**STAR LEDGER EXTRA**

TONY GALENTO LOSES WINNING EFFORT VIA DISQUALIFICATION IN THE 6TH.

Referee Rudy Battle barely escaped the clutches of an angry Jersey mob tonight after disqualifying Tony Galento for low blows in his fight against Franco Cavicchi. The first two rounds were close. Galento rocked Cavicchi with big, clubbing hooks in the 3rd and in the 4th, Galento dropped Cavicchi to the floor hard with a tremendous left hook that probably would have decapitated a smaller man. To his credit, Cavicchi beat the count at 7 but was clearly hurt. Galento was warned for a low blow in the 2nd and deducted a point for holding and hitting in the 3rd. By round 6, Franco Cavicchi looked severely damaged with several cuts and a swollen left eye. With moments remaining in the round, Galento landed a left hook south of the border and was immediately disqualified by Battle.

Most experts agree that the stoppage was a bit of a surprise ending to what was turning into a one-sided fight in favor of Galento.

Several unruly fans were allegedly arrested for kicking Cavicchi in the groin on his way back to his dressing room. Cavicchi’s manager Antonio Gravelli said, “These people are animals. We’ll never set foot in this state again!”

New Jersey boxing commissioner Charlie Spina states, “Tony didn’t get beat by Franco Cavicchi tonight. He got beat by Rudy Battle.

Several weeping Italian cornerwomen helped their beloved Cavicchi back to his dressing room. Cavicchi himself said that he never fully recovered from the low blow from Galento in the 2nd round and that he would never fight in Galento’s back yard again.

Several ringside reporters including this one agree that the outcome of this fight did little to derail the comeback to Two-Ton Tony. If anything, it has tightened the support base of his fans here in Jersey and around the country as well.

BRELAND BOMBS SANTILLA

In early action -

Welterweight Mark Breland knocked out Rev Santillan at 2:39 of the 7th to move to 4-0 (3). The fight was fairly competitive until Breland began connecting with clean power punches in the 4th. From that point on, he seemed to take Santillan slowly apart. Santilla collapsed beneath a hail storm of heavy leather in the 7th. His attempt to beat the count was futile. They could have counted to 100. Santilla was out-punched 285 to 42 over the course of the fight.

Great write-up Jim. Tony will most likely bounce back from this one in short order, and should at some point get Cavicchi back in the ring.

Thanks guys. Yeah, Tony won't have any problems bouncing back. Cavicchi will need about 3 months of down time to recover from the cuts and pounding he took.

Both fighters are in good position to cash in somewhere down the line.

Larry Holmes will be making his first start since his shocking decision loss to Cavicchi eight months ago in New Orleans. As a matter of fact, he'll be fighting in just a few moments against South Africa's Johnny DuPlooy.

The fight is taking place in Pittsburgh, PA.

PITTSBURGH BOXING TODAY
************************

LARRY HOLMES BEATS JOHNNY DUPLOOY VIA 6 ROUND TECH. DECISION.

Larry Holmes upped his record to 11-1 (9) with a one-sided technical decision win over Johnny DuPlooy 27-3-1 (22). The two fighters collided heads in the first and DePlooys right eye lid was severely cut. DuPlooy was dropped for a 3 count in the 3rd but managed to rise and continue. His best round was the 5th in which he effectively back Holmes against the ropes and scored effectively to the head and body.

LH: I took my frustrations out tonight on DuPlooy. I'm still mad about getting robbed in New Orleans against Cavikki or however you pronounce his name. And last night, his luck continues against Galento? No way this guy don't have somebody pulling strings for him. I've got to get that man back in the ring again one day.

JD: (Johnny was unavailable for comment).

From The Desk of Jersey-Jim

This is Jersey Jim reporting live from my apartment above Tony Galento's bar. We'll be checking out a few new prospects in Tony's Gym basement in a few hours. We're all night owls around this joint. Charlie Fusari of Irvington, NJ will be taking over some of the training and strategy type things for Two-Ton and the handful of young fighters who've been hanging around.

I'm looking forward to continuing my write-up's and was even thinking about trying my hand at managing a guy or two. It's always good showing up at local fights throughout the state with a few fighters in tow. You never know when a guy is going to get hurt at the last minute and a sub will be needed to step in. Maybe a Heavyweight, a Lightweight and a Middleweight - those types of guys are good to bring along just in case. You can pick up about $400 bucks to sub.

