Virgil Hill is fighting the fight of his life against Archie Moore! The fight is very close going into the 12th round. No knockdowns or cuts. Quicksilver's looking to pull off a miracle upset!

Archie Moore vs. Virgil Hill
Virgil Hill fights on even terms against Archie Moore for the first 11 rounds of the 15 round contest. Both fighters had their moments – boxing, slugging, countering and countering counters! In the 12th, Moore dug deep into the reservoirs of his fistic genius and gave Hill a good, old-fashioned, beat-down. Hill was fortunate to make it to the bell. Hill came back swinging, however, in the 13th and rocked Moore badly. The final two rounds were a toss up. The decision to follow…. |

Billy Conn vs. Jack Delaney (W15 unan)
Billy Conn outfought Jack Delaney to secure a unanimous decision victory and advance to the semi-final round of the tournament. Any doubts as to what the judges may have been seeing was erased by a sizzling 15th round knockdown. In the waning moments of the fight, Conn ripped into a fatigued Delaney with a six punch combination – the final punch which dropped Delaney to both knees. Delaney arose at three, but hung on for dear life as the bell rung ending the fight. |

Michael Spinks vs. John Henry Lewis (Lewis TKO11)
Spinks was on the verge of having Lewis out on his feet several times within the first 6 rounds of their epic slugfest. But in the end, Lewis came roaring back and sent Spinks to the canvas twice in the 11th round. Spinks took an eight-count for the second knockdown on one knee. Eight seconds, however, weren’t nearly long enough to recover enough strength to keep Lewis at bay. Referee Mills Lane rescued Spinks from a third knockdown with three seconds remaining in the round. Lewis was ahead by one point on all three judge’s scorecards at the time of the stoppage. Virgil Hill is now the last of the modern-day Light Heavyweights left in the tournament. |

Great tournament Jim, I have been without a computer for almost a month, so I haven't been able to follow as much lately. I am not surprised that Delaney was able to beat Jones, but there have been a few surprises.
ie: Hill vs Moore (Ouch) Reggie Johnson vs Bob Foster (UGH)

Without a computer for a month? I'd be going through withdrawal. I'd also be out of business, but that's another story.
Hill beating Moore would be like McCain beating Obama. It's an upset! Last edited by Jersey-Jim; 11-04-2008 at 10:45 PM. |

Great tournament so far. Kind of hoping that Virgil Hill keeps going and wins it all now.
Any chance we'll see the winner take on Ezzard Charles or Gene Tunney? |

I agree, this is a great thread, but it would be nice to see the winner fight Ezzard Charles, Gene Tunney or perhaps even Harry Greb.

As always Jim very entertaining, I'm gonna pull for Conn but the last time I rooted for someone they exited quickly (Czyz). You can do it Billy!!!

It depends who wins the tournament at this point. I'll have to wait and see. Right now, I'm rooting for Virgil Hill. If he does win, it will sort of like Jim Braddock winning the title. Likewise, if he wins, he would need some kind of extraordinary performance to beat someone like Ezzard Charles. |

Welcome To the Semi-Finals of the All-Time Light Heavyweight Tournament
Can Virgil Hill upset Billy Conn? To keep things in some kind of perspective, Virgil Hill eventually rose in weight and won a Cruiserweight Title (twice). Billy Conn rose in weight and lost to Joe Louis. Conn fought a better quality of opposition, but may have produced similar results to Conn had he fought in that era. Now, they'll face each other in the Tournament's Semi-Final round. Stay tuned!
