They've Got High Hopes! A 2018 Phillies Dynasty

So my 1993 Phillies start has gotten a big stagnant for me so I wanted to try a more modern game. I like the challenge since I dont know all the players in the minors etc. Since I'm a partial season ticket holder this year I decided to do my beloved Phillies! This one will be in my normal format. I hope everyone enjoys!

Kier Named Phillies General Manager

March 2, 2018

Philadelphia, PA (AP) – Team president Andy MacPhail made his intentions clear. “We are going to get back to basics with this team. We are going to rebuild, and we are going to be successful.” Part of that plan involved the departure of Matt Klentak, who had been serving as the Phillies’ GM since Ruben Amaro, Jr’s departure. Klentak served as the team’s GM for two seasons. Reasons for his departure were not disclosed.

Taking Klentak’s place is another east coast hire. Scott Kier was previously serving as the Assistant GM for the Oakland Athletics. Kier, a native of Toms River, New Jersey, never played beyond Division III college baseball. A 2001 graduate of Springfield College in Massachusetts, Kier had a nose for the game. Out of college he worked for the New Britain Rockcats for three seasons before getting picked up as a minor league scout by the Boston Red Sox.

In 2012, he left Boston for Oakland where he was hired as the team’s director of amateur scouting. In 2014, he moved up to the role of Assistant General Manager.

Kier is notorious for being a numbers guy, much like Billy Beane was during his tenure. The collective goal expressed by both Kier and MacPhail was to restore the Phillies to their glory of earlier this century. Kier, himself, takes pride in being a life-long Phillies fan from the days when Michael Jack Schmidt patrolled the hot corner.

Kier fully recognizes and accepts that being the GM in Philadelphia means working with a franchise that has traditionally struggled. “We are going to have to be smart with our money. The trades that we make are going to have to have real goals in mind. Over the last couple of seasons this team has taken some major step forward and we are closer to the playoffs because of it. I’m here to put the finishing touches on everything.”

With just a month left until the regular season starts, Scott Kier and his new team have their work cut out for them. Kier plans to meet with Gabe Kapler and his coaching team to start hammering out expectations for the coming season.

Kier Pulls Off Masterful Deal

March 9, 2018

PHILADELPHIA, PA – “We did our homework and we are happy with the move.” That is how GM Scott Kier summed up Friday’s deal with the New York Yankees. The 7 player move adds some much needed depth to the Phillies at little expense.

Philadelphia sent OF Roman Quinn and 3B Maikel Franco who, as of late, has fallen out of favor due to what manager Gabe Kapler describes as a “lack of work ethic.” Quinn, who once showed a lot of promise, as struggled to crack the major league roster. He has impressive speed and offers a switch hitting backup outfielder option for the Yankees. While Franco’s work ethic might be questionable, his power is not. The 3B has hit 49 HR in his last two seasons, and although he seemed to regress in a number of ways with Matt Stairs as his hitting coach, surrounding him with a lineup like New York’s might help him see more favorable pitches.

Five players return to Philadelphia. Kier’s hall consists of RHP Dave Robertson, LHPs Jordan Montgomery and Chase Shreve, 1B/OF Tyler Austin and young 3B Miguel Andujar. Robertson’s inclusion in the deal can be seen as a big financial benefit to the Yankees. The 32-year-old closer-turned-setup-man who was reacquired by the Yankees last season was blocked from closing by Ardolis Chapman. Last year in time split between New York and the Chicago White Sox, Robertson posted a 1.84 ERA. In Philadelphia will pay $11 million of Robertson’s $13 million contract. He is scheduled to be a free agent next season.

Jordan Montgomery, 25, is a young starting pitcher who went 9-7 last season for the Yankees in limited time with the big club. Shreve is a fly ball pitcher who could serve as an effective lefty specialist if given the chance. He was 4-1 last season with a 3.77 ERA. Tyler Austin gives the Phillies a right handed pinch hitter and a backup first baseman for Carlos Santana. The 26-year-old Austin just cracked the majors last season.

