I read this entire dynasty in about 4 days. It's intriguing and very well written. I immediately became a Queensland fan when you first profiled the different cities and ballparks. After pulling hard for them, I am super excited to see them vying for the pennant for the first time since the first season. Go Eagles, and congrats on a job well done!

Thank you so much for the kind words, hqbaseball!

I'm looking forward to seeing a 'changing of the guard' in the playoffs as well. Its time for some new faces in the United Cup (like Queensland)!

Queensland Eagles (86-68) vs. Brunswick Legends (82-72)
Season Matchup: 12-3 in favour of Queensland

Queensland: Runs scored – 682 (2nd); runs allowed – 642 (6th)
Brunswick: Runs scored – 600 (6th); runs allowed – 583 (1st)

A team making its first playoff appearance in 9 seasons and another returning after a one year absence face each other for the Eastern League title. The Eagles fell to the Wellington Athletics 4-2 in the inaugural Eastern Pennant final and have not come close to returning to the playoffs until this season. They have now enjoyed 5 consecutive winning seasons, but this is the first time they finished in top spot in a return to the playoffs.

Brunswick is no stranger to the post-season, as this will be their 6th appearance. In fact, they have yet to lose a Pennant Series. They have won 5 Pennants and 3 United Cups coming into this year’s playoffs. But they have not enjoyed very much success against the Eagles this season, losing 12 of 15 in their matchups. Will Queensland’s mastery over the Legends continue? Will this be the year Brunswick finally loses a Pennant matchup? Or will they discover that old playoff magic once again?

There are, of course, no easy answers to these questions. But there is one sure way of finding out. Let the games begin!

--------

Game 1

Wagner Stadium hosts Game 1 with 25,051 in attendance to see the two teams’ No. 1 starters square off. Partly cloudy skies, with a breeze blowing to left greet the teams.
RHP Aaron Saunderson (17-15, 3.54 ERA, 1.47 WHIP) starts for Queensland; LHP Anastasio Rodríquez (20-12, 2.42 ERA, 1.07 WHIP) takes the ball for Brunswick.

Bottom of the 1st:
The Eagles get on the board first. 2B Noah Wellings doubles with one out and advances to third on a RF Jilenko Vergara single. C Elijah Sheppard then follows with a single, scoring Wellings.
Brunswick 0 – Queensland 1

Top of the 8th:

Aaron Saunderson keeps the Legends off the board until the 8th inning. 3B Maluhia Mara smacks a first-pitch single with one out. After advancing to second base on a ground out by PH Louis Taylor, CF Lance Oakley follows with a triple to knot things up at 1 apiece.
Brunswick 1 – Queensland 1

Top of the 10th:

Some sloppy play undermines Saunderson’s tremendous effort. 2B Matthew Shelley leads off and reaches first base safely on an error (E5). After advancing to second on a sac bunt, PH Rob Renshaw is intentionally walked. Lance Oakley then flies out to centerfield, but a throwing error (E8) allows Shelley to score the go-ahead run. RF Mark Elston then draws a four-pitch walk to put runners on first and second.
The floodgates open as 1B Stuart Bentham singles, SS Jorge Arredondo doubles, LF Terry Aspden is given a free pass and C Maurice Evans singles. In all, Brunswick scores four more runs. Finally, Matthew Shelley, who led off the inning, ends it by grounding out to the first baseman.
Brunswick 6 – Queensland 1

Bottom of the 10th:

RP Ron Cowen pitches a perfect 10th inning, getting the Eagles to go down 1-2-3. Brunswick takes the first game of the series.
FINAL: Brunswick 6 – Queensland 1

Player of the Game: Despite the loss, Aaron Saunderson pitched a great game, going 10.0 innings, 8 H, 6 R, 1 ER, 6 BB, 7 K, 0.90 ERA

Noah Wellings (2-2, 1 R, 1-2B) was injured while running the bases in the 5th inning. He suffered a thigh cramp (day-to-day, 3 days), but is not expected to miss any action.

For Brunswick:

Anastasio Rodríquez went 7.0 IP, 11 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1.29 ERA

Luke Woodward picked up the win, going 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

--------

Game 2

After their heartbreaking extra inning loss in Game 1, Queensland looks to get on track and salvage a split before heading to Brunswick. 24,746 faithful return to see if the Eagles can do just that.
RHP Stewart Colcott (15-11, 3.35 ERA, 1.42 WHIP) gets the nod for Queensland, while LHP Hirotada Fukushima (13-5, 2.92 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) takes the hill for Brunswick. The game is played under partly cloudy skies with a stiff breeze blowing out to left.

Bottom of the 2nd:
Once again, Queensland gets on the board first. LF Ron Gavin and 1B Héctor Gutiérrez draw back-to-back walks with one out. SS Dermott Akers and CF Kunimichi Baba then slash out back-to-back singles, scoring Gavin. But Fukushima limits the damage, getting a strikeout and a 5-4 fielder’s choice to end the inning.
Brunswick 0 – Queensland 1

Top of the 4th:

Brunswick gets two baserunners on quick, thanks to a lead off single by Jorge Arredondo and a walk by Terry Aspden. Colcott gets the next two batters out, but a Maluhia Mara single drives in Arrendondo to tie up the game.
Brunswick 1 – Queensland 1

Top of the 5th:

Colcott induces back-to-back ground outs from Lance Oakley and Mark Elston to start the inning. But Stuart Bentham follows with a single. Next up is Jorge Arredondo who smashes Colcott’s first pitch for a 2-run home run into the left field bleachers, giving Brunswick the lead.

