From The Winnipeg Free Press - December 1898....Fight cards in Halifax, Toronto, and Calgary showcase several young prospects like Bill Mackinnon, Frank Osborne, Charlie Fraser and Alberta provincial rivals Clonie McFadden and Gus Burill...At Halifax Arena fans get to see their boy James Burke in action, now campaigning as 'Sailor Burke' after fledgling promoter Willie MacLellan had noted a remarkable physical resemblance to the New York middleweight going by that nom de guerre...In the main event George Byers ends his storied career with a convincing decision over Montrealer Phil Miller...former Western Canadian champion George McRay gives the hometown cranks a happy ending to their evening at the fights with a one-sided stoppage of American journeyman Jimmy Danforth...Toronto's Johnny Jackson invades La Belle Province and upsets the huge French-Canadian Joe Montferrand in short order...Fight promoters and boxing clubs are scrambling to uncover a new headliner to challenge current Canadian champion Sam Langford but most have already fallen by the wayside or are just too green....As reporter Milt Dunnell of the Toronto Telegram sees it, "... Bob Day, Chummy Banks and Ross Delaney may have the punch but don't have the pugilistic skills to match the Nova Scotia battler and others like McRay and Jackson seem to lack the firepower to match Langford."...

From the Saturday sports section of The Los Angeles Herald....Jim Jeffries is declared the next mandatory challenger for world champion Jack Johnson by the IBU's championship committee following his lopsided victory over Sandy Ferguson of Canada....Ferguson later explained his poor performance was due to a broken left hand suffered in the third round...Johnson and Fireman Jim Flynn are in the final weeks of their training camps and visitors like James Corbett, Hank Griffin and Joe Choynski state both men are in absolute top fighting form...Flynn says he expects to enter the ring at between 190 and 195 while Johnson looks to tip the beam at just over 200 pounds...At New York's Pelican Arena an aggressive Marvin Hart won with relative ease over Gus Ruhlin who was almost out on his feet when the final bell rang...Lionel Butler came from behind to score a technical knockout over Ulysses Cannon at the Detroit Athletic Hall...Canadian heavyweight champion Sam Langford stopped Tom Sharkey at Brown's Arena, the end coming in the 8th round when the referee ignored Sharkey's corner and wrapped an arm around the bloodied sailor...Most at ringside conceded Langford could have knocked him out much sooner...At Newark, New Jersey Joe Jeannette knocked out Ray Mercer in five lightning fast rounds, sending him into early retirement ...Boston's Dan 'Porky' Flynn needed just five rounds to force a voluntary exit from the visiting Quaker Philadelphia Jack O'Brien who threw in the sponge after being put on the canvas at least once in every round....In a special twelve round elimination bout Down Under Australasian champ Billy McColl forced a stoppage of South Afrika's king Frans Botha halfway through the eleventh round and will advance to a fight with Empire champion Tommy Burns...Burns is set to defend his title this week against Fred Preston of Melbourne for a small purse and expenses...California's Sam McVea is expected to sail from New York for England and the continent on what his manager hopes will be a lucrative tour as his fighter has run out of willing opponents in America...In another battle of Chicago locals John Willie (193 1/2) managed a knockout of Klondike Haynes (176) at the Marathon A.C...

The February IBU Top Ten rankings from Mitt Slingers Magazine...Al Kaufman's drop from the third rung to number 8 after his unexpected loss to Mike Schreck in November allows Sam McVea to fill the spot behind Jeffries and Burns thanks to his win over Al Brown...The retirement of Bob Fitzsimmons shifts Sam Langford and Jim Flynn upwards while the Frenchman Raymond Berenger leaps over Schreck due to his decision over the latter in Montreal last September...At Melbourne Tommy Burns defended his Empire title with a technical knockout of Fred Preston in six rounds...Jack Johnson and Fireman Jim Flynn are in the process of closing their camps before heading to the weigh-in site at Fifth and Olive streets...Most of the best seats for the fight have been sold and it is expected few of the remaining 4,000 at Hazard's Pavilion will be empty come fight time...After much deliberation both camps have agreed on Ed Graney to officiate with his fee coming from a portion of the gate receipts...Johnson is said to have refused to go on before a $10,000 guarantee is deposited with his manager...Aside from his guarantee Johnson should take another 70% of the $15,000 purse as the odds-on favourite to win while Flynn will take home a cut of the gate receipts along with the loser's end of the purse...As we went to print Johnson was favoured at odds of up to 10 to 1 at some books despite Flynn's impressive record on paper...Only the most virulent anti-Johnson people give Flynn a puncher's chance due to his 16 kayo wins...