But here's the big news, Ruslan Chagaev and Sultan Ibragimov will be fighting for the undisputed Heavyweight Championship of the World. Not that the match is that exciting, but we're going to have a New Champ to fill in the vacancy left by Jim Jeffries' retirement.

Wlad Klitschko will probably face the winner in the near future. Wlad's not too far from the end of the line himself. Franco Cavicchi and Two-Ton are both knocking at the door, too.

Okay, I almost forgot, Jim Jeffries will be refereeing the fight between Chagaev and Ibragimov.

I know this sounds crazy, but it's almost like I've seen this before? Maybe in some parallel universe or something like that?

Antonio Tarver - Joe Choynski Tonight!

By Jersey-Jim

Antonio Tarver puts the Light Heavyweight Championship of the World on the line tonight in Tampa Florida against last minute substitute Joe Choynski. The fight will be seen on the Light Heavyweight Channel. Choynski has worked closely with former Heavyweight Champion – James Jeffries for the last several months and got the call 4 days ago when Paul Berlenbach sprained his ankle during the taping of an interview at the Flyweight Channel Studios in Phoenix Arizona.

Berlenbach was in the Phoenix area training for his upcoming fight with Antonio Tarver when he was invited by the Flyweight Channel’s Yokishuri Zamakuzeksimon to appear in a special guest appearance before an interview with Flyweight Vic Darchinyan. During the interview, Darchinyan hurled insult after insult at the Light Heavyweight contender from the studio audience. It was after Darchinyan insulted Berlenbach, saying “Berlenbach couldn’t carry my jock strap” that all hell broke loose. Moments later, Paul Berlenbach tripped over a camera cable as he chased Darchinyan through the studio and sprained his left ankle. In a phone interview this morning, Berlenbach says he regrets losing his temper but was quick to add, “Squirrels carry bigger nuts than Darchinyan!”

Joe Choynski, a fringe contender in the Light Heavyweight division says he has a surprise for Tarver.

Joe Choynski: “Yeah, me and Jim Jeffries have been working real hard to get my career on track over here. My record is 26-7 with 14 knockouts, but I’ve spent too much time fightin Heavyweights. I got good power and during a sparing session I hit Jeff real good. He says not even Klitschko hit em’ like that. So yeah, I feel real good fightin’ tonight.”

Antonio Tarver, never at a loss for words, had this to say about tonight’s fight.

Tarver: “Man, he’s coming to my house, here in Tampa. I feel sorry for the man. He hasn’t been disrespectful to me, so I won’t punish the poor guy. I’ll make it quick! I’m sure he’s just happy to be here.”

Tarver is an 8-1 favorite.

Yes, it's a great addition. Count of 9 created great fight posters over in his universe THE SQUARED CIRCLE, and I thought, that is such a great idea. I created the images in CorelDraw. It's very simple, just shapes and text. There are a few different newspaper designs that I'll be using. Since my universe is a mixture of 1930's America and 2008, I wanted to have something that looked both old and modern at the same time.

That's what I came up with!

Tarver KO’s Choynski in Wild Shoot-Out!

By Jersey-Jim

Antonio Tarver retained the undisputed Light Heavyweight Championship of the World tonight with an 8th round KO of Joe Choynski.

Tarver was 2 seconds away from losing the Title as he arose from a first round knockdown in Tampa against unheralded fringe contender, Joe Choynski.

“It was like the canvas sprung up and smacked me in the forehead,” said a solemn Tarver shaking his head slowly. “I’ve been hit, but I ain’t been hit like that before. It was like there was elevator music or some kinda #!% playing in my head for a moment.”

Tarver overcame a first round knockdown and a bad cut over the left eye in the third to finally drop Choynski for 7 in the 6th, and for the full count in the 8th.

Choynski surprised a lot of people tonight as he took this fight on just 4 days notice. Each fighter took turns brutalizing the other in a sizzling shoot-out that lasted 8 breathtaking rounds. Both fighters received a 20 minute standing ovation afterward.

Chagaev vs. Ibragimov for World Heavyweight Championship

CHAGAEV DECISIONS IBRAGIMOV FOR TITLE
By Jersey-Jim

Ruslan Chagaev outworked Sultan Ibragimov over 15 rounds to earn a split decision victory and the undisputed Heavyweight Championship of the World. The title was left vacant by the retirement of former champion – James Jeffries who also officiated tonight’s contest.

