1901-1920 Baltimore Orioles/NY Yankees

Just getting into OOTPX, and decided to start at 1871, run it to 1901 and then take over the worst team and go from there. My assumption, from past experience with OOTP2-OOTP9, was that it would take 6 or 7 seasons before I assembled a dynasty that could run the table for a generation or so.

Oh, how wrong I was.

In 20 seasons, I managed to win a measly 3 pennants and 1 championship.

Just amazing (settings were VH on trading, with ghost players enabled to find that rare gem in Tanzania or wherever).

I would watch my team of all-stars either fold down the stretch like a cheap table or get hit with injury after injury or have proven studs play like crap at the worst time.

My 1917 team finished 3rd at 79-75, 5 games back, despite this freaking lineup:

C Ted Easterly
1B Wally Pipp
2B Eddie Collins
3B Tex McDonald
SS Rogers Hornsby
LF Ty Cobb
CF Joe Jackson
RF Babe Ruth

Christy Mathewson
Walter Johnson
Ed Reulbach
Waite Hoyt

They had a 6 game lead on September 1st. Then Jackson goes down. Then Pipp. Then Cobb goes cold and hits .212 for the month. Ruth managed only .232 the whole damn season.

I stared in disbelief as the loathesome Boston Red Sox took yet another damn pennant (from 1908 to 1920, they grabbed 9 pennants with 5 titles).

I never finished worst than 4th in any of those 20 years, but still, with all that talent to win only 3 pennants - damn frustrating...

Good to see that the game has improved from the previous versions to the point where winning is a challenge again, and not just commonplace.

Nice team - some great names there. Three penenats and a Championship is nothing to be ashamed of.

BTW - enabling ghost players has nothing to do with finding talent in odd places. Ghost players is so you can play with incomplete minors.

There is an option in league setup, under "Player and Picture Options" tab for creating and mainting hidden players. This will allow the possibility of finding a gem in some far off foreign land. Also, you need scouting enabled for these players to be found.

Some interesting talent found over the years, including Hsin "Bullets" She, who was discovered in China by the Senators in 1896, and had a great 293-233, 2.35 ERA career, mostly for the Athletics.

Boston has won all those pennants with, essentially, Tris Speaker, Sam Rice and... garbage...

Managed to close out my Yankees career with a run of titles, thanks to Ruth and Gehrig anchoring this lovely lineup:

Cool Papa Bell
Max Bishop
Rogers Hornsby
Babe Ruth
Lou Gehrig
Gabby Hartnett
Ty Cobb
Luke MacNeur

A fine end to 25 years of managing the Yankees, though still stunned that it took 20 years of fine tuning the franchise before continued success happened..

What roster did you use to get Cool Papa Bell? I would like to have Josh Gibson be able to play with. I do not mean just his last year but his whole career.
