August in Review
The Hoggs had their best month of the season, going 19-9. They're 76-57, but have only been able to extend their division lead by a half-game, the Atlanta Scallywags going 18-9 to keep pace with us. The good news is that New Britain and Plymouth haven't been able to keep up, both finishing the month at exactly .500, 9 1/2 games behind. Rick Rueschel has gone 2-4 since joining the team, with an ERA of 5.77 and an FIP of 5.05. He gave up 3 homers in his last start but still managed to jag the win. Al Kaline is also struggling, his slash-line .223/.277/.363. Carl Furillo's going great guns, though. He has a flame next to his name and is hitting .270/.315/.448, with 15 homers from 93 hits. Our BA of .275 is good enough for best in the conference. Our OBP of .328 is good enough for 10th-best. Our 328 walks are the worst in the NC. On the other hand, we strike out the least, with just 650 Ks, and we have the second-most XBH, with 423. On the pitching side, we've allowed the least homers (110), and have only walked 380 batters (4th-best). We don't strike a lot of guys out though. 790 so far, worst in the NC. Our starters are 2nd-best, while our bullpen is 9th-best. Dierker hasn't been great as a long reliever. I might have to call Swan back up. It's going to be a hard race down the home stretch. Anything could happen! EDIT: Our schedule is a bit of a weird one, as we have the 30th of September off. I hope it doesn't come down to us needing another team to lose on the final day to make the postseason... EDIT2: Speaking of 20-run games, we gave up 20 runs for the first time in our history this month. Against the Scallywags, too...

I dropped another $5 into the game in a vain attempt to stave off the abysmal shame of consecutive relegations (currently in the red by 1 1/2 games in Diamond), but the pack luck was not exactly with me. Got two Golds with five packs, but they (A.J. Pollock, Matt Carpenter) were exactly the sort of position player I didn't need. Selling all the detritus from the five packs amounted to a new one, and with that I pulled a 1941 Reds SP Elmer Riddle. Never heard of him, but I start to believe in movement over stuff with the way my diamond starters are getting pummeled start for start, so maybe his 71 there will help the rotation. If not, I will declare relegation as divined and unavoidable, which will be the only way I can accept the infamy.

I can relate to the "burning a hole in my pocket" part. I can't ever save up as much as I'd like. I had 10k saved up and went looking on the AH (back in April) and saw Reuschel and couldn't resist and got him for the same price. So far, he's been unlucky and has the lowest rWAR of my 5 SPs. But his ratings are better than the one I replaced him with and he's about the same as Dierker so I feel like he's a good deal. I'm sure he'll work out well for both of us - patience is key!

On a side note: after yesterday's unheard of PP earnings, today I earned all of 340PP

Both of my teams are in the Gold WC hunt. The Hoboken Zephyrs are still Pythag cursed (-11), but they've run off a string of wins that have them 2.5 games up for a second WC spot in G318 at 72-61. I have about 7600 PP burning a hole in my pocket, and as much as Live Ozzie Albies has been solid for me my entire time in PT (at least 2.5 WAR per season from bronze to gold), that 1963 Gehringer in the AH seems like a sizable upgrade for the future.
The Port Washington Packrats are also in a 2nd WC spot at 69-66, with a 1.5 game lead on the field in G311. Unlike the Zephyrs, the Packrats have been getting it done with their bats. Need that offense to hold up for these final 27 games. |

In Bronze .353 the National Conference is wrapping up with no drama in the division champ playoff spots, but the wildcard is up for grabs. My Tucson Sidewinders have finally started to turn around their terrible defense and are slotted in the top wildcard spot in the moment.
Sadly, in the part of the game that I really have been paying attention to, Tucon's Vic Raishi just doesn't look like he'll have enough to deny Pedro Martinez a triple crown. With an ERA .75 points better than anyone, and 3 wins league with 4 starts to go, only Vic Raishi looked to have a realistic chance to catch Pedro in K's this year, but even with a superior K/9 and 2 extra starts he's 28 behind as the season hits the late stretch. Also, while it was probably not worth the training time, George Vukovich emerged as the MVBronze, with as a worthy CF Platoon member (w/Torii Hunter), hitting .303/.354/.454 and putting together his defensive skills enough to only hemmorage -5.1 ZR through 100 starts. The CF platoon has 167 hits, 41 2bs and 19 homeruns for a combined 3.0 WAR, which makes them the third most valuable bat on my team. Not bad for a couple of bronzes, especially since they out performed an 80 Jose Vidro. |

Still headed for relegation with time running out. There is NO offense on this team. NO offense. Except that their non-offense offends me a whole lot …!

What is going on. Denver is tied in first place. Pitching staff is doing well.
Don't know about the 11-16 August. But 9-4 in September thus far.

Lost the last 3, 2 to the Atlanta Scallywags, who have closed the gap between us to 5 games. Now have an off day followed by a 7-game stretch at home. The last 3 of those are against Atlanta. Atlanta are 3 games clear in the top wildcard spot.
Hopefully we can jag a couple wins during our 4-game series against Plymouth. They're 6 games back in the wildcard, so technically still in contention but realistically not. *chews nails*

16-inning loss to Plymouth 4-3. Thankfully Atlanta also lost their game, so there remains a 5-game distance between us...

Argh - 5 losses in a row! Atlanta move to within 4 games of us. The pennant chase screen still says we're a 100% chance to make the postseason but I wish we'd nail it down!
I also wish there wasn't a delay with being able to download box scores...

A win! And a loss to Atlanta. We're now 5 games up. Magic number of 3.
And I just realized we play 3 games in October to finish off the regular season. Here I was thinking my regular season ended on September 29... then I was looking at the schedule and thinking, hang on, that's not 162 games...

Another loss for the Hoggs. We're staggering towards the finish line. We're 1-6 across our last 7. Now to play Atlanta in a 3-game set. Our lead is 4, our magic number still 3. At least we play them at home... Wait, we're only 40-38 at home this season. D'oh!

The Ohio Bloodbuzz are currently 111-44 in Bronze .205, easily the best record in the league. They clinched in the early part of September.
The Beverly’s Road Geese are leading the NC Wildcard race in Silver .262. The Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks are 1.5 games out of the 2nd Wildcard. There is a real possibility that my two Silver teams will play each other in the Wildcard game. I don’t think I like having multiple teams in the same league anymore. |

Now tied and going head-to-head with Red Storm in next series. They've been chasing me all season. But my failure to look ahead means they have 1-2-3 starters, while I have 3-4-5.

Interesting stat: across the entire league, the Hoggs have thrown the most innings, yet we do no have the most extra innings games...
Today was an 11-inning affair, which we managed to win 2-1. The win books our ticket to the postseason but the division title is still up for grabs!

The Hungry Hippos are limping to the finish line. They have a 2 game lead with 6 to play. They face the second place team in the division and the first place team in another division and based on the Pennant Chase screen will be facing multiple diamond pitchers.
I made a big change early in the day when I gave up on Albert Belle, my gold pull in my initial packs in favor of Will Clark. Belle was batting in the 220 range with only 18 HR in 145 games. Since slotted into the cleanup spot 11 games ago Clark is hitting .360 with 6 HR. Should be an exciting finish |