Clipped from The Pittsburgh Sentinel - February 1899....Jack Johnson's methodical dismantling of Fireman Jim Flynn is observed at ringside by Jim Jeffries after which Jeff pens an article that is carried by every major paper in North America...."...It was obvious from the opening round Flynn had no chance to defeat this fellow Johnson, and those behind the promotion of this debacle were only in it to sell the kinetoscope moving pictures to what they hope is a gullible public. A rematch with me will not sell because I will dispose of Johnson in quick order..."....The big Californian challenged the champion from ringside but only engendered a golden-tooth smile from "Li'l Artha"....Here at Turner's Hall Buffalo's Jim Fitzpatrick (194) knocked out Texas Bob Thompson (191) in four rounds setting up a meeting with the 'Georgia Thunderbolt' CC Smith who defeated Jim "Moose" Jeffords the other evening....

Denver Ed Martin joined Sam McVea in England and took part in a spectacular boxing carnival at London's National Sporting Club featuring a number of the top names in pugilism....the show was a success for the club but earned the American stars much less than they would have earned back home in New York or Los Angeles....Bill Squires defeated the number one contender for the European title in Raymond Berenger but was unable to secure a match with John L Gardner so elected to take ship back home to Australia to challenge Tommy Burns for his Empire title....Sid Russell decided to stay on when offered a bout with Norway's Bjarni Thorsen in Paris...

While most fight fans anxiously await the official announcement of Jack Johnson's much talked about return match with James Jeffries, the fight business is quiet in the big North American cities with talk of fights and cancellations....In Europe promoter Phillipe Roth arranges a fight for Raymond Berenger at the 12,000 seat Palais Grande but is informed by the IBU that Berenger is under a 60 day suspension following his knockout loss to Bill Squires in February....A proposed fight between Jack Scales and George Gardiner in Dublin is rescheduled twice before being cancelled due to a lack of finances on the part of the local sporting club...Belle Vue arena in Manchester is to be the site of a 10 round match between Joe Beckett 28-12-0 (22) and Scots-Canadian Jack Stewart 24-9-2 (19)....Other arranged contests include Denver Ed Martin 33-11-2 (19) Vs Ludwig Schuhmann 21-3-0 (1) in Berlin; Salinas Jack Burns 6-4-1 (4) Vs Sandy MacNab 12-0-1 (4) at Paisley, Scotland; Sid Russell 19-1-0 (13) Vs Bjarni Thorsen 18-1-0 (10) at Salle Wagram in Paris March 16; and Sam McVea 21-2-0 (16) Vs Italy's Roberto Damiani 35-14-0 (16) also at Salle Wagram on March 28th.....

Clipped from the latest issue of Mitt Slingers Magazine...Both Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries are already in fit condition when they start their training camps and will probably only require a few short weeks to attain top fighting trim...Johnson expects to enter the ring at 205 lbs while Jeff is said to be just ten pounds over his best fighting weight already...The Los Angeles Athletic Club and promoter Jim Coffroth leased a plot south east of the city and erected a temporary open air stadium capable of holding close to 20,000 spectators just for the fight....

April 24, 1899.....Postcards sold outside the stadium just prior to the fight...Since their previous match, which Jeffries claimed he had fought while recovering from the influenza, the Californian has stopped Sam McVea in 10 rounds, Denver Ed Martin in 4 rounds and Sandy Ferguson in 9 rounds....Johnson boxed a four round exhibition with Sam Berger, and defended his title twice, stopping Sandy Ferguson in 15 and clearly outpointing Fireman Jim Flynn....The evening before the fight, at the Cincinnati Opera House Sam Langford toyed with a flabby Mike Schreck before knocking him senseless in the eighth round to take the North American Boxing Federation title.....

