Royals Split 2 Game Series with the Twins

April 29 ~ Twins 8 Royals 7:What a tough loss. Down 3 runs in the 9th, KC rallied to send the game into extra innings. Again, down 1 run in the 10th, KC was able to tie it up. Down 1 run in the 11th, and with the winning run on 2nd base, K. Ka'aihue struck out to complete a 0-6, 3 strikeout night. KC smacked 16 hits, led by Melky Cabrera's 3-5, 1 run, 4 rbi, 1 walk night. 6 other KC hitters had at least 2 hits. Taking the loss was J. Soria (0-2) who gave up 1 run on 1 hit in 1 1/3 innings. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Melky Cabrera for his 3-5, 4 rbi night.

April 30 ~ Royals 1 Twins 0: What a great pitching duel between KC pitcher M. Montgomery (2-2) and Twins pitcher Carl Pavano (3-2). Montgomery held the Twins to just 6 hits over 8 innings, allowing 0 runs and striking out 9 batters. J. Soria came in and pitched a perfect 9th, striking out 2 to earn his 8th save of the year. While KC was limited to just 5 hits, J. Arias went 2-3 (double and solo shot), with 1 run scored and 1 rbi. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to M. Montgomery who pitched 8 solid innings of 6 hit, shutout ball and finished with a game score of 75.

The Royals went 14-12 during the month of April, good enough for 1st place in the AL Central. With a team this young, and with so few "stars", there are bound to be a fair bit of ups and downs. The staff looks like it is coming around and the hitting has been fairly good. Hopefully we can stay in the hunt long enough to be an active buyer at the deadline. The Royals have some real promising talent in the minors and look forward to seeing them on the big league roster.

Season Record: 14-13 (1st Place)

NL ~ Atlanta Braves youngster Freddie Freeman took NL Rookie of the Month honors by hitting .290 with 27 hits, 3 homeruns, 11 RBI’s, 9 walks, and a .356 OBP.

The Mariners have a nice 1-2 combination going there with Hernandez and Pineda. They could be a serious force for years to come in this iOOTP league.

Indeed, he is going to cost some team a heck of lot more than what he signed for in this game!

Baltimore Thumps Royals, O's Take 3 of 4 From KC

May 2 ~ Baltimore 7 KC 5: Despite out hitting the O's 11 to 7, KC just could not pull this one out. Jeff Francis (1-3) took the loss in which he allowed 6 runs, 3 earned, struck out 6, and walked 2 over 6 2/3 innings. Billy Butler continues to pound the ball, going 3-5 with 2 runs, 3 rbi's, and a HR. The curse of J. Arias continues as he booted another ball, raising his season total to 12 errors on the year. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Butler for his outstanding hitting performance.

May 3 ~ Baltimore 3 KC 1: Despite out hitting the O's, and getting a solid outing from J. Bonderman (1-3), KC was not able to pull out the win. Bonderman went 7 1/3 innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 runs, 5 k's, and a gamescore of 63. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Bonderman because really, no one else was even close to deserving the award. This was one of those games where KC was in it, but you just knew that they would lose; a true lackluster effort by the team.

May 4 ~ Baltimore 6 KC 4: Not trying to sound like a broken record here, but J. Arais is killing me! With the scored tied 3-3 going into the top of the 9th inning, Arias booted one run into existence, though thankfully Jeff Francour was able to tie it up with his solo shot in the bottom of the 9th inning. So what does Arias do in the top of the 10th? He boots another ball which ultimately leads to 2 runs and the loss. Needless to say, I am shopping for a new position player, as that makes it 14 errors on the year for Arias. Wasted on the night was Jeff Francour’s 3-5, 2 run, 3rbi, 2 home run night. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Jeff Francour for his outstanding, but wasted, offensive explosion.

May 5 ~ KC 8 Baltimore 7:Surprise Surprise, Arias doesn't make an error and KC wins. Another extra innings affair saw KC smack 15 hits on the night, led by Escobar's 4-4, 2 runs, 1 rbi, 2 walks and Avilies' 3-6 1 run, 4 rbi's. Pitching was shaky, but a win is a win. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Escobar for his great night - 1.000 OBP is not too shabby!

