Lahman DB missing a LOT of players

Hello all Just download the lahnam DB from their site, and I was shocked to find that it is missing a lot of players. As in anyone without a last name of S-V. Is this normal? Is there a complete DB?

Sounds like a bad download. Did you pull the csv version ot the Access version?

I pulled the csv version (57) earlier this month and they are all there. The file is in a very strange order however.

Tried it from three different sources, including the mans site itself with the exact same result. It's like the DB is just an update or something.

And grabbed both the csv and sql version with same results. I don't have access so no sense getting that version.

The order is alphabetical for players that debuted in seasons prior to 2002. From 2002 through 2009 though, it is ordered by debut date. This can be fixed in Excel by sorting by the players Lahman ID numbers. David Aardsma vaults to the top of the list and Dutch Zwilling remains on the bottom, with everyone in between in the order of their Lahman IDs. I think there should be 17,293 players in your database. If not, then like Bristolduke said, you've got a bad download and you need to give it another go.

Definitely try the sorting method mentioned above because this year's Lahman somehow starts with Dave Von Ohlen. In what universe does Dave Von Ohlen come first alphabetically?

I think you have the fill file.

It is NOT in alphabetical order Or ANY order.

But all the players are there.

The "order" is kind of reverse alphabetical from V to A. Then W to Z and again only for players pre-2002.

Then come the post 2002 players it looks like by year (2002-2009), but no alpha order.

Again if your master file has 17,468 rows, all the players are there.

Yes, that's what everybody got this year. It would appear Mr. Lahman woke up in some sort of bizarro world this year, where the alphabet ran from the middle of the Vs back through the As in reverse real world alphabetical order, picking up later with the rest of the Vs through Dutch Zwilling in real world alphabetical order and then onto the players that debuted from 2002 through 2009 in order of debut date.

If you wish to change this (and I can't see why you wouldn't because it's...well...bizarre), you must go into Excel or equivalent spreadsheet program, use the Data > Sort... function and pick which column you want to sort it by. I choose Column B, which is the LahmanID, but you can sort it by whatever category you wish to sort it by. It sounds like you want an alphabetical sort, so you probably want to sort first by Column R (Surname) and then by Column Q (First Name). I sort the Master file and the stats2 (neutralized batting, fielding, fieldingOF, and pitching stats files) in order of LahmanID, which is in Column B. I just find it makes editing these files a whole lot more simple, if they're all sorted in the same manner. Hope this helps, from your friendly fellow canuck.

Cheers

Random to all who look at it except Sean Lahman. To him it makes perfect sense. Ok, I'll stop ripping him now. He's contributed more to the game of baseball than I could contribute in 1,000 lifetimes. No need to apologize...unless of course you're a Canadian where it's a built in reflex.

Good to hear BD. Is this one gonna be similar to the v3 photos one with the photos for all players including a "Photo Not Available" for those without a photo to prevent the team logo or the dreaded blurry default player that shows up when there isn't a photo, as well as the Master? I'm really hoping we can get something standardized around here. The Swiss Cheese Master with the D/M/YYYY H/MM/SS date format was in a word horrendous. Thanks for your efforts.

Photos are the next step, master files are done. Covers all versions of OOTP from 2007 up. I'll post those today or tomorrow.