Finally, Miguel Andujar was signed as an international free agent back in 2011. He showed improvement and more improvement year after year in the Yankees’ minor league system. Andujar will be the Phillies’ starting 3B on opening day. “He’s the key to this whole deal,” Kier said, “Gabe (Kapler) and I talked about him and we both knew exactly what we were looking for at the hot corner. There is a lot of history at that position, with guys like Mike Schmidt and Scott Rolen spending time there. We think that given the chance, Andujar can write his own piece of history.

With this trade, rookie GM Kier did not dip his toe into the trade waters, he straight cannonballed into them. “I trust my scouts,” Kier said, “We have set our expectations for them. When we evaluated this deal, we felt that it would be the best thing for the franchise going forward.”
The Phillies open the series on the 29th of March against the Atlanta Braves.

Phillies Make Second Deal of the Week

March 13, 2018

PHILADELPHIA, PA – After his blockbuster deal with the New York Yankees, Scott Kier got on the phone with Dave Dombrowski, GM of the Boston Red Sox. This time, Kier was looking to add some depth at catcher. What he added was a guy who is well known in the Venezuelan community in and around Philadelphia. Kier and the Phillies sent two minor league pitchers, Benjamin Brown and Jonas De La Cruz to Boston receiving IF Tzu-Wei Lin and fan favorite catcher Sandy Leon. Leon gives the Phillies a defensively solid pair of catchers, as he joins rookie Jorge Alfaro behind the plate. Last season, Leon hit .225 for the Red Sox while hitting 7 HR and 39 RBI in 85 games. He should expect to see a similar workload in Philadelphia, if not a little higher one.

“Now we are going to turn our attention to figuring out where everyone fits for opening day,” Kier said when asked if any more moves can be expected from Philadelphia. “We’ve added some key pieces, and I feel like we have a team that can really compete this season.

The State of Scott Kingery

March 18, 2018

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Earlier in this offseason, rookie Scott Kingery to a 9 year, $63 million contract. A steal. If he lives up to his potential. To help him along with that ultimate goal, the 23 year old right handed hitter will start the season at the team’s Lehigh Valley AAA affiliate. Kingery put together quite the 2017 campaign that paved the way to his contract. He hit 26 home runs and knocked in 65 RBI while stealing 29 bases in a season that saw him split time between Reading and Lehigh Valley.

GM Scott Kier spoke candidly about their plans for Kingery. “We want to see him get to be a little more versatile. Scott is going to spend some time at shortstop working with Gary Jones and his team in Lehigh Valley. We want to see what he can do if we switch him to another defensive position. It might give us some more opportunities once he’s on the big league team. If it doesn’t work out we will switch him back to second base and keep him there.

Rookie Andrew Pullin was called up to take his place on the roster. Pullin hit 20 home runs in the minors last season. This will be his chance to prove if he can cut it in the majors.

Phillies Opening Day Lineup

March 26, 2018

ATLANTA, GA – With the 2018 season right around the corner, the Philadelphia Phillies finalized their roster for their opening day game against the Atlanta Braves. Here is their projected starting lineup:

1. Cesar Hernandez 2B – Entering his third season full time with the major league team, Hernandez is a reliable, consistent leadoff hitter who has improved year after year.
2. Carlos Santana 1B – Santana will start the season as the #2 hitter but with time he could move down in the order. He will get on base either with his bat or his eye, and is the most well rounded Philly at the plate.
3. Odubel Herrera CF – The free swinging Herrera was the team’s All-Star representative last season. If asked to describe him in one word, many would be “streaky.” He goes through hot and cold spells but is still a solid hitter.
4. Rhys Hoskins LF – Hoskins makes the switch from 1B to LF. He is a power hitter who emerged after his callup last season. He will look to sustain his success from the 2017 season.
5. Miguel Andujar 3B – Acquired from the Yankees, Andujar will begin his rookie campaign as the Phillies’ starting 3B.
6. Nick Williams RF – Right field will feature a platoon between Nick Williams and Aaron Altherr. Williams will commonly get the nod against right handed pitchers.
7. Jorge Alfaro C – Behind the plate, the hard throwing Alfaro will split time pretty evenly with Sandy Leon. This gives Philadelphia a solid pair of defenders behind the plate.
8. J.P. Crawford SS – Crawford also cracks the lineup as a rookie this season. He’s a left handed bat that still needs to prove that he can keep up with major league pitching.

