Montreal Canadiens (42-26-4) at Florida Panthers (34-34-4)

The Canadiens play on back to back nights and pay a visit to the BB& T Center. Montreal split two meetings so far both at the Bell Center. The last time Montreal came away with a 5-3 win. Montreal lead the Atlantic Conference with 88 points with a point and a game in hand on Boston. The Panthers are currently 8th in the East with 72 points.

LW Brayden Laureano is a 21 year old from Markham, ON. The scouts say he is a two way forward and the strongest part of his game is his goal scoring ability. He is also a very good passer and stick checker. Laureano has been platooning on the 3rd and 4th lines tonight he gets a 3rd line assignment as a set up man and punishing forward. Montreal signed him as a undrafted free agent in July 1982, he made his NHL debut on December 26th, 1982. In 12 games this season with Montreal he has 0 goals and 1 assist with 2 PIMs. He played 46 games in the AHL this season with 19 goals and 38 points. Laureano has played in 33 NHL games and has 1 goal and 4 points with 4 PIMs.

The Panthers will start G Lowell Tillman, the 37 year old has 25 wins with a 2.74 GAA and a .907 save % in 51 games. Last year he had 41 wins with a 2.35 GAA and a .916 save % in 67 games with the Panthers. Montreal goes with back-up Stefan Mertel, the 30 year old has 7 wins with a 2.57 GAA and a .897 save % in 15 games.

Anaheim Ducks (41-29-5) at Montreal Canadiens (43-26-4)

Montreal is back at the Bell Center to take on the Ducks. Montreal faced them once in Anaheim and lost 3-1. Montreal is 2nd in the Eastern Conference with 90 points. Columbus leads with 91 points and a game in hand on Montreal. The Ducks are 4th in the Pacific with 87 points, but just 1 point back of the 3rd seed playoff spot.

Montreal G Stefan Mertel is a 30 year old from Humme, SVK. The Canadiens back up goalie is said to have a excellent glove and excellent mental toughness. In 4 years with the Canadiens organization, he has been a back up in the NHL for 3 of them. This year he has 8 wins with a 2.39 GAA and a .901 save % in 16 games. For his career he has 13 wins with a 2.62 GAA and a .904 save % in 39 games.

The Ducks start G Juhani Liimatainen, the 21 year old has 27 wins with a 2.72 GAA and a .912 save % in 52 games. Last year he had 25 wins with a 3.03 GAA and a .904 save % in 64 games with the Ducks. Montreal starts G Wilf Nestor, he has 35 wins with a 2.14 GAA and a .921 save % in 59 games.

There was no scoring in the 1st period as the Ducks had the shots advantage of 12-9.

It took just 10 seconds into the 2nd period but Montreal's LW Kevin Forfar gets his 38th goal of the season to make it 1-0. Anaheim ties the score 1-1 at 5:54 when C Chris Alexander gets his 30th of the year on the PP. Montreal's C Bryce Spencer took a misconduct penalty late in the period and will miss the 1st 8 minutes of the 3rd. The shots were 16-6 for Montreal.

Anaheim grabs an 2-1 lead at 1:07 when LW Don Faith gets his 4th of the year. The shots were 7-7 in the 3rd as the Ducks hold on to win. Anaheim was 1 for 6 on the PP while the Canadiens never got an opportunity. The final shots were 32-25 for Montreal.

Duck's LW Don Faith had a goal and was the 1st star. The 20 year old now has 4 goals and 17 points with 34 PIMs in 76 games. Faith is in his rookie season with the Ducks.

Washington Capitals (33-33-7) at Montreal Canadiens (43-27-4)

The Canadiens are at home to play the Capitals. The teams have met twice which each team winning on the road. Montreal is in 1st in the Atlantic with 90 points, 2 points ahead of the Bruins and with a game in hand. Washington is in 6th in the Metropolitan with 73 points, 8 points behind the Rangers that hold the 3rd seed.

Montreal has been fortunate to have one of the best goalies in the NHL in 29 year old Wilf Nestor. Nestor is signed until the end of the 1986-87 season so they will enjoy great goaltending for a while. Nestor has many strengths but he has a excellent glove and blocker. In the past 4 years he has spent a total of 7 days on the IR which means he has been durable. This season in 60 games he has 35 wins with a 2.14 GAA and a .921 save % with 5 SO's. For his career he has 140 wins with a 2.34 GAA and a .917 save % and 19 SO's

The Caps will start G Bryant Dillingham. The 34 year old has 26 wins with a 2.75 GAA and a .910 save % in 61 games. Last year he had 40 wins with a 2.14 GAA and a .913 save % in 62 games with the Capitals. Its very rare that G Stefan Mertel gets back to back starts but he will tonight as the Canadiens play again tommorrow. The 30 year old now has 8 wins with a 2.39 GAA and a .901 save % in 16 games.