So much for starting off May on the right note. The Baltimore series was just plan bad. Poor defense (curse you J. Arias), weak pitching, and limited hitting. Not the best combination to win games.

Season Record: 15-16 (2nd Place, 1 GB)

It really is a combination of the two. Regardless of whether I sim or play it out, I always carefully review each box score after the game so as to get a feel for what happened. I think that is what I love about baseball is that I can look at a box score and recreate what happened.

How about Patek at SS and Pedroia
At 2B. Short infield.
That is what I miss in this game is putting teams from different era's against each other.

That would be one very short double play combo!

A's Take 2 of 3, Harden Pitches No-Hitter

May 6 ~ Oakland 1 KC 0: In the matchup of two young guns, KC's M. Montgomery squared off against Oakland's Trevor Cahill. Despite outhitting the A's (6-4), having Montgomery putting up the better overall performance, and runners in scoring position in both the 8th and 9th innings, KC fell to the A's. Cahill (2-3) picked up the win by going 7 1/3 innings, scattered 4 hits, struck out 6, and finished with a game score of 73. Montgomery (2-3) took the loss despite going 8 1/3 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 run( 5th inning solo shot by Mark Ellis), 9 K's, and a game score of 76. KC was led on offensive by C. Getz who went 3-4 and Billy Butler 1-2 with 2 walks. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Montgomery for his strong outing.

May 7 ~ Oakland 9 KC 0: NO-HIT! No way to spin it, the Royals got worked. Rich Harden (2-2) twirled the 2nd No-No of the year, walking 3, striking out 8, facing 32 batters, throwing 127 pitches, and finishing with a game score of 90. Jeff Francis (1-4), despite taking the loss, pitched well going 7 innings, allowing 9 hits, 3 earned runs, and striking out 4. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game was not awarded tonight; hard to get excited about no-hit.

May 8 ~ KC 13 Oakland 3: Well, if there was any question on how the Royals would respond after getting no-hit last night, they put it soon to rest by scoring 4 runs in the 1st inning on their way to the easy win. KC smacked 14 hits on the day led by M. Avilies (3-5, 1 run, 1 rbi), Jeff Francoeur (2-5, 2 runs, 1 rbi, 1 HR), and Alex Gordon (2-5, 1 run, 4 rbi's, 1 triple, and 1 HR). Most impressive was the fact that the Royals had 11 extra base hits on the day. J. Bonderman (2-3) went 6 1/3 innings, 6 hits, 1 run, and 4 k's to get the win. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Alex Gordon, because when in doubt, go with the former Husker!

Season Record: 16-18 (3rd Place, 2 GB)

Bronx Bombers Bash KC, Take 2 of 3

May 10 ~ Yankees 6 KC 1: KC’s first season trip into Yankee Stadium did not start off on the right foot. Battling a serious case of food poisoning, Pitcher Jaime Moyer (2-2) only lasted 1 1/3 innings, allowing 4 hits, 5, runs, and a game score of 20. Picking up the win for the Yankees was Freddie Garcia (2-0) who pitched a CG, 2 hitter, striking out 5, and finishing with a game score of 79. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Taylor Teagarden for his 2-4 (double), 1 rbi day, 1 walk day.

May 11 ~ KC 15 Yankees 2: Baseball is a funny game. One day you can only squeak out 2 hits (yesterday) and then the very next day you pounded out 17 hits (today). KC hitters led the way with Arias (yes, Mr Error himself) going 5-5 with 2 runs, a steal, a HR, and 8 total bases; Melky Cabrera’s 2-4, 3 runs, 6 rbi’s, and 1 HR; and Alex Gordon’s 3-5, 3 run, 1 walk day. Picking up the win for KC was Davies (4-1) who went 7 innings, allowing 4 hits, 1 run, 4 k’s, and a game score of 62. Taking the loss for New York was Phil Hughes (3-3) who managed a game score of 9 for his 4 hit, 9 runs, 5 walks, 1 1/3 performance. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game was a tough one decide in light of the offensive onslaught, but voters ultimately decided that Melky Cabrera was most worthy.

