The matchups seem split with the Rangers overall seeming to have a small advantage.

The first three innings went by with each team getting just one hit.

After three: California 0 Texas 0.

The Angels got a run in the top of the fourth but that was all for the middle innings.

After six: California 1 Texas 0.

The Angels got their second run in the eighth.

Dick Billings led off the bottom of the eighth with a double. Ted Ford then brought him home with an RBI single to make it 2-1. The Angels went to the bullpen as Don Mincher came in to pinch hit for Kubiak. A wild pitch sent the tying run to second. Mincher then laid down the sacrifice bunt to move Ford to third. Larry Biittner then pinch hit for Gogolewski but grounded out with bringing Ford home. Maddox then flew out to center to end the inning.

And that would do it as the Rangers went down in order in the ninth.

Final score: California 2 Texas 1.

The Rangers match up well to even this series and get back to .500 but they need Howard, Burroughs and Harrah to show up.

Stanhouse did not allow a hit in the first three innings while Murphy only allowed one

After three: California 0 Texas 0.

The no-hit bid ended for Stanhouse in the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, the Rangers stranded a runner at third. It was the first runner of the game to reach third.

Through six: California 0 Texas 0.

The Angels got a pair of hits in the seventh but still could not reach third base.

The Rangers also got a pair of runners on in the seventh but also failed to score.

The Rangers went to the bullpen in the eighth and Horacio Pina kept the game scoreless.

In the bottom of the eighth, Hal King hit a solo home run.

Pina would issue a walk in the ninth but allow nothing more.

Overall Texas has the slimmest of margins but Nolan Ryan could be the difference in the game.

The Angels would get the only hit in the first three innings.

After three: California 0 Texas 0.

An error would do significant damage in the fourth as the Angels would score two unearned runs.

The Rangers added on the errors in the sixth inning and the Angels added on the runs. Seven of them to be exact.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Rangers stranded the bases loaded.

After six: California 9 Texas 0.

At one point in the sixth and seventh innings, Nolan Ryan struck out four straight batters.

The shutout bid ended in the eighth when Kubiak scored on a wild pitch.

In the ninth, Ryan struck out Frank Howard to record his tenth K of the game. Howard struck out in all four of his plate appearances.

The Tigers come into the series with the worst record in all of baseball but the matchups heavily favor Detroit.

As Rangers games go, this one starts no different. Each team has one hit through the first three innings.

After three: Detroit 0 Texas 0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jeff Burroughs hits his team-leading third home run, this one coming with a runner on first. Burroughs also leads the team with nine RBI after this at-bat.The Rangers end up totaling five hits in the inning, but only get those two runs.

In the top of the sixth, Aurelio Rodrigeuz tied the game with a two-run shot. His first homer and first RBI of the season. That one at-bat sent Rich Hand's ERA from below 1.0 to above 2.0.

After six: Detroit 2 Texas 2.

The Tigers went down in order in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, the Rangers pinch hit for Hand, meaning they would go to the bullpen in the eighth. The Rangers would strand the go-ahead run at second.

The Tigers pinch hit for Coleman in the top of the eighth, ending their starting pitcher's day as well. The Tigers went down in order once again.

Dave Nelson would get a lead off walk in the bottom of the eighth but would be thrown out trying to steal second as the Rangers had an unorthodox 1-2-3 inning.

The Tigers stranded the bases loaded in the top of the ninth.

Vic Harris pinch hit to lead off the bottom of the ninth and drew a walk. But Biittner then hit into the 4-6-3. Kubiak then grounded out to end the inning.

After nine: Detroit 2 Texas 2,

Pina walked the first two batters in the top of the tenth and was replaced by Paul Lindblad. and he retired the next three to keep the game tied.

Tom Grieve then led off the bottom of the tenth. Only his second at-bat of the season. And he sent it out of the park and sent the fans home happy with his first hit of the season!

Boston's much stronger outfield makes the Red Sox the clear favorites.

Boston pounced with three runs on five hits in the top of the first. Meanwhile, the Rangers bats are the Rangers bats and could get just one hit in the first three innings.

