when would you use shifts like with the outfield and also when wouod you shift the infield. I understand infield in and outfield in/out but when would you shift the outfield to the left or right? when would you guard the lines?when would you hav3 third in or first in? when would you deep shift right ot deep shift left? when would you guard the lines? answering these questions would really help me.

Shifts generally reflect whether the batter is expected to pull the ball; that is, to hit the ball in the direction of his swing. A left-handed pull hitter normally hits the ball to the right and a right-handed pull hitter hits it to the left.

If he hits ground balls a lot, or the pitcher is known to get a lot of ground balls, then the opposing team will shift the infield to where they expect him to hit it. If the batter is a power hitter, hits many fly balls, or the pitcher is known to get a lot of fly balls, then the opponents will shift the outfield. Maybe both.

Guarding the lines is different. In that situation, what the fielding team is trying to do is to prevent doubles (or triples) down the baselines. Instead, they would rather give up singles through the resulting wider 3B-SS or 1B-2B holes if they must. This is usually in a tight ballgame in later innings.

You said you understand infield/outfield positioned in or out. Basically, infield in is looking for a bunt or a play at home plate. Outfield in is looking to prevent a single from tying or winning the game whereas a double or triple over their heads will not make much difference. Again, for both, usually in a tight ballgame in later innings.

Third baseman or first baseman playing in is for situations where a bunt is expected. The fielding team is guessing and hoping that the batter doesn't actually swing away.

You could try using the option ‘let AI set initial defense’, see what it does

(and then change it when appropriate)