Excerpt from The Buffalo Evening Courier Tuesday April 25, 1899...Jim Jeffries is in top fighting form entering the ring and tries his level best to take the fight to champion Jack Johnson but proves ineffective against the brilliant defence of his ever-smiling opponent and the underrated force of his stiff left jab....For his part Johnson is unimpressed with the strength and footwork of Jeffries remarking "...Jeff really only has one weapon. His right hand is no great threat. He relies on his left hook to the body and head. I rendered it almost useless in close and he had no answer to my straight left..."....Johnson then stated he planned on taking a long break from the ring after two hard battles pending approval from the IBU...Standing at ringside Al Kaufman congratulated Johnson and challenged Jack to defend against him before year's end....Referee Harry Stuart's scorecard was released to The Courier and showed Johnson winning ten rounds and Jeff only five.....As for Jeffries only a handful of friends and family accompanied him back to his dressing room where an IBU-supplied physician tended to his injuries....His trainer Bill Delaney told reporters Jeffries would talk to them tomorrow morning but bundled his charge up into a carriage and drove him to the Jeffries home near Burbank ....

An excerpt from the Washington DC Evening Star April 27 1899...Sam McVea is rampaging through Europe and few others present a serious threat to Johnson's reign besides these three....Kaufman appears to be favoured to be the first of the champion's challengers based on reports in Chicago papers while Burns, as champion of the British Empire, is considered a most worthy opponent should he decide to leave the pleasant confines of Australia for America.....As for Langford, Johnson considers him too small a fellow to take seriously unless he were able to scrape up a suitable guarantee and a promoter willing to put up a purse of no less than $30,000 and 75% of any gate receipts....

From The Barnsley Earwigger May 1899....John L Gardner defends his EBU title at the National Sporting Club against 39th ranked contender Sgt (Tom) Harris 5-32-1 much to the disgust of some club members and most of the assembled press....The IBU later instructs Gardner he must defend against the best available challenger in one month's time or be stripped of the belt....On the other side of the Thames, at Hollier's Gym, two highly ranked challengers Francois Marchand (20-9-1) and Bjarni Thorsen (18-2-0) meet to earn a crack at Gardner and the European championship....At the Salle Wagram in Paris, Australia's Sid Russell wins an unquestionable decision over the idol of France and No.1 European contender, Raymond Berenger, putting him down for nine counts twice...The following evening Denver Ed Martin of America gives a beating to Italy's Roberto Damiani before making him take the full count in round seven....At Caen Joe Beckett hands Deutschland's Ludwig Schuhmann his fourth consecutive defeat in less than a year....On the undercard Lucien Grognet (13st 8lb) takes the referee's nod over the new darling of Paris society Georges Carpentier (12st 7lb) after six rounds....At Limerick's Sporting Hall County Clare's own Petty Officer (Matty) Curran makes short work of Birmingham's Alf Greenfield in front of a mob of his shipmates....At almost the same moment over in London, William Ian Hague knocks out Dublin's Sean Casey sixty-three seconds into round one....

Clipping from The Toronto Telegram evening edition May 1899....(Pictured below clockwise: New Canadian heavyweight boxing champion Johnny Jackson of Toronto; former Canadian champion Sandy Ferguson; Bob Day noted contender; and Danny Whitebear a member of the Opaskwayak Cree fighting out of Winnipeg.) At Montreal's Delormier Stadium some 8,000 fans saw Johnny Jackson out-box a weary-looking Sandy Ferguson seven rounds to four and put the big man down twice, for counts of nine and three....Sam Langford, fresh off his capture of the North American Boxing Federation title belt was in the ring to present Jackson with the Canadian title belt....In the semi windup Danny Whitebear took a decisive win in ten over 'Gros Jos' Montferrand, putting him down for an eight count in the last minute of the last round....At Hamilton Arena Montreal's Art Beaudoin chalked up another win with a KO over local boy Frank Osborne....The rubber match between Ross Delaney and George McRay ended in disappointment for the 2,500 paying customers when McRay was disqualified by referee Cappy Smart after an obvious low blow...PEI's Bill MacKinnon lost a surprising decision to native Massachusetts son Charlie Haghey after six rounds in Boston, the decision being met with stunned silence....