After three: Boston 3 Texas 0.

Bosman settled down after that first inning, allowing just four hits over the next five innings. But he was getting no run support at all.

After six: Boston 3 Texas 0.

Boston pounced again in the eighth, adding another run thanks to an error and sending Bosman to the showers. Two more runs would score with Casey Cox on the mound but would be charged to Bosman.

Toby Harrah would finally put the Rangers on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth. Elliott Maddox would then score on an error. And Dick Billings would deliver an RBI single.

In the bottom of the ninth, Don Mincher came through with a pinch hit RBI single to make it 6-4. Dave Nelson then tied the game with a 2 RBI double.

And the game went to extra innings.

Boston went down in order in the top of the tenth.

In the bottom of the tenth, Texas stranded the winning run at second.

The Rangers turned a double play in the top of the eleventh to wipe out a leadoff walk.

Vic Harris came in to pinch hit and got a leadoff single in the bottom of the eleventh but was thrown out trying to steal second.

Texas got two hits in the bottom of the twelfth but could not come up with a run.

In the top of the thirteenth, pinch hitter Duane Josephson broke the tie with a solo home run off Mike Paul.

In the bottom of the thirteenth, the Rangers got a pair of two out singles and then pinch hitter Hal King walked to load the bases. Dave Nelson then grounded into an error and the game was tied again! It was Boston's fourth error of the game. Then, Frank Howard, who was 0-for-6, ended the game with an RBI single.

Texas can get back to .500 with a win but the matchups again heavily favor Boston.

Both pitchers work themselves out of early trouble in the first inning and the Rangers strand a runner at third in the second.

Boston gets on the board in the top of the third. Texas gets the first two on in the bottom of the third but can't bring them home.

After three: Boston 1 Texas 0.

Both teams strand a pair in the fourth.

Jeff Burroughs ties the game with an RBI single in the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth with a man on first, Ted Kubiak hit his first home run of the season.

After six: Texas 3 Boston 1.

Broberg retired Boston in order in the seventh and eighth innings.

In the top of the ninth, singles by Fisk and Yastrzemski gave Boston runners at the corners and nobody out. Broberg got Petrocelli to ground into a double play, allowing one run in exchange for two outs. Pinch hitter Rick Miller walked to put the tying run back on base but Broberg got Aparicio to fly out to right to end the game.

The final in this home series against the Red Sox.

Can the Rangers get the sweep ? The matchups say no but the Rangers have overcome the matchups twice already.

Boston got an unearned run in the top of the first. Meanwhile, the Texas bats return to mush as the Rangers cannot produce a single base runner in the first three innings.

After one: Boston 1 Texas 0.

That changes in the fourth as the Rangers put together several hits in a row and tie the game on an RBI single by Jeff Burroughs.

An error and a bases loaded walk allows Boston to retake the lead in the top of the sixth.

After six: Boston 2 Texas 1.

The final three innings went by quietly as the Rangers could not get the tying run even to second base.

Final score: Boston 2 Texas 1.

The Indians come in as the worst team in baseball but come in with the matchup advantage overall.

The Indians scored first with a run in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third, Toby Harrah tied it with an RBI single and Jeff Burroughs did the same to give the Rangers the lead.

After three: Texas 2 Cleveland 1.

Gogolewski got out of a jam in the fourth as the Indians stranded runners at second and third. In the bottom of the fourth, Gogolewski grounded into a fielder's choice that brought home a run and then scored himself on an RBI double by Elliott Maddox.

In the bottom of the fifth, Dick Billings got an RBI single to increase the Texas lead.

After six: Texas 5 Cleveland 1.

The Rangers went to the bullpen in the seventh and the Indians got a run off Casey Cox in the eighth. Horacio Pina then set the Indians down in order in the ninth to get the save.

Gaylord Perry gives Cleveland an even bigger matchup advantage that the Indians had in game one but Texas already overcame the odds once in this series.

The first two Rangers get on in the bottom of the second but they are unable to score.