Brunswick 3 – Queensland 2

Bottom of the 7th:

Dermott Akers leads off and promptly reaches first base on an error (E5). Back-to-back singles by Kunimichi Baba and PH Javier Chávez score Akers, tying the game up.
3B Alexander Crutcher then doubles in Baba, giving the Eagles the lead. Next up is Noah Wellings, who singles in Chávez for Queensland’s fifth run. But Crutcher is thrown out when he tries for home and Fukushima gets the next two outs to staunch the bleeding.
Brunswick 3 – Queensland 5

Top of the 8th:

RHP Okura Suzuki takes over from Colcott, but gives up a lead-off triple by Matthew Shelley. With one out, PH Louis Taylor hits a sac fly to right field, scoring Shelley and getting Brunswick to within one.
Brunswick 4 – Queensland 5

Top of the 9th:

Stuart Bentham hits a first-pitch single with one out, then advances to second when Jorge Arredondo reaches safely on an error (E5). With two out, Maurice Evans slams a full-count 3-run home run off Suzuki, returning the lead to Brunswick.
Brunswick 7 – Queensland 5

Bottom of the 9th:

Facing RHP Luke Woodward, Noah Wellings reaches safely on an error (E6) with one out. Down to their final out, the Eagles manage to stay alive, as C Blake Nankervis draws a walk and Ron Gavin singles, loading the bases.
1B Fernando Gómez and PH Aaron Flanagan follow with back-to-back walks, forcing in two runs and tying the game.
That sets up CF Jon Moreau, who singles in Gavin for the winning run, ending a wild game and tying the series up at 1 apiece.
FINAL: Brunswick 7 – Queensland 8

Player of the Game: Kunimichi Baba goes 2-2 with 1 RBI, 2 R, 1 BB

--------

Game 3

The Series switches to familiar territory, as Babe Ruth Stadium is no stranger to playoff action. 27,379 take in the contest under beautiful, clear skies and a gentle breeze blowing out to right.
The two teams both turn to their Game 1 starters: LHP Anastasio Rodríquez for Brunswick; RHP Aaron Saunderson for Queensland.

Top of the 1st:
Queensland wastes no time as they load the bases with nobody out, thanks to a lead-off single by Alexander Crutcher, an error (E5) allowing Noah Wellings on base and a single by Jilenko Vergara.
Elijah Sheppard then follows with a sac fly, scoring Crutcher. With one out, Héctor Gutiérrez singles in Wellings for the Eagles second run.
Queensland 2 – Brunswick 0

Bottom of the 2nd:

Maurice Evans gets the Legends on the board with a one-run solo home run to left field.
Queensland 2 – Brunswick 1

Bottom of the 9th:

Saunderson and Rodríquez keep the hitters at bay until the bottom of the 9th, when Saunderson runs into trouble. After getting two quick ground outs to start the inning, Saunderson gives up a full-count walk to Terry Aspden and a single by Maurice Evans, putting runners on first and second. Matthew Shelley then comes through with a double. Aspden scores to tie the game, with Evans hot on his heels. Evans beats out the throw to home, scoring the winning run. The game ends in heart-breaking fashion once again for Queensland.
FINAL: Queensland 2 – Brunswick 3

Player of the Game: Anastasio Rodríquez goes 9.0 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K (1-0, 0.56 ERA) for the win.

Another valiant effort by Aaron Saunderson, as he goes 8.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 1 HR, (0-2, 1.93 ERA), but he gets stuck with his second tough loss of the playoffs.

--------

Game 4

A cold front descends upon the east coast, as Game 4 is played under cool, rainy skies. 27,340 fans brave the elements to see if the Legends can take a stranglehold on the series.
The pitching matchup is the same as in Game 2: Brunswick’s LHP Hirotada Fukushima facing Queensland’s RHP Stewart Colcott. Neither got the decision last time in a wild game won by the Eagles.

Following a 51-minute rain delay, Noah Wellings singles in Chávez, increasing the Eagles lead.

In the bottom of the 9th, LHP Roman Davis takes over from Colcott, getting the Legends to go down on a strikeout and two fly outs. Despite the sloppy play no doubt caused by the messy conditions, Queensland evens up the series at 2 games apiece.

Clear, sunny skies return to Babe Ruth Park for Game 5, with just a light breeze blowing out to right. 27,292 are in attendance to witness the rubber match and to see who will take the upper hand in the series before it returns to Queensland for Game 6.

32-year old LHP Wilson Villas (11-11, 2.95 ERA, 1.29 WHIP), a native of Queensland, takes the hill for Brunswick in his first post-season appearance. The Eagles respond with 30-year old RHP Pi-ao Quian (15-13, 3.98 ERA, 1.48 WHIP), who is also appearing in the playoffs for the first time.

Bottom of the 4th:

Maurice Evans, Matthew Shelley and Maluhia Mara all follow with consecutive singles, scoring three runs.
Queensland 0 – Brunswick 3

Queensland 0 – Brunswick 4

Top of the 7th:

Wilson Villas suffers an injury after just 3 innings, so RHP Nelson Wigley, RHP Morgan Tice and RHP Ron Cowan all take turns on the mound in relief.
Facing Cowan, Pi-ao Quian leads off with a single. Noah Wellings then advances him to second with a one-out single and Jilenko Vergara draws a walk to load the bases.
Elijah Sheppard singles in Quian for Queensland’s first run, but a fielder’s choice and a fly out end the Eagles’ rally before it really starts.

In the top of the 9th, Cowan get the Eagles to go down in order, giving Brunswick the upper hand in the series.
Final: Queensland 1 – Brunswick 4

Brunswick 1 – Queensland 3

Game 7

For six straight games, the Brunswick Legends and the Queensland Eagles have battled back and forth, with no team winning consecutive games in the series. Now the stage is set for a ‘winner take all’ Game 7 in Queensland. The weather will not be factor, as the skies are partly cloudy and a slight breeze blowing out to left field. 24,994 are in the stands, seeing whether the Eagles can ‘buck the trend’ and win a second consecutive game to win their first Pennant.

Queensland’s RHP Stewart Colcott and Brunswick’s LHP Hirotada Fukushima, who faced each other in Games 2 and 4, square off in the deciding final game. Neither got the decision in Game 2, while Colcott won Game 4.

Bottom of the 2nd:

Queensland loads the bases when Héctor Gutiérrez and Dermott Akers lead off with back-to-back singles and Kunimichi Baba draws a walk off Fukushima.
With two out, Noah Wellings draws another walk to force in Gutiérrez for the Eagles’ second run.
Brunswick 0 – Queensland 2

Bottom of the 5th:

Noah Wellings leads off with a single and steals 2B before Jilenko Vergara draws a walk. Elijah Sheppard then smacks Fukushima’s first pitch into centerfield for a two-run triple.
After Héctor Gutiérrez is intentionally walked with one out, Kunimichi Baba singles with two out, driving in Sheppard for the Eagles’ fifth run.