Bench:

C Sandy Leon – Acquired from the Red Sox, he will be the other half of the team’s catching pair.
1B/LF/RF Tyler Austin – Acquired from the Yankees, he will play a limited role as Santana’s backup and occasionally see time in the corner outfield positions.
IF Pedro Florimon – A utility guy in the team’s infield. Nothing more.
OF Aaron Altherr – He will split time with Nick Williams. If he gets hot, expect him to get more playing time.
OF Andrew Pullin – A rookie who will get a chance to prove his worth. He’s a low risk/high reward callup.

Rotation:

RHP Aaron Nola – At 24 years old, Nola is the future of the Phillies rotation. Last season he went 12-11 with 184 K’s on a team that went 66-96. He was a ray of hope in the future of the team.
RHP Jake Arietta – The 2015 Cy Young Award winner joins the Phillies just when they need him. His 3 year contract is an expensive one but the 32 year old Arietta has gone 54-24 in his last three seasons.
LHP Jordan Montgomery – Acquired from the Yankees, the 25 year old southpaw went 9-7 last season for New York in limited duty with the big league team. He’s #3 in the rotation for now, but he could see himself slide down once Jerad Eickhoff returns from the disabled list.
RHP Ben Lively – Lively will start the year with the Phillies but he will be battling to stay with the big team with Vince Velazquez and possibly Montgomery when Eickhoff returns. He went 4-7 with Philadelphia last season. Also, Zach Efflin, Nick Pivetta and Tom Eshelman are all waiting for their shot at AAA.
RHP Vince Velazquez – Once a promising young starter, Velazquez has been plagued with the injury bug for the last couple of seasons. He recorded a record of 2-7 last season. He needs to prove himself this year with all of the young pitchers looking up at the rotation from AAA.

Bullpen:

RHP Luis Garcia – A middle reliever, Garcia will see fringe 6th inning work when needed but could also be the main guy in the 7th.
LHP Adam Morgan – Coming off a season that saw this former starter strike out 63 and walk 18 in his 37 major league appearances, Morgan projects to be the main 7th inning reliever for the Phillies. He does possess the length to go two innings when needed.
RHP Victor Arano – Arano, 23, impressed the Phillies in his limited duty in the majors last year. In 10 games he posted a 1.69 ERA. His spot, however, will probably go to Tommy Hunter upon his return.
LHP Chasen Shreve – Another acquisition from the Yankees, Shreve will start as the team’s answer to left handed hitters. He’s a strikeout guy who also runs the risk of giving up a home run or two. If things don’t work out, Hoby Milner sits ready to step into the role at Lehigh Valley.
RHP Edubray Ramos – After a pretty solid sophomore season, Ramos will start the year as a solid 7th/8th inning option for the Phillies. His 4.21 ERA, however, is concerning. He will need help from his defense this year to improve on his 2017 record of 2-7.
RHP Hector Neris – Once the closer, he has fallen out of favor in that role. Some think it was his decline that drove the acquisition of David Robertson. Neris will see spot closer time but he’s not the main guy in Philadelphia anymore.
RHP David Robertson – The big fish in the Maikel Franco deal, Robertson shifts back into his familiar closer role. At 32 years old, he is making $13 million this season. Its unclear if the Phillies will try to resign him but they do have the budget room to do so. Robertson has 132 career saves in 583 appearances in the majors.

On the Disabled List:

RHP Jerad Eickhoff – A lat strain resulted in him missing most of Spring Training. He is almost ready to go.

RHP Tommy Hunter – Signed from the Tampa Bay Rays, Hunter should be a key guy in the Phillies bullpen. He may return as soon as next week.

RHP Pat Neshak – The veteran. The 37 year old with the bizarre submarine delivery still has more to give. With Hunter and Neshak returning, the Phillies could go with an 8 man bullpen. Its unlikely but it is possible.

Exciting Opening Day Results in Phillies Win

March 29, 2018

ATLANTA, GA – A game that had everything: home runs, a grand slam, a bench clearing brawl, and a remarkable comeback. Ace Aaron Nola got off to a rough start as the Atlanta Braves put up 7 runs on the 24 year old starter in the first inning. That would, however, be the only runs that Nola surrendered in his 5 innings of work.