The first period is scoreless as the shots were 12-9 for Montreal.

Montreal finally breaks the goose-egg with a C Bryce Spencer goal at 4:40 of the 2nd. For Spencer it was his 18th of the season. Washington gets that one back quickly as LW Stephen MacMillan gets his 16th of the year at 5:26 to make it 1-1. Montreal gets one quickly after that, LW Josef Kramar gets his 13th of the season at 6:26 to make it 2-1 Montreal. Washington ties the score 2-2 at 9:01 when C Jeremy Everett gets his 30th of the year. The shots were 18-13 for Montreal in the 2nd.

Montreal takes a 3-2 lead at 3:50 of the 3rd as RW Brayden Laureano gets his 1st of the season, 2nd of his career. Montreal extends the lead to 4-2 at 6:58 when LW Josef Kramar gets his 2nd of the night, 14th of the year. LW Josef Kramar completes the hat trick at 9:51 as he scores his 15th of the season to make it 5-2. Montreal's Adrian Andersson got into a fight 5 minutes into the period with the score 3-2. The shots were 10-0 in the 3rd for Montreal. Both teams were 0 for 3 on the PP. The final shots were 40-22 for Montreal.

Montreal Canadiens (44-27-4) at Columbus Blue Jackets (43-26-5)

The top two teams in the East will go toe to toe tonight as the Habs and Blue Jackets clash at the Nationwide Arena. Montreal has not faired well against Columbus losing 1 in regulation 3-1 and another in overtime 2-1. Montreal is first in the conference with 92 points, 1 ahead of the Blue Jackets that have a game in hand.

Montreal acquired veteran C Ed Parks in the off-season after a surprise retirement of Zach Berry. The Canadiens needed to add a veteran to offset all the youth they had in the lineup, the 30 year old from Elgin, IL fit the bill. Discribed as a two way forward with strong defensive play, Park is also a very good leader and team player. Parks is currently the C on the 3rd line with a counterattacking role and sometimes shadow. In 4 season in the NHL he had 3 years with the Islanders prior to signing as a free agent with the Canadiens. This season he has 6 goals and 23 points with 10 PIMs in 75 games. For his career he has 55 goals and 140 points with 138 PIMs in 321 NHL games.

Columbus will start G Andrew MacGreusich, he has 11 wins with a 2.61 GAA and a .910 save % in 20 games this season. Last year he had 3 wins with a 3.84 GAA and a .902 save % in 28 AHL games with the Tigers. Montreal go with G Wilf Nestor, the 29 year old has 35 wins with a 2.14 GAA and a .921 save % in 60 games.

It didn't take long but the Blue Jackets scored on the PP at 2:57 when LW Benjamin Morel gets his 40th of the year to make it 1-0. Columbus goes up 2-0 at 8:17 when RW Yakov Nesterov gets his 9th on the PP. It didn't long, but Montreal came right back with a goal at 8:24 when RW Adrian Andersson gets his 10th of the season and its 2-1. The period ends with the shots 12-10 for Columbus.

There was no scoring in the 2nd, just a fight with D Joey Lachance with 7 minutes left in the period. The shots were 7-5 for Montreal in the 2nd.

Montreal ties the score 2-2 at 0:42 when C Bryce Spencer gets his 19th of the season. The Canadiens out shoot the Blue Jackets 16-7 in the 3rd but ended the period short-handed and killing a 5 on 3. Both minors were taken in the last 30 second of the 3rd giving the Blue Jackets a great opportunity in the overtime.

Columbus took a advantage of the 5 on 3 as former Canadiens prospect (Lachance trade) LD Zbynek Hubacek gets his 3rd of the season just 17 seconds into the overtime and the Blue Jackets win. Columbus had 2 shots in o/t so the final shots were 33-26 for Montreal. Montreal was 0 for 7 on the PP while the Blue Jackets were 3 for 6.

Columbus C Dean Jackson was the 1st star with 2 assists. The 35 year old now has 21 goals and 56 points with 20 PIMs in 66 games. In 4 seasons, he had a career high 25 goals in the 1981-82 season with the Sharks.

Tampa Bay Lightning (37-34-5) at Montreal Canadiens (44-27-5)

The Canadiens are at the Bell Center to take on the Lightning. Montreal is 0-2-0 against Tampa and would like to take a bite out of their playoff chances. Montreal are currently tied for 1st in the East but Columbus has a game in hand. Montreal leads the Atlantic by 3 points with a game in hand on Boston. The Lightning are in the 3rd seed with 79 points in the Atlantic, a point ahead of the Red Wings.

C Bryce Spencer has been heating up as of late. He has scored in 5 of the last 7 games for Montreal. The 22 year old from Ottawa is discribed as a two way player that can score goals. He is very good in front of the net and is also very good at the face off dot. Currently he is playing 2nd line C with the role of garbage collector and punishing forward. Originally drafted 57th overall by Toronto in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft, he was traded to Anaheim in July of 1982 and Montreal acquired him in a trade with Anaheim in February 1983. In 3 season's in the NHL he has 75 goals and 152 points with 268 PIMs in 242 games. This season he has 19 goals and 35 points with 135 PIMs in 76 games.