Looking to finish what he started, Colcott, in the bottom of the 9th, gets Mark Elston to fly out to centerfield. Then, both Stuart Bentham and Jorge Arredondo hit into 5-3 groundouts to end the game and the series. Colcott gets his complete game shut-out and gives Queensland its first Pennant in team history.

Kunimichi Baba goes 2 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 BB

April 2, 1947

Kingston Pelicans (96-58) vs. Wolseley Unions (89-65)
Season Matchup: 8-8

Kingston: Runs scored – 689 (1st); runs allowed – 526 (1st)
Wolseley: Runs scored – 682 (2nd); runs allowed – 586 (5th)

This year’s Western League Pennant pits a team making the playoffs for the first time against a team that is no stranger to the post-season. The Wolseley Unions spent its first seven seasons producing one losing record after another. That changed in 1944-45, when they finished at 77-77. Last season, they achieved their first winning record with a 79-75 mark and reached 3rd place, their best finish up to that point. This year, they finally got over the hump as it were, and qualified for the playoffs.

But they will be facing a team that is making its 10th consecutive appearance in the post-season. The Kingston Pelicans have won an incredible seven Pennants and three United Cups. They have represented the Western League in the United Cup for the past four seasons. Boasting the best record in the ULB and blessed with an incredibly balanced team, they must be considered as heavy favourites to represent the West for the fifth straight year.

But Wolseley proved to be a tough customer for Kingston this season, battling them to a draw in their season matchup. So, nothing can be taken for granted. In a short series, anything can happen. It’s time to play ball!

--------

Game 1

Kingston Park, as it has so many times before, hosts the first two game of the series. 25,362 will enjoy the game under beautiful, clear skies, with just a slight southern breeze blowing in from leftfield.
27-year old LHP Patrick Denman (20-12, 2.92 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) takes the hill for Kingston, while Wolseley matches with their ace, 23-year old RHP Jeremy Albury (17-16, 2.91 ERA, 1.20 WHIP).

Top of the 2nd:

Wolseley 2 – Kingston 0

Top of the 4th:

1B Craig Aiton leads off and reaches base safely on an error (E6). After advancing to 2B on a Jeremy Albury sac bunt, Zak Kidd hits his second two-run home run of the game, 338 ft. to leftfield.
C Éric Denis promptly follows him with a double and scores the Unions’ fifth run when LF Carlton Hawking singles him home.
Wolseley 5 – Kingston 0

Bottom of the 4th:

Kingston gets on the board when LF Lance Haworth, C Danny Trowbridge and SS Katsunan Chikafuji all hit consecutive singles, driving in a run with one out.
Wolseley 5 – Kingston 1

Top of the 6th:

After Zak Kidd draws a walk with one out, Éric Denis smacks his second double of the game, scoring Kidd. Kingston elects to intentionally walk Carlton Hawking, but SS George Kimpton follows with a double, scoring Denis. That ends Denman’s day. He is replaced by RHP Francis Slocock. But after RF Rizalino Ringor flies out to centerfield, 2B Burt Willey singles in both Hawking and Kimpton for the inning’s third and fourth runs.
Wolseley 9 – Kingston 1

Bottom of the 7th:

With one out, 3B George Morven cranks out a first-pitch triple. Morven comes in to score when RF Luca Bewick reaches safely on an error (E5).

In the bottom of the 9th, Jeremy Albury gets two quick outs before PH Chong-sik Lee reaches safely on an error (E6). But Luca Bewick flies out to leftfield to end the game.
The Unions take Game 1 of the series in convincing fashion, right in Kingston’s own back yard.
FINAL: Wolseley 9 – Kingston 2

Player of the Game: Zak Kidd, who has been with the Unions since Day 1, had a huge game in his first post-season appearance, going 2-3 with 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 R, 2 BB

The Pelicans were given a rude wake-up call in Game 1, as the Unions roughed them up handily. 25,489 Pelican fans return for Game 2 to see how their ballclub will respond.

Wolseley 4 – Kingston 3

Bottom of the 5th:

Luca Bewick ties things up with a two-out solo home run to left-centerfield.

In the top of the 9th, Currall gives up a 4-pitch walk to PH Octávio León with one out. After getting Zak Kidd to pop-up (F5), Currall is replaced by RHP Luis Veláquez, who strikes out Éric Denis for the final out.

Game 3

Satchel Paige Park witnesses playoff action for the very first time, as it hosts Game 3. 25,069 pack the Stadium to see whether the Unions can grab the momentum back from the Pelicans. The skies are partly cloudy with a light breeze blowing out to right.
Both Game 1 starters get the call again: RHP Jeremy Albury for Wolseley; LHP Patrick Denman for Kingston.

Bottom of the 2nd:
Rizalino Ringor and Burt Willey lead off with back-to-back singles, putting runners on the corners. A passed ball scores Ringor and advances Willey to 2B. 3B Vincent Colón then singles in Willey for Wolseley’s second run.

That sends SP Denman to the showers early for the second time in the series.

In the top of the 9th, C Danny Trowbridge leads off with a single, but Katsunan Chikafuji hits into a 5-4-3 double play. A fired-up SP Albury then gets 1B Dean Bishop to strike out swinging on a full count to end the game, giving the Unions a 2-1 lead in the series.
FINAL: Kingston 1 – Wolseley 7

Player of the Game: Jeremy Albury goes the distance for the second time in the series, with a line of 9.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K (2-0, 1.00 ERA)

For Kingston:

Patrick Denman has another rough outing, going only 4.1 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, (0-2, 13.97 ERA)

--------

Game 4

Outscored 20-8 in the first three games of the series, the Kingston Pelicans look to regroup for Game 4 to try and even the series. The weather won’t be a factor – warm, sunny skies and a gentle breeze blowing from left to right add up to a perfect afternoon for baseball. And 25,156 are in the stands to enjoy it.
As they did in Game 2, Wolseley’s RHP Kai Tosh will square off against Kingston’s RHP Ben Currall.