After being hit by a pitch by starter Julio Teheran in the 5th inning, Philadelphia’s golden boy Rhys Hoskins charged the mound, clearing both benches and bullpens and resulting in ejections for Teheran, Hoskins, and Phillies bench coach Rob Thompson. Rookie Miguel Andujar responded in the next at bat with a two run home run that tied the game 7-7.

The next four innings featured a back and forth which sent the Phillies to the top of the 9th trailing 9-8. With closer Arodys Vizcaino on the mound, the Phillies were able to load the bases. With two outs, J.P. Crawford took to the plate, and belted a grand slam over the left field wall putting the Phillies up 12-9. Although he surrendered two runs, David Robertson (1 SV) was able to close out a win that ended up being credited to Tommy Hunter (1-0).

“A bench clearing brawl is not exactly the inspiration we want to look for every night,” manager Gabe Kapler said, “but this team came together and battled back.” With the Phillies up 8-7, Freddie Freeman hit a solo home run to tie the game up off of left handed pitcher Adam Morgan. Kapler said situations like that are all about the matchups. “It’s a numbers game. Tonight, that number did not go our way, but guys like Adam and Chasen Shreve are here to do a job. I’m confident that they can do them.”

Tomorrow night the teams will play game two. Both managers have disavowed the bench clearing brawl and have both said that there will not be a repeat of it. “Cooler heads will prevail,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said, “Gabe and I have both discussed it.”

Phillies No-Hit Braves

March 31, 2018

ATLANTA, GA – “There was a lot of hard work put in by a lot of people here,” said manager Gabe Kapler after five Phillies pitchers combined to no-hit the Atlanta Braves, beating the home team by a score of 3-0. Jordan Montgomery pitched 6 masterful innings striking out 5 hitters while walking 2, the only two runners to hit the base paths for the Braves. He was lifted in the top of the 7th for a pinch hitter.

Luis Garcia (1-0), Edubray Ramos, Chasen Shreve and Hector Neris (1 SV) combined to pitch a perfect 7-8-9 innings to lock up the no-no. A two run single by Aaron Altherr and a 9th inning single by Rhys Hoskins provided the Phillies with the 3 runs they needed to seal up the game.
“It’s a great feeling,” Jordan Montgomery said after his first start as a Philadelphia Philly, “obviously I would have liked to have the No-hitter to myself, but those guys in the bullpen did exactly what we needed them to today.”

Edubray Ramos pitched to just one batter, leaving the game with a sore shoulder. With Pat Neshak coming off the disabled list, Ramos was placed on to the 10-day DL to create the roster spot for Neshak.

The Phillies will be rewarded with a day off tomorrow before heading to New York to take on the Mets.

Arietta Spins Shutout for Philadelphia

April 4, 2018

NEW YORK, NY – Former Cy Young winner Jake Arietta gave the Phillies’ bullpen a much deserved night off as he crafted a 4-0 shutout victory against the New York Mets. Arietta went the distance for Philadelphia, striking out 11 and walking just 1 New York batter. Carlos Santana and Odubel Herrera provided the necessary offense as they each homered in the early innings of the game.

The contest was not without controversy though. Following the last out, Arietta appeared to celebrate a little too boisterously for New York manager Mickey Callaway, who could be seen scolding the famously outspoken right-hander as the clubs left the field. Arietta’s own manager then intervened with some words for his counterpart. The Mets skipper would not comment on the exchange, but at the Phillies press conference, Arietta confirmed that it was regarding the celebration.

“He basically told me I was a lousy winner,” Arietta said.

“And I told him he was being a lousy loser,” Philadelphia manager Gabe Kapler added.

After taking two of three from the Mets the Phillies now head home for their home opener against the Miami Marlins with a record of 4-2 from their opening road trip. Jordan Montgomery will get his second start of the year in the team’s home opener.

Pair of Injuries Changes Rotation

April 8, 2018

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Ben Lively took the mound for his second start of the season but he did not last an inning. The young right hander left the game with arm soreness. His diagnosis is still pending. Vince Velazquez was his replacement. Velazquez, making his first appearance of the year, lasted just two additional innings before leaving with an oblique strain. His injury will land him on the DL for two weeks.