May 12 ~ Yankees 4 KC 3: The rubber match of the series was a nail-bitter, as the teams were tied going into the 8th inning. Faced with runners in scoring position and 2 outs, a soft groundball hit to Arias proved the difference as (you guessed it) he booted (15th error of the year) the ball allowing the winning run to score. Taking the loss was J. Soria (0-3) and the win went to R. Soriano (3-0). Wasted on the day was the solid pitching performance of M. Montgomery who went 7 1/3 innings, allowing 3 earned runs, 7 k’s, and a game score of 66. Billy Butler provided the offense by going 1-3 with 1 HR, 3 RBI, and 1 walk. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game was a shared award between Butler and Montgomery.

Season Record: 17-20 (4th Place, 3 GB)

Royals Top Tigers, Take 2 of 3 From Detroit

May 13 ~ Detroit 5 KC 2: Facing off against the Tigers for the first time in Detroit, KC came out flat and just could not put together a rally when it had runners on base. P. Coke (7-1) took the win for the Tigers while Jeff Francis (1-5) was saddled with the loss. Francis went 5 1/3 innings, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 11 hits, while striking out 4. Despite having 8 hits on the day, the only KC batter with more than one was Jeff Francoeur who went 2-4 (double) with 1 run, 1 rbi, and 1 walk. Arias committed his league leading 16th error of the season. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game was a Jeff Francoeur.

May 14 ~ KC 12 Detroit 8: Nice bounce back win by the Royals as they smacked 12 hits, led by Taylor Teagarden’s 4-4 (double), 3 run, 2 rbi day. KC hitter Ka’aihue also had a nice day by going 1-3 (HR) with 2 runs scored, 3 rbi’s, and 2 walks. While the starting pitching was not very effective (Bonderman 4 2/3 ip, 7 hits, 6 runs, 5 k’s), the bullpen was able to keep things in check, led by A, Crow (2-0), Tejeda (2nd hold), and J. Soria (9th save). The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Teagarden for his 4-4 day.

May 15 ~ KC 9 Detroit 2: The crafty old lefty did it once again! Jaime Moyer (3-2) pitched 8 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits, walking 3, and striking out 5. Taking the loss was J. Verlander (1-7) who only lasted 3 2/3 before getting sent to the showers. Leading a balanced 13 hit attack was Alex Gordon (2-4 (HR), 2 runs, 2 rbi’s, and a walk), Maier (3-3, 1 run, 1 rbi, and 2 walks), and Ka’aihue (2-5 (double), 1 run, and 4 rbi’s). The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Moyer for strong outing.

Season Record: 19-21 (3rd Place, 2 GB)

Royals Split With Indians, Stay 3 Back in Race

May 16 ~ KC 2 Cleveland 1: A solid combined effort from 4 KC pitchers proved to be enough to get the win. While starter K. Davies did not figure into the decision, he did go 7 innings in which he allowed 5 hits, 1 run, and 7 k's. R. Tejeda (4-2) earned the victory for his perfect 8th, while J Soria earned his 10th save of the year. Taking the loss was Justin Masterson (4-4) who pitched a CG 5 hitter with 8 k's (game score of 71). Billy Butler went 2-4 (double) with a rbi. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to K. Davies.

May 17 ~ Cleveland 7 KC 4: Everything was setting up nicely for KC to gain its 4th win in a row and to climb back to .500, that is until Luke Hochevar decided to implode. Hochevar (1-2) lasted just 1/3 of an inning, allowing 3 hits, 4 runs (all earned), and 2 walks. Not only was M. Montgomery's start wasted, but Alex Gordon's 4-4 (2 home runs) 2 runs, and 4 rbi's was for naught. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Alex Gordon who is now batting .305 on the season.

Season Record: 20-22 (3rd Place, 3 GB)
