Emile Griffith vs. Lou Brouillard

Emile Griffith boxer sharply, scoring well against tough Lou Brouillard. In the 2nd, a left hook landed south of the border and referee Harry Kessler issued a warning. The action really heated up in the 4th until another low blow brought a second warning.
In the 8th, with the Griffith ahead on 2 of the 3 judges card, another low blow brought an end to the evening as Harry Kessler stopped the bout and disqualified Griffith.

Boos and Beer showered the ring for about 20 minutes... and not just a few people are glad that Harry Kessler's officiating duties come to an end with the first round of the tournament.

Kelly Pavlik vs. Carl Bobo Olson

Olson roughs up Pavlik pretty good over the first two frames. Kelly Pavlik seems a little tentative and unsure. In the 3rd, Pavlik finds his rhythm and Olson his dropped to one knee. His rises immediately... but the dye is cast. Olson turns into Pavlik's heavy bag from that point forward until he's "pounded out" against the ropes at 2:25 into the 5th.

(Pavlik TKO5)

Welcome to Title Bout Island for “The Rematch” of Sugar Ray Robinson and George Chip. Most experts were stunned by Chip’s performance during their first meeting. Others have pointed out, had the bout been scored on the 10-point must system, Robinson would have won a decision – citing his knockdown of Chip in the 11th round.

So here we are, awaiting the start of the Robinson Chip rematch. The referee for the first round tournament bouts in charge of the action – Harry Kessler.

Kessler’s had his own share of controversy in this tournament, disqualifying Emile Griffith in his bout against Lou Brouillard. Many felt the disqualification was at very best – premature.

Ray Robinson vs. George Chip (the rematch)

Round 1
The fighters touch gloves and return to their corners. You can feel the anticipation like current making the hairs on your neck stand up! There’s the bell and we’re underway.

Robinson going right at Chip. Ray triple-jabs his way forward and blasts a hard hook of Chip’s ribcage. Oh, those shots hurt! Robinson going with both hands to the body and Chip misses coming over the top. A hard right to the head from Robinson and a double-left hook to the body. George Chip’s retreating to the ropes. Chip lands a right to the head. Robinson with two rights to the body and a hook to the head. Chip’s taking a lot of punishment out there! And there’s the bell. Ray Robinson with a big opening round!

Round 2
George Chip scores with a right to Robinson’s head in ring center. They trade punches in ring center! Good, clean shots scored by both men. You sometimes get the feeling when watching Robinson that if he really puts it in overdrive, there’s not another fighter who ever fought at 160 or 147 who could beat him.

Chip lands an uppercut. Robinson feinting… looking for openings. He’s taking his time this round. Sugar Ray scores with a combination to the head and body. Chips responds with a flurry of punches to the head! There’s the bell ending the second. The crowd’s on its feet cheering as we end round two!

Round 3
Chip bulls Robinson into the ropes and scores with a right to the body. Welcome back from commercial break. This is Jersey-Jim coming to you live from ringside. Chip’s head is a weapon out here tonight! He’s being reprimanded by Harry Kessler for battering ramming Robinson with it! We’re now resuming the action. Chip’s staying right on top of Robinson, digging shots to the body. Robinson spins Chip in the corner and fires a furious combination of punches at the bell!

George Chip has to keep Robinson moving backward if he’s to duplicate his performance during their first meeting.

Round 4
Here comes Chip on the attack. We’re in the 4th. Robinson with snaps Chip’s head back violently with a beautiful sequence of punches! Those punches exploded off Chip’s head like a shotgun blast! Ray times Chip’s charge, sidestepping his attack and making him pay!

Robinson rocks George Chip with a several hard shots to the body before bring ending the combination upstairs to the head! Chip looks confused out there right now! Chip scores with a left to the body and a straight right to the head. Robinson doubles up on the right to Chip’s head – and there’s the bell.

Round 5
Sugar Ray Robinson’s in command as we enter the 5th. George Chip a bit tentative here… and you can see why. Ray’s working the jab well from the outside. Chip trying to work his own jab now… trying to gauge and close the distance without walking into some of those debilitating shots from Robinson. The paced has slowed down here in the 5th. Robinson’s relaxing and taking his time setting up the right hand behind the jab. Chip’s following Robinson around but not doing much else at the moment. There’s the bell. We’re 1/3 of the way through and George Chip has got to do something to turn this around soon!

Round 6
Ray Robinson snapping George Chips head back again with a hard jab. Nice right-hand lands for Robinson. Oh! Blood’s seeping from a bad cut over George Chip’s left eye! It looks like that last right hand from Ray Robinson split the eyebrow in half – all the way across! More bad news for George Chip!

Robinson connects with a hard uppercut. Kessler’s letting this go on. Chip’s starting to leak like a broken pipe out there.

Chips scores to the body and takes a three-punch counter in return.

There’s the bell.

Round 7
They managed to stop the bleeding in between rounds. And we’ve begun the 7th with George Chip going right at Ray Robinson! Chips bangs away with both hands to the body as he tries bulling Robinson into the ropes. Ray with a hard combination to the head. Chip snap’s Robinson’s head back with a hard right cross! Robinson explodes a huge right hand off Chip’s head! Chip’s legs buckle! Chip and Robinson exchange thunderous body blows on the inside! The crowd’s on its feet!