From The New York Evening World June 24 1899...Stunning upset as former world champ James Jeffries is stopped in round eight by unranked New Jersey fighter Joe Jeannette...Jeff scores a knockdown in the third round but Jeannette's left jab opens a cut over Jeff's left eye in the next round...Jeffries forces the action but the cut is widened in round six and made even worse early in round eight to the point where Jeffries' face is covered with gore and he is having trouble seeing punches....Police at ringside order referee Johnny White to stop the fight ignoring protests from Jeff's corner....White declares Jeannette the winner improving his record to 14-0-1 (8)....An examination of White's scorecard showed Jeffries ahead prior to the stoppage 4 rounds to 3....Later Jeff claims he had not had proper time to train after recovering from his fight with Johnson but refuses to comment on accusations from his camp that Johnson's gloves were loaded...

From the June 1899 issue of Mitt Slingers Magazine [Published June 30 due to financial interruptions]....The IBU rankings are issued shortly before the magazine goes to print....Jim Jeffries supporters are incensed that their man has been dropped from the number one spot in favour of the little Canadian Tommy Burns and William Brady, Jeff's manager, threatens to bring suit against this magazine and the IBU and demands an immediate rematch with the Hoboken heavyweight Joe Jeannette...There is talk of a proposed match between Burns and his fellow Canadian Sam Langford but for the moment it is unconfirmed rumour as Burns has already signed contracts for two more fights in Australia one against Bill Squires and a possible return go with Australasian champion Billy McColl....From Brussels comes word the IBU dictates any gate receipts in which a top ten fighter is involved must be allotted as follows: A minimum of 10% to the number one challenger, 9% to the number two ranked challenger, 8% to the number three ranked challenger, and so forth, with the 10th ranked contender that month getting a minimum of 1% of any gate receipts to help cover expenses....It should be noted by American fight fans that seven of the top ten contenders and the champion himself are based in the USA....According to the rumour mill a number of prominent pugilists are currently contemplating retirement, chief amongst them Mike Schreck and Sandy Ferguson....World champion Jack Johnson has announced he and a consortium of Afro-American hoteliers have purchased hotels in Chicago, St Louis and New York, and due to this business venture, may not be available to defend his title and is considering taking a leave of absence from the ring....

From The Australian Star Sydney, NSW July 1899....Boxing before a large boisterous mob at the Old Tin Shed Tommy Burns and Bill Squires put on a slashing good biffo after a feeling out round....Squires surprised Burns with his newly acquired defence in round two and won it with several hard pokes to the face and a heavy hook to the ribs....The champion won rounds three and four with combinations to the body and short right hands to the head...the end came suddenly, 42 seconds into round five when Burns ducked under a looping right and came up with a left and right on the jaw...Billy McColl just didn't seem to have the will to fend off young Des Quinlan a second time in their third battle for the Australasian championship.....Referee Arthur Scott scored 8 of the 12 rounds for Quinlan and few could argue with the decision as he clearly won the last five in a row....In a preliminary Owen Sullivan needed only four rounds to dispose of visiting American Frank Craig who has clearly left his best years behind him....At Cape Town, South Afrika, Japie Smit (9-1-4) of Modderfontein loses on a foul in the third round of his first main event, disqualified by referee Abe Bailey for a low blow to veteran Fred McMullen...On the undercard Ron Anderson improves his record to 10-0-1 with a six round nod over Henry Bekker....In the co-feature Cape Town's Dave Bell knocks out JR Couper 35 seconds into round one....

Our friends at the venerable weekly British Boxing News have sent along a page announcing the latest British Empire heavyweight rankings according to the British Empire Boxing Council....There's the European champion John L Gardner way down at number 10 nudged out by a Scotsman....Sandy Ferguson would likely have been in the top five if he hadn't decided to retire a few weeks ago...No other English heavies in sight unless you include Gunner Moir and William "Iron" Hague who have yet to make their mark...Des Quinlan's win over Billy McColl and his regaining the Australasian title puts him in line for a shot at Empire champion Tommy Burns this year but his lack of marquee name recognition will have a negative impact on the purse and potential gate receipts though he has offered to put up a side wager of £200....