Top of the 2nd:
Katsunan Chikafuji leads off with a triple and scores on a Dean Bishop ground out to open the scoring for Kingston.
Kingston 1 – Wolseley 0

Éric Denis and Carlton Hawking draw back-to-back walks with one out. Rizalino Ringor then singles, scoring Denis, giving Wolseley the lead. After Burt Willey draws a walk to load the bases with two out, Joey Phinney singles in Hawking, extending the Unions’ lead.
Kingston 1 – Wolseley 3

Bottom of the 4th:

SP Tosh leads off with a walk and reaches 2B on a ground out with two out. Wolseley then roughs up SP Currall. Carlton Hawking and Rizalino Ringor bang out back-to-back doubles, followed by George Kimpton and Burt Willey, who hit back-to-back singles. In the process, Wolseley score three more runs, doubling their lead.
Kingston 1 – Wolseley 6

Top of the 8th:

Kingston adds a second run when Lance Haworth singles with two out. Haworth promptly scores when Danny Trowbridge follows him with a double.

In the top of the 9th, SP Tosh finishes things off by striking out both Dean Bishop and Wen-huan Liu, then induces a 5-3 ground out from Ricardo Ruíz to end the game, giving the Unions a commanding 3-1 lead in the series.
Final: Kingston 2 – Wolseley 6

Player of the Game: Kai Tosh pitches an outstanding game, going the distance. His line: 9.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K (1-1, 3.71 ERA)

Rizalino Ringor goes 2-4, 1-2B, 2 RBI, 1 R.

For Kingston:

A Kingston pitcher gets knocked out early for the second straight game. Ben Currall goes just 4.0 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 5 BB, 2 K (1-1, 7.11 ERA)

--------

Game 5

A stunned Kingston team and a confident Wolseley unit meet for the third straight game at Satchel Paige Park. The Unions have dominated the Pelicans on both sides of the ball, outscoring Kingston by an incredible 26 to 10 mark thus far. Kingston now faces the prospect of having to run the table if they hope to keep their Pennant hopes alive. Meanwhile, Wolseley is looking to end things here and now – and save themselves a trip back to Kingston.
The weather has cooled off just a little, but partly cloudy skies and a light breeze that continues to blow in from left to right sets the scene as 25,345 faithful arrive to see if the Unions can pull off the upset.

29-year old RHP Hun Park (11-12, 3.77 ERA, 1.49 WHIP), makes his first start in the post-season for Wolseley, while 29-year old RHP Charlie Gilbert (19-7, 2.36 ERA, 1.27 WHIP) looks to reverse Kingston’s fortunes in the series.

Bottom of the 3rd:
The game remains scoreless until the third inning, when Zak Kidd smacks a two-out double to left-centerfield. However, Kidd injures himself while running the bases and is replaced by PR Glen Traill. Éric Denis follows with a single, scoring Traill.
Kingston 0 – Wolseley 1

Top of the 5th:

Kingston ties the game up when Luca Bewick singles with one out, then scores on Lance Haworth’s double. Danny Trowbridge immediately follows with a single, scoring Haworth and giving Kingston the lead.
Kingston 2 – Wolseley 1

Bottom of the 6th:

Carlton Hawking smacks a first-pitch single with one out, but is thrown out as 2B when Rizalino Ringor hits into a 4-6 fielder’s choice. But both George Kimpton and Burt Willey come through with back-to-back singles, scoring Ringor and tying the game.
After Joey Phinney is intentional walked to load the bases, Vincent Colón hits the fourth single of the inning, scoring both Kimpton and Willey for a 2-run lead.
Kingston 2 – Wolseley 4

Top of the 9th:

RHP Ross New, who relieved SP Park to start the 7th inning, comes into the 9th with a chance to wrap up the Pennant for Wolseley.
But Ricardo Ruíz leads off with a single, then advances to 2B when Chong-sik Lee reaches safely on an error (E6) with one out. After striking out Luca Bewick for the second out, PH Jamie Wilday singles in Ruíz to get the Pelicans to within one.
But New gets Danny Trowbridge to fly out to centerfield to end the threat, the game and the series. Wolseley wins the series in impressive fashion to earn its first Pennant in franchise history.
FINAL: Kingston 3 – Wolseley 4

Player of the Game: Hun Park receives the game honours, going 6.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K (1.0, 3.00 ERA)

Carlton Hawking goes 4-4, with 1-3B, 1-2B.

Wolseley received some unfortunate news shortly after the series concluded, when it was learned that lead-off hitter Zak Kidd strained a rib cage muscle and will not be available to play in the United Cup.

For Kingston:

Charlie Gilbert put up a valiant effort, but it wasn’t enough to keep Kingston’s playoff hopes alive. He went 7.2 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K (0-1, 4.70 ERA)

Ahh, you never know. If the series goes 6-7 games, Kidd could possible come in as a DH.

If the trainer slips Kidd a few shots of Okolehao, Kidd won't feel anything especially his rib cage!

April 12, 1947

Queensland Eagles (86-68) vs. Wolseley Unions (89-65)
Season Matchup: 3-3

Queensland: Runs scored – 682 (2nd); runs allowed – 642 (6th)
Wolseley: Runs scored – 682 (2nd); runs allowed – 586 (5th)

For the first time since the 1939-40 season, the playoffs see two teams making their first appearance in the United Cup. Prior to this season, the Queensland Eagles and Wolseley Unions had just one brief playoff appearance between them (Queensland in 1937-38). But both defeated previous Cup champions to get here.

Queensland had to go the distance to knock off the Brunswick Legends, a series that included two extra-inning matches. Meanwhile, the Wolseley Unions made relatively quick work of the Kingston Pelicans and will be much more rested for Game 1. Will fatigue be a factor for Queensland?

However, the Unions are dealing with a bit of adversity as well. Team icon and lead-off hitter, 28-year old CF Zak Kidd (.275/.348/.484, 12 HR, 48 RBI, 29 BB, 9 SB, 2.5 WAR), who smashed three home runs in the Western League Pennant Series, strained a rib cage muscle in the final game against the Pelicans and will be out for at least another week. Thus, it is highly unlikely he will see any action in the United Cup. That deals a tough blow to the Unions.

25-year old CF Glen Traill (.231/.327/.316, 2 HR, 35 RBI, 49 BB, 5 SB, 1.1 WAR), who was an 8th overall pick from 1942-43, will take his place in the lineup, with 24-year old RF Rizalino Ringor (.246/.371/.319, 6 HR, 49 RBI, 101 BB, 14 SB, 2.5 WAR) moving into the leadoff spot.

