Power Ranking: 2oth, 61 points
Fan Interest/Loyalty: 62/Below Average
Owner Mood: Undecided
Attendance: 29,158 per game

Injuries:

Notes:
It was a tough strenth to end the month of May, the Los Angeles Dodgers, took 2 of 3, outscoring us 10-3 in the lossses. We one a 2-1 game, where Steve Cummings pitched 8 IP, give up 1 run on 8 hits, walked 1 and struck out 1. It was his fifth start since moving into the rotation and in all 5 he give up 2 runs or less in at least 6.2 IP. Then we took 2 of 3 from the San Francisco Giants. Ricky Jordan made his debut and went 1 for4 with a double and Louie Meadows added 2 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and a SB. We won a 7-6 game in 12 innings where Darren Daulton had 5 hits, including 2 HRs and 4 RBIs. We were shut out in the finale. Then we ended May with 2 losses to the San Diego Padres, 4-2 and 5-4. In, the 1st game, Steve Cummings had his worst game, 4 ER in 8 IP, 3 of which were in the 8th inning. Dave Gallagher went 3 for 4 with both RBis. IN the 2nd, Mike Schmidt went yard, Milt Thompson added an RBI triple, but it wasn't enough as Tom Newell give up 4 ER in 6.2 IP. Gary Varsho made his MLB debut this week, going 3-24.

After going 11-11 in April, we plummeted to 8-20 in May. THe offense ranks at or near the bottom in most categories while the Ptiching is all over the place. Hopefully, June and the draft bring better luck.

Notes:
June did not start better than May, as we dropped the first 4 games before winning our 5th. The San Diego Padres finsihed off the sweep with a 6-3 victory. Louie Meadows, went 2-4 with a HR, while Walt Weiss, Ricky Jordan and Cecil Fielder pitched in doubles. Bruce Ruffin picthed well, 2 ER in 7 IP, but CL Ed Nunez give up 4 runs in 1/3 of inning picking up his 4th BS and 3 loss. The St. Louis Cardinals came to town and pounding our pitching staff for the 1st 3 games, 19-1, 8-7 and 9-2. Kevin Gross (5 IP, 4 ER), Rob Hicks (1 IP, 6 ER), Steve Howe (3.1 IP, 4 ER),Michael Jacksons (1 IP, 2 ER), Mike Maddux (6IP, 6ER), Steve Cummings (5IP, 4ER) and Ed Nunez (1.2IP, 5ER) were the culprits. Rob Hicks was brought up when Keith Miller went on the DL and was rocked in his debut. The final game of the 4 game series, was a 5-2 win for the Phillies. Louie Meadows, Milt Thompson and Mike Schmidt all went deep and Tom Newill pikced up his first ML win going 6.1 IP, giving up 2 ER on 3 its.

Tom Barrett was ejected for charging the mound after getting hit and was suspended for 3 games. i will need to send Rob Hicks back down and bring up a hitter.

BBN News Draft Recap - 6/7/1988
The 1988 June Amateur Draft concluded today in New York City. After much debate and mock drafts by the analysts, we finally know who the Chicago White Sox took with the first pick: Mike Piazza, a 19 year old C from a high school in Florida. The Philadelphia Phillies had the 5th pick in today's and had a pick of three different power hitters, Frank Thomas, Jim Thome and Jeff Bagwell. BBN - 1988 MLB Playoff Report
While it was not as wild 1987, 1988 saw 2 of the divisions come down to the final week.

The New York Mets won 111 games and won the NL East by 25 games.

In the NL West, the Cincinnati Reds held off the San Diego Padres and won the division with a week left in the season.

In the AL East, Boston Red Sox had 2.5 game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays on September 23rd, with 10 games left. The Red Sox won their next 3 but followed that up with 5 straight losses. Meanwhile the Blue Jays won all 9 of their games from the 23rd on to win the division by 2 games. In true Boston fashion, after they were eliminated, they won their final 2 games

In the AL West, the Kansas City Royals trailed the California Angels by 2 games with 10 games left. They went 8-2 in that stretch. Unlike like year, they did not play the Angels, who went 9-1 to win the division by 1.

In the NLCS, the Reds easily took care of the Mets in a rematch of the 1987 NLCS. They won the series 4-1 with only loss a
1-0 loss to Dwight Gooden, who throw a no hitter. Gooden allowed onbe baserunner on a walk and he was erased on a double play. Reds SS Barry Larkin hit .353 with 1 HR and 2 RBI and was named Series MVP.