After three: Cleveland 0 Texas 0.

The Indians get a lead off double in the top of the fourth but can't advance the runner and the load the bases in the top of the fifth and yet still find themselves with a goose egg on the scoreboard. The Indians would strand a runner at second in the sixth as well.

Meanwhile, through six innings, the Rangers have just one base hit.

After six: Cleveland 0 Texas 0.

A throwing error by Cleveland in the bottom of the seventh gives the Rangers a base runner at third with two out. Dick Billings then drew a walk as did pinch hitter Don Mincher to load the bases. But Kubiak struck out and the game was still scoreless.

Repeat the process in the bottom of the eighth as an error gets a runner to third, but this time with just one out. Toby Harrah grounds out with being able to bring the runner home. And then Dave Nelson strikes out and the go-ahead run is stranded at third for the second straight inning.

It's still scoreless in the bottom of the ninth. Jeff Burroughs leads off with a single. Frank Howard moves him to second with a single. Vic Harris pinch hits and grounds into the 6-4 but beats out the throw to prevent the double play. Runners at the corners and one out. Tom Grieve then ends the game with an RBI double!

Final score: Texas 1 Cleveland 0.

On paper, this is a huge mismatch in favor of Detroit.

The Tigers scratched out a run in the first inning.

The Rangers could not even get a base runner in the first three innings.

After three: Detroit 1 Texas 0.

In the top of the fourth, Jeff Burroughs tied the game with an RBI double.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers loaded the bases with nobody out and plated two of them.

In the bottom of the fifth, Broberg got his 30th strikeout of the season, getting Norm Cash to whiff at a sinker.

After six: Detroit 3 Texas 1.

In the top of the seventh, Frank Howard tied the game with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot. But, in the bottom of the seventh, Al Kaline hit a solo home run to give Detroit the lead back. Norm Cash added a two-run shot, his seventh home run of the season.

Seems redundant to mention that the matchups are, once again, not in the Rangers favor.

The Rangers offense has been so bad that, despite having a 0.92 ERA, Stanhouse has a record of 0-3.

Two walks and an error allow the Tigers to load the bases in the bottom of the first. Two more walks force in a pair of runs and a third scored on a sacrifice fly. The Tigers get three runs without a hit in the first inning.

Timmerman is as bad as Stanhouse in the second as he walks the first two batters he faces. But the Rangers strand them at the corners without getting a run.

Willie Horton hit a two run shot in the bottom of the second.

Stanhouse leads off the top of the third with a double. Maddox singled to move him to third and Harrah brings him home with a sacrifice fly. Nelson follows with a single and then the Rangers pull off a double steal. Burroughs then brings Maddox home with a sacrifice fly.

The Rangers threw a man out at home to end the third inning.

After three: Detroit 5 Texas 2.

The Rangers got runners on the corners with one out in the top of the fourth but could not score. They also failed to score in the fifth after putting a man on third with one out.

After six: Detroit 5 Texas 2.

Mike Paul came on to pitch the seventh for the Rangers and the Tigers added a run to their lead. Then, in the bottom of the eighth, Willie Horton added a three run homer, his second home run of the game.

Final score: Detroit 9 Texas 2.

The Tigers have made the most of their advantages, having beaten Texas three out of four so far this season.

Mickey Lolich comes into the game second in the AL in wins and strikeouts and third in the league in innings pitched .

A walk and single begin the game and Texas has runners at the corners and nobody out in the top of the first. Dave Nelson leads the league in stolen bases but is hitting .188 and he lines out here. Jeff Burroughs then strikes out and there is two down. Frank Howard then flew out, illustrating the woes of the Rangers offense in 1972.

Burroughs comes to bat in the top of the third with runners at first and second and two out and he grounds out to second base.

The Tigers get back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the third for their first hits of the game and take the lead.

After three: Detroit 1 Texas 0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Norm Cash hits his eighth home run of the season, a solo shot measured at 362 feet.