So how the teams’ respective managers adjust to these challenges may mean the difference in who wins the ultimate prize. Queensland’s field manager, 58-year old Reid Saxby and Wolseley’s manager, 48-year old Tony Fay, have been at the helm of their respective clubs since the first game of the ULB’s inaugural season. One of them will finally see all their years of toil pay off. But enough yapping - it’s off to the ballpark!

--------

Game 1

Queensland’s Wagner Stadium hosts the opening game of the United Cup. Clear skies, warm sunshine and a light breeze blowing out to left set the perfect stage for Braeland’s premier sporting event. 25,206 are on hand to cheer the Eagles on.
27-year old RHP Aaron Saunderson (17-15, 3.54 ERA, 1.47 WHIP) starts for Queensland, while 23-year old RHP Jeremy Albury (17-16, 2.91 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) takes the hill for Wolseley.

Top of the 1st:
The Unions waste no time getting on the board. 3B Burt Willey and LF Carlton Hawking bang out back-to-back singles with one out. Both come home for the game’s first two runs when SS George Kimpton line-drives a first-pitch double into right-centerfield. After C Éric Denis strikes out, 1B Joey Phinney singles in Kimpton and its 3-0 Wolseley before Queensland has a chance to respond.
Wolseley 3 – Queensland 0

Top of the 3rd:

Burt Willey leads off with a triple. With one out, George Kimpton draws a 4-pitch walk. Éric Denis then smacks a first-pitch double, scoring Willey and moving Kimpton to 3B. Kimpton adds to the Unions’ lead when he comes home on a Joey Phinney 4-3 ground out.
Wolseley 5 – Queensland 0

Bottom of the 3rd:

3B Alexander Crutcher doubles with one out and reaches 3B when 2B Noah Wellings follows with a first-pitch single. Next up is RF Jilenko Vergara, who singles in Crutcher and advances Wellings to 3B. But LF Ron Gavin lines into a 6-5 double play to snuff out the rally.

In the bottom of the 9th, SP Albury gets PH Héctor García to popup (F4) and Alexander Crutcher to ground out. Noah Wellings then draws a walk. But Jilenko Vergara strikes out swinging to end the game. Wolseley takes Game 1.
FINAL: Wolseley 5 – Queensland 1

Player of the Game: Jeremey Albury continues undefeated in the playoffs, going 9.0 IP, 13 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K (3-0, 1.00 ERA)

George Kimpton goes 2-3, 2-2B, 2 RBI, 2 R, 1 BB.

For Queensland:

Jilenko Vergara goes 4-5, 1 RBI

--------

Game 2

The day is a carbon copy of yesterday, so weather will not be a factor. 24,994 return to Wagner Stadium to see if their Eagles can bounce back.
39-year old RHP Stewart Colcott (15-11, 3.35 ERA, 1.42 WHIP) starts Game 2 for Queensland, while 28-year old RHP Kai Tosh (18-8, 2.79 ERA, 1.11 WHIP) gets the call for Wolseley.

Wolseley 1 – Queensland 4

Top of the 2nd:

3B Vincent Colón and Glen Traill lead off with back-to-back singles. Kai Tosh lays down a sac bunt, advancing the runners. A Rizalino Ringor sac fly and a Burt Willey single score Colón and Traill to get Wolseley to within one.
Wolseley 3 – Queensland 4

Top of the 3rd:

George Kimpton leads off with a single. Joey Phinney then singles with one out, putting runners on the corners. Kimpton comes in to tie the game when Vincent Colón hits into a 6-4 fielder’s choice.
Wolseley 4 – Queensland 4

Bottom of the 5th:

Noah Wellings smacks a first-pitch triple with one out. After Jilenko Vergara draws a four-pitch walk, Wellings returns the lead to Queensland when he scores on a 3-6 fielder’s choice by Ron Gavin.
Héctor Gutiérrez strikes out looking to end the inning, but is tossed from the game when he argues too vehemently over the call. Javier Chávez comes in to replace him at 1B.
Wolseley 4 – Queensland 5

Bottom of the 6th:

SP Tosh runs into trouble in the 6th. SS Dermott Akers leads off with a single, advances to 2B on a wild pitch and then to 3B on a ground out. But with two out, Alexander Crutcher and Noah Wellings hit back-to-back doubles, scoring two runs.
That ends Tosh’s day. RHP Shaun Alford relieves him, but a walk by Jilenko Vergara and a double by Ron Gavin scores Queensland third run before the inning is over.

In the top of the 9th, LHP Roman Davis gets the Unions to go down in order, tying the series up at one.
FINAL: Wolseley 4 – Queensland 8

Player of the Game: Noah Wellings went 3-5 with 1-2B, 1-3B, 1 RBI, 3 R

Héctor Gutiérrez went 1-3 with 1 HR, 3 RBI and 1 R before being ejected in the 5th inning.

Stewart Colcott picks up his third win of the post-season, going 7.0 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K (3-0, 2.61 ERA)

For Wolseley:

Kia Tosh lasts just 5.2 IP, with 8 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HR (1-2, 5.96 ERA)

George Kimpton went 3-4, 1 R.

--------

Game 3

Satchel Paige Park takes its first turn hosting the United Cup, which it will do so for the next three games. 25,404 Union faithful pack the stadium. The skies are partly cloudy with just a light breeze blowing out to right.
The starting pitchers of Game 1 return: RHP Jeremy Albury for Wolseley; RHP Aaron Saunderson for Queensland.

Top of the 6th:
The game remains scoreless until the 6th. SP Albury strikes out both Alexander Crutcher and Noah Wellings to start the inning, but Jilenko Vergara and Ron Gavin then bang out back-to-back doubles, putting Queensland on the board.
Queensland 1 – Wolseley 0

Bottom of the 7th:

Glen Traill goes 3-4, 1-2B, 1 RBI, 1 R

The Unions lose another player to injury: 3B Vincent Colón injured himself while fielding a ground ball in the 3rd inning. He was diagnosed with a deep elbow bruise and could be out for 1-2 weeks. Burt Willey moves to 3B to take his place, while 22-year old Westin Woollams (.198/.276/.224, 1 HR, 30 RBI, 33 R, 5 SB, -0.4 WAR) will start at 2B and lead off for Game 4.