Robinson and Chip unloading bombs along the ropes!!

Chip drives his head into Robinson’s! Oh! The bell rang and Kessler’s shouting at Chip! Chip used his head like a batter ram – just as the bell ended the round. Both fighters are headed towards their corners and Robinson’s right eye is starting to swell badly from that head butt!

They should take that round away from Chip for that flagrant foul.

We’ll be back in a minute!

Round 8
Robinson’s eye is noticeable swollen as we start the 8th. Chip received a warning, but that was it. Round 8 is underway and Chip’s back on the attack again. Robinson rips Chip’s head back with a screaming right cross!! Dear God, that punch could decapitate someone!

Chip staggers Robinson with a big uppercut! Ray walked right into that punch and took it flush!

Chips misses with a combination! Robinson blasts Chip to the body! Robinson scores with both hands to the head! Robinson drives Chip into the far corner and with a storm of heavy leather! Chip’s trapped against the turnbuckle! Robinson turns Chip’s head with a hook at the bell!

Round 9
George Chip is looking sort of winded out there. No surprise here. He probably took two fight’s worth of punishment already. Robinson with a smooth jab. Robinson hooking off the jab. Chip absorbing these shots but still moving forward. Robinson with clubbing Chip to the body like he’s pounding a piece of dough.

A volley of hard punches snap Chip’s head back again!

Blood’s spurting out of that cut over the eye again! That cut looks bad. The canvas is starting to look like a crime scene out there. All that’s missing is the yellow tape.

There’s the bell. They should stop this, but I’m glad they’re letting it go on. After all, it’ll probably be some time before we see the name George Chip in action again.

Round 10
Robinson’s on the attack – here in the 10th. Ray with a right hand! Chip’s hurt! A left hook from Robinson.

Down goes Chip! That shot dropped Chip to his knees like a puppet’s strings being cut. Here comes the count –

1
2
3

Chip’s staggers to his feet! He doesn’t look too good. Kessler’s gonna let this one go on! Robinson pounces!! Ray’s tearing into Chip like a tiger into wounded prey! Chip’s taking a beating!! His back’s to the ropes! He’s not answering back! His hands are coming down! He’s out on his feet!

BIG

UPPERCUT!

Chip pitches forward – face-first to the floor!

Kessler’s not stopping this? He’s giving Chip a count!

1
2
3
4
5

Chips looks up at Kessler

6
7

George Chip is on his feet! I can hardly believe it.

There’s the bell!

His corner is helping him back to his stool. I’ve gotta say, George Chip is definitely the oldest of the old-school. The ringside doctor and Kessler and in Chip’s corner checking him out.

If this wasn’t so entertaining, we might be worried about his health!

Round 11
Somebody be a sport and buy George Chip a beer when this one’s over.
Here we are in the 11th. What a great way to make a living, watching and reporting on fights. I can hardly wait to see Tony Galento back in action next week!

Robinson nails Chip with a brutal right cross as the 11th gets underway. Oh – this has gotta be it. Robinson’s punch just opened a squirting blood fountain over the other eye! Robinson doubles Chip over along the ropes with two thunderous hooks to the body!

A right uppercut!!

Down goes Chip on his back! Stick in the fork, baby. Chips done!

Kessler directs Robinson to the far corner and picks up the count at –

3

4

5

6

7

8

Chips lurches to his feet and stumbles forward into Harry Kessler! Kessler straightens Chip up and waives them together! What?

Robinson races forward and he’s unloading the works on George Chip! Ray with a double uppercut!! Only punches are holding Chip and …

Down goes George Chip – again!

1

2

3

4

5

6

Chip’s on his feet. He’s out of it! His corner is should throw in the towel.

Kessler’s letting it continue!

Ray scores with a big left to the body! A booming right to the head!!

That’s it!!

Kessler finally jumps in and stops the fight!

POST-FIGHT

This is Jersey-Jim at ringside with referee Harry Kessler.
Harry, some of the people here at ringside are saying your license should be revoked for allowing the fight to go on. Comments?

Harry Kessler: My job is to make sure the fighters fight according to the rules. Each time Chip got knocked down, he got back up and kept fighting.

JJ: Isn’t your job to protect the fighters?

HK: The fighter’s job is to protect themselves at all times. I’m there to enforce the rules. If his corner wanted to stop it, they could stop it whenever they wanted to. They didn’t. In the end, when he could no longer defend himself, I stopped it.

JJ: Well, there you have it. Thanks for joining us Harry, and thank you who’ve tuned in from home.

Tomorrow, we have the rematch between Sumbu Kalambay and Bennie Briscoe.

Until then, thanks for tuning in. This is Jersey-Jim.

Goodnight!

Another non champion to smack Burley in the face with? Though Briscoe did hold the SNU & PUB titles. Doesn't get much more prestigious than that.

Bad Bennie earned his place the hard way, winning world titles in TWO alternate universes!

There's another interested observer in all this back in Australia too, wondering if his invitation got lost in the mail...Les Darcy. Les was a keen observer of the Robinson/Chip fights, having knocked out George Chip in 9 rounds in his last fight.