The Phillies lost that game, and they recalled Nick Pivetta from Lehigh Valley to take Velazquez’s position in the rotation. Pivetta (1-0) went out on Sunday and helped the Phillies shut out the Miami Marlins by a score of 4-0. Carlos Hernandez went 4 for 4 for Philadelphia adding 2 RBI to his season total. Dave Robertson, who got off to a rough start this season, struck out two in the 9th in a non-save situation.

The Cincinnati Reds come to town tomorrow for a three game set with Philadelphia.

Key Returners Create Good Problem for Phillies

April 19, 2018

PHILADELPHIA, PA – With the Philadelphia Phillies riding high in first place with a record of 12-7, their disabled list is starting to empty out. Jerad Eickhoff has returned to the big league team and is scheduled to make his first start of the year on Saturday. Edubray Ramos is currently on a rehab assignment at Lehigh Valley, an assignment that might be extended if the performance of the Phillies’ bullpen continues. Ben Lively and Vince Velazquez are currently the only two Philadelphia Phillies from the big league team who are currently inactive. With Nick Pivetta posting a 3-0 record, however, his presence in the rotation has been extended indefinitely, until he starts to faulter.

David Robertson, who got off to a slow start this season, currently has 3 saves with a 3.86 ERA. He has struck out 12 batters in 7 innings of work. Hector Neris has yet to give up a hit and has a WHIP of 0.64 in 4.2 innings of work. Tommy Hunter seems to be the guy having the toughest time with a record of 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA. He might see his role with the team changed, especially with Pat Neshak returning and pitching as well as he is.

In the field, the Phillies currently post the second highest Defensive Efficiency in the National League at .719. J.P. Crawford has done well at short, and Carlos Hernandez has helped the pair combine for 11 double plays. Miguel Andujar is having the toughest time as he adjusts to the majors, having committed 5 errors at third. He is hitting .215 with 2 HR and 6 RBI. He might be another adjustment in the lineup, but there is little cause for concern, according to the Phillies’ coaching staff.

At the plate, the Phillies have performed well. Rhys Hoskins has 6 HR with a .407 OP and .277 average. Odubel Herrera has 4 HR of his own and Nick Williams has a .418 OBP. Everything just seems to be clicking right now for the Phillies. The goal for Gabe Kapler and Scott Kier is to create consistency for the team. Find a formula that works, let the players get used to it, and just don’t tinker too much as long as things are working.

Some big changes to expect might be the adjusting of Andujar down in the lineup, and maybe a little more time for Nick Williams in the center of the lineup. This will add a little more protection for Rhys Hoskins and more favorable matchups for Andujar to get his game together.

The Phillies return to Citizens Bank Field tomorrow for the first of a three game set against the Pirates.

Nola Throws Gem, Shuts Out Diamondbacks

April 25, 2018

PHILADELPHIA, PA – For a pitcher with the numbers Aaron Nola has put up this season, one would expect him to have a better record than 2-1. Wednesday night, he showed just how good of a pitcher that he is. The Phillies’ ace went the distance shutting out the Arizona Diamondbacks for his second consecutive complete game and first shutout of the year. Nola went the distance striking out 15 D’Back batters while surrendering three hits and two walks. Home runs by Odubel Herrera (5) and Jorge Alfaro (2) provided the needed offense as the Phillies’ bullpen sat out in right field watching the incredible performance put forth by the team’s #1 starter as the Phillies walked away with a 4-0 victory.

“Dominance. That is what you saw out there: pure dominance,” was the comment made by Gabe Kapler following the game, “There have been a number of legendary pitchers: Steve Carlton, Curt Schilling, Jim Bunning, Robin Roberts, Cliff Lee. This performance by Aaron ranks right up there with some of the best games ever pitched by someone in a Phillies uniform.”

Nola threw 136 pitches for the game, but his manager is not concerned about fatigue. “Our entire rotation is clicking right now,” Kapler said, “if there was more of a need to be top heavy right now and rely on guys like Nola and Jake Arietta, we would be managing our starts’ innings differently but right now, with the way Montgomery and Pivetta are pitching at the bottom of the rotation, and the return of Jerad Eickhoff, things are good right now.”

In other transactional news, Vince Velazquez has been cleared to play. He has been designated for assignment and sent to the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs.