--------

Game 4

A record crowd of 30,065 pack Satchel Paige Park to see if the hometown Unions can even up the series after losing in heartbreaking fashion the day before. A cloudless sky and a light breeze blowing in from left to right sets the scene.
The Game 2 starters square off again this afternoon: Wolseley’s RHP Kai Tosh against Queensland’s RHP Stewart Colcott.

Game 5

The weather has cooled off just a bit, but not as much as the Unions have done since Game 1 of Series. 29,864 return hoping against hope that the Unions can stave off elimination. Wolseley’s 29-year old RHP Hun Park (11-12, 3.77 ERA, 1.49 WHIP) makes his second start in the post-season. Ha! Good one! I am excited to see the Eagles win it all.

I thought the Unions would have been at a disadvantage due to injuries, but both CF Glen Traill (.375/.375/.417) and 2B Westin Woollams (.357/.357/.357) didn't hurt the team as fill-ins.

What was frustrating in watching the games, was Wolseley's penchant for wasting outs - getting a runner on 1B, sacrificing them over to 2B and 3B, then flying out to end the inning with no runs scored. This happened game in and game out. Sometimes you just have to trust your players and let them swing away and drive in those runs. Wolseley didn't do that very much and I think it hurt them.

I'll be off the grid for about a week for some vacation. Then I have to start thinking about importing the League into OOTP18 (after the rest of the awards are handed out) and then start making selections for the HOF before Opening Day 1947. So it might be quiet around here again as I sort things out.

1946-47 United Leagues of Braeland Awards

Eastern League

Babe Ruth Award

He may not have led the East in any offensive categories, but that did not prevent Queensland’s 28-year old C Elijah Sheppard from capturing this season’s Babe Ruth Award, the first of his career. The four-time all-star and former Rookie of the Year Award winner was remarkably consistent throughout the season for the Eagles and finished in the Top 10 in 13 offensive categories.

Both runners-up were previous award winners:

2nd: Brunswick's 1B Stuart Bentham (.314/.403/.500, 24 HR, 72 RBI, 5.2 WAR) finished runner-up for the second year in a row.
3rd: Embro's 1B Jim Friend (.322/.405/.550, 23 HR, 97 RBI, 5.8 WAR)

Stuart Bentham led the East in PA (684), R (97) and HR (24).

Jim Friend led the circuit in RBI (97), SLG (.550) and OPS (.955).

Satchel Paige Award

No suspense this season, as Wellington’s LHP Arthur Bence captured his first Satchel Paige Award on the strength of his triple-crown performance. The 27-year old previous best was last season, when he went 14-11, 3.91 ERA, 1.42 WHIP with the Sherburn Tigers.

A pair of Legends were also in the running:

2nd: Brunswick's LHP Anastasio Rodríguez (20-12, 2.42 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 2.63 FIP)
3rd: Brunswick's LHP Hirotada Fukushima (13-5, 2.92 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 2.52 FIP)

Bence led the League in wins (22), ERA (1.93), GS (35), K (142), H/9 (7.47) and OAVG (.221). He tied with three others for most shutouts (5).

Rodríguez led the East in BB/9 (1.70), K/BB (2.56), WHIP (1.07) and WAR (7.4).

Fukushima led in HR/9 (0.16), K/9 (5.13) and FIP (2.52).

25-year old LF Ron Gavin accomplished a lot in his first full big-league season. He won a United Cup with the Queensland Eagles and earned United Cup MVP honours to boot. Now he can add a Rookie of the Year Award to his mantelpiece as well. He becomes the third Eagles rookie to win the award.

Here were the runners-up:

2nd: Embro's LF José Maldonado (.268/.358/.440, 5 HR, 36 RBI, 2.3 WAR)

1940-41: Steven Winstanley, Hespeler Stars
1941-42: Jayden Tennant, Kingston Pelicans

1944-45: Carlton Broadbent, Balmoral Giants

--------

Satchel Paige Award

Last season he was runner-up, but this year 23-year old RHP Jesús Chapa took top honours as the best pitcher in the West.

Two Pelicans, including last year’s winner, were runner-ups:

2nd: Kingston's RHP Ben Currall (20-7, 2.19 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 3.01 FIP). Incidentally, Currall also went 20-7 last season.
3rd: Kingston's LHP Patrick Denman (20-12, 2.92 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 2.75 FIP).

Chapa led the West in ERA (2.13), WHIP (1.02), FIP (2.46) and WAR (8.2).

Denman led in IP (296.0).

Both Currall and Denman tied for the lead in wins (20) and shutouts (6).

Previous Winners:

1937-38: Neil Guerin, Cambria Cannons
1938-39: Brady Murdy, Kingston Pelicans

1942-43: Joey Cumberledge, Kingston Pelicans
1943-44: Francis Slocock, Kingston Pelicans
1944-45: Roberto Taváres, Sherburn Tigers
1945-46: Patrick Denman, Kingston Pelicans

--------

Rookie of the Year Award

This past United Cup Series became the first to feature both Rookie of the Year Award winners when Queensland’s Ron Gavin won it in the East and Wolseley’s 22-year old C Éric Denis took the trophy in the West. Interestingly, Denis was drafted 12th overall back in 1943-44 by the Queensland Eagles. He was traded to Wolseley back in May 1944 – along with SP Jeremy Albury – for SP Aaron Saunderson. I guess that exchange paid off for both teams, as all those players played an important role in helping their respective clubs reach the finals.

The runners-up for the Rookie Award were:

2nd: Wolseley’s 2B Burt Willey (.305/.368/.385, 4 HR, 43 RBI, 3.9 WAR)
3rd: Kingston's RF Luca Bewick (.298/.384/.436, 7 HR, 35 RBI, 2.5 WAR)

Previous Winners:

1938-39: Aaron Flanagan, Wolseley Unions
1939-40: Francisco Rodríguez, Balmoral Giants
1940-41: Leon Hankey, Cambria Cannons
1941-42: Brian Pittman, Balmoral Giants
1942-43: Freddie Duran, Kingston Pelicans
1943-44: Rizalino Ringor, Wolseley Unions
1944-45: Hao Wang, Cambria Cannons
1945-46: Ben Currall, Kingston Pelicans

--------

Manager of the Year Award

A first-place finish and a playoff appearance – their first in nine seasons – earned Queensland’s 58-year old manager Reid Saxby his first Manager of the Year award. He is currently third among field managers for wins with 793, behind Stratford’s Bill Quinn (847) and Cambria’s Eddie Frierson (813). While Saxby’s managerial style is unorthodox, he nevertheless has a good reputation and is one of the most respected managers in the ULB.

