

I actually gave Dixon a 10-8 round in the 8th as he cut McGovern and out pointed him 28-3. Actually thought the fight was going to be stopped. Dixon took the 14th and 15th which it turns out he needed on all the judges scorecards to win the fight and take the title.

I had it not so close with Dixon winning 143-139. Shane MaCleod (of the clan MaCleod's) and all 3 judges had it 142-141.

On the undercard

MW - Charley Hitte (7-5) UD10 John P. Clow (12-14) (Hitte stepped up to MW for this win)
MW - Jack Williams (8-0) UD10 Edward Rollins (11-15)
FW - Will Curley (7-0) TKO6 Eddie Santry (10-18-1) (Curley fought pre-prime in this club fight, moves to prime and the upper division with this win)
HW - John Ferguson (10-14-1) KO2 Mervine Thompson (7-12-2) (club fight)
LW - Danny Duane (2-6-1) UD10 Billy Frazier (10-16-1) (club fight)

September 1906

September brings us 3 title fights

LHW - Joe Choynski (20-7) vs. #1 (FC) Jack Root (21-6)
---- these two have met twice before with Root winning both 12-16-1901 TKO3 and 08-11-1902 KO6 for the title. This is Choynski's 3rd defense

LW - Joe Gans (22-1-1) vs. #3 Jewey Cooke (7-2-1)
----- Gans making his 12th title defense should be another easy bout

FW - Young Griffo (20-4-3) vs. #2 Aurelio Herrera (10-2)
----- long awaited first title shot for Herrera. He will try to avenge one of his losses. Griffo won a UD10 on 04-26-1905. Griffo second defense, fought to a draw last time out.

I figured you would like that .... Herrera didn't fare too well in his first bout with Griffo. He couldn't land any punches, I'm rooting for a different outcome this time.

Choynski Retains Title With Draw

September 10, 1906

Joe Choynski (20-7-1) fought to a DRAW15 with #1 Jack Root (21-6-1).

Boos rained down when the decision was handed out. Everyone in the building thought Choynski had done enough to win the bout, despite getting dropped in the 3rd round.

Choynski was only down for a 3 count and then was cut over the left eye in the 7th. After Joe won the first 3rd of the fight, Root seemed to take control in the 2nd 3rd, winning rounds 6,7, and 8.

But then Choynski took over winning 5 of the last 7.

I had it 144-142 Choynski. Mirco Mizera ringside had it 146-139 Choynski. so we were definitely surprised when it came back 144-141C/ 142-143R/ 143-143.

On the undercard

WW - Al Neill (3-6-1) SD10 Buddy Ryan (5-8)
WW - Kyle Whitney (7-0-1) SD10 Dick Burge (10-13-2)
MW - Joe Costa (3-0-1) UD6 Neil Rowe (TC) (0-2) (Costa fought as a beginner in this club fight)
LW - Geroge McFadden (6-2-1) UD8 Mike Cushing (5-15-4) (McFadden fought pre-prime in this club fight)
HW - Joe Lannon (11-13) KO8 Joe Godfrey (3-19-2) (club fight)

Gans In A Snoozefest

September 16th, 1906

Joe Gans (23-1-1) won a UD15 over #3 Jewey Cooke (7-3-1) in a very non viewer friendly fight.

With both fighters known for defense it was a tactical fight that Gans won because Cooke ran out of gas. It was a back and forth fight for the first 12 rounds and then Gans knocked an exhausted Cooke down in the 13th and then won the 14th and 15th to retain his title.

This was Gans 12th title defense.

I had it 145-141 and did Tom Trunzo ringside. The official judges had it 144-143/145-142/144-141.

On the undercard

LW - Freddie Welsh (8-0) UD10 Andy Bowen (12-15)
HW - Dick O'Brien (2-1) UD6 Jem Stewart (4-13-2) (O'Brien fought as a beginner in this club fight)
MW - Jim Griffin (5-0) KO1 Mat Murphy (TC) (0-3) (Griffin fought as a beginner in this club fight)
FW - Ben Jordan (3-0) UD6 Herman Landfield (3-9) (Jordan fought as a beginner in this club fight)
HW - James McCoy (4-13) KO10 Jim Miles (5-16-3) (club fight)

Griffo has Herrera's number again

September 25th, 1906

Young Griffo (21-4-3) won a TKO9 over #2 Aurelio Herrera (10-3) to retain the LBA Featherweight title.

As in their first match the boxer was too slick for Herrera. Staying away from Herrera's power, Griffo landed at will swelling up Herrera's right eye in the 7th and cutting Herrera's right eye bad enough for the fight to be stopped in the 9th.

Herrera landed big power shots whenever he got close enough but it wasn't enough. He wasn't able to get enough shots in succession to really hurt Griffo.

Herrera will be back, but maybe not in the ring again with Griffo. The LBC title will open up in 1907 and Herrera should be in the race for that belt.

I had it 78-74 Griffo at the time of the stoppage. The official judges had it 77-75/77-75/79-73.

On the undercard

FW - Kid Broad (8-1) MD10 Ole Oleson (3-7)
LHW - George Byers (7-0-1) DRAW10 Charles Cooley (2-5-1)
WW - Jack Willis (2-1) UD6 Otto Sieloff (2-13-1) (Willis fought as a beginner in this club fight)
FW - Billy Barrett (2-10-2) UD6 Jack Roberts (1-3) (Roberts fought as a beginner in this club fight)
MW - Tommy Chandler (8-15-2) TKO2 Bill Slavin (2-18-1) (club fight)
