The Canadiens were a litttle better in the final 22 games, getting 24 of 44 points. One area that digressed was the work at the face off dot's. The Habs will be in position to get a pretty good 1st round draft choice.

Goalies Age Wins Losses T/OL SO GAA SV%
Nestor, Wilf 27 33 32 5 3 2.60 0.914
Mertel, Stefan 29 1 5 1 0 3.09 0.897
Janku, Marcel 31 0 5 0 0 4.93 0.865

Wilf Nestor carried the load for Montreal. Both Mertel and Janku were resigned and Mertel will get the 1st crack at the back up position next season.

6 solid young forwards to develop and make the forward core much better next season. Made a trade at the deadline to acquire Samuel Hebert from Calgary for J B Brooks. Hebert had 8 goals and 14 points in his 18 games with Montreal.

The Canadiens did not have a good start to the season. The team has struggled at both ends of the rink. Just to get back into the playoff race then would need to get 30 points in the next 20 games. One thing I think we can count on is that Wilf Nestor will be better in the next 20 games.

Goalies Age Wins Losses T/OL SO GAA SV%
Nestor, Wilf 28 6 11 2 0 3.25 0.903
Mertel, Stefan 29 1 0 0 0 0.96 0.963

Not that our record is totally the responsibility of Wilf Nestor, we know he will be better, but we are not scoring many goals. We had only one back to back this first stretch, so not much action for Stefan Merkel.

I am going to send Oscar Breuer to the AHL and bring up back up Kevin Steinberg. Steinberg had 3 goals and 12 points in 13 games in the AHL and was a +13.

The 20 year old Hedberg has 7 goals and 23 points in 19 games in the AHL. I am also going to promote Andrew Walsh. The 20 year old Walsh has 12 goals and 29 points in 19 AHL games.

The Canadiens did play somewhat better the past 20 games, getting 21 points in those games. Goal scoring was down, but the last 10 games or so but we scored 29 goals. So maybe it's improving. I was extremely pleased with our PK improving so drastically and also happy or goals against has been much better. We gave up 17 goals in our last 10 games. Need a strong 20 or so games until the trade deadline to get into a playoff spot. Need to be around 65 points to at the 60 game mark to be close enough to compete.

As we predicted, Wilf Nestor would get better and he did. His save % is getting back to where is has been historically. Tomas Zadina came up for 3 games while Nestor nursed a injury. He faced 125 shots in 3 games.

Jonathan Harper continues to be the offensive leader on the defense but Lance Lambright has been my most consistant defensemen on both sides of the puck. I am going to demote LD Kevin Steinberg to the AHL and promote LD Jakub Svec. Svec was our 114th overall pick in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. He has played 40 games in the AHL, the 19 year old has 7 goals and 33 points with a +17 rating.

A couple of young guys are starting to provide some offense for us. Josef Kramar and Samuel Hebert are the young guns that hopefully will continue to develop in this rebuild. Yes I called this a rebuild !!!! Riley Callander continues to lead the forward core offensively and can be counted on to be responsible defensively. I am going to demote RW Andrey Kozlov and RW Cory Brueggeman to the AHL. I am going to promote LW Brayden Laureano and LW Kevin Martin from the AHL. The 19 year old Laureano was signed as an undrafted free agent. The former Bob Clark Trophy Winner (WHL Top Scorer 1982) has 17 goals and 49 points in 40 AHL games. The 29 year old Martin had 6 goals and 14 points in 21 games after being demoted in November to the AHL.

The Canadiens did not make up any ground in the last 20 games. Mostly due to injury. There is no question that we are out of the playoff race with 93-94 points needed to make it. Is 19-3-0 reasonable for this team missing so many key components.... no way Jose!

This is certainly the strength of the team right now. Wilf Nestor has been consistant the last 40 or so games while Stefan Mertel has done everything you can ask of your back up.

Assistant Captain Jonathan Harper is certainly our best offensive defenseman right now. Lance Lambright is our top defensive defenseman and probably overall defenseman. We are going to send down Jakub Svec for more icetime and development in the AHL, We will bring back up Kevin Steinberg, he has 5 goals and 21 points in 32 AHL games.

Montreal has gone with a youth movement, but right now we could use a few more healthy bodies. Quincy Kaminsky is expected to be out for 1-2 more weeks with a rotator cuff injury. He has been out a month. Brayden Laureano is expected to be out another 2-3 weeks with a strained medial collateral ligament, he has been out since January 23rd and Ben Archer will be out for 1-2 more months. He was hurt 5 weeks ago with torn biceps.

The Canadiens had modest improvements in pretty much all areas in the final 22 games despite missing some players to injury. Hopefully by going 13-8-1 in the final 22 games will bode well with a better start to the 1983-84 season. We finished 5 points out of a playoff spot, as the last wild card team had 88. I am thinking with the some youthful development and another good season from G Wilf Nestor, we can be a playoff team next season.

After having a terrible start to the season, Wilf Nestor had a great finish. Nestor should provide Montreal with solid goaltending for years, hopefully the youthful defense and offense will start to develop.

The Canadiens did have significant injuries to Quincy Kaminsky and Ben Archer in the later part of the season. We did make a trade sending C Herman Hedberg to Anaheim for C Bryce Spencer. Spencer had 6 goals and 18 points in 22 games centering the 2nd line.