43-year old Ben Houchens has a penchant for upstaging his team at times with his profane outbursts and fiery disposition in the heat of battle, but there is no doubting the results, at least in the regular season. In leading the Pelicans to 96 victories, the best in the ULB, and a fifth straight playoff appearance, Houchens becomes the first United Leagues manager to win four Manager of the Year Awards, breaking a tie with Stratford’s Bill Quinn.

Previous Winners:

1937-38: Bradley Balmforth, Wellington Athletics; Rouke Barclay, Sherburn Tigers
1938-39: Vic Windle, Embro Suns; John Permenter, Kingston Pelicans
1939-40: Warren Paulino, Braeland City Monarchs; Eddie Frierson, Cambria Cannons
1940-41: Bill Quinn, Stratford Barons; John Permenter, Kingston Pelicans
1941-42: Babe Ruth, Brunswick Legends; Eddie Frierson, Cambria Cannons
1942-43: Wesley Leseberg, Brunswick Legends; Ben Houchens, Kingston Pelican
1943-44: Bill Quinn, Stratford Barons; Ben Houchens, Kingston Pelicans
1944-45: Wesley Leseberg, Brunswick Legends; Ben Houchens, Kingston Pelicans
1945-46: Bill Quinn, Stratford Barons; Bradley Balmforth, Sherburn Tigers

New Records Set

Five new records – all pitching marks – were set during the 1946-47 season:

SP Arthur Bence set a new mark for ERA (1.929), surpassing Braeland City’s David Cooling (2.023 ERA in 1940-41).

Embro’s RHP Colm Soper (5-5, 1.85 ERA, 1.06 WHIP in 82.2 IP) set a new mark for saves in a season, with 24. That surpasses the old mark of 21, set by Cobourg’s Quentin Teague (then with Cambria) back in 1939-40. Saves are definitely on the rise in the ULB; following Soper’s lead this season were Kingston’s Luis Velásquez (23) and Cobourg’s Brent Nix (22).

Fort Richmond’s 24-year old SP Nicky Sherlock (7-10, 2.79 ERA, 1.15 WHIP) set two new records this past season. First, his tally of 6.778 Hits Allowed/9 IP eclipsed Stratford’s Donn Griffin’s mark of 7.094, set in 1943-44. Ben Currall (7.063) and Jesús Chapa (7.064) also surpassed Griffin this season.

Nicky Sherlock also set a new mark for Opponents AVG, with .2114. That broke Donn Griffin’s mark of .2128, also set in 1943-44.

Finally, Sherburn’s Jesús Chapa set a new mark of .5531 for Opponents OPS. That surpassed the old mark of .5546, set by – you guessed it – Donn Griffin in 1943-44. I guess you could say it was ‘a tough year for the Donn’.

Notes on 1946-47 All-Braeland Team

Starting Pitcher

Narrowing this down to the two Satchel Paige winners was pretty easy, but how do you dare pass over the Triple Crown winner when selecting the best overall pitcher?
But in all honesty, I felt that RHP Jesús Chapa earned the nod over LHP Arthur Bence, despite Bence’s historic achievement. Here are their stats for comparison:

Chapa – 34 GS, 16-14, 286.2 IP, 225 HA, 8 HR, 86 R, 68 ER, 68 BB, 138 K, 2.13 ERA, .215 OPP AVG, .264 OPP OBP, .289 OPP SLG, .239 BABIP, 1.02 WHIP, 0.3 HR/9, 2.1 BB/9, 4.3 K/9, 2.0 K/BB, 160 ERA+, 2.46 FIP, 8.2 WAR.
Bence – 35 GS, 22-10, 289.1 IP, 240 HA, 14 HR, 71 R, 62 ER, 75 BB, 142 K, 1.93 ERA, .221 OPP AVG, .272 OPP OBP, .308 OPP SLG, .242 BABIP, 1.09 WHIP, 0.4 HR/9, 2.3 BB/9, 4.4 K/9, 1.9 K/BB, 172 ERA+, 2.89 FIP, 5.8 WAR.

Chapa pitched for a lousy team (Sherburn generated only 3.4 R/G, worst in the ULB), so his performance is all the more remarkable in my estimation. But this is one time where no matter who I pick, I feel rotten for passing over the other guy (I thought this was supposed to be fun!)

--------

Catcher

The same three catchers as last season were under consideration for the All-Braeland team, but again, C Danny Trowbridge (.343/.434/.504, 16 HR, 80 RBI, 9.1 WAR, .988 fielding %) ran away with this selection. The six-time all-star and two-time Babe Ruth Award winner earned his 6th selection to the Team.

The runners-up featured the Eastern Leagues’ Babe Ruth Award winner in Sheppard, as well as this past season’s All-Star Game MVP in Skidmore:

• Queensland's Elijah Sheppard (.294/.379/.469, 17 HR, 75 RBI, 69 BB, 7.4 WAR, -1.3 ZR)
• Stratford's Aaron Skidmore (.285/.417/.437, 16 HR, 87 RBI, 116 BB, 7.5 WAR, +1.9 ZR)

--------

First Base

This position also saw familiar faces in the running. Although he missed 38 games due to injury, Embro's Jim Friend (.322/.405/.550, 23 HR, 97 RBI, 64 BB, 5.8 WAR, -2.0 ZR) gets the edge over Brunswick's Stuart Bentham (.314/.403/.500, 24 HR, 72 RBI, 90 BB, 5.2 WAR, -4.9 ZR) even though Bentham finished ahead of Friend in the Eastern League Babe Ruth Award voting. If Bentham’s defensive metrics were better than Friend’s, it would have swung the vote in his favor in my opinion.

