04/25/1978 - Cubs Get Road Win, 8-5
The Chicago Cubs overcame a good performance by Philadelphia first baseman Richie Hebner to knock off Philadelphia, 8-5, at Veterans Stadium. Hebner went 3 for 4 with 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. Dennis Lamp picked up the win with 7 innings of work. He allowed 5 earned runs on 11 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 4. On the season, he is now 1-2. The Phillies, now 8-7, continue their sluggish start.

Behind a solid performance from catcher Joe Nolan, the Atlanta Braves defeated the Chicago Cubs, 9-3. Nolan went 4-5 with a home run and 3 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2 for the Braves. The winner was Mickey Mahler, who threw 119 pitches over 9 innings. The left-hander was charged with 3 runs on 5 hits. The Cubs fall to 6-14 and continue their lackluster start to the 1978 season.
Nolan contributed a big hit, a 2-run home run, for Atlanta in the bottom of the second. With his team trailing 1-0, Nolan took a slider from Dave A Roberts and stroked the home run to right. 05/03/1978 - Multi-HR Game for Kingman in 13-2 Win
The Chicago Cubs powered past the Los Angeles Dodgers, 13-2, at Wrigley Field. Dave Kingman was 3 for 4 with 2 home runs and a walk. He scored 3 runs and drove in 5, to lead the charge. Paul Reuschel got the win, improving to 1-2. He pitched 5.1 innings, giving up 4 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 4 and walking 3. The Cubs, with just their 8th win so far in 1978, have yet to catch fire.
Kingman had a key at-bat for Chicago early in the game. With a runner on 2nd, he hit a 2-run home run off RHP Don Sutton. It was his 7th home run of the season and gave Chicago an early 2-0 lead. Both teams had their chances, but the Chicago Cubs eventually prevailed at Wrigley Field.
Getting a good performance from left fielder Bill Buckner, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-6. Buckner was 2 for 4 with a home run and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 2 times for the Cubs. Bruce Sutter recorded the save for Chicago, his 6th of the season. Greg Gross, who is tied for 6th in the NL with a .369 batting average, aided the Chicago cause with a 2-run single in the bottom of the fifth. For the game, the right fielder was 3-5 with 3 singles. The Los Angeles Dodgers grabbed a 7-2 win over the Chicago Cubs at Dodger Stadium. Los Angeles first baseman Steve Garvey was 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles. The Cubs had to overcome a fine effort from St. Louis pitcher John Denny to grab a narrow 4-2 win at Busch Stadium II. Denny went 9 innings and allowed 4 earned runs. Fans who gathered at Wrigley Field saw a good contest between the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs.
The Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago Cubs, 4-3, at Wrigley Field. The Braves got a fine performance from third baseman Bob Horner, who captured player of the game honors. He went 2-5 with a home run, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Atlanta reliever Max Leon picked up the win to move to 4-1. Bruce Sutter suffered the loss. This game was not decided until late. With one out in the top of the tenth, Glenn Hubbard hit a sacrifice fly. The Braves took the lead, 4-3. "As well as we've been playing, I think we can play even better," said Atlanta manager . Conditions were not ideal but Cincinnati and Chicago were able to put their game in the books.
The Cincinnati Reds outscored the Chicago Cubs, 13-10. Ken Henderson led the way, going 3-for-4 for Cincinnati. Doug Bair converted his 4th save in 5 tries. Cesar Geronimo aided the Cincinnati cause with a 3-run home run in the top of the ninth. For the game, the center fielder was 1 for 5 with a home run. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3. Rader had a game-changing single in the bottom of the seventh. On a 0-1 curveball from Mark Wiley, he banged a run-scoring single to center, giving the Cubs a 6-5 lead.
