The Reds added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to an RBI single from Seymour. Kelley had a single in the bottom of the sixth for the Reds 10th hit of the game but he was left stranded at first. After six: Cincinnati 2 Chicago 0. Kelley got an RBI triple in the bottom of the eighth. That moved Kelley into sixth place all time in career triples with 182. Schlei then brought Kelley home with a single. The Cubs finally got on the board in the top of the ninth thanks to a 2 out RBI double by Sheckard. Then, a throwing error by Lobert gave the Cubs two more runs. But with the tying run at second, Chance grounded out to first to end the game. Final score: Cincinnati 4 Chicago 3. In the bottom of the eighth, Lobert tied the game with a two-run single. The Reds got the winning run on base in the bottom of the ninth but Odwell grounded into the inning ending 6-4-3. After nine: Chicago 4 Cincinnati 4. In the bottom of the tenth, the Reds got the winning run to third but Lobert grounded to third to end the inning. In the top of the eleventh, Chance had an RBI single to once again give the Cubs the lead. Steinfeldt singled to load the bases with one out. Dorner then hit Schulte in the knee to force in a run. Schulte had to leave the game and was replaced by Solly Hofman. Slagle then drew a walk to force in the next run. Dorner was replaced by Chick Fraser with the bases still loaded and one out. Tinker grounded into a fielder's choice at short, forcing the lead runner at home for the second out. Kling then popped out to second to retire the side as nine men came to the plate in the inning for the Cubs. The Reds were not done yet as Delahanty got an RBI single in the bottom of the eleventh. Mordecai Brown took the mound for the Cubs with runners at the corners and two out. Tinker fumbled the game ending grounder, allowing a run to score before Kelley grounded to short to end the game with the tying run at second. Final score: Chicago 7 Cincinnati 6 11 innings. The Cardinals committed a big error in the bottom of the sixth and then Evers tied the game with a 2-RBI single. After six: St Louis 3 Chicago 3. With the score still tied, Evers led off the bottom of the ninth with a double. Sheckard moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt. Chance was walked intentionally to put runners at the corners with one out. Schulte flied out to center for the second out. And the Steinfeldt flew out to center and the game went into extra innings. After nine: St Louis 3 Chicago 3. The Cubs got a runner to second in the bottom of the tenth but Reulbach flew out to center to end the inning. Bennett hit an RBI double in the top of the eleventh to give the Cardinals their lead back. Reulbach struck out Fromme to end the frame and record his 10th K of the game. With a runner on first and one out in the bottom of the eleventh, the Cardinals brought in Charlie Rhodes to pitch. The Cubs had the best pitching so far in the National League but offensive woes were hurting them. Only two teams in the league had scored fewer runs than Chicago. Meanwhile, the Pirates led the league in team batting average and were second in the league in scoring. The Cubs went on to load the bases with two out before Thompson struck out Evers to retire the side. In the bottom of the second, the Cardinals loaded the bases with one out. Thompson flew out to right and then Schulte threw Beckley out at home after he had tagged up and tried to score thus ending the inning. After three: Chicago 1 St Louis 0. In the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals again loaded the bases with one out. Thompson grounded to third and the lead runner was forced at home for the second out. Burch then grounded to short to end the inning. In the top of the sixth, Grady threw Chance out on an attempted steal of second base. It was the 10th time this season Grady caught a would be base stealer. In the bottom of the sixth, Arndt hit an inside the park home run with a man on base to give the Cardinals the lead. After six: St Louis 2 Chicago 1. In the top of the seventh, the Cubs turned a Cardinals throwing error into a game tying Sheckard run-scoring single. In the bottom of the seventh, Grady delivered the RBI single to put the Cardinals back in front. Beckley added a sacrifice fly that scored Smoot. The Cubs put runners at the corners in the top of the ninth but Chance grounded to short to end the game. The two teams combined for 23 hits in the game. Final score: St Louis 4 Chicago 2. A Steinfeldt single scored two. Slagle followed with a walk to again load the bases with one out. That led to a 3-RBI triple by Tinker. Kling then brought Tinker home with a groundout to second. The Cubs batted around the order and scored six runs in the inning. In the top of the second, it was Chance with the inside the park home run with a man on base. Tinker almost had another RBI but Steinfeldt was thrown out at home by Shannon while trying to score from second on a single. In the top of the third, a throwing error by Grady on a sacrifice bunt by Reulbach allowed Kling to score from second. Then a Chance double scored two. After three: Chicago 11 St Louis 0. In the bottom of the fifth, Bennett got the Cardinals on the board with an inside the park home run. Art Fromme took the mound for the Cardinals in the top of the sixth inning.