Montreal Canadiens (45-27-5) at Buffalo Sabres (28-41-7)

Montreal go to the KeyBank Center to face the Sabres, a team in which Montreal is 4-0 against this year including a 3-2 win the last time they were in Buffalo. Montreal is ties for 1st in the East with Columbus but the Blue Jackets still have a game in hand. Montreal now has a 5 point lead on the Bruins in the Atlantic, both teams have 5 games left. The Sabres are in 14th spot in the East, they are officially eliminated from the playoffs.

Montreal RD Jakub Svec is a 21 year old from Svitany, CZE. The scouts call him a two way defenseman that has a strong skating game. He is also excellent at his point shot and shot blocking. Currently playing on the 3rd pairing in the role of a mobile defenseman and stay at home defenseman. Svec was Montreal's 114th overall pick in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut on December 26th, 1982. This season he has 7 goals and 27 points with 24 PIMs in 77 games. For his career he has 9 goals and 32 points with 28 PIMs in 101 NHL games.

Ottawa Senators (24-43-11) at Montreal Canadiens (45-28-5)

The Sens are in Montreal to face the Habs, the last time these teams met at the Bell Center Montreal pounded the Sens 9-1. This season Montreal is 2-1-0 against Ottawa. Montreal is tied for 1st in the East with 95 points, but the Blue Jackets have a game in hand. Montreal still has a 5 point lead on Boston in the Atlantic and Montreal holds a game in hand. The Sens are in last place in the East with just 59 points.

Montreal RW Adrian Andersson is a 20 year old from Vasteras, SWE. The scouts call him a two way player and the strongest part of his game is his physical play. No question he has excellent strength but he also has a very good accurate shot. Andersson is currently playing RW on the 2nd line in the role of a set up man, but also as a counterattacking forward. He was Montreals 1st round, 7th overall pick in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft and made his NHL debut on November 3rd, 1983. Before coming to Montreal, he won a 1982 goal scoring award (52 goals) with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar of the QMJHL. In his first season with Montreal, he has 10 goals and 23 points with 64 PIMs in 57 games.

The Canadiens will got to Madison Square Garden for game 80 on the schedule. The last time the teams met at MSG the Rangers came away winners in a 3-2 score. The teams have split the 2 meetings so far this season. Montreal is tied with Columbus for 1st in the East, but Montreal has 97 points and a game in hand on the Blue Jackets. The regular season ends tonight with all 30 teams playing their final games of the season. Montreal will go to the BB&T Center where they won the last time 3-0. Montreal is 2-1-0 against the Panthers this season. Montreal has clinched both the Eastern Conference and Atlantic Conference with a 4 point lead on the Blue Jackets and 11 point lead on the Bruins. Florida has been eliminated from the playoffs.

It appears that the Canadiens improved both offensively and defensively in the last 20 games. The PP is still a concern but we are better 5 on 5 then we were.

Montreal made a trade at the deadline to get LW Kevin Forfar and it seemed to make a difference as we did improve our scoring. Forfar had 8 goals and 16 points in 22 games after the trade, that would equate to a 30 goal and 60 point season over 82 games, but he certainly wasn't as effective in Montreal's system as he was with the Senators. The 39 goals and 73 points were career highs, but he was on pace for a 41 goal/77 point season with Ottawa.

The Islanders won game one after taking a quick 3-0 lead and Montreal could not recover. Montreal will need to recover with a win in game two.

Montreal finally made a statement game dominating the Islanders and taking a 2-1 lead in the series. Montreal would like to go home leading 3-1.

The Islanders are going to mix it up a bit as they start G Teemu Wikman, the 21 year old has absolutely zero playoff experience in the NHL. Montreal with a chance to eliminate the Islanders and move to the Conference Semi- Finals. Montreal dominated the Islanders in both games in New York.

Montreal goes up 9-2 at 11:13 when LW Kevin Forfar gets his 2nd of the night, 5th of the playoffs on the PP. Montreal wins the series 4 games to 1 and move onto the 2nd round for the 1st time in their 4 year history. Boston Bruins (43-33-6) at Montreal Canadiens (49-28-5)

Montreal will face the Boston Bruins in the semi-finals, maybe not the best match up for Montreal as we did not do well against them in the regular season. In four meetings, the Bruins won three of them.

The Bruins will start G Tyrone Inskip, the 34 year old has 3 wins with a 2.64 GAA and a .923 save % in 5 playoff games this year. Montreal looking for 2 home wins before the series heads to Boston. Boston suffered two key losses as two of their top 4 defensmen had injuries that will end their playoffs.