The ALCS was a much closer series with the Blue Jays and Angels spliting the 1st two games. Then Toronto won Games 3 and 4 to take a commanding lead and put them 1 win away from their 1st World Series appearance. California took the next two games to set up a win or go home Game 7. In Game 7, the Angels jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back, winning the game 7-3 and advancing to the World Series verse the Cincinnati Reds. Angels SP Mike Witt went 2-0, with 0.00 ERAm 4 hits, 5 BB and 12 Ks in 15.2 to win Series MVP.

The Cincinnati Reds took Game 1 of the World Series 2-1. In Game 2, the California Angels evened the series by winning 6-2. The Reds bounced back in Game 3 winning 6-3. The Angels turned thier pithcing up a notch, winning Game 4 (2-1), Game 5 (7-4) and Game 6 (1-0) to their first ever championship. CF Devon White, hit .318 with 1 HR and 3 RBIs to win the World Series MVP.

Congrats to the California Angels on their 1st World Series

11/11/1988 - End of Year GM Report
It was another tough year for the Phillies as we finished 63-99, which was tied for last in the division and tied for the 5th worst in the majors. We scored 599 runs and allowed 796. A staggering differnce of -197. Our final Power Ranking was 23rd. This was a major disappointment as I expected to imporve towards 80 wins, but the season started off rough when we lost Von Hayes for season in the first week. We had some ups and downs and some of our younger players made some strides, whihc gives me hope for next year.

Here is a position by position overview of the players who played for the Phils this season:

Catchers
 • Darren Daulton (Age: 27) - 399 AB, .208, 12 HR, 43 RBI, 4 SB, 14.7 BB%, 17.3 K%, .322 OBP, .668 OPS, .306 wOBA, 100 wRC+, 2.3 WAR, 0.8 ZR, 38.7 CS%
 • Tom Prince (24) - 125 AB, .224, 3 HR, 15 RBI, .300 OBP, 8.6 BB%, 15.7 K%,.304 wOBA, .668 OPS, 98 wRC+, 0.8 WAR, 0.5 ZR, 33.3 CS%
 • Lance Parrish - 102 AB, .260, 4 HR, 16 RBI, 3.9 BB%, 25.5 K%, .294 OBP, .721 OPS, .321 wOBA, 110 wRC+, 0.7 WAR, 0.5 ZR, 34.8 CS% Traded in May
 • Ronald Nelson (24) - 3 for 14, .214, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 5 K, 0.2 WAR, 0.5 ZR, 50% CS

While, the counting stats were the same,Daulton cut his K% by 5% and improve his walk rate by 3 %. He will be the starter next year with Nelson, and [b}Prince fighting for the backup spot. I will look to add some FAs or some of the guys form my upper minors into the mix as well.

 • Rich Amaral (26) - 3B - 64 AB, .172, 1 HR, 26 RBI, 4 SB, 8.3 BB%, 20.8 K%, .500 OPS, .235 wOBA, 47 wRC+, -0.4 WAR, -2.0 ZR
 • Mike Gallego (28) - 2B - 249 AB, .249, 1 HR, 16 RBI, 5 SB, 9.3 BB%, 12.8 K%, .655 OPS, .297 wOBA, 93 wRC+, 0.5 WAR - Traded in July
 • Walt Weiss (25) - SS - 489 AB, .268, 1 HR, 38 RBI, 21 SB, 8.5 BB%, 13.4 K%, .677 OPS, .308 wOBA, 101 wRC+, 3.2 WAR, +5.1 ZR
 • Greg Legg (28) - 2B - 38 AB, .152, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 0 SB, 10.5 BB%, 5.3 K%, .449 OPS, .215 wOBA, 32 wRC+, -0.3 WAR, -0.4 ZR
 • Brian Giles (28) - 2B - 76 AB, .184, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 SB, 17.2 BB%, 24.7 K%, .662 OPS, .306 wOBA, 99 wRC+, 0.5 WAR - Traded in May

 • Gary Varsho (27) - 2B - 122 AB, .180, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 9 SB, 6.8 BB%, 18.9 K%, .483 OPS, .223 wOBA, 38 wRC+, -0.1 WAR, +2.9 ZR

The infield was a mix of good and bad. After a slow start Walt Weiss caught fire in June and never looked back, finishing 3rd in ROY voting. Schmidt declined offensively but had a fantastic season defensively. Second base was a struggle until Tom Barrett took over. He played well, both offensively and defensively. I prefer him as a utility guy as he played well at 2B, 3B and LF. Plus with Weiss's lack of power, I'd like a better offensive 2B. All 3 of my first basemen were below average on offensive and defensive. I will probably keep Fielder as he has a ton of raw power and look to trade one of the other two. Amaral and Varsho will be fighting for bench spots. Legg most likely will be cut or in minors.
