I'm still following along and still am enjoying this very much!
I am setting up an English baseball league myself, four divisions of 18 teams...inspired a bit by your fantastic league! |

Cumbrians Stun Home Team at Villa Park. A match taking place between clubs at opposite ends of the Second Division table sprung forward a surprising result on Monday. The Carlisle United club had made the long journey afield to Witton, Birmingham to provide the opposition for the Aston Villa club to begin the week’s early series, and nothing much was expected to come of it for the Cumbrians. They are firmly ensconced at the foot of the table in an early fight to avoid relegation against the likes of Accrington Stanley and Oldham Athletic, whilst Villa play at the head as the early favourite to move up to the Championship next season, and sit a full fifteen lengths ahead of United. In front of a passive crowd numbering some two thousand or so, events were proceeding as expected. After a quick and scoreless four innings had transpired, Villa put up six tallies in a strong three innings run, with United being blanked by the excellent pitcher Dibble on a mere three base hits. But then, as though a cage door had been opened, the Cumbrians roared to life. After a perfunctory ground ball out to begin the eighth innings, they strung together a 2B, a single for a run, a walk, and another single. The second out came on a short fly ball not deep enough to plate the runner from third, but the Cumbrians were unencumbered by the setback, and struck back with a single for their second run, a walk for their third, another single for two more, and a bases clearing twobee for yet another two scores, and just like that, lowly Carlisle United had taken a seven runs to six lead over the mighty Aston Villa! Two more walks filled the bases to threaten more damage, but Dibble collected himself and induced the ground ball out to end the frame. The dazed Villa batsmen stumbled through their part of the eighth, managing a 2B but no more. The embattled Dibble inexplicably took to the pitch for the ninth, for which United were clearly delighted, for the lead batsman Coventry greeted him with a single straightaway. After two outs by the fly ball and the ground ball, Dibble walked Fereday and conceded a single to Rickard for yet another run, putting Villa down two. Enough, said manager Mason, and he brought in Whyte to quench the fire. Whyte instead brought a match, for his second delivery to Stevenson was deposited over the right field fence for another three runs, and that provided a four runs lead for Carlisle over the bedazzled Villans. To their credit, Villa fought well to begin the ninth, making two singles. But alas, the bottom third of the batting order came up and make three quick outs, two by the strike out, and the comeback victory was completed. Notwithstanding the victory, nothing in the big scheme of things changed for either side. Villa are still in the first place whilst United continue to languish at the bottom, but for one glorious afternoon, the Cumbrians demonstrated that no club can be summarily dismissed before they first have their say on the pitch.