The top of the order comes up for Texas in the fifth with Kubiak at second and one out. Maddox lines right back to the pitcher for the second out. Harrah comes to bat and Kubiak advances to third on a wild pitch. Harrah then brings him home with a base hit that cuts the lead in half.

A throwing error by Detroit's third baseman gives Texas runners at second and third with one out in the top of the sixth. Larry Biittner grounds out to second without bringing a run home and there is two away. Kubiak is intentionally walked to load the bases for Gogolewski and the Rangers pitcher grounds out to first as another scoring threat comes up empty handed.

After six: Detroit 2 Texas 1.

The Rangers get a pair of singles to lead off the top of the eighth. Don Mincher pinch hits for Biittner and promptly strikes out. Kubiak grounds into a fielder's choice that puts runners at the corners and two out. Vic Harris came in to pinch hit for Gogolewski and slapped one into center field to tie the game. Maddox then struck out to retire the side.

Horacio Pina comes in the pitch and the Tigers quickly get the lead back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth.

The Rangers get a walk and a single in the top of the ninth. Frank Howard comes to bat with runners at first and second and one out. Howard rolls a single into center field but Nelson is thrown out at home after trying to score from second base. Dick Billings then strikes out to end the game.

This biggest mismatch so far the Rangers have faced this season.

Broberg allows back to back walks with two out in the bottom of the first and Brooks Robinson makes him pay with an RBI single, although Billings thought he had tagged Boog Powell out at the plate.

Toby Harrah had a one out double in the top of the second. Mincher then struck out and Kubiak grounded out to strand Harrah.

Broberg walked the first four batters he faced in the bottom of the third and the Orioles turned that into a pair of runs.

After three: Baltimore 3 Texas 0.

In the top of the fourth, Dave Nelson swiped his league-leading 10th stolen base. A couple batters later and Toby Harrah smacked a two run triple. Mincher then tied the game with a sac fly.

The Rangers loaded the bases with two out in the top of the fifth but Dick Billings grounded to short to retire the side.

Toby Harrah led off the top of the sixth with a single, meaning he was a home run away from hitting for the cycle. Later in the inning, the Rangers were on second and third with two outs but Maddox lined out to right to retire the side.

After six: Texas 3 Baltimore 3.

Toby Harrah would not get the chance to hit for the cycle. With runners at first and second and two out, Ted Williams sent Frank Howard in to pinch hit for Harrah in the top of the seventh. The questionable decision paid off, however, as Howard delivered an RBI single to put Texas in the lead.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Rangers had out-hit the Orioles 11-3. But, Broberg was struggling to find the strike zone and would walk Don Baylor in the seventh to issue his eighth BB of the game, tying an AL record.

The Rangers would strand a runner at third in the top of the eighth.

Horacio Pina would come on to pitch in the bottom of the eighth. And he would come one out short of getting the save.

With a runner on first and two out in the bottom of the ninth, Don Baylor came to bat. The first pitch was a 91 mph fastball low on the outside corner.

Baylor sent that pitch 416 feet into left center.

Final score: Baltimore 5 Texas 4.

Even the Rangers best players can do no more than try to equal Baltimore's weaknesses.

The Rangers kill themselves in the first inning. Bosman boots what would have been a third out ground ball and the very next batter, Bobby Grich, makes him pay with a two run blast, Grich's first home run of the season.

Boog Powell hit a two run shot of his own in the bottom of the third.

After three: Baltimore 4 Texas 0.

Kubiak put Texas on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI single. And Burroughs added an RBI on s sac fly in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Grich hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot to left.

After six: Baltimore 5 Texas 2.

The Orioles added an RBI double by Rettenmund and a two run homer by Powell in the seventh. Like Grich, Powell had two home runs in the game.

The Orioles piled on a run in the eighth thanks to the Rangers second error of the game. Pinch hitter Al Bumbry got his first RBI of the season when he doubled home Mark Belanger.

In the top of the ninth, Vic Harris came up with a pinch hit RBI double and Burroughs delivered an RBI single.

Final score: Baltimore 9 Texas 4.