The Phillies wrap up the three game set with the Diamondbacks tomorrow. Their record currently stands at 15-9, good enough to put them in a first place tie with the New York Mets.

Three Game Sweep of Phillies Costs More than Wins

April 29, 2018

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Phillies finished their first month of their season where they started: on the field against the Atlanta Braves. Unfortunately, they were not as successful as the Braves swept the Phillies in three games. It was injuries though where the Phillies were really held back. In the final game of the set, Nick Pivetta (3-1) had to leave the game in the second inning with an arm injury. The next day it was reported that he had torn his triceps in his pitching arm. This will keep Pivetta out for a reported 3 months. He was placed on the 60-day disabled list as a result.

In the same game, struggling reliever Tommy Hunter left the game with a reported back injury. He landed himself on the 10-day disabled list and will miss roughly two weeks of action. The reported injury might deliver some answers to the Phillies regarding Hunter. The 31 year old reliever has struggled mightily this year since joining the Phillies after a stellar season in Tampa Bay last year. He has posted a 1-1 record with an 8.68 ERA in 9 games.

To fill the vacated spots on the roster, the Phillies recalled Ben Lively who made start, earning his first win in the team’s next game. Edubray Ramos, who pitched in just one game for Philadelphia before going down with an injury, rejoined the team after going 0-1 with 3 Saves in 6 games for Lehigh Valley.

9-0 Victory Bittersweet for Phillies

May 3, 2018

MIAMI, FL – Most teams would be thrilled when they win a 9-0 game behind their ace starting pitcher. Aaron Nola, however would only see 5.2 innings of work on Tuesday. Nola left the game in the 6th inning with what is being reported as a sprained elbow. The injury will sideline Nola for roughly 6 weeks. “It’s a tough blow,” Gabe Kapler said, “but we will get by. We have a resilient team that has stuck together this year. Yes, Aaron is injured but rehab and his long-term wellness is what we will focus on now.”

Speculation about his workload through the first month was quickly squashed by Nola. “We monitor the performance of our pitchers closely, and none of us saw any issue with Aaron’s workload. He didn’t tire, he got the days off he usually would have, and he even got some additional days off.

After Nola left the game, Edubray Ramos and Chase Shreve combined for 3.1 innings of work, giving up just 1 hit and walking 3. Vince Velazquez was recalled to take Nola’s spot in the rotation.

Philadelphia improved their record to 17-13, and currently sit just 0.5 games out of first place.

Phillies Carry 13 Pitchers

May 4, 2018

WASHINGTON, DC – With Aaron Nola headed to the disabled list, GM Scott Kier and manager Gabe Kapler put their heads together and decided to add an additional pitcher to the Phillies’ roster. Andrew Pullin made 11 appearances this season, all of them as a pinch hitter. He recorded 5 hits in his 11 at bats. He has been sent to Lehigh Valley, and according to his GM, he will most likely eventually be recalled.

“We were very happy with how Andrew played over the last month,” Kier said, “but with our pitching situation what it is right now, we felt it would be valuable to carry someone who has experience both as a starter and in the bullpen.” That player is Mark Leiter Jr. The second generation Philly appeared in 27 games last season, 11 of them as a starter. In his 11 games at Lehigh Valley this season he has a record of 1-0 with 17 K’s in 19 innings.

Leiter will join the team as a long reliever and potential 6th starter to give an additional day off should the rotation become overburdened. According to his manager, he will be available for today’s game against the Washington Nationals.

Arietta has Memorable Day in Washington

May 4, 2018

WASHINGTON, DC – It took just 92 pitches for Jake Arietta (5-1) to go the distance in the Phillies’ 13-1 victory against the Washington Nationals. If that was not enough, Arietta had a memorable day at the plate as well.

The 32-year-old former Cy Young Award winner had five home runs coming into this season, and when he stepped to the plate in the 9th inning, he had a chance to hit his sixth, and this time, the bases were juiced. Arietta took a 2-1 fastball deep over the center field fence for his first career grand slam.

“It was definitely a memorable game for me,” a smiling, jubilant Arietta said, “Sandy (Leon) and I had our game plan, we scouted the hitters, and we stuck to it.” This is the 5th win of the season for the April NL Pitcher of the Month, and this was Arietta’s first chance to speak about the accomplishment. “It was a great honor. I felt like I had a good month, and I’m hoping to build on it. Today’s game was a great chance for me to do that.”