--------

Second Base

Another tough choice and perhaps sentimentality is clouding my judgment, but I went with Wellington’s 36-year old Ryley McLarnon (.329/.362/.409, 2 HR, 59 RBI, 29 BB, 4.1 WAR, -3.1 ZR) over Embro’s 25-year old José Sánchez (.258/.337/.381, 9 HR, 53 RBI, 67 BB, 22 SB, 4.3 WAR, +5.0 ZR). McLarnon has enjoyed a bit of a resurgence the last couple of seasons, but it’s not hard to see the 4-time all-star’s career winding down from here on out. Sánchez was the better defender overall, which exposes me to applying a double-standard (see the 1B selection), but McLarnon is still rated the 2nd overall second baseman in the ULB, behind only Downie’s 24-year old Robin Duerden (.299/.377/.456, 8 HR, 52 RBI, 44 BB, 3.4 WAR, -0.6 ZR at 2B). But Duerden only played 19 games at 2B verses 89 games at CF last season. So McLarnon gets his due before the young ones take over.

--------

Third Base

Adam Ashley (.328/.397/.439, 2 HR, 51 RBI, 70 BB, 10 SB, 7.9 WAR, +12.1 ZR) wins his third consecutive selection to the All-Braeland Team. Once again, it was not close. Ashley is rated the top 3B in the ULB and plays like it. For the record, here are a couple of other third basemen who also had fine campaigns, but couldn’t match the awesome Ashley:

• Wellington's 29-year old Thomas Murphy (.268/.322/.374, 6 HR, 52 RBI, 50 BB, 8 SB, 3.5 WAR, +3.6 ZR)
• Embro's 28-year old Elliot Tugby (.279/.350/.344, 1 HR, 62 RBI, 51 BB, 5 SB, 3.4 WAR, +12.0 ZR)

--------

Shortstop

This came down to three familiar names:

• Stratford's Jake Walker (.336/.441/.453, 5 HR, 63 RBI, 80 BB, 6.2 WAR, -3.0 ZR)
• Balmoral's Francisco Rodríguez (.324/.371/.456, 3 HR, 59 RBI, 34 BB, 6.1 WAR, +11.6 ZR)
• Cambria's Wesceslas Jasmin (.292/.356/.386, 1 HR, 40 RBI, 61 BB, 5.6 WAR, +4.4 ZR)

Walker is rated as the No. 1 shortstop in the ULB; Rodríguez No. 2. But I went with Rodríguez in a close one, as his defense was just too good to ignore in a premium defensive position. His offense (in a down year offensively in the ULB overall) was right there with Walker, especially when you consider he missed nearly two months due to a torn thumb ligament.

--------

Leftfield

25-year old Carlton Hawking (.335/.422/.482, 13 HR, 73 RBI, 83 BB, 5.4 WAR, -5.3 ZR) is rated as the top leftfielder in the ULB, and he makes his second consecutive appearance on the All-Braeland Team for Wolseley. But there were a couple of other players worth considering as well:

• Pulberry's Bruno Lapthorne (.280/.328/.382, 9 HR, 62 RBI, 43 BB, 3.4 WAR, +5.4 ZR)
• Brunswick's Terry Aspden (.322/.413/.484, 8 HR, 63 RBI, 59 BB, 3.4 WAR, -7.9 ZR)

--------

Centerfield

Embro’s 33-year old Terence Durney (.340/.416/.484, 9 HR, 70 RBI, 60 BB, 4.5 WAR, -17.9 ZR) is no stranger to the All-Braeland Team, having been selected previously five times. But while his offense remains top shelf (he won the Eastern League batting title), his defense has fallen off a cliff the past two seasons. Thus, Fort Richmond's 25-year old Dylan Moyne (.264/.324/.414, 14 HR, 61 RBI, 45 BB, 12 SB, 5.4 WAR, +12.6 ZR) earns his first selection to the Team, after coming close last season.

Wellington's 22-year old Edgardo Barrón (.307/.346/.410, 2 HR, 43 RBI, 29 BB, 4.2 WAR, +8.0 ZR), who won his first Top Fielder Award as well as his first all-star selection, is a player to keep an eye on going forward.

--------

Rightfield

New faces make up the top candidates in rightfield for the All-Braeland Team this season:

• Queensland's 27-year old Jilenko Vergara (.309/.388/.498, 17 HR, 70 RBI, 62 BB, 6.1 WAR, +9.6 ZR)
• Pulberry's 28-year old Jarod Dwyer (.299/.353/.468, 14 HR, 70 RBI, 42 BB, 5.5 WAR, +8.9 ZR)
• Hespeler's 26-year old Marcus Peyto (.288/.381/.472, 16 HR, 73 RBI, 80 BB, 4.7 WAR, -0.3 ZR)

After being out of commission for nearly 4 months the previous season due to a broken hand, Vergara enjoyed a healthy year and made the most of it, earning his first selection to the All-Braeland Team. He is also the top-rated RF in the ULB. Peyto (rated #2) and Dwyer (#3) also enjoyed fine seasons, but Vergara is the clear-cut choice to me.

Great read! I have looked at your story over the years but ashamed to say I never took the time to read it over properly. I have done so over the last few days though and really enjoyed it, also I have only two comments to make.

1. I picked Cambria Cannons at the start as the city is on a bay, same as my hometown, and...

2. I hate the Kingston Pelicans

Thanks tlowe77! I'm longing for a changing of the guard in the West as well, although I must admit I'm getting a bit of a kick out of seeing the Pelicans flame out in the playoffs the past few seasons. But its time for a change.

Things have been quiet around here for the past couple of months or so, but it's not because I've been busy with the league, unfortunately. A long-standing health issue came back to bite me and forced me to make a couple of trips to the hospital back in August. Things have finally settled down now, so I can pick up where I left off.

Right now, I'm working on the HOF report. After which I can finish up the off-season and then finally embark on the new season.

Thank you so much for the kind words, Eugene!

I suffer from Afib, and the meds I've been taking over the past few years decided to stop working, forcing me to get cardioverted a couple of times. The new meds are working, but its taken some time to get use to the side-effects.
But now my pharmacist is telling me that the drug is in short supply because the manufacturer is ceasing production of it! They're still looking into it, so I'll just have to wait and and see if that's true. It's always something!