Chagaev appeared to be the busier of the two fighters throughout tonight’s contest. Neither fighter was badly hurt, but both fighters had to contend with swelling around the eyes throughout the fight. Chagaev’s left eye began showing signs of swelling as early as the 4th round. Ibragimov’s right eye began sporting damage at the conclusion of the 6th.

Tonight’s Heavyweight Title fight was billed as: WHITE RUSSIANS ON TAP. The fight itself, though, was met with less enthusiasm than previous championship fights.

The always annoying Welterweight Champion Zab Judah expressed his opinion from ringside –

“Man, watching these big, slow white dudes is like watchin’ two men fighting under water, you know what I’m saying? I mean, you know… I want my money back. These guys ain’t @#!!.”

Wlad Klitschko, who was also at ringside for tonight’s bout had this to say –

“I uh, I think… that I will beat, uh… either fighter. Yes, I am confident, you know, that I can fight hard….. and win…… and be champion. I believe I will… be Champion.”

Several names have already been thrown around as being possible opponents for tonight’s victor. Franco Cavicchi, Wlad Klitscho are the top two names on just about everyone’s list.

That’s it for tonight’s action.

Goodnight.

Raging Bull with Robert DeNiro

Favorite Morning Beverage:
1 Coffee
2 Beer

Favorite Morning Food
Dry Toast, A Few Cigarettes

Politically Correctness has yet to be invented.

The Year is 2008.

The President is Herbert Hoover. (You didn't think this was a real universe... did you?)

There are three popular sports. The first, of course, is boxing.

I forget what the other two are? I should have started this column before I started drinking (make note to self for next time).

If you get a shot at any title, you have to make the most of it... because you'll be lucky if you ever get another.

The World has 1 Champion per division.

Fights can take place anywhere - in ballrooms, gymnasiums, floating barges, cleared out parking lots, etc.

Fights can also take place at Madison Square Garden or the GRAND-MACK-DADDY of all stadiums - TITLE BOUT ISLAND (a man-made island off the coast of Seaside Height, NJ which hosted the All-Time Heavyweight Tournament won by Jack Dempsey) See "Notes From an All-Time Heavyweight Tournament" for details.

Most popular Male name: Joe
Most popular Female name: ? (They're referred to as broads/dames, etc.) That's a name, right?

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Joe The Interviewer: "Jim, do people in this universe generally feel positive about the world and their place in it?"

Jersey-Jim: "Well, Joe..... yeah... I'd say yeah. And if not, I mean, it's nothing a few shots of whiskey can't smooth over."

JTI: "I see. Well, why does the atmosphere always appear to be rainy... murky... basically depressed? Are there other types of atmosphere's we have yet to see?"

J-J: "Of course, Joe. Before you know it, the temperature will drop and the rain and murk are done. It'll be cold as hell out there."

JTI: "I noticed there aren't any Strawweights in this universe? Why is this?"

J-J: "Well, there was a Strawweight Division, but if you check out the favorite foods section a few paragraphs up, you'll see why it didn't last too long."

JTI: "Well I had other questions to ask, but seeing the way everyone's hitting the bottle out there.... I think we'll just put a bookmark in right here and say goodbye for now.

J-J: "I'm sorry..... we're you saying something?"

More boxing to come!

Just had to get that out of my system.

Tonight, power-punching Joan Guzman takes on Jr. Featherweight King Oscar Larios. The fight will be telecast live by the Featherweight Channel. The question is, can anyone stop this man? Guzman has brutally kayoed his last eight opponents and seems to be growing more devastating with each outing.

Guzman: "My power continues to grow to the point where, I’m actually becoming concerned for my opponent’s safety. But tonight, I will lay my concerns to the side while I pound Oscar Larios into the canvas.”

Although Larios has already successfully defended his title twice, many people are already referring to Larios’ title reign in the “past tense.”

He had this to say through an interpreter. “People are telling me that I had a good run? I still have the title! I’m not being treated like a champion, I’m being treated like a challenger. Tonight, I will show everyone that I am a true champion and they will know that they’ve underestimated me. Tonight, I will win.”

Oscar Larios vs. Joan Guzman
For Larios’ World Jr. Featherweight Title.

Jersey-Jim here reporting from Tony Galento’s bar. In case you don’t subscribe to the Featherweight Channel who’s carrying tonight’s fight, I’ll be doing the round-by-round reports for you.

Oscar Larios and Joan Guzman are in the ring. From here, we’ll be changing the channel and watching Jerome Taylor’s Middleweight title defense against Sam Soliman.

Both fighters are in the ring being introduced and I’ll be back with the first round action.