A couple of other Phillies had solid games. Aaron Altherr hit 2 home runs, bringing his season total to 5, knocking in 5 in the process. Arietta’s battery partner Sandy Leon hit 3 doubles and finished the game 4 for 5 with 3 runs scored.

The Phillies have two more games against Washington. Jerad Eickhoff (0-2) will take on former Philly Jeremy Hellickson (1-2) in game 2 tomorrow.

Jordan Montgomery Latest Phillies Injury

May 8, 2018

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Jordan Montgomery (1-2) left the game in the second inning of Philadelphia’s 6-5 victory against the San Francisco Giants with what was reported as a sore back. Today he placed on the disabled list retroactive to May 6th with a herniated disc. It is reported that he will miss 2-3 weeks. Montgomery is the third starting pitcher, along with ace Aaron Nola and Nick Pivetta to land on the disabled list.

To fill his spot on the roster Philadelphia recalled Tom Eshelman. The 23-year-old Eshelman has made one appearance in Philadelphia this season taking a loss, but has performed well at Lehigh Valley, posting a record of 3-0 with 16 K’s and just 1 walk in 23 innings over 4 starts.

In other minor league news, Scott Kingery has shown significant improvement in his new role at SS. Although he is not happy with his situation overall, the 24-year-old cold see himself recalled very soon. It is reported that he might get some more positional work over the next couple of weeks but when Aaron Nola returns, he could find himself back on the major league roster.

Impressive Debut for Kingery

May 18, 2018

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Six weeks in the minors was enough for Scott Kingery. He's busted out, and he's now with the big league team. The young second baseman was sent on a rigorous training and conditioning endeavor in at Lehigh Valley to try and expand his defensive abilities.

"We feel with Scott's work he was very successful," his GM Scott Kier said of the player's progression, "he can now play effectively at shortstop and he also got some time in right field as well. With a guy like Scott, we want to work him into the lineup and making him a little more versatile makes that a lot easier to do."

Mark Leiter Jr (2-0) was sent to the minors after his first start and second win of the season against the St. Louis Cardinals in favor of Kingery and his bat. The 24 year old rookie got his start at shortstop and responded by going 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored. He converted all three balls hit in his direction into assists.

The Phillies ultimately won the 9-3 with Ben Lively improving his record to 2-2. Odubel Hererra added 4 hits and 3 RBI of his own in the victory, the third straight for Philadelphia who improved their team record to 24-21.

After a couple of set backs, Tommy Hunter appears to be close to returning, and will likely rejoin the team later this week. Jordan Montgomery should not be far behind. Aaron Nola is expected to miss an additional 3-4 weeks' time before he is ready to return to the mound.

Phillies, Astros Make Deal

May 20, 2018

PHILADELPHIA, PA - With a glaring weakness in the team's bullpen the Philadelphia Phillies reached out to the Houston Astros today and closed a deal to strengthen the team's bullpen and add another potential piece for the future. The Phillies sent reliever Luis Garcia and minor leaguer Sixto Sanchez to the defending World Series Champs receiving reliever Will Harris and minor league starter J.B. Bukauskas in return.

Garcia, who is due for arbitration next season, has struggled for the Phillies in a middle relief role. He has recorded a record of 1-2 with a 6.06 ERA, striking out 23 hitters in 16 innings. Sixto Sanchez is a well regarded prospect in the Phillies' system. His 3-1 record in 6 starts for AA Reading is only held back by his 12 walks compared to just 11 strikeouts.

In return the Phillies add Will Harris. the 33 year old right hander has pitched well in the opportunities he's been given by the Astros this year. He has posted a 0.65 WHIP in 15 games, and has yet to give up an earned run. He will most likely slide into a role as the team's setup man. Finally, J.B. Bukauskas has struggled at "A" level ball for the Quad Cities River Bandits but he shows pretty significant potential. The 21 year old will start the year in the team's minor league system.

The move was most likely a financial one for the Astros. Harris makes nearly $3 million this season, and carries a team option for $5.5 million next season. With financial room to spare, the Phillies can afford his contract, at least through the end of this year.
